We live a block away but visited rarely partly because we ate very little meat for years. Eased up on that a bit. We ordered the two lamb stew choices and shared. It was a lot of food ... we overate ... but excellent. The seasoning is extraordinary. I should mention the rice topped with saffron. The Persian tea was a delight, enough for two. We were naughty and shared the walnut pistachio (I think it was) rose water ice cream. It was light and generous portion. It (the meal) was a bit expensive but we already strategized what we would order next time as we could share the stew and get soup with it. This was a birthday splurge for the 76 yo birthday boy. The service and delivery were prompt, polite and unobtrusive. They have been here 25 years. I don't begrudge the price ... nobody gets rich these days ... appreciate the authentic food. It was just like an invitation to someone's house for dinner. I think the server was the owner, not sure. He has family back it Tehran. We hope the conflict resolves soon. We have heard only good things about Iran. It should and would be a wonderful place to visit. Let's make the US a great place for others to visit. read more

We really wanted to enjoy this restaurant. I was so happy when I walked in. The place seemed so authentic especially since it was family owned by a husband/wife team. There was no waitstaff or bus staff. The owner was the chef/waiter. We figured - what could be better! The decor looked very homey and inviting. Even though at the time we first stepped into the restaurant we were their sole customers, we felt ignored. We sat ourselves down and were not greeted or offered water until after several minutes. There was no bread offered. Maybe since their sign says "gluten free"? I guess no gluten free bread either? Persian cuisine is known for their delicious home baked bread and customarily given to patrons as appetizers and/or on the side when you order kebabs/stew. There was none. So we ordered the olive appetizer. It was actually frozen and my teeth sank into clumps of ice. I also asked to confirm whether or not their wild salmon was actually wild as written on their menu and the owner said "of course". Sadly it didn't appear or taste wild; the cubed cut meat was thick, fleshy and peachy pink. Definitely not sockeye/wild. Had we known it was farm raised, we would've ordered a different dish. The doogh yogurt drink was very watery and lacked any flavor or substance. Usually when I order this drink in other restaurants I would gulp it down like nothing and ask for seconds. I took a sip of their doogh and drank it sparingly out of obligation, not pleasure. I've dined at Negeen Persian Grill whenever I'm in Summit for many years and the food is excellent! The chicken kabob was juicy, perfectly grilled and very tasty. The salmon kabob was also perfectly grilled and very tasty. And, they have a variety rice dishes to accompany meal that are very flavorful. The smoky eggplant and shirazi salad were delicious appetizers to start the meal. The ambiance is pleasant and the husband and wife team who run the restaurant are very friendly. It's been a few years since I visited Negeen in Summit, because there are plenty of Persian restaurants with similar menu offerings and service closer to home in Morristown rather than any specific criticism of the dining experience at Negeen. When I stopped in for dinner on a recent Saturday night, my dining companions and I were very surprised that we were the only customers in the restaurant throughout our entire meal. The three of us shared the Kashke Bademjan ($9), a tasty appetizer comprised of sauteed eggplant, mint, onions and garlic blended into a paste, and topped with a few dollops of (dairy!) kashke whey. As an entree, I opted for the Fesenjan ($25), comprised of shredded chicken in a savory sweet and sour stew that features strong flavors of pomegranate and served alongside a generous portion of basmati rice, that was very tasty. My regular dining companion ordered the Salmon Kabob ($25), a skewer of well-charred grilled salmon served alongside basmati rice (although she'd specifically asked for the salad in lieu of the rice), that she enjoyed despite the minor snafu with her order. With no other customers while we were there, the ambiance was very quiet and the service was friendly and accommodating without being overbearing. We'll give it another shot next time we're in the area and craving Persian, but it's unlikely we'd make a special trip to Summit for Negeen. read more

This place is Amazing!!!! Me and my BFF went there a Saturday for lunch. This place did not disappoint. We share the Panir-Sabzi and Mirza Chasemi for appetizer. The Mirza is a smooth roasted eggplant dip thing. Amazing!!!! The Panir-Sabzi is a soft cheese with several fresh herbs like fenugreek, mint, and nuts. Yum! For meal, we ordered the Combination Kabob (serves 2) meal (filet mignon, chicken, lamb chops, and ground lamb). Everything was cooked perfectly and it came with 2 sides (salad and rice). I was so excited to eat Iranian food here but it was far from what I had hoped for. The kashkebadjaan appetizer was ok at best. Not at all what I've always had elsewhere. We ordered koobideh and barg kabab. Neither was seasoned or piping hot like it should be. I literally relied on salt to add some flavor to the meat. Alongside the rice came a quarter of a grilled tomatoe and onion. I've never seen such tiny portion before of vegetables before in a $25 platter. Usually you get the entire onion and a tomato. While noting was terrible, it was not great either and for the price, it's just a shame. read more

