I cannot recommend Nelda's Tailors enough! I have used them for several bridesmaid dresses and my husband has used them for his work pants. They are always flexible, accommodating and produce good results! I just went to pick up another bridesmaid dress today and mentioned needing to steam it myself because I'm limited on time, and she called a cleaners for me that is going to be able to steam it tonight/tomorrow and have it ready by tomorrow morning! Ok, this site doesn't have the correct store hours. They aren't open on Saturday. I took a dress here to shorten because of the reviews here. They did a fantastic job with it. The only problem was the price. Everyone on here says it is reasonable. I didn't find it too reasonable. I'm not sure how much they charge at other places in Austin. However, I did have two other dresses altered in two other places in Houston (yea, I know, whole different place). One dress I had shortened AND had straps added and they charged one-third the price that Nelda's charged. I had another dress shortened at one-half the price. And they did just as good a job. I will come back here for more important pieces, but will probably take everyday wear clothing elsewhere. Oh, and they did call and let me know my dress was ready a day early. Thanks! read more

I brought a little black dress here to be taken in to wear to my boyfriends company holiday party. The zipper stuck when I tried it on for the lady, I brought it to her attention and said it might have to be fixed as well. She had to force the zipper for me in order to put it on for sizing. When I picked it up a week later they were fairly busy. I tried the dress on, the zipper was still stuck and could not be budged to see if the dress fit properly. I showed the lady who came to check me out the zipper. She took it in the back and added some extra seams to pull the fabric away from the zipper, and put bees wax on the zipper to help it slide better. The total for taking in the dress was a staggering $92. I was already frustrated about the zipper and there were other customers in the store , so I did not call attention to my dismay over the cost. The boyfriend recommended Nelda's to me. When I told him about the cost, he informed me that he had three suits and two shirts altered here and paid less than I did to have one dress taken in. The night before my party I tried the dress on and could not get the zipper up and the boyfriend could not get the zipper up. Needless to say I was unable to wear this dress for the intended party. read more

I dropped the dress off on Monday and the work was done that following Wednesday. They destroyed TWO of my dresses. After the first incident, I thought well, mistakes happen. The second time however, when the hem of my Donna Ricco dress was extremely short (they measured me in a hurry at a time, dealing at the same time with a bride's dress...), I informed them of the mistake and they still wanted me to pay $35. When I refused, they threatened me and my husband (by calling him at home) that they are going to report us to the police. (a quick note: when my tailor in Dallas saw their work on the first dress, she was appalled - they were supposed to take the sides in; instead, they added a pleat on the outside, which made my little waist line look so bulky). Bad customer service, bad tailor skills. read more

Wedding Dress Hero! I had my wedding dress alterations done by someone working out of their home based on a friends recomendation. Needless to say it was a horrible job, that took WAY to long to finish and did not look good. I called Nelda's on the Monday before my Sunday wedding. She booked my appointment same day and assured me they could fix my dress and have it ready by Friday. I went back on Wednesday for the follow up fitting. They had fixed my dress, made it look 100% better and it was ready for me to take home! The week before your wedding is probably the most stressful time of the entire wedding process but Nelda's Tailors managed to exceed my expectations. Advice: Brides go to Nelda's FIRST! They are awesome, greatly skilled and fair in their pricing. read more

Went to this establishment at the recommendation of a co-worker who received great service (her bridesmaids dress was too small and she said they re-did the dress, with some magical snappy work, and the day was saved for what sounded like a reasonable price for what happened). I took my bridesmaids dress in a 1.5 weeks before the wedding (Nov 1st). Wedding is Nov 12th. They said it would be ready on Tuesday Nov 8th. On Tuesday morning I called and they said it would be ready Tuesday after 4:00 p.m. I then got the phone call on my phone after talking to them saying my order would be ready at 2 p.m. Driving from South Austin to North in that time period is...not ideal. I went to pick it up today (Nov 9th). Tried on my dress and the straps were tightened like they were supposed to be, but they were still a bit loose. They said they could install lingerie straps to help hold the straps up, and put bee's wax on the zipper to make it easier to handle (much like grease on gears). They did the alterations in 10 minutes (great!) but when I went to check out I was quoted (originally) $48.00 for the alterations. My total came out to $60.00. The additional 12.00 was for lingerie straps and bees wax? Really? Bit overpriced in my opinion for what I had done, granted they did the minor changes right then and there. Overall, an OK experience but as my friend said "you should have shopped around first." Granted, I should have, but I was desperate. Note: They do not press the bridesmaids dresses. Keep that in mind when you are budgeting time. read more

