I had a Jamis Xenith Comp, which is my favorite bicycle, fully loaded and light as a feather; however, it was severely damaged by Hurricanes Milton and Helene. I took the bicycle to many shops, big and small, trying to get it repaired, but none would even attempt to repair it, only recommended buying a new bike. That was until I brought it to Neptune Cyclery, where Eddie Mullally and Jake, knowing how great the frame was and how special the bike is to me, accepted the challenge. Customer indifference. That's how I'd describe the attitude at this bike shop. I took my ebike in for a brake adjustment, gear fix, and to solve a clicking sound when I ride. I brought my bike in on a Saturday and was told it would be ready the following Tuesday. On Tuesday, I was told it would be Thursday. On Thursday, I was told it would be Saturday. I finally got my bike back, along with a bill for almost $200. I asked if I could take it on a test ride to verify the repair. I was told, you have to pay first. Okay, but what about a warranty? Was told there was none. After leaving my bike, I read all kinds of horror stories on Yelp. And while this doesn't qualify, it certainly is indicative of the lack of customer service. I should've check the reviews of this establishment before hand. But out of convenience that it's only a block away from my home I decided to just go there. Took 2 brand new bikes to have the front disk brake pads loosen. The owner asked me to leave them for 2 days, stating that he can also ensure that everything else was ok. When my wife goes to pick them up being that I'm out of town, he gives her a bill for $171. This guy is INSANE!!!! First of all, I put the bikes together myself being that I've had many bikes in the past. I test drove both bikes and the only thing it needed was a minor adjustment on the front brake pads because they were slightly rubbing against the rotor. So I called the shop and inquired to the owner as to what work exactly he performed on the bikes. He tells me he did a complete "tune up" A tune up for WHAT???? Then he blows me off by stating that he has a lot of work to do and can't be on the phone! there was nothing to be done to the bikes except for what I asked him to do! First impression of Neptune Cyclery was not good. A group of twelve of us were bikng on the Pinellas Trail in Tarpon Springs. I couldn't unclip from my pedal. I discovered a missing bolt holding my cleat to my shoe so I stopped in Neptune Cyclery to see if they had one. The shop was empty except for the guy behind the counter chatting with someone who wasn't a customer. When I got a chance I asked if he had a bolt. The response was appalling. Counter guy said he didn't have time to look for one. Not willing to argue, I left. We sent a pretty woman in to see if she could get him to do it. No luck. We sent someone willing to argue a bit in. She came out irritated with the guy. Draw you own conclusion, but my friends and I and whoever we tell will probably avoid this place in the future. A bit further down the Pinellas Trail I found Sun West Cyclery willing to dig through their miscellaneous parts bin. They found what I needed and fixed my shoe. Neptune take a lesson at what real customer service is like. I suggest you deep-six Neptune Cyclery. FOLLOW-UP: Here's the response I received from Neptune Cyclery owner Eddie Mullelly 2 yrs, 8 months after my review. "Hey Wes, I remember you, you were a rude obnoxious fat ass. I had a customer I was talking to and you came in and interrupted me asshole. Sun west closed, but I did hire their mechanic Steve. Good luck tubby, lose some weight and you won't crush your pedals!" I noticed he responds to bad reviews with very similar comments about the reviewer being fat. He doesn't really remember me because I'm 5'10" and weigh about 160 lb. He doesn't remember me because I waited patiently while he spoke with a person definitely not a customer and I politely jumped in at a stopping point in their conversation. This bike shop sucks. Plain and simple. Its tiny, doesn't have much. Smells like weed, and when we walk in, there was no worker. Then after us being in for about 5 minutes looking around, a door opens up and a guy comes in with no shirt on, he had come from the lounge next door. He never put a shirt on when he saw us. The owner was friendly and very helpful with suggestions of places to stop along the trail. Some of negative reviews for this shop are interesting - they seem to be from dumb*ss anti-maskers who supposedly have mystery "medical conditions" that make unable to wear a mask but able to ride a bike. Go figure. Ignore these stupid negative reviews. The owner clearly loves bikes and knows what he's doing. They didn't have a mechanic available to fix mine but quickly got me a perfect rental so I could join my friends in enjoying the great weather and trail. Riding my bike on the trail wasn't as pleasurable as it used to be. I found I was working much too hard to reach short distances and the bike felt like it was dragging , the shocks were flat and, gears shifting poorly. I brought it to Neptune for a tune up. When I got the bike back it was nicely cleaned up and the frame looked new. In addition to the tune up they recommended that I replace the shocks and tires. My Trek looked really good. Took a spin on the trail and downtown Tarpon, did that ever feel good. It was a different bike and I was flying, I mean the exhilaration of quiet speed and the air on your face, words cant express. I'd like to thank the people of Neptune for that feeling. read more

