Recommended by two people familiar with the area as being one of the best restaurants around, we brought our family here to celebrate the holidays early. Outstanding service and food! We made reservations and asked about handicap accommodations for a wheelchair. There are two steps, and they had two wonderful gentlemen open the doors and bring up the non-motorized wheelchair and person easily and seat us at a convenient table already with a space of the wheelchair. Angie, our server, was so friendly and excellent, giving suggestions and her opinions on food as we asked and keeping our table cleared of used dishes and our water glasses full. Even with a busy night, our food was served in good time at a good temperature. Everyone loved their meals - seafood chowder, special steaks for the nights special, breaded pork cutlet (yum! reminded me of Wiener Schnitzel), appetizers and desserts. The tiramisu was a nice size serving and the dark chocolate custard (like a thicker mousse - was oh so amazing). Everyone had a great time and meal. One person said it was the best steak she ever had (the nightly special) and my husband was talking about coming back as we were leaving. For parties more than four, I think it would be good to make reservations early and to update the restaurant as the party size changes. Initially, we had a party of 8 which became 6. The table fit 6 perfectly, but 8 would have more difficult blocking the walkway or may have needed a table farther back or in the other room. I think it would be good to call for reservations in general, since it was a Monday night Christmas week and walk-ins were not accepted due to the number of reservations. read more

Really disappointed in this place. This was my 2nd time there and got treated like a 2nd class citizen because I wasn't a regular or a stepford wife. Note to management: my money is just as green as theirs. Aside from the disgusting treatment, the food was incredibly subpar. Both times I went, the fish had barely any flavor and the was served luke warm. The risotto tasted like it was cooked from a can - so gross. I expected way more from this place, especially if you're going to charge these prices. Also treat new guests just as you would regulars please...it's really discouraging to feel so unwelcomed and then have a terrible meal 2x in a row. Will not be coming back. read more

Lots of rules.. I wasn't aloud to order the cheese special that they were offering in the bar. I love cheese as an appetizer and was really surprised that I couldn't order it at my table. I had the Borsao red with the Berry Pasta Tagliatelle with Lite Alfredo Sauce , Fresh Strawberries & Shaved Asiago and a bit of bread with olive oil. I had this pasta dish 10 years ago and just was ecstatic when I found it on the menu again. I remember it with blackberries. The strawberries were not the best flavor/sweetness wise but they were adequate, but the pasta and the special Alfredo sauce were delicious and worth the price. I also enjoyed the wine the bartender recommended, and the atmosphere was pleasant. read more

Ate here last night with two other guests. Restaurant accommodated us for a last minute reservation. Service was very good. Ambiance excellent. We all 3 had pasta dishes. Everything was perfect! Angie, our server was friendly, helpful and has a great personality. The menu items were unique and delicious! We had halibut cheeks! First I have seen on a menu since we visited Alaska. They were prepared and seasoned perfectly along with savory green beans and a lightly sauced pasta. The oyster stew was the best! A creamy, brined broth with spinach and potatoes along with the oysters resulted in a perfect oyster stew! The atmosphere was relaxed, cozy and intimate. What a jewel and we will be back! read more

We were visiting from out of town this week and this restaurant was highly recommended. Well, it didn't let down! The food was Devine and our server, David, was amazing. He was very thorough with describing the dishes, which I appreciated. We chose the oysters......omg, delicious! The mussels were so good and they were in the best broth I've ever tasted. Got one of the "specials" of the night, ribeye. Unfortunately it was God awful with unsuspecting harsh blue cheese butter that had already saturated in to the meat. Tried to return the ribeye and just get different dish. Owner/manager? initially agreed but then returned to say "the chef refuses to make you a different dish." I will add a caveat that I can count on one hand the number of times I've returned food. Just absolutely most disrespectful experience. Absolutely awful experience. We dine here whenever we stay at the Inn at Antietam in Sharpsburg, Maryland ( our favorite B & B). This time we were joined by 2 couples. The ambience is lovely as is the menu. The foods was delicious as usual and our group devoured every morsel of steak, pasta with artichokes, pasta bolognese, pasta with smoked salmon, gazpacho as well as 2 bottles of wine! Our server was efficient but not as personable and warm as we are used to having at this gem of a restaurant in the heart of Sheppardstown. All in all, a lovely evening and delicious meal. read more