this is a nice little restaurant in Summit. Ambience is very cozy and warm. We went on a wednesday night around 7:30pm. only a few people there. Our server was as young as likely legally possible and knew next to nothing about the menu. He was nice, however, but pretty much useless as a servers. We ordered the 3 plates of appetizers (hummus, eggplant, mixed pickles served with Labash). Hummus was pretty good, the other 2 were average. My wife is a vegan and they didn't have much on the menu for her. They gave her some grilled vegetables with rice. She pretty much hated her dish and unfortunately they charged her for 2 separate items (vegetables were labeled as a salad at 10.95 and rice was at 9.95). My dish was Chicken kebab with Rice. It was decent, tho nothing spectacular. Chicken was well prepared and tender. The basmati rice was fragrant, but no seasoning whatsoever (not even a hint of salt). However at 15.95, not a bad price. However now you will understand why I was upset at the pricing of my wife's dish. Spent about $65 including tip. It was BYO which was nice. We won't be back. read more

The restaurant is very nicely decorated, and conveniently located, so it's got that going for it. Which is nice. My entree was the boneless chicken kebab with rice. It was very tender and juicy, nicely spiced, but a little on the small side for a portion. There was a single piece each of grilled tomato, onion, and green pepper, which I found disappointing. My dining companion chose the lamb chops with side salad in place of rice. It was flavorful, but chewy. And I mean take a bite and five minutes later you're still masticating away furiously. With smaller bites, that improved, but the meat was very dry. Neither of us were provided with or offered any type of pita bread, as is the norm at this type of restaurant. So there we are breadless and chewing, and left alone. No "how is everything?" or offer for a refill on beverages - important because my water was nearing empty. Here's an approximation of what the server performed while I sat with a nearly empty water glass: - Cleared a table - Set the table, one plate at a time, with a trip to the kitchen area between each - Visited other tables - Cleared an outside table - Also set that table, one plate at a time, with the same trips to the kitchen My wager at this point was that the server would return once we were finished and offer us the dessert menu. But she arrived just before we finished, and my lonely water glass was no longer neglected. The price was higher than the food or service warrants, and we won't be returning. I was majorly disappointed with our experience ordering take out/eating from Negeen. I was excited to find this place and even more excited to see Shirin Polo on their menu (a usually brightly colored rice dish made with candied oranges). This was my first experience there and I won't be back. First, I went to pick up my food (it was given to us 5 minutes earlier than promised), and was handed a bill at least $10 higher than I expected. Apparently, the prices on Beyond Menu are wrong (cheaper than they actually are), and she said something about needing to update the website, but they hadn't yet... I can tell you that I wasn't planning on spending $80 on take out for two adults and two kids. So I was already annoyed when I left. Then, we get home and the pita, which was sent with us in a ziploc bag, was the same product I could buy in a supermarket. Super dry and mass produced. For $6-7 for a hummus appetizer, I expected real pita. The hummus also tasted mass produced and it seemed like they added red pepper flakes and oil. The meat was flavorful and the shirin polo has the right flavor, even if the color was closer to brown than orange. Those reasons are why this review has two stars instead of one. I read alot of negative reviews about this place. I had a much better experience than most. Yes, I get that the owner can be off-putting. He is quiet and seems grumpy , but he was nice enough and I think it is more of a cultural barrier than anything else. He definitely warmed up as the meal went on. One big negative is that we were the only ones there and there was no music playing. That made it rather awkward. The food - I found the dishes from ok to really good. We started with hummus which was very good, one of the better hummus dishes in the area in my opinion. We also had the marinated olives Zeytoon Parvardeh, these were very different from anything I've ever had and I really liked them. The last app was the Mirza Ghasemi. This one was just ok. It's an eggplant dish. This was definitely microwaved and it contains eggs so It kind of turned into a souffle type texture. It wasn't bad just not great. I will say that we finished though so there's that. The last thing we had was grilled chicken kabob over a salad. The chicken was very tender and seasoned and cooked perfectly. Found this place through a price promo on Restaurant.com. We we're very happy with our meals. Once again we found a place that was out of the ordinary, with foods we never had before. Casual style dining here. We shared two appetizers - - one that was smokey eggplant called Mirza Ghasemi (like a babaganoush) - the other was Panir-Zabzi -- a pile of fresh herbs, nuts and feta cheese to be eaten together in warm whole grain flatbread pita (herbs were fresh sprigs of mint, basil and tarragon). The latter was for the more adventurous, but it was the more unique of the two apps. Entrees were both great. One was Fesenjan -- a stewed chicken, ground pomegranate, raisin and walnut dish served with buttery delicious basmati-style rice. Yum. This was great. The other entree was Shirin Polo-- cubed chicken seasoned with garlic served with an excellent version of the same basmati style rice now seasoned with candied orange peel, saffron, slivers of carrot and almond. The rice was particularly excellent. The total bill with tip, before the promotion, was $61. Portions were perfect. Flavors and textures were very special. I'd recommend this place to my more adventurous friends who are bored with the usual stuff. Didn't bring a wine for the BYO, but would have brought a dessert wine like a Muscat or even a Tawny Port to go with the raisin, nut and pomegranate flavors. read more

