We stopped here on the way to the Wallowas for backpacking with the llamas! There were 12 of us! It took awhile, but once we ordered the orders came out pretty quickly. Most ate burgers, but I don't eat beef and or chicken if I don't know where it is sourced. So, I ate a tuna sandwich. One of the few things not fried. It isn't food I would normally eat, but the group had decided to go there, so ok. It had a nice picnic table area under apple trees which was nice. We didn't want any of those franchise fast food restaurant, we want real food, but we also want hamburger, and this one grabbed our attention because it also have old fashioned ice cream. Great grilled 2 hot dogs on a hamburger bun, sliced up in halves. It had shredded lettuce, sauce & relish. From now on, this is HOW I'll be eating my hotdogs! Deluxe hamburger and it was just perfectly cooked, fresh just like it was home-made. The bun was perfect. Great dipping sauce for the curly fries, we ordered small, but they were very crispy, HOW FRIES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE! The have a large selection Menu list! Negatives: They only take cash! It's a drive-in. You park, eat, then go back again to order your ice cream, which was huge! Back to park under the tree, like we just did, making a U-turn, and we also asked for a cup of ice. They need to learn how to be more efficient! I ordered one milkshake and waited 45 minutes to drive up one spot to pay when the shake had been ready right after ordered. The car in front of me ordered $70 worth of food and my shake sat there; ready and melting. They should have had the large food order pull up to wait while the small orders can go through with minimized wait time. Not smart and bad business operations! read more

Sadly not a place I'd recommend or return. Food was adequate but not good. I had a salad burger (cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato&onion) the patty was very thin and while I appreciated the bun had been grilled it wasn't a great sandwich. My husband had a bacon burger of which he commented the bacon was "plastic" and you could hurt yourself on it. Kids didn't complain however the grilled cheese was very dry and hard but did have a nice buttery flavor. Korn Dog was split open and overdone. The curly fries come as a hard brick and are really more like potato sticks as they are so crispy. The butterscotch malt had a good flavor but was full of ice crystals. Sort of a dearth of places in La Grande, which is odd for a college town. So we always stop at Nell's 'n Out when we are coming to and from camping somewhere. One of the only places open on Sunday. last three times I've been there has been a ridiculously long wait. That I can over look for good food but every time they have added stuff on my burger I specifically ask not to have. (I'm allergic to certain things) they don't pay attention and then on top of it won't answer the phone afterwards when I try to call to get it fixed. In our never ending search for the perfect hamburger and chocolate shake, we stopped in LaGrande at Nell's In and Out. It was an interesting experience. Let me first say, I was not disappointed. The hamburgers were good, the shake was fine - nothing wrong with either. Would I go back? Only if I could understand their menu. It is huge and it is posted on a sign as you drive in. There are 16 burgers alone listed without any explanation as to what they are - for example, you can order a Bobby Burger or a Double Bobby Burger. WTH is a "Bobby Burger"? I just went with a Double Burger, not realizing that if I wanted lettuce and tomato, I needed to order the "Salad Double Burger". I guess if you are a local, you know these things, but as a "flat landers" venturing into town, we needed a little more explanation to make our "dining" experience more enjoyable. Fortunately we arrived on a nice day and were able to eat at the picnic tables, but, since there is no indoor seating, in inclement weather eating there might be an ordeal. So, four stars because they are exactly what they say they are - an "in and out". Four stars because they are friendly and the food is made to order. We come here for the drinks but the food is pretty good too. Food is your basic burger joint fare but they have a huge drink menu. You can spend a long time figuring out what to get. I recommend the Scotty. As others have said, there is no place to sit (its a drive up) and everything is made to order so don't expect McDonald's speed but this place is worth a visit. Stop! You have to go here!! I have been going here since I was a kid. Whenever we are in town we always stop!! It's a tradition I was happy to finally include my kids in this last stop. They loved the Krinkle Pup, polar bear drink and the fried zucchini fries. The Polar Bear drink has been what my mom got and now that's what I get. Decent drive up burger fare featuring some finger foods that you don't normally see like fried pickles, fried mushrooms, etc. Cost is pretty low, and serving sizes are fair. My only complaint is that fried items are often overly greasy, if you order the shoestring fries, get a LOT of napkins. I can never finish an order because of all the excess grease and salt, but apparently some people love that. The REAL difference maker at Nells is the mixed drinks, these are awesome, and I've never seen this done anywhere else. Ask for recommendations, and you will find something you like, but you just try the Polar Bear or Winnie the Pooh, my favorite pick me up drink is the Curbstomper and I normally hate energy drinks! read more

So yummy! We stopped here for lunch on our drive from Portland to Salt Lake. We wanted burgers, but the thought of the typical fast food chains is enough to gag a maggot! After reading other reviews on Yelp, we went to Nell's. It was a bit of a wait, but sooo worth it! Between the burgers, the corn dog, the grilled cheese, the tots & fries, and milk shakes.... everything was great!! Not a moly was the food good, but the service was awesome! So friendly! And, they have the dog a small scoop of ice cream as a treat! We will definitely make this place a habit when we travel through again. read more

Only the very best drive thru out there! The drink list is impressive. So much to choose from. Polar Bears, Tootsie Bear and Wipeouts are my faves. The food takes a while to be made because it's made when you order. But the curly fries, crinkle pups and cheese dogs are worth the wait. Not to mention the amazing fry sauce!!! I ordered curly fries which looked like a bunch of worms. They were limp and flavorless. The Nell's burger was OK, but the meat patty was a typical frozen burger. I only ate half because I didn't have enough sauce to make it better. Also, don't expect a quick drive-threw. It takes a while for them to put the food together.
