Our car broke down while MOVING cross-country. It basically can't suck anymore than that, cause let me tell you, there's nothing quite like hearing the transmission go out and becoming stranded on the side of a snowy OR highway...
Well, guess what.
The lovely, charming, wonderful people of the little community of Meacham (a town whose "home base" so to speak is the Oregon Trail Store & Deli) turned a nightmarishly awful experience into a surprisingly... awesome one! It all started when, after a few locals had driven past asking if we need help (some even got out of their cars and tried to help), one of them recommended we try to scoot the car a little further, to the "Café," he said.
We made it there, and we couldn't have been gladder we did. This tiny, homey, eclectic-y cabin-style store/deli/café/hub literally had a crowd of people coming outside to help push our car into the little parking area in front... I'm not kidding!!! Even some folks pulling up helped.
It turns out they were having the Friday night get together of a lot of the locals, and guess what. One gracious and amazing gentleman (the one who originally directed us to the café originally) actually insisted to pay for us to be included in their [what might as well have been] home-cooked get together. Everyone was asking if we needed further help, checking to make sure we'd be OK, etc.
We spent some time there (while awaiting assistance from family in WA) talking to the very sweet female owner and getting to know some of the locals. The food was exquisite, the service [obviously] couldn't have been nicer, and guess what. I saved the best for last:
Around closing time, again "I kid you NOT," the owner told us to stay and hang out in the restaurant---after hours. "Just turn off the lights and lock the back door on your way out, if you don't mind," she said. How incredible is that? To trust two complete strangers (my gf & I) with your place like that? They graciously let us stay in the warm café equipped with large flat screen HD television and DirectTV. Just because she didn't want us having to be out in the cold car with no where to go.
As you can kind of tell, this review is not only one for the Oregon Trail Café, but also one for the people of Meacham in general. Experiences like that truly warm the heart and help to restore ones faith in humanity. Pure kindness and caring. Wow.
We promised them we'd return for a visit just as soon as we can, and we will, for another few plates of mouth-watering, home-cooked goodness and the feeling of being surrounded by warmth, friendship, and community. They told us of some great local camping and we can't wait to try it out.
I really hope the great people of Meacham see this review. They have truly earned my gratitude, respect, and love. If I could give 6 stars, I would, and believe it or not in all my years of Yelping (7 years now, with more than 600 reviews thus far), I do believe that's the first time I've EVER said that in ANY review to date.
