I tried researching online on my own, but every company's site required me to answer *many* questions before it would give a quote, and I didn't know if I was checking with *all* available insurance providers. (Turns out I wasn't.) As it happened, I came across an article about finding insurance, and it recommended contacting an *independent* insurance broker, and that led me to finding Avail Insurance Solutions. Avail wound up finding a renter's insurance provider and one for earthquake coverage; the combined premiums totaled about the same as what my new, higher rate would have been for renters coverage only. So, I'm very happy with Avail's service.

Recently, my insurer drastically increased my rates without informing me why and the only way to address this was to work with Brian. I got in touch with the office and expressed my interest in getting this corrected or having other options before my policy renewed and managed to get Brian on the phone to discuss. He promised I would receive options or a solution by the next business day. I never heard back. I ended up switching to a different insurer (not through avail) and it took multiple attempts to get Avail to cancel my old policy. I think of the whole point of working with an agent is to get better service than dealing directly with an insurer -- with Avail that was certainly not the case.

We were assigned to someone else, but our previous guy highly recommended Tiffany and we switched to her. They are prompt and friendly with every question I send to them. Tiffany herself and I have a call at least once a year to go over our situation and insurance needs and change things, whether up or down, as is appropriate. I don't think you will find anyone better in the Bay Area.

Overall, my experience with Tiffany's office was positive at first. Their rates were more…read moreaffordable than many other insurance companies, communication was good, and the process was smooth. Unfortunately, that changed when it came time for my renewal. My premium increased by about 60%, despite the fact that I had a clean driving record with no accidents, tickets, or points on my license. The increase seemed excessive, and the only alternatives offered were to significantly reduce my coverage to lower the premium. For me, that wasn't a practical solution. If I'm paying for insurance, I want coverage that will actually protect me when I need it. I understand that this was something that occurred with State Farm across the board. However, I still believe the local office bears some responsibility for how it was handled. I received an email notifying me that my premium would increase substantially and was told to call or email if I wanted to make adjustments to my policy. The new premium would have been about one and a half times my monthly car payment. I had been with State Farm for several years in the past and had been back with them for another year or two, so this was especially disappointing given that I had no at-fault accidents, tickets, points, or any other issues on my driving record. The explanation I was given was that the increase was due, in part, to false claims being filed by other people. In my opinion, if State Farm fails to accurately anticipate the cost of doing business or fails to adequately investigate the validity of claims before paying them, those are business failures--not consumer failures. I don't believe customers with clean driving records should be expected to absorb the cost of those shortcomings through dramatic premium increases. Because of the substantial rate increase and the lack of reasonable options to maintain adequate coverage, I ultimately decided to switch to another insurer.
