We've eaten our way up and down Main Street. Quite often we stop at to Cooking Company for some delicious desserts to go. Last night we had dinner there. They have a few premade items and a full sandwich and custom salads. We had the meatloaf and Chicken Caesar pasta. Both were tasty. They have a few tables so dining in is possible. The ambiance was nice, the service great and the best price on Main. As a suggestion offer bread or rolls to make it a more complete dinner. Oh we grabbed some dessert to go. Overall very good. I live in downtown Middletown and I try to support the local small businesses. This small store here is a gem. Whatever you're craving, they can meet your needs. Recently I decided to be adventurous and purchased their vegetarian "meatloaf". I was truly delighted in the flavor profile, texture, fresh taste and balance of flavors. It was very, very good. I will continue to support them in any way I can. Also, the service staff is always friendly and knowledgeable about the dishes and ingredients. So, this has become my go-to for quick comfort food in downtown Middletown. Not just for the quality food, obviously made with care. But for the great service and chill atmosphere. The staff there is super helpful in helping you pick from an ample deli menu or from the multitude of other prepared foods. My favorites so far have been the southwest chicken salad, the enchiladas, and the eggplant parm. Plenty of snacks, sides and drinks are available, both artisan and mundane. There are even some craft dog treats for doggo by the register. Prices are reasonable IMO as the portions are good and the ingredients are clearly fresh and high quality. All were picked up with dressings on the salad All had wilted lettuce and totally didn't look or taste fresh. 6 hours after the Caesar was eaten she was sick with explosive diarrhea The Cobb was wilted and just not worth eating Arizona was distinctly said to put dressing on side as person is allergic to pepper. There are places that you try to visit for weeks or months, and it seems like you'll never get there. Then one day, the stars align. You find yourself standing outside, with your hand on the door handle. The Cooking Company was my unattainable. The Cooking Company specializes in prepared and ready to cook meals, but they also have a great selection of desserts. My husband was home sick, so my son and I wanted to grab some chicken noodle soup for dinner. We called around to a few of our favorite places, with no luck. We decided to hit a place on Main Street. We found a parking spot on the street, not too far from our destination. Fortunate for us, the awning of The Cooking Company caught our attention. We made a b-line for the door. An employee greeted us as we walked toward the display cases. Of course the first case was desserts...my son was already drooling. As luck would have it, their soups for the day were split pea and chicken noodle. As the soup was ladled into cups, I browsed the remaining cases. There were so many choices; Brussels sprouts, chicken, fish, potatoes, salads, appetizers and more. Definitely a place that you could find something for everyone. There are menus by the cash register (not online). Currently there is a Super Bowl special menu. There is typically one offered for the holidays. The next one will be for Valentine's Day. We took our soup and desserts home to enjoy. The soup tasted like something your Grandma might make. There were a ton of veggies and chunks of white meat chicken. My only complaint was that the noodles practically melted in my mouth. The desserts (both under $5), were extraordinary. I was drawn to the Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse. A hard shell covering layered chocolate and peanut butter mousse with and thin, cake-like base. My son went for the prettier Raspberry Chocolate Tart. We were walking along Main Street on the way back to our car when I spotted the sign for this establishment so we stopped to see what was available in the way of prepared food. There was an amazing number and variety of salads and many desserts. I was a bit hesitant to purchase an entree out of concern for freshness since there was only one of each. We did end up purchasing a lasagna that was pretty good though we have had better. Another purchase was gazpacho that not only looked fresh, but was both fresh tasting and delicious. I was on Main Street in Middletown with some time to spare before an appointment and as I was driving by I spotted this little spot and decided to give it a try. Setting: Beautiful hardwood flooring with 2 eat in areas. One in the front and one in the rear of the shop. Nice lighting with soft music playing and a very relaxed zen vibe is what you will get at The Cooking Company. Service: The servers were friendly, attentive and efficient. My server took his time letting me decide what I wanted to try and gave great suggestions. Bright smiles and great convo from everyone. Food: seriously the BEST part. They have a vast selection of pre-prepared dishes with meat and non meat options, salads and sandwiches if you want to grab and go or what to grab for lunch or dinner the next day. Everything that is ordered in the shop is made right in from of you with super fresh ingredients. I ordered the Signature salad and the apples that went into the salad were cut right then! The salads are huge and can literally fill 2, maybe even 3 people and it was only 9 bucks! I tried the homemade Raspberry Lemonade and seriously went back to get another before I left because it was so good! So many fresh, healthy and tasty options! There is a case full of prepared foods such as roasted vegetables, kale salad, eggplant Parmesan, spinach and tomato polenta, etc...as well as suggested salads and build-your-own salads. Good sandwich selection too. The salad portions are huge! We went in the evening a little before closing so it was not very busy. We sat and ate in the nice seating area in the back. Service was great-they didn't even rush us when we lost track of time and sat for a few minutes past closing time! My understanding is they will start offering soups soon! Perfect for fall/winter. My mother and I had about a half hour to burn and a desire for dessert. We arrived at The Cooking Company roughly a half hour before the closed and were greeted warmly. The restaurant was clean, bright, and welcoming. My mother and I went right over to the dessert case with wide eyes. Everything looked so good! My mother