My wedding dress is gorgeous. Not pouffy or multi-layered, but has a great deal of bead work. Nelda's did a wonderful job with the alterations (hemming, taking in at the bust/waist), and adding a bustle. Over 3 visits and fittings, the dress was done, it took about a month, which was the timeline they stated from the get-go. My only complaint is that they are a bit pricey. My dress was less than $500 (great deal!) and the alterations were $275. The work was wonderful, but the price was not. read more

INCREDIBLY RUDE to me. I had an appointment to get my wedding dress fitted by Neldas at least 4 months in advance. Of course no one can anticipate a death in the family but that is still no excuse for being rude to a potential customer. I got a phone call last Saturday where the lady informed me that there was a "death in the family" and that I needed to reschedule my appointment to this Saturday. I agreed, and then today was contacted by them again stating that they needed to switch things around and could I come in on Mon, tues or weds. I said that wouldn't work for me because I work during the week and they said fine, we will see you tomorrow (Saturday) at 10. Then I get a phone call about 20 minutes later saying that tomorrow won't work and that I need to find a new tailor. I asked, so you won't do it for me at all? Then she went on to say, "ma'am my mom died and you are being rude and inconsiderate. I hope your mom is still alive and you get to spend time with her." At which point I told her I did nothing wrong, I didn't know whose family member had died just that someone within the business of which I have never been nor do I know how many people work there and what relationship everyone has to each other. As I talked she told me to listen to her and "just shush." At which point I told her I wouldn't just shush that I would be writing a yelp review:) the only recourse for being treated this way. You don't project your stuff on other people like that especially on someone that you've never met and a potential customer. I am very sorry for her loss, and can't imagine what that would be like because I am blessed to still have my mom but in no way did I do anything to deserve to be treated this way. read more

I bought my wedding dress at Belle Saison. They recommended Nelda's. I had a great experience. The staff were very friendly. They listened to what I wanted and made sure my dress was comfortable to wear the whole night. The dress looked great for my wedding. They hemmed it to the perfect length so I didn't trip and my husband didn't step on my dress during the first dance (which I have seen). You couldn't even tell that it had been shortened even though there was an intricate pattern all over the bottom of the dress. It was well worth the cost. read more

I dropped off a leather jacket for them to shorten the sleeves on April 24, 2014. They did tell me they were backlogged and asked if I needed it quickly. I said no and they said it could be as much as a couple of months! Really? They came to me highly regarded so I agreed. Today is September 15, 2014 and I have no idea what is going on, nor do they. I called a couple of months ago and they still had it and assured me it would be done soon. Today they are telling me they will have to speak to the employee who took my order and get back to me. That doesn't sound good. I called back and told them if they could not give me definitive information tomorrow I would be by to pick up the jacket on Wednesday. They do not seem alarmed by this at all. If you decide to use them, good luck! read more

Nelda's used to be great but has seriously gone downhill in recent years as they've gotten busier. Plus, it's gotten much more expensive as the quality of the work has deteriorated. I often pick up items that they've forgotten to work on and the attitude of the employees is appallingly bad when a mistake is pointed out. I used to love them but my friends and I have all had issues lately, and are willing to pay more to have our tailoring needs met right the first time. I often go back two of three times due to their oversights. Save yourself the hassle and go elsewhere. read more

