My daughter, London, was only 12 years old when she was voluntarily hospitalized at Pine Rest. Like many families in crisis trying to protect their child, we trusted the medical professionals, policies, and systems involved in her care. During her treatment, Pine Rest prescribed Prozac to London. Our family does not believe Pine Rest fully informed us about the numerous serious risks associated with SSRIs in children and adolescents--most importantly, the FDA's black box warning of increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children. London's death occurred while she was still within the early weeks of SSRI exposure - a period widely recognized as requiring extremely close monitoring due to increased risks of behavioral changes and suicidality in some children and adolescents. She was a beautiful child - intelligent, compassionate, artistic, athletic, funny, deeply sensitive, and endlessly loved. Our family now lives with unimaginable grief. To be clear, London did not die inside the facility. However, our family believes there were serious failures by Pine Rest which contributed to the loss of my daughter. In response to this tragedy, I began working on London's Law - proposed legislation focused on full informed consent, accountability, and other important protections for children and families involved with the mental health system. Because I am a yoga instructor, I felt like I already had a reasonable grasp of meditation, but I participated fully and with an open mind to see what it was like. The deeper understanding of stress and how to relate to it differently has been life-changing. The simply but effective practices are something that I can rely on in the midst of even very stressful life situations, and the quality of my life and my relationships has improved significantly thanks to what I learned. I have also taken the Self-Compassion for Beginners workshop and the Building Mindful Connection course, and I can't wait to take another class!

I attended once a week, going to both April and Carol's evening class as my schedule changed often. Both April and carol were wonderful, patient teachers of the class, helping a meditation novice like myself, grow and develop in practice. The MBSR curriculum itself is challenging yet stimulating and I can say that I've changed for the better from the homework and lessons. I feel like I do live more in the present with less anxiety, increased creativity, calmer disposition, and greater awareness of my emotions and thoughts. I would recommend a MBSR class from either Carol or April to anyone. Grand Rapids Mindfulness Center also brings in various authors and speakers on the topic of mindfulness and meditation in addition to yoga and meditation sessions for those already practicing. They are based out of Expressions of Grace Yoga Studio on Northland Drive Grand Rapids but they offer the MBSR courses throughout the city. .

I can't recommend Kara highly enough!…read more Almost on a whim, I contacted Kara because a friend of a friend recommended her. I was curious about the services she offered and how they might enhance my generally-going-great life. I admit that some of the techniques and methodologies she described to me felt a little "out there," but I decided to set aside my skepticism to see where the journey led me. Did I understand when she explained frequencies or energy work? No, but she has the right combination of professionalism and warm personality to make me trust her. During the energy work, my eyes were covered as music played in the background. Although I don't know exactly or completely understand what Kara was doing, I know it affected me. Once I felt a weight on my chest. Another time my hands buzzed and ached. Sometimes my feet tingled. It's difficult to describe exactly what was happening, but afterwards I always felt both relaxed and refreshed. We spent a couple of sessions prepping me--emotionally and physically--for an immersive experience that was spiritual for me. Even more important, we spent several sessions after that integrating and examining the experience. I was surprised what I learned about myself during the entire process, and what I learned that I needed to do to continue to improve my "generally-going-great" life. Kara is insightful, thoughtful, patient, and kind. She guided this 69-year-old to try something new and enriching, and for that, I'm extremely grateful.