At seven o'clock on a Friday night, we were only the third table. The young waiter and the owner immediately greeted us. We tried Kashke Bademjan for app. Something we never had before and something we really enjoyed. It reminded me of eggplant caponata. You can taste the caramelized onion, savoury sweet. The Kabob Barg and Boneless Chicken Kabob were both tender and tasty and the rice was buttery good! I love butter and I tasted it well in their baklava, too. Persian vanilla ice cream has a hint of rose water that cleans your palate and I like biting their sugar cubes before dropping them into my Persian tea. The service is ok. The owners seemed a bit overwhelmed when a party of 11 walked in but, we didn't feel neglected. When we go back, I will try their lamb. read more

The food was excellent! The Eggplant appetizer wonderfully seasoned. The Kabobs were the best we've had any where, tender and seasoned to perfection. Ask for tahdig the famous crispy Persian rice dish that is a staple in Persian homes. It went very well with the chicken stew which which had a delicious sweet and sour note thanks to pomegranate molasses. The Persian ice cream with rose water was nice and refreshing finish to the meal the rose water didn't overwhelm it. They could use additional help, a waiter to assist the owners would be helpful. We could not help but notice dirty dishes on a large table that were never cleared. When a party of 6 came in they sat them at a small table rather than clear the dirty table. It made no sense. My wife and I were looking for something different for dinner, and followed our trusty Yelp to Negeen. Arriving early (4:45) on a Sunday we found parking directly across the street. The dining room is small, 10-12 tables, with a semi-open kitchen in the back. Decor is a bit austere, but pleasant. Our waitress was pleasant and personable; reasonably attentive, if not ebullient. We began with a combination appetizer plate of charbroiled eggplant puree (mirza ghasemi), cold spinach and yogurt mix (borani) and hummus. All were served with a huge disk of homemade (and nicely charred) nan bread. The hummus had just a kiss of cumin, and was finished with a dusting of sumekh powder and olive oil-- quite possibly the best hummus I've ever eaten. The eggplant was also very good; smooth and nicely flavored. Although also good, the spinach had two very hard acts to follow. Arrival of our entrees was perfectly timed, and servings were very generous. Albaloo Polo, a rice dish with chunks of grilled chicken, sour red cherries and a light sauce was delicious. The chicken was both charred and finished expertly, joining an abundance of delicious reconstituted dried cherries in a cloud of extra-long grain basmati rice. The dish was beautifully done, and genuinely memorable. Our second shared entree was salmon kabob, and being a salmon lover I wish that I could report a similar success with this dish. There was a large portion of big salmon chunks, each with a hint of an herbal marinade and a proper amount of char. The problems, however, were with the salmon. Both taste and texture instantly divulged that this was frozen fish, offensive in a $20 entree. Compounding the problem, the fish was overcooked. A tasty herbed rice (as in more green than white) accompanied the salmon. We would have appreciated an alternative to the second large platter of rice, but there was variety between them. The salmon issue is something which I sincerely hope to be only a matter of having sold out on fresh fish yesterday, as it is out-of-character for a restaurant of this caliber. I could not wait to write this review. I am persian and for starters, me and me lady dine out at least 5 times a week. Negeen was the one to remember. I oredered over the phone and my food was ready when I got to the restaurant. I ordered the Sultani and Joojeh, along with one extra side of rice and Mast Moosir for appertizer. To my surprise my bill was $60 and I was charged 5 for side of rice, 1.95 for bread that I DID NOT order, 4 for Dill rice( which is ALWAYS free of charge, at any other persian restaurant that i ve dined) and 2 for "other". Being the person that I am, i just paid the bill and thought to myself maybe the food is going to be good and u know, whatever. WRONG! food was absoultely horrible, one of the worst persian food i ve ever had. Persian or not, stay away from this place, over priced and seriously not good at all. read more

