I stumbled upon this bookstore while strolling through the square. The printing press in the window immediately drew my attention, and I could not stop myself from popping inside. This store boasts a good selection of books, pens, stationery, and puzzles, and there is something for everyone. I particularly enjoyed the cozy seating areas around the store. The store was peaceful and didn't have any offbeat music playing, which was nice. Plus, there was a used book section upstairs that was quite interesting. The books were priced fairly, similar to other indie bookstores. Overall, I'm definitely planning to come back when I'm in the area. read more

A bookstore in an old building - what's not to love about this experience! There was an author there selling his play he wrote from A Christmas Carol, and his play was being performed at the towns square theater that day. How delightful! It screamed vintage Christmas to me as I stood in this beautiful bookstore. I had to find the children's area, and it was charming! A fake fireplace was designed just for the holidays, and so many diverse books were displayed for children and adults. There were so many great choices! And once you stop and really look at the store, you see the beauty it has to offer. Gorgeous old stairs cases take you up to the second floor that circled around the building and it was designed for readers. How thoughtful! Yes, the whole experience was appreciated. I felt the warmth of a bookstore bringing cheer to life. Oh, and I bet you're wondering if I bought the play A Christmas Carol - and the answer is YES! We drove to McKinney from Fort Worth for the sole purpose of visiting Neighbor Books after seeing an Instagram post. The store is bright and airy and the customer service was great. The books were well organized with plenty of space to sit. I ended up finding a book and they have the best selection of Table Topic cards I've ever seen outside of Amazon. Prices were reasonable for a book store. My only reason for giving it a 4 is I felt it was a fairly small selection of books considering how large the space was. Eve thought it didn't live up to the Instagram hype, we enjoyed our visit and the trip to McKinney. read more

I am at the frame of mind that every old building reaches a point where it should become a bookstore. When a building becomes well over 100 years old and in this case, specifically over 130 years old, it has seen some history within its walls. That history becomes as interesting as the books that it contains within. The building develops its own soul if you will, comprised of all of th souls who once dwellers within it. Neighbor Books was laid out kind of interesting for me. The way it is designed it gave me a feeling of a rather limited selection of titles, but maybe it was just an illusion. This place is a community hub with great energy for sure. It was neat to see neighbors seeing each other and catching up. My only complaint about the place is that while I was there, there were several kids rambunctiously running up and down the stairs. That's not necessarily Neighbor's "fault" but it is a bit alarming and does affect the ambiance of the place. read more

If there was one thing missing from Downtown McKinney, it was a cute local bookstore, and Neighbor Books fits the bill. The building itself is adorable, with history shining through every plank of hardwood flooring and exposed brick/shiplap. The space is immense, and it almost feels like you're in one of those old European libraries you'd find on Pinterest. They have an upper balcony wrapping the wall that includes quiet spots to sit and even an area with board games and puzzles for patron use. I think there was also an elevator for those with difficulty on stairs. They have a decent amount of gift items and books, but tend to lean more toward well-known bestsellers than quirky indie titles, especially in the young reader section, which was pretty sparse. For the size of the shop I definitely expected more of a selection to choose from, but maybe they'll grow once they get more established. They seem to be splitting the difference between liberal/conservative selection and not leaning specifically one way or the other. They do have a good amount of kids Christian books. read more

When I first walked in, I was underwhelmed by what I saw to be the book collection and overwhelmed by how big yet quiet and comfy the space was. Once I started looking at the books, however, I realized that I definitely judged the book by the cover. I love the small but unique selection the store has, and I thought it was awesome they offer pickup if you want to order a book for no extra charge (I believe!)! We spoke with Joey and he was also great. Paperbacks are a decent price and while the hardback was more, Joey sold the second book I bought as a reader and not as a salesman. I really appreciated the way he approached conversation, both casual and professional, and his recommendation was based on what I told him about my preferences- it could also be viral on tiktok and I wouldn't know, but his recommendation was specifically inspired by what I had told him I read and it seemed like he immediately understood. While the space is a tiny bit under used, and it's a bit more expensive, supporting local businesses with such a quality approach to customers is absolutely worth it! My kids love the selection of kids books with room for them to read comfortably and I love that there's complimentary coffee and a space for me to read and work quietly as well. I recently visited this new store in McKinney. I was interested in a light reading, fun fiction book ~ not my usual crime drama fare. I looked over the fiction selections that were prominently displayed and was disappointed that they all appeared to have a certain bent, exemplified by the book jacket summaries and endorsements of notable progressive news outlets or personalities. When I asked if there were books available that didn't have that embedded slant, I was told that they only carry the more "popular" titles and it was suggested to me to peruse "the classics" section, which included authors such as Jane Austen and George Orwell. When I looked at books in the non-fiction section, the same was true. I was disappointed that the books available were not more "inclusive" and "diverse" - appealing to a broader clientele that may not be interested in the one-sided narrative du jour. I did see that the children's book section includes a good selection of titles. read more

Great local independent bookstore. This shop is housed in the space that was formerly the comic book store in downtown McKinney. They have an interesting selection of fiction and non-fiction titles, a children's book area, and plenty of comfy chairs for reading. Neighbor Books offers a paid membership program that gets you a discount on purchases and a free drip coffee when you come in the store. The owners and staff are really nice. My only complaint is that it sometimes feels like their inventory is kind of limited. This may be a combination of being fairly new and also being in a pretty large space. I don't know if their selection is really smaller than that of shops like Patchouli Joe's (Denton) or Interabang (Dallas), but it sort of feels like it is despite being a two story location with a lot of floor space. Selection quantity not withstanding, I do think they have quality books and have created a lovely place to visit. read more
