On our drive from Boise, ID to Portland, OR we grabbed a quick lunch. The shake had real huckleberries, the burger was good and big enough to split with my 15 yr old daughter. My husband was thrilled that they had tots. The staff was very friendly and the food came out pretty quickly for the 5 of us. We ate our shake while we waited. While on a recent road trip, in search of a state that was open... we found this little diner open "dine in seating" allowed! Thank goodness! The 3rd star is for the atmosphere. Great 50's style hamburger joint, but the greatness ends there... Food is just okay. The prices are expensive, and what really adds insult to injury is that they charge $1.00 to season your burger patty. You heard that right, salt is $1.00 extra. You would think in a small town, having such a historic location, a business would embrace the small town "gratitude", and not act overwhelmed when customers walk in, and not nickle and dime you for essentially worthless additions. We were also charged $1.00 extra to turn a shake into a malt. That's insane, when you realize a malt is simply the sprinkling of malt powder on the ice cream. If that wasn't enough to make your snort, there's a scale for the ice cream. If your overpriced scoop exceeds the set weight limit, they scoop some back. Oy vey. The employees for the most part are friendly, if not embarrassed by the owner's policies. The owner doesn't let the employees cook the burgers, which just reinforces everything else about this place that says "I DONT TRUST YOU!!" To remind patrons of this, there's a sign on the window pleading with customers not to come in if they are sick, because if the cook gets sick the restaurant will close. It's burger flipping, not rocket science. I doubt any of this review will resonate with the owner, as she has heard it countless times before. However, here's holding out hope that one day she will loosen her grip and allow this charming burger joint be all that it can be. read more

Excellent local flavor. A destination favorite with the valley's locals. Open most Sundays, which is really rare for a locally owned restaurant in this area. A great "old school" burger and ice cream joint! Our Mountaineer Burgers with tots were grilled with care--we could see them being made--and were delicious, with juicy, flavorful patties. The atmosphere here is wonderful. This is the only place in La Grande to get ice cream in multiple flavors. The burgers taste better than the fast food places around town. Went to Houghts earlier today and no one was wearing a mask. I mean the people who weren't eating!!! Just standing around BS'ing. Inside and outside. I usually don't take my kids here because the burgers are paper thin, you get a couple of fries, it is ridiculously expensive and takes a minimum of 2 hours with snooty help, and if there is a 10th of an ounce too much ice cream, they take it off your cone. Seriously. Anyway, the kids really wanted licorice, so I caved. I got the kids masks on, hit the front door and saw a Delta Variant Lolapalooza!! I grabbed the kids and we left immediately!! We stopped in here for lunch before moving our kid into the dorm. Make sure to give yourself time if you are getting a burger because they make it to order. Everyone loved their burgers. Nothing fancy but just plain good. We were disappointed in the tots and fries because you definitely don't get your money's worth or even close to it. I ran out of gas on I-84 and this nice firefighter gave me a lift. To pay him back, I bought him an ice cream, and this is the place he sent me. I had a malt, and it was on-point!! Classic malt powder, not some weird squirt stuff. Real ice cream and not milk, not that weird air puff thing some people do. The staff was so great. I'm already a social butterfly, but these ladies held a great conversation. I have them pointers on how to make great chicken&waffles, they were really engaged but also working hard. Takes a long time to make a milk shake worth $5, and this one was!! A dude from Clemson was there, eating a burger and he said it was a 4/5. I love this place because it's like a time machine. Super-fantastic place for a little whimsical, old-fashioned tastiness on a hot day! One child's bubblegum cone for the little guy, two double scoops of bubblegum in waffle cones for my teenage girls and a coconut-pineapple shake for myself, and we were all more than happy after our dessert. All of it came to less than $15, so I passed the $5 change into their tip jar. The service was spectacular! Thanks to the two ladies who shared their smiles with us and put us in even better moods! My boyfriend and I love this place! After our favorite date-night Restaurant closed down, we decided to give Hought's a try. As college students, what really defines a great eat-out joint is a mixture of cheap and delicious. Hought's has a huge menu and a lot of customizable options for burgers. The choices were overwhelming at first but we have made it a challenge to try every item on the menu. The first time we went to Hought's it was our one-year anniversary and we were not disappointed. We were able to get two burger meals w/fries, a premium large mixed-drink, side of onion rings, and two-scoop ice-cream cones (each) for under $25 with tip! Plus, even though we ate a lot, we didn't have that achey feeling in our stomachs afterward. We have come to think that this is because the food is all local and non-greasy. We saw our burgers taken out of the refrigerator and fried on the stove; brings new meaning to fresh never frozen. The place has a nostalgic feel to it and a history rich with small business success! I love how all of the food is listed as local and organic, especially since outside date night, I try not to eat non-GMO and organic food as much as possible. I love that I don't have to destroy my digestive system for a night out. All and all, I can say that Hought's has far surpassed our former favorite restaurant. We get a lot more food for about the same price as the old restaurant and we have more choices. We also noticed that the owner was present and cooking food while we were there! I've been two Houghts 24 flavors about three times now and each time I question why I went there to begin with. The environment is nice but it could be so much better than it is. The diner is set up like the old 50's styles diners which is awesome, but it just lacks the finer touches that could really set it apart and make it stand out and ultimately make it a destination spot in La Grande. Each time I have been in I have ordered different hamburgers and each one was just average with an above average price. I am amazed at how much my bill is every time I go to Houghts. My wife and I went the first time and got two burgers, two fries a soda and a milkshake and we walked out paying about $30. I was shocked to say the least. I didn't even pay attention to the prices when ordering because I figured a burger joint would be reasonably priced. Not so. It also took forever to get our food each time we went in. The lady behind the counter was cooking one hamburger at a time and there were a couple n front of us waiting so we got our food about 25 minutes after we ordered. The shake didn't show up till about 45 minutes later. Not sure what the deal was, but the slow service has been consistent each time we've gone in. The shakes are pretty good, but for $5 they better be. Overall I don't think I'll be going back any time soon. Edit: 07/2014 Still very slow on the grill. Why do you cook one hamburger or order at a time????? Get someone on the grill who knows how to cook multiple burgers! Please!! read more