Nice guy working in the shop today (Sunday). I bought a bike (elsewhere) last week and to say I'm a novice is an understatement. When I got my bike out to ride Pinellas Trail today, my brakes were all messed up. Anytime I turned left the brakes would apply and even going straight brakes were brushing the tire. I must've spent 30 mins trying to figure out what's wrong. Pulled in to this spot on my ride and in seconds the guy chuckled and fixed the problem. I 180'd my steering wheel once too many times loading/unloading my bike from the car and wound the cable up. I didn't buy anything but the guy was still eager to help. read more

Years ago, my mom went to this bike shop to have her brakes fixed but ended up accusing the shop owner of stealing her brakes. I agree with some of the reviews that he shouldn't have been an asshole to the customers, but I was amazed at how that guy actually exposed my mother of being the reincarnation of the Tyrannosaurus Rex. My mother completely lost it in that store and made the guy mad. First time experience and will never go back. Had a flat riding along the trail. Asked the employee, who was opening up, if he could fix it for me. He said that he could get to it in an hour. I said, "Let me think it over. I might just go get my truck and take the bike home." He started yelling, "People ride this trail and expect me to stop everything I do and take care of them." I didn't say a word. I just looked at him. Then he said, "I have 3 other bikes to work on first." I totally understand about not taking care of me immediately, although the 3 or 4 other shops along the trail in north Pinellas usually take care of a flat ASAP. From 2006-2013, I've visited Neptune Cyclery 5x, when I visit Florida from Minnesota to ride the Pinellas Trail. I've been to 3 bike shops on the Pinellas Trail (one in Dunedin, one in St. Pete's, and Neptune Cyclery in Tarpon Springs), and about 30 bike shops around the country, and I have concluded that Neptune Cyclery is the best of the 3 I've visited in Florida, and one of the best I've EVER visited for the following reasons: 1. FAIR PRICING. The owner won't overcharge you for rentals and repairs, and sometimes won't even charge you full price, which is amazing for a tourist town. 2. NO UPSELLING. The owner, being a serious cyclist himself, is more interested in getting YOU on the road than in having you hang around the store while he upsells you stuff. 3. EXPERT OWNER. The owner knows not JUST about fancy new racing $1500 bikes, but about $160 racing vintage bikes (RB1s, Nishikis, Bianci Bravas, OLD Schwinns and Treks, etc.) 4. FEMINIST OWNER. The owner never talks down to me, as I have found many bike mechanics do--especially to female cyclists (he has never "mansplained" to me what a gear is). Hallelujah! 5. GOOD RENTAL FLEET. Instead of squirreling away their best bikes to sell and renting out only their most indestructible (read: clunkiest) touring bikes, Neptune Cycling will rent you newish, high-end racing bikes (if you want them--you can also get a more touring-type bike with upright bars with wider tires, if that's what you're into). To elaborate... During this visit, I kept one his rental bikes for 3 days and 2 nights. He charged me for 1 day.... for a $1500 Giant fancy new racing bike. When he repairs the bike I own, he never quotes/charges me more than my bike mechanics back home do--and I really hold their feet to the fire on what a chain costs because I am not rich--and it is remarkable that he does this because he lives in a vacation town where tourists like me can expect mark-ups. He's not there to rip you off. Probably because only two people are working there--only one of them full time. It's a super efficient, laid-back operation. Neptune Cyclery mercifully bucks the trend in bike shops that is sweeping the nation-- the "professionalization" of the bike shop. You get these young guys there--way too many of them, like 3 or 4 in one shift--and they're not owners, but underpaid and totally exploited mechanics--and they work full-time there. And although on the one hand I sympathize with their exploitation, they talk down to customers a lot (especially women :( I've found) and the turnover is super high--such that customers like me usually can't build a relationship with a mechanic once we find one we can trust. Like the rest of the world, bike shops have gone all corporate, for the worse. They upsell you everything--electric bikes, recliners, stuff you don't need. Repairs are outrageously expensive. So when Neptune Cyclery opens 5 minutes later or closes 5 minutes earlier than the sign