I really, really wanted to like this place, guys. I really did. Middle Eastern and Greek food are my absolute favorite and what a treat it was to find a place so close to my house. The atmosphere was nice, the waiter was courteous, but the food felt like I could make it at home. We had of course hummus, but the hummus honestly tasted like the one from the supermarket. Unsure of what to choose we chose the $40 platter, and it turned out to be just a pile of colorless meat and very white, dry rice heaps. There was no imagination, no variety at all, just some grilled meat and white rice. For $40. Ultimately I was so embarrassed to spend $75 (!!!!) for TWO PEOPLE? Negeen is a cute little place that we found courtesy of a LivingSocial deal where I paid $20 to get $40 off the bill. Just to manage expectations, we adore a Persian place back in Queens, NY and as such - that sets the bar for every other Persian restaurant we try. And it is a high bar to achieve. Negeen does a decent job and saves us the $25 in tolls back to NY while filling our bellies. Love the BYOB, so we brought two bottles of vino. For appetizers, we split a shirazi salad (Chopped onion, tomato, cucumber, parsley vinaigrette and olive oil) which was bright and refreshing, an off the menu request of tadig (the crunchy rice at the bottom of the pot) and Mirsa Ghasemi (Charcoal-grilled eggplant, mixed with chopped tomato, garlic and touch of egg) - kind of like babaganoosh. All were excellent. For dinner, the wife had the chicken kabob which came with some barely grilled onion, green pepper and tomato over a bed of somewhat strangely flavored basmati rice. Rice almost tasted buttered which was kind of "different". I had the Kabob Kobideh which was two ground meat kabobs over the same rice and grilled veggies. Both entrees were decent but nothing to go bonkers over. Decently sized platters that left us quite full. No room for dessert that night. Atmosphere was pleasant, servers were adequate (obvious that the staff was all family). Restaurant was empty when we arrived at 6:30 on a Friday night but was mostly full when we left at about 8:15pm. For those who said service was slow I agree. But you have to remember that these folks are from a different culture where dining is an experience to relax over. We crazy busy New Jerseyians who live life in the fast lane are not used to laid back service. The words "thank you" are not really part of the middle eastern vernacular, as I have come to realize. When I said thanks to the two servers on the way out, not a peep out of either one in return. Would we come back? Sure, especially with a certificate where we got $40 off a $71 bill. This has to be the worst Middle Eastern restaurant that I've ever had the displeasure of eating at. Appeared to be some kind of strange husband and wife team who took an eternity to serve us at our table. The fat husband approached the table with spots on his shirt shirt on top hanging out, was very unfriendly and answering questions about the menu in didn't seem to care whether or not we were in the restaurant. The food was severely under seasoned and the worst part is that I used to one of those online services that provides discounts at restaurants. It wasn't a discount at all they really just jacked up the bill and then applied the so-called discount to our meals. If you're ever in the mood for Middle Eastern food and live in the area of this restaurant I urge you to choose elsewhere read more

What a kind, family-run restaurant in an otherwise Formica table downtown! Traveling over the Thanksgiving weekend we were looking for a change from diner fare (usually great in New Jersey, but another piece of pie? No.) Negeen Grill was our find. An Iranian family, Mike and Azar, decided to serve homemade Iranian cuisine in this Manhattan commuter suburb of New Jersey. Negeen's dining room is both quirky and inviting. Mismatched tables, pillows on benches, and steam radiators hissing and wheezing in time to Mike and Azar's cooking in the open kitchen. A student (or their nephew?) is their wait staff. Negeen's menu has a good mix of traditional Iranian dishes, in addition to the expected hummus and kabobs. We could recommend the charcoal grilled eggplant (Mirsa Ghasemi), mashed with tomatoes, spices, and grated egg. Their home-pickled vegetables (Torshi) served with pita were a bright contrast that further raised our appetite. We split dishes of fesenjan stew, chicken slowly cooked in pomegranate molasses and roast walnuts, and a saffron vegetarian stew with peas and eggplant. Both were served on fragrant rice. This is BYOB restaurant. However, Mike and Azar serve their own doogh, a minted cool milk drink made with their homemade yogurt. Azar makes a strong Turkish coffee which kept us driving until we reached home. read more

I thought the food was good, not excellent, but I qualify this by explaining this was my second time eating Persian food out. There was a lunch menu, which was available until 2:30, which was very reasonably priced with a wide array of choices. In addition, we ordered a pot of the Blueberry Kiwi tea. It was presented very authentically and was quite tasty. I would recommend this place to try for a lunch, then make up you own mind for dinner.
