    Salmon Kabob

We really wanted to enjoy this restaurant. I was so happy when I walked in. The place seemed so authentic especially since it was family owned by a husband/wife team. There was no waitstaff or bus staff. The owner was the chef/waiter. We figured - what could be better! The decor looked very homey and inviting. Even though at the time we first stepped into the restaurant we were their sole customers, we felt ignored. We sat ourselves down and were not greeted or offered water until after several minutes. There was no bread offered. Maybe since their sign says "gluten free"? I guess no gluten free bread either? Persian cuisine is known for their delicious home baked bread and customarily given to patrons as appetizers and/or on the side when you order kebabs/stew. There was none. So we ordered the olive appetizer. It was actually frozen and my teeth sank into clumps of ice. I also asked to confirm whether or not their wild salmon was actually wild as written on their menu and the owner said "of course". Sadly it didn't appear or taste wild; the cubed cut meat was thick, fleshy and peachy pink. Definitely not sockeye/wild. Had we known it was farm raised, we would've ordered a different dish. The doogh yogurt drink was very watery and lacked any flavor or substance. Usually when I order this drink in other restaurants I would gulp it down like nothing and ask for seconds. I took a sip of their doogh and drank it sparingly out of obligation, not pleasure. As hopeful as we were to make this a regular stop, unfortunately that was our first and will be our last visit.

a plate of meat and rice

I was so excited to eat Iranian food here but it was far from what I had hoped for. The kashkebadjaan appetizer was ok at best. Not at all what I've always had elsewhere. We ordered koobideh and barg kabab. Neither was seasoned or piping hot like it should be. I literally relied on salt to add some flavor to the meat. Alongside the rice came a quarter of a grilled tomatoe and onion. I've never seen such tiny portion before of vegetables before in a $25 platter. Usually you get the entire onion and a tomato. While noting was terrible, it was not great either and for the price, it's just a shame.

It's a small, family run place with excellent food. We started off by ordering appetizers of Hummus and kashk-e-bademjan (puréed eggplant) served with pita. Both were very good! This is a BYOB, so the wine was perfect with this. For entrees, my wife and I both ordered Kabob-e-barg, which was marinated pieces of filet mignon, served with Basmati rice. My wife also ordered a small salad. The rice was amazing! I really enjoyed that and the salad which we split. We had to order the homemade baklava for dessert...great way to top off the meal! Morristown has so many great restaurant options. Every time we come here we always say that we should come here more often. With parking garages, it's always easy to come here, park, and walk around the town. If you're coming here, Marjan is a good choice for a delicious meal.

The service is very attentive. Right when we sat down the host gave us water which was nice. The waiter was a little too attentive, kept coming up to us to ask if we were ready to order when we were not, and just kept coming and coming every two minutes. They give complimentary flat bread which is tasty. Our Persian friend mentioned usually Persian restaurants give the bread with herbs and feta rather than just plain. We did find on the menu the herbs and feta was an extra cost. We had the kebab combo and subbed cherry rice and salad (which is cucumbers and tomatoes) and also exchanged the ground chicken kebab for a chicken breast kebab. The standout was the steak kebab and the cherry rice. There were so many cherries in the rice, and it was both sweet and savory. I couldn't stop eating it. The steak was super juicy and well seasoned. I also really like the roasted tomato on the side, basil and pickled cabbage. We ordered a stew, think it was Ghormeh sabzi. It had a bunch of herbs in it, and beans and a dried lime. Was told not to eat the lime. It was a very strong and rich stew, I took a couple of bites. Don't think I could have eaten the whole thing. It's very strong. It's our friend's favorite Persian dish and she loved it. There was one dish we wanted that they ran out of but they gave us a couple of dollars off the bill which was nice. Overall excellent food! Would come back.

The country's cuisine reflects its multicultural history, with influences from Persian, Central Asian, Indian, and even Mediterranean culinary traditions. Though the food was served quickly, it wasn't made quickly. Rice, particularly long-grain varieties like basmati, is blanched for a day before it's cooked. Meats are marinated in carefully prepared concoctions for hours to ensure tenderness. Lamb shanks are stewed for hours each day. Never had Afghan food? You're not alone. There are only a handful of Afghan restaurants in NJ. Located at the Westfield Plaza off of South Avenue E, some of my colleagues decided on takeout as first-timers for lunch, which came recommended as the food tastes and feels like home from this family-owned and -run establishment. We called the order in for their family platter consisting of Ground Chicken, Lamb and Beef Kababs, Garden Salad, Brown Rice, Fresh Naan Bread, and a side of Potatoes with a red sauce and yogurt. Upon arrival at Famous Kabab Cuisine, my colleague and I were greeted by the owner, Ahmed, who has more than 25 years of experience in making fresh bread and kabob, and informed us of a 5-minute wait. The food remained hot back into the office, would feed 5, and have some for leftovers. The kebabs (ground chicken, beef, and lamb) were well seasoned, tasted delicious, and paired beautifully with the brown rice. Top that bread or kebab with the trio of sauces. A white yogurt sauce with dill is very reminiscent of tzatziki sauce, a vinegary green sauce with cilantro and pureed walnuts, and, for those who do want the heat, a red habanero sauce that should have come with a warning. Overall, one can tell the food was made fresh with quality ingredients. It is not cheap, but one gets decent portions, which we can recommend.

The stuffed feta dates were the good balance of sweet and savory, and the eggplant dip was incredibly smooth and rich without feeling heavy. A little extra seasoning could go a long way with the dip! For mains, the salmon was beautifully cooked and well-seasoned, and the lamb shank was a standout--tender, deeply flavorful, and comforting in the best way. The falafel had a great crisp on the outside while staying soft inside. You can really tell they put care into each dish. What made the night extra special was the birthday surprise: the sweetest baklava presentation that felt so warm and personal. It was such a thoughtful touch. We also ended the night with cappuccinos, hot chocolate, and an affogato (not pictured), which were the perfect cozy finish.