selected the chocolate mousse and I selected the chocolate/peanut-butter mousse. They were so rich and delicious but we should have split one because we each only ate half of ours before we had very satisfied "sweet tooths". We also both got coffee and even a half hour before they closed the coffee was really good. The restaurant also had a bunch of prepared food which I couldn't be less interested in, I do not like to reheat food like that. My review is based solely on the service and not the taste of the food. Popped in there last night for a treat after the tree lighting in town and ordered a mini cheesecake and a cookie. To my horror, the woman working grabbed my cheesecake with her bare hands and put it in a box. Yet, she used tissue paper to grab the cookie. Perplexing. I didn't say anything but I wish I had because it cost me almost $9 for the 2 and the cheesecake went right in the trash. Not overly thrilled with our sandwiches yesterday. Drive by and thought of all the lovely meals we had gotten from the Killingworth location after the beach or doc appointments down the shore. So very disappointed! I got a simple baguette (which was loaded with flour on the bottom which grossed me out cus I wasn't sure why it was there or if it was raw-as they say not to ever eat raw flour) with raw spinach, two slices of tomato. Overall I might give it another try but maybe not in the afternoon so the bread was fresher? I grabbed an Honest Tea out of the cooler which was the best part of the meal. The first thing you see when you walk in is their desserts. O. M. G. I got the Chocolate raspberry mousse - will update once I taste it! You pick up an order ticket like you would at a deli. They have their prepared foods after the desserts. I got the stuffed sole, kale salad and am taking home the eggplant salad to have at dinner tonight. They also have a make your own salad and sandwich area, as well as their signature salads that are made right in front of you. The sole was yummy in my tummy! Not too much breading in the stuffing and not too much sauce so you can taste the deliciousness of the fish. The kale salad was a bit harsh against the sole as it was very lemony but I'm sure it would be good with a piece of crusty bread. They have a big open table that seats about 12 with swivel-out chairs which is cool. And they have a few smaller tables for two people. They also have in their fridge some take home cartons of eggplant park, meatballs, Thai chicken, etc, but you can take any of their prepared foods home as well. Nice selection of drinks. Some friends and I decided to go here for a quick bite before catching a movie and we were very impressed with the options. Especially since we had some dietary restrictions in our group. Two of us went with the Asian salad (they have a more creative name for it) which was very tasty...and huge!! Next time I would definitely get the dressing on the side so that I could save half my salad for later. My other friend got the lasagna, which was also tasty. I've been to the Cooking Company at least a dozen times and have been to each of its locations in Killingworth, Haddam, and Middletown. On each occasion and today included, I was not disappointed! It is a solid casual lunch and dinner option in Middletown that you must try if you haven't already! The staff has always been friendly and kind when I've visited and although I regret to say that I don't love the prepped meal options, the salads and sandwiches are quite delicious and my favorite alongside their soups! My favorite is a pressed turkey sandwich with their chipotle mayo, lettuce, tomato, and avocado or the Arizona chicken salad which comes with black beans, tomatoes, tortilla strips, romaine, and cheddar cheese. Both of these meals are exactly what I'm seeking every time I get them and the quality is consistently good. Though the cost may be considered a bit pricey for a sandwich or salad, it is always enough food for me to cover at least two meals if not three with the salad! (Note- ask for your dressing on the side though so it doesn't get soggy and wilt.) I visited again with a friend his afternoon and the employee who helped us was incredibly sweet and kind. Not only did he check the ingredients we wanted for our orders, but he also delivered my panini to the table and went above and beyond by giving us free cookies to celebrate my birthday. He even wrote a nice happy birthday message with balloons on mine after my friend had mentioned it when we were checking out. What a kind gentleman! From soups to salad to amazing signature sandwiches this place literately has it all. Today, I ordered the portobello mozzarella melt and it was delicious! I tried a few other sandwiches before and they were great too! The layout for this places is pretty nice too. Really like the cafeteria style dinning table in the back. I stopped in for dinner to go and was tempted by the cookies. I purchased a peanut butter cookie and a chocolate chunk cookie. I just sampled the peanut butter cookie and it was hard as a brick. The cookie could not have been freshly baked today or even yesterday. The other cookie seems softer but haven't tasted it yet. The atmosphere is inviting and the glass encasement proudly displays specialty bakery treats and freshly made side salads, etc. Seating is available- with tables scattered about so you don't feel like you're sitting on top of one another. The salad plates are huge with many tantalizing signature selections! We ordered the "New American Chef Salad" . And we also shared a Sante fe chicken sandwich on a toasted ciabatta- EXCELLENT! So you may ask "why the 4 stars?". The ONLY thing I noticed that caused me to drop a star was the handprints all over the doors and glass cases. That actually was my first impression. I recently bought a cobb salad. I usually order this salad without any issues. But this time the chicken had a fishy after taste. ( I ordered chicken not Fish) I contacted the cooking company and told them that I believed my chicken in the salad was bad. I told them I would bring the salad back for a refund. I had loss my appetite and my lunchtime by now. When I came into the store I addressed the issue with the Manager. And her response was we all tried the chicken its fine. Are you kidding me. I honestly didn't expect this response. I felt as if I was blatantly being told I was a liar. I have eaten here several times before without an issue ,but there customer service on this day was unbelievable.