says, and there's only two old dudes in there, and it's dimly lit, the big wooden doors are a little forbidding, and they never jump to offer me extra stuff to rent or buy, and the owner never wears a shirt, I THANK GOD there is still ONE BIKE SHOP LEFT in AMERICA that still has bike culture in it: it's laid back; the owner wants to talk to you about RIDING. That NEVER happens anymore! Man, I miss those days. The owner always seems like he either just came back from a ride, or can't wait to get back out there for one. That's the way it SHOULD be. His mechanic is part-time; the operation is efficient. Nobody wears matching tee-shirts with dumb logos on them. There are no signs spelling out menus of tune-up prices that are 20% higher than they should be. Neptune Cyclery is about the joy of riding. It's about comradery. It's not about selling you stuff. When I'm in Neptune Cyclery, I want to RIDE, and it gets me everything I need to do that. read more

I would have rated him lower , but there isn't anything lower than 1 star. I was riding the Pinellas Trail today and thought I would stop in and see if they could give me an idea on a faster bike that I could sit upright on as I had broken my back 45 years ago and can't bend forward. The owner Eddie was rude, indifferent, cocky and arrogant. He acted as if he were doing me a favor speaking with me. I explained that as much as I liked my Specialized comfory hybrid, I was losing too much power to the front fork, the weight and the tire size. Could he suggest something else. Eddie explained that buying a lighter bike, without a shock in front and thinner tires would not give me an increase in speed and unless I was ready to buy something I was wasting his time! I was in bike shorts and sneakers, obviously I wasn't going to buy something that minute, but being the only customer in the store, talking to me was the best shot head he had at a sale at that moment. Eddie then said I needed to leave as he owns the bar next door and had to move some beer and to please close the door behind me. A $6-700.00 sale and he was too busy and was asking me to leave. Folks don't waste your time dealing with such a rude crude piece of dookey. There are professional shops that will answer your questions, politely and don't see customers as people wasting their time! This is his response a few moments ago Subject: Your fat gut "Dude your gut is so big, lose some weight and you will go faster fatty! Stop wasting every shops time with questions that you know the answer to. You are so overweight and you are worried about a few pounds on a bike! Heed my Warning! DO NOT. I repeat DO NOT, do business with this clown. The owner is the worst owner that could ever have a business. His communication skill are sub par. He is a poor listener and treats you like he doesn't need your business anymore after you have made your purchase. I bought a used bike from this clown. The bike was nice but It needed a few mods no big deal. I had not used it hardly at all and brought it in to have the brake adjusted because it was studder stopping. He assured me that it would get fixed since I had recently bought the bike there not having anything to do with a tune up. I purposely clarified this with him prior to leaving my bike there. Now when you buy a bike from this guy he assures you that you will get a free tune up later on down the road regardless if the bike is new or used. Well my bike didn't need a tune up, it needed the brake fixed. Albeit a used bike, after spending over $350 for it, he assured me that the brake should be in working order. Well, when I went to get my bike, I assumed the the issue I brought it in for was fixed ergo the brake. Not the case. But I did get an un nessecery tune up. I found this out about a week later when I finally got to take my bike out and the brake was doing the same damn thing. It was never even fixed. Which brings me back to the "friendly, customer service oriented" Owner. I called him to tell him what happened. He cut me off, as he always does, I told him he needed to listen to me at this point. I proceeded and then he cuts me off again only this time dismissively tells me he has a store full of people and that I needed to get to the point. Of course I got mad at this point, and told him that I wanted to know that if I brought the bike in this time, would the brake actually get fixed this time. He then starts to yell at me and talk to me in a manner that ,in my opinion, was completely unprofessional and unexceptable. (Amazing how all of a sudden he has the time to tell me off. What happened to his store full of people?) I told him that I would be taking my business to Tarpon Tom's instead and he just continued to tell yell at me like he was the unhappy customer. To be fair at this point I was yelling back at him too. I couldn't believe this guy is still in business and had the nerve to speak to a buying customer this way! I'm going to Tarpon Tom's from now on and so should you who may be reading this review. How this guy is still in business after 20 plus years is beyond me. First, I