Was on our way somewhere else and just happened upon Third Base and based on the sign alone, we had to give it a go. So glad that we did! The bartender was super friendly and told us the entire history of the building. You can tell this is a community bar and the regulars are treated like family. When we said it was our first time, they gave us free shots and let us sign the legendary ceiling (which isn't always the case at local bars where regulars are their focus). Like an hour (ish) drive. So what's happening in HP? The Barn out Washington St. had a MemorialDay weekend all-day mostly-country music event 2pm to 10:30pm! Very nice. They have a great little bar inside, and sometimes have food from one of the restaurants across the parking lot, or just walk over for takeout, or i think i read that they deliver here. By the way, parking can get a little tight for a bigger event like this one, but we were early enough, maybe 1pm, and we scored a space when someone left. I might as well add that there's several clean restrooms sort of across from the bar. We settled into a huge comfy couch near the back of the hall, behind the seating for roughly 30 at tables and picnic tables. There was also seating for roughly 20 at tables out on a deck. The first solo singer-guitarist, D.C.'s Kate Smiles, had a lovely voice and sweetly original interpretations of rock and pop and country songs that i knew, and a presence that made me say, Hey, Wow, I can relax in this mellow mood with a really nice whiskey from a list that my local bar would envy. By the way, they were out of the local whiskey, Devil's Due, so i had a warming fiery oaky slightly-sweet Elijah Craig bourbon, neat, with a water back. Mmmmm. The second musician, W.V.'s Andrew Copenhaver, moved among soulful blues and country, some classics, some modern. He could put an edge on his voice, and he could hit some deep bass notes, so it was a real pleasure when he gave us Folsom Prison Blues. When you can hit that low note, you have a right to do some Johnny Cash. By now i was into some crisp local beers. That little bar really has everything, including a versatile bartender who made every drink we knew, and we sampled his skills as the third musician, NoVA's Mark Cullinane, took the stage. He had a wide range of country songs, including a moving original that made us feel we were driving in our pickup behind his dad's. He had a great rich tone and great range. Like the second musician, he used some kind of looper to create full layers of harmony. What with all the beverages, we started to fade a little as the music moved into the set by NoVA's seriously-country Rowdy Ace Band around 8pm. They really lit up the hall and the patio and probably a good piece of nearby Harpers Ferry. We eventually moved on to our reservations for dinner across the parking lot at Snallygaster's restaurant. But that's another story. We had a terrific afternoon and evening. The Barn will definitely be one of our go-to spots in this town, and we'll be looking to hear these musicians again!

We made reservations and asked about handicap accommodations for a wheelchair. There are two steps, and they had two wonderful gentlemen open the doors and bring up the non-motorized wheelchair and person easily and seat us at a convenient table already with a space of the wheelchair. Angie, our server, was so friendly and excellent, giving suggestions and her opinions on food as we asked and keeping our table cleared of used dishes and our water glasses full. Even with a busy night, our food was served in good time at a good temperature. Everyone loved their meals - seafood chowder, special steaks for the nights special, breaded pork cutlet (yum! reminded me of Wiener Schnitzel), appetizers and desserts. The tiramisu was a nice size serving and the dark chocolate custard (like a thicker mousse - was oh so amazing). Everyone had a great time and meal. One person said it was the best steak she ever had (the nightly special) and my husband was talking about coming back as we were leaving. For parties more than four, I think it would be good to make reservations early and to update the restaurant as the party size changes. Initially, we had a party of 8 which became 6. The table fit 6 perfectly, but 8 would have more difficult blocking the walkway or may have needed a table farther back or in the other room. I think it would be good to call for reservations in general, since it was a Monday night Christmas week and walk-ins were not accepted due to the number of reservations.