Took two friends here for dinner this evening on Sunday without a reservation and we were seated right away. Everyone had a pasta dish and they were beautifully executed with a lot of good flavor and very generous portions. Nice low key atmosphere and the manager stopped by to say hi a couple of times. WOW. I have here for 5 of my friends and HIGHLY recommend. We were at the pool and this lady told us we had to go and we are so happy we got a reservation. We had a lovely waiter, a gentlemen who help us with all our annoying needs and questions. The food was GOOD. We got lots of it and all were very good. This place is wonderful! Great food! Great service! We shared an appetizer special consisting of figs with Gorgonzola that was wrapped in prosciutto & the whole thing sautéed. So delicious! So, for my first visit I will say the ambiance is fantastic for a tucked-in but elevated bite to eat or drink. It's a quaint spot and I really like the atmosphere. The bolognese was alright, but nothing remarkable that left a lasting impression. I was excited about the shrimp and white beans appetizer but it left a lot to the imagination as far as taste. I was disappointed that it was quite bland, which is especially important considering the texture of cooked white beans and how the flavor and texture have to work together to pull that off. After some serious salting it was alright, but salt alone wouldn't have made that a great small plate. I'm hopeful though that on my next visit, and I try something new, I'll be a full two thumbs up. read more

Snubbed as soon as my husband and I walked in. Yes, we are not white and aren't decked out in diamonds or expensive clothes, but we were well dressed nonetheless and hoping to enjoy a date while on vacation. We were asked if we had a reservation which we did not and we were told to wait to see if they could accommodate us. The restaurant was only 1/3 occupied and after some running back and forth for what seemed way too long, they finally seated us towards the back of the restaurant. We saw a group of 5/6 people come in with no reservations, but they were seated right away. The food was just okay. Felt the waiter seemed surprised to see us, but he did his best to be nice? Will not recommend if you are not white and upper middle class. read more

Came here on a work dinner and had really high expectations. I got the duck and it was really tough. Any good duck I have is usually extremely tender and juice, almost soft. It was not cooked well and not the greatest flavor. I tried my co-workers lamb and it was nothing special either. The oysters were good nothing amazing. si did love my apple desert but my colleague said her creme brûlée was nothing special. I think the atmosphere is amazing and special and the service top notch but the food isn't worth the price. I've had muchhh better of all the dishes we had. read more

This restaurant has the nicest ambiance of any place I have been to in Shepherdstown. The service was attentive. Our meal started with cantaloupe and blue berries. Then I had the frittata with tomato, olives, goat cheese, and basil. The flavors were there, but I was surprised to find a quantity of spaghetti noodles cooked in. They added texture, but I would vote to exclude them. A piece of garlic butter toast came with the order, and provided all the starch the dish needed. My wife had the pappardelle pasta mushrooms, sage, fontina and cream. I tasted it, and it was beautifully executed. Overall, it was a wonderful breakfast. We'll be back to try the dinner menu, and I wouldn't be surprised if a fifth star is in their future. read more

Oysters are amazing! Romantic setting! Great place to take the love of your life! Anything they do with mushrooms is great!

We had an 8 o'clock reservation and we were seated pretty quickly. Actually too quickly for our waiter who failed to materialize. The host eventually went and found him in the kitchen. During the entire evening we saw our waiter 4 times. The first two times were taking orders, (someone else delivered the drink and food) Two of those times were presenting the check and taking our credit card. We honestly would have had a second drink but no one bothered to ask! Despite really awful service the food was delicious. We had a lovely caprese salad. The cherry tomatoes were a really delicious add to it. For our entrees we enjoyed the duck and the hangar steak. The mashed potatoes served with the hangar steak were glorious. Our food was perfectly cooked. The steak was a true rare and the duck was medium rare. Absolutely perfect. All in all the food was good but did not compensate for the crummy service. read more

This incident occurred in August 2020. It was right before opening, and my daughter (who had never been) and I wanted to have dinner and drinks. A woman came out of the restaurant, and I asked if we could make a reservation. She responded by asking us what we would be ordering, and when I said appetizers and drinks, she said she didn't have any tables for us, and that we could sit outside (It was raining!). I'm sure if it was somebody she knew (lawyer, doctor, local politician), we wouldn't have had any problem getting a table. A restaurant choosing its customers is not what I expected. So my daughter and I instead went to the Bavarian Inn, and she loved it. By the way, we are white and were dressed nicely. I have been here before and the food is excellent. Great oysters. read more