What a fun place! We were traveling to Boise this weekend and decided to stop at La Grande for lunch and gasoline. Took the first exit into La Grande which took us through the older part of the city. While driving down Adams Ave. we saw this little old place on a corner called Hought's 24 Flavors. Aha, I thought just the place for a great burger and a shake. Inside looks like an old soda fountain shop - red stools, that spin, lined the counter, only four tables inside and several outside. We were welcomed by a very friendly staff (3 people). You order from the counter where there is a pretty extensive menu of items - pretty much what you would expect. We both ordered the Hought's burger, which is a seasoned patty (25 cents more than the regular, but it is the way to go, burgerwise) - it was really good. Not the best burger I've ever had, that will always be found at the Helvatia Tavern, but a good burger. My wife had a chocolate shake, which was not chocolatey enough for her discerning palate, thus the four stars instead of five. The sign says they have 24 flavors of ice cream, but I think it is wrong. I believe they have more! I order a salted caramel shake - don't think I've ever seen that on a menu before. It was great. If you are passing through La Grande (if you live there I am pretty sure you already know about it), I recommend you stop and give them a try. While you are eating, try to figure out the "Oregon cities" puzzle on the table - it will make you laugh. Saw the cutest little boy come in, crawl upon on the counter stools, and spin around. His head was barely over the countertop. In his most mature voice he said, "I want some ice cream!" The girl behind the counter, even though she was busy, took time to talk to him and patiently wait for him to decide which of the 24+ flavors he wanted. Kudos to her! read more

This is the crown jewel of La Grande. The burger is among the best, the flavor, the juiciness and the buns are all absolutely top notch. There are so many incredible ice cream flavors to choose from as well. The gummy bear flavor is out of this world!!! The atmosphere is great, if you really soak it in, can be just like hopping into a time machine. Carla is the nicest, sweetest, most sincere and hardworking small business owner you will ever meet. All of the negative reviews of this place were clearly people who were just in a bad mood and should not take it out on this absolute gem.
