Very generous breakfast sandwiches that have 3 eggs! They have the usual breakfast meats and also some special ones like "pork roll" which is a Philly or NJ sliced deli meat. I got hashbrowns on my sandwich which was that shredded kind. Nice lady who cooks the food for you. read more

Just started going their since it's close to my new job. Tried the meatball sub... it was the best. And tonight I had the steak and cheese. And once again I was not disappointed. Staff was very friendly and helpful. And in the morning the owner is usually there to greet you and if you have time he is a very interesting person to chat with. This place is going to be my goto when I get out of work early. Or go in early. Can't wait to try more menu items in the future.​ read more

Come here for a great sandwich and a true community experience! The gentleman who owns the place is a hoot and has a story about just about everything and manages to find a way to relate to everyone who walks through the door! Wesleyan kids help behind the counter, and even though the older woman who's also back there isn't particularly friendly and is slightly off-putting considering the vibe of the rest of the store, it still feels like you've found 'your' local deli! The cheesesteak is great, NY made sourdough is fun and different, and they can pretty much make anything you want! I'll absolutely be back to try the rest of the menu. read more

Found this little gem after my mom had a procedure at the hospital and she was hungry after. Glad I stopped bc the owners, a married couple, were positively charming and friendly. Real small town feel to the place which serves up a traditional yet diverse menu. They stopped and chatted a bit which is a nice change from the fast-food "serve me my food now and get out of my way" attitude so typical of today. I question of the validity of the racist accusations of the other reviews, as there was a young African American gentleman ahead of me, and they were chatting it up with him as if he was like a son; first name basis, laughing, asking about the family etc. not the behavior or a racist! There were a couple of seeming regulars behind me also who were of diverse ethnic backgrounds. Sounds like the other reviewers need attitude adjustments and learn to get along better with others. It was nice to see a small mom and pop place doing well after the issues so many small business had during Covid. I wish them well and continued success. read more

Cramped and friendly family-owned deli with a diverse menu (from hot/cold lobster rolls to all-day breakfast sandwiches and everything in between. Small seating area with a few tables in the rear. The macaroni salad was solid. The breakfast sandwich was perfect. The coffee a touch too cool. If you're headed to a Wesleyan athletic event (e.g., at the Freeman Athletic Center) it's a great spot to stop for a coffee, snack, or sandwich-- just leave some time as the line doesn't move that fast. 3.5 star food and 4.5 star attitude gets them 4.0 overall. read more

Stop right there ! Don't look any further for one of the best sandwiches in town . This place has been running for over 25 yrs strong right next to Wesleyan University where they've fed campus kids and workers for decades . They have a sandwich board loaded with names of friends and famous people they've met as the titles of their creations . I saw a few I cant wait to come back for like the Nor'easter (a lobster quesadilla) or Doug's Chicken Cheesesteak. This place is a one stop shop with a full store packed with drinks,chips and muchies along with a deli and sandwiches made to order . Today my son just wanted a simple turkey and cheese wrap and it was packed with it . He loved that nice and filling. I decided on the Fran's Philly Cheesesteak which had cheese,onions ,s&p.and ketchup(opted for mayo instead ) . What a delicious meal that was. Rather a paradox of a place, with an old-school feel inside but a relatively modern menu that has some interesting twists and original creations alongside the more traditional items. I very much enjoyed my "Mo' Tasty" panini, which had chicken cutlet, roasted eggplant, American cheese, chipotle mayo, hot sauce, and guac - I was skeptical of the combination, but it worked! It was good enough that I assume and hope this is a popular spot for students when school is in session. read more

Sandwiches are expensive. They were outright rude. I waited 5 minutes in line ready to order, for the owner to tell the sandwich maker to skip me and take three other orders after me. She then yells to me, "CAN I HELP YOU" with all the attitude you can muster up. Uncalled for. What a bummer. Sandwiches were greasy and soggy anyways. It is all my fault.... I should have stopped at the front door when I saw the sign that said "Philadelphia/New York Style Deli." I've never seen claims like this before. I walked in today, a Sunday about high noon. The line was out the door, I figured I'd stay because it seemed like a good sign and I had heard positive feedback previously about Neon Deli.... Then, once buried in the line it dawned on me I made a mistake. The line was out the door due to the slowest service ever seen at a "deli." I waited in line for 30 minutes, again all my fault. I ordered a simple sandwich, paid an exorbitant price for it and finally emerged from this sad establishment nearly 45 minutes later. I had been duped... I knew it would happen, a busy Sunday afternoon and they had two people working. I have never seen a deli, including those high volume 24 hour establishments in Brooklyn and Manhattan move this slowly. The chicken cutlet on my sandwich was microwaved to luke-warm, one side was soggy and cold and it had American cheese melted on it which I hadn't ordered... I threw the sandwich away in disgust. I waited in line for over 30 minutes for this! Again, I didn't take the blatant hints that it wouldn't end well. Neon deli is a dive, a seemingly student run sandwich shop on the Wesleyan campus. It is by no means "New York Style" and any self respecting sandwich lover should stay FAR away! Leave this place to serving hungover students. read more