I was very pleased with my experience with Nelda's. I brought my wedding dress, which was really just a full-length dress but delicate to work with because of the fabric. I'd already gone to two seamstresses -- one didn't want to work on it because of the fabric, and one didn't want to quote me a price. I was already thinking I'd have to find a new dress when I went to Nelda's. They didn't bat an eye, just pinned me up and delivered the dress about a week later. This place used to be great. I'm so disappointed that it isn't anymore. They did a ton of work for my wedding several years ago, but now it seems that they just don't care about doing a good job. In 2008 I would have given them 5 stars, but over the past few years I've given them chance after chance and the quality just isn't there. My most recent encounter with Nelda's started last October. I needed to have a pair of jeans hemmed and the sleeves on a corduroy jacket altered. I was told they would be ready in a week. Went in two weeks later after not hearing from them. They hadn't started working on either. Person at the front seemed annoyed that I would come in before they had called. Came back the next day. Jeans were done, but noticeably uneven. This had actually happened the last two times I brought pants in as well, so I wasn't surprised. The previous two times they also didn't have items ready when described--I'd been hoping it was a fluke. It doesn't appear to be. Anyhow, I tried on the jeans, they agreed they were uneven, and said they would redo within a few days. Went to look at the jacket. Didn't even get around to trying it on. They had done such a poor job that it looked like something from a junior high home economics class. The edges were uneven, on one side they had stuffed extra fabric in a strange pocket and not sealed it. Just a very poor job. I asked for it to be redone, and the woman who appears to be the owner or manager came out of the back and said she completely agreed that it should have been done better. They said it would be ready next week, I explained that I would be out of town for most of the month but could be back in at the end of November. Come back at the end of November. Once again, the cuffs look terrible. Manager comes back out, agrees that it's not right, says they will fix it. I come back in a few days later, and it's not done yet. The most irritating thing at this point is that it's clear they know there are serious quality problems, but they are not checking people's work before returning items to clients. Basically the attitude is, "If they don't complain, then we are ok with giving them back poorly done alterations, even though we know they are bad". I explain I will be out of town for most of the rest of the year, so at this point I may not be able to pickup until January. Come back in January, and they have no idea where it is, but they will give me a call. No call. Go back in a week later. No jacket, no phone call. It's a shame to see such a great business go downhill over several years like this. I kept hoping that the next time I went in they would have gone back to being the great tailors they used to be when I started going, but that doesn't seem likely at this point. read more

Worst tailor in Austin. I took my wedding dress in to only have minor tweaks done such as filling the straps etc. I asked how much it would be and they said they could call. I left my dress there and 6 hours later, they called stating they charge about $800 to do minor changes to my dress...some of which was totally unnecessary, but the guy was adamant on making the changes. I told the lady how ridiculous that was and that I was on my way to pick up dress. I immediately went over to pick it up and noticed that my wedding dress was just carelessly thrown in the garment bag. I didn't say anything and walked out right away. After putting my dress in my car, I noticed 3 2-inch holes around the bag. I became irate but wanted to avoid dealing with these unprofessional people. After returning home, I had to double check my dress in case they did any damage to it. Luckily the dress wasn't damaged, however the bottom had a bunch of hair and different kinds of thread sticking to it. I don't ever write reviews, in fact this is my first one ever. I just felt the need to make people aware of this trashy business. Avoid them! And give your money else where. read more

Based on word of mouth I went here to get my wedding dress altered...the ladies were very nice...however, when they gave me an estimate, it was the price of my dress! (850+) when other bridal shops had quoted $500. I would say it's not as "cheap" as it used to be...maybe that's what my friends had remembered. My wife had 4 dresses to be altered, 1 for our engagement photos, 1 for our rehearsal and dinner, 1 for our wedding ceremony, and 1 for our reception. She dropped them off months in advance to give them enough time to make the alterations, and they promised they've have them ready with weeks to spare. My wife had to make repeated trips back for fittings, and things just weren't completed or completed correctly, the sizes were all off, the seams and hems uneven. Finally, the week of the wedding, she was there day after day to try and get everything finished in time, but we couldn't get the dresses till the morning we were leaving, and then it turns out they RUINED EVERY DRESS, nothing was sized correctly, hems were bad, they had taken out too much material. My wife was devastated, and had to order a dress online and have it over-nighted to our hotel room. The night before the wedding my wife and her mom were pinning it up because they didn't have time to get it tailored. Don't bring these amateurs your clothes, you'll regret it. read more

I've been to Nelda's several times to get my work clothes altered, and they have always done a nice job. Recently, though, they went above and beyond the call. Right before my wedding (which happened to be over a long holiday weekend), I realized to my horror that my dress no longer fit. I called Nelda's in a panic and even though they were already swamped with customers, they managed to get me in for a fitting and take the dress in within a couple of hours. It made a huge difference in the look of the dress, and it was an incredible relief to get it altered so fast! read more

As a man of .. um larger carriage, clothes are expensive and sometimes hard to find. I had 3 pairs of pants, one with a rip on the back pocket, the other two needed buttons replaced. I took them to Nelda's on a Tuesday after work and was able to pick them up the next day after work, and wore a pair on Thursday. The service was fantastic, I was remembered and called by name, made to feel welcome and will use them again! The price for the repairs was WAY cheaper than buying new pants!! I took my clothes in to have them alter on August 30, 2014. I gave her two weeks to complete seven items, well two weeks turn in to two months and one week, and my clothe was still not done. I told her on November 8, just give me my clothes, they were not even done, but she claim they was done, but they was not, I tried them on to shoe nothing had been done. I do not recommend this place to anyone, the wait is crazy and the repairs are questionable on what was really done. read more