am going to address the good and poor reviews. All you need to do is read these reviews b/c this guy has a Jekyll and Hyde attitude! I've used him for the last time after my recent visit. I had things as simple as my sons innertubes replaced to my wifes w/o any issues. However, I went to him to get some insight on my used road bike to learn maitenance needs, how to air up the tires (since I had never seen this style, it's been 20+ years when I was last on a bike) and a few other questions. He was absolutely rude from the get go by saying things like, "So you want me to waste my time showing you and you're not going to buy anything!" My replied was, "I would gladly pay him for his time" (since the bike was purchased from craigslist for $500)" I also stated the previous owner assured me the innertubes were fine, but he didn't air them up b/c he could not locate his pump since he just moved here. It was clear he was relocated from a job and living out of boxes from a couple days prior by looking at his garage and house. The owner (who I witnessed being rude to a customer another time I was there getting service done on my sons bike) replied the identical way, "I'm sure it needs innertubes, but you just want something for nothing!" I replied again, I would gladly pay him for his time and he said, "Why don't you buy a pump for $40 (I think) and I said, "The owner just moved here and has a pump he is including, but has it in a box somewhere in the garage." Then he mumbled some condescending comments to himself and said, "Here, (handed me a pump from behind the counter)...you can do it yourself!" I told him that I didn't know how to.....and he interupted me mid sentence by saying, "Just stick it on and pump!"??? We went back and forth a few more short sentences and I said, "Don't you turn the valve core or something first, then what...? He said, I don't have time if you are not going to buy anything!" Wow! Before that last comment, I was giving him the benefit of the doubt that he was having a bad morning (which he appeared to be sleeping and after me knocking on the door entrance 30 minutes after his start of business hours)....but I knew right then and there after his last comment about not having the time that I was done w/ him! I had gone to him over 10 years intermittently for misc items such as the aforementioned, seats, cables, rim, etc.... but I never bought a new bike from him b/c I wasn't into cycling, but my wife and son rode together and had bikes purchased during x-mas years prior and were still in fine working order. I guess I had spent maybe $300-$400 over my prior visits....which may not be much over the duration, but it's money spent at his small business. I don't understand how a businessman can stay in business for so long, but heard from another disgruntle patron that he was born w/ a silver spoon and was given $$$ the shop by his parents. I dont know if this is fact or fiction, but it does make sense w/ his attitude. He is truly Jekyll or Hyde.....you have been warned. I gladly found Tarpon Tom's Bikes on the corner of US Alt 19 and MLK (a stones throw from this potheads shop)! All you need to do is read his rebuttal to some of his review critism to see what class guy he is! Simple put, he's a miserable guy living a miserable and lonely life that was given everything he has! Most bike shops who have customers bikes for repairs don't leave out on the display horrible customer service straight up yelled at me for trying out a bike which wasn't even one he was selling but he had on the show floor like it was for sale. Was out riding the Pinellas Trail on a Sunday afternoon with a group of friends. As we are all from St Pete, it was our first time ever starting from the Tarpon Springs trail head and we were not familiar with any of the bike shops in that area. Six miles in, my back tire had a blow out. We called 5 different bike shops looking for someone who provided remote support on the trail. (Our local bike shop in St Pete has a sag vehicle that they send out to pick up stranded cyclists). The first five bike shops we called did not answer. The sixth call we made was to Neptune. The owner, Eddie, informed us he did not have his truck with him that day but he knew a guy about a block where we were on the trail who would do him a favor and bring us all in. We were able to get a ride to his shop by his friend, one of the sweetest souls ever and Eddie was so happy that he could help us get there. I don't know any other shop that would go out of there way to help out like that. And why was no other shop in the Tarpon area open on a Sunday? We were grateful to Eddie, he was very sweet and replaced both my worn out tires while we enjoyed drinks and appetizers. As soon as we left, my friend's tire went flat a mile down the trail. Eddie sent his worker out on his bike to check on us and to bring her bike in if we needed it. We were all able to walk back to his shop and he had us back on the trail in a matter of minutes. All in all, a great shop with a warm and welcoming crew. I would definitely go back!! read more