A staple of any Wesleyan student's diet, Neon is STILL the best place to get a sandwich in Middletown. Many describe Joel's Cajun Wrap as a religious experience, part of the holy pantheon of sandwiches. I usually go for some kind of pepper turkey, smoked gouda, and tons of veggies. Neon sandwiches are intended to be paired with something fizzy from the massive selection of drinks, and consumed on top of Foss Hill. You can try to eat them somewhere else - but I swear, they won't taste the same. Everyone at Neon is extraordinarily friendly. The only time I had a bad experience was in the middle of reunion, when everyone and their mother (literally) were standing in line for a sandwich. Otherwise, the owner has been incredibly kind to students over the years - he once let me pay for my sandwich the next day because I ran out of cash. They charge a hefty price for labor, so don't come here if you're looking for a confused sandwich or any other sort of quick service meal, because it's anything BUT quick. I stopped by one day looking for some fresh/homemade tomato sauce. I knew there was a chance they wouldn't have any, but I don't think it is an unfounded product for a "deli and market" to have, especially one that is seemingly Italian. After a couple of minutes I was greeted by someone who I presumed to be the owner, and when I asked if they had any "fresh tomato sauce," he was very curt and rude. First he said "yeah, its right there" and pointed to the jarred sauce two feet in front of us, as though I was blind. I then explained that I was actually looking for some freshly prepared stuff, even though that's what I had already said. This apparently puzzled and set him off, and he went on a rant about how "there was no way I would find that at a deli" and that "maybe I could try a pizza place or something, but I don't know why you think you'd get that here." Ok buddy. I have been to plenty of italian delis that sell their homemade tomato sauce. Zerios in Cromwell and Italian Gourmet Deli in Newington are just two examples. I was only stopping by this one because I was in the area. Side note, apparently that means they use jarred sauce for their chicken parm subs, etc, too, which I would not be pumped about. Why not just say "sorry, we don't carry that" and move on? It was almost like he was insecure that they didn't sell their own sauce, and had to justify it at the cost of alienating a potential customer. The owner is racist. I try to buy a drink and he takes ten minutes to chat up the one person in front of me, a white individual finished with the shopping, while he sees me there waiting. They're having the time of their lives. Then when he finally looks at me, his entire demeanor changes, he becomes cold and curt, doesn't look in my direction a second time throughout the entire transaction, dismissively tells me he won't accept credit (not accepting credit is totally fine - the obvious discrepancy in how he treats non-white people? No), and can't get me out of the store fast enough once he's finally done making me wait. It's a privilege to work at Wesleyan, so I'm not quite sure why we allow him to stay. read more

Excellent deli, very tiny, small and crowded inside, but the sandwiches, wraps, quesadillas, and paninis are amazing. They have every option one could ever imagine and apparently are even working towards a Reuben quesadilla...which sounds amazing. The owner is extremely rude and treats customers poorly. If you look at the food in the fridge you will notice that much of it is rotten and moldy. Dust adorns the ceiling and the cords that dangle from the broken light fixtures. Mediocre food and worse owners. better off spending your money at McDonalds than with this awful deli. Neon deli has poor customer service, the food takes forever to come. I ordered my food in advance and they gave it away to someone else, and now i'm on a 5 hour bus ride and I'm mad hungry. If neon deli even had a hint of competition it would be out of business in a day. Figure it out. read more

The Wesleyan students are Neon's main clientèle, and they used to serve them well, albeit slowly; now they are just as overpriced as everything and underpar else. Even after they got pricey I'd still come here from time to time for a sandwich, but things are hit-or-miss. My last sandwich was a large sub, but it had less meat than I'd put on regular sandwich bread. I think Neon's usefulness has been reduced to late-night emergency snack runs. read more

Horrific customer service by one of the sandwich makers... I waited 15 minutes while they ignored me and served everyone else. The girl didn't even know what romaine lettuce was. Broad panoply of creative sandwiches. Joel's Cajun wrap stands out. $8+, a little pricey but what can you do. In 4 years at Wes I probably paid Fran's daughter's tuition eating here after track. We are used to stop on our way and shop in this store. After today's experience I am really disappointed. I do not know I will come back and spend any money there any more. Young guys working at the counter are more focused on young women than on their job and absolutely not family friendly. I would say even arrogant a little bit to customers. I understand that preparing sandwiches for kids and their parents is not so exciting as for young girls but we are human being too, and pay the same money as other people. I do not know maybe put an order by phone can help as they strongly suggested, but what with atmosphere I used to enjoy in public places? I would recommend hiring more experienced sale assistant. I hope that today's incident was only one in this deli and this place will still keep unique spirit and serve equally to everyone. I wish it to myself and to them. read more
