I just had the most amazing pedicure by Lindsey! I did the stress relief gel pedicure. The pedicure area is quiet and tucked away from everything. Lindsey suggested a beautiful color of polish I would never have tried and I loved it. She is also very talented with nail art. I will be going back.

"Spiral Perm" from New Beginning Salon and Spa Beaverton :-(
    Renee B.

I wanted a spiral perm for my naturally gray, mid-back length hair. I had a consult with Desiree a month before, and we decided on a loose spiral. I got the 'spiral' August 6th. It turned out kind of beachy-wave looking, but I was told perms weren't what they were like in the 80's, and figured the curl would show after I'd washed it in 2 days' time Well, I ended up with slightly wavy hair, with straight pieces here and there. I made a consult appointment for August 13th, one week later, to see what they could do to fix it. Desiree sat me in a chair and some other lady, possibly a manager, stood there at her station, leading me to think they have created a protocol for unhappy customers, due to this happening so often! I told them I had asked for a 'spiral.' Desiree said I had asked for a 'body wave.' LIE! Those words NEVER came out of my mouth. The 'manager' lady asked Desiree what type of perm she gave me, and Desiree replied "A creative perm." What the heck is that? Do a Google search; it doesn't exist. She also started twisted strands of my hair and proceeded to tell me that "you can't just let a perm go, you have to twist it to get a spiral." I answered "But what about those other people with spiral waves?" She said those people didn't have perms. I had long straight maintenance-free hair. I wanted a spiral perm so I could wash, scrunch and go. No, Desiree said - you have to style a perm. This is the first I've heard that! She showed me how I should take little 1/2 inch pieces of my hair a twist each one with 'product 'on it, and instructed me that you had to do this with a spiral perm, otherwise you'd have a frizzy mess. I sure wish she'd told me that when we had out initial consultation, as then I would NOT have gone ahead with a perm! She didn't mention that when she gave me the perm, she was more focused on trying to get me to buy 'product' after she finished. I asked for a refund. "We don't give refunds" She charged me $156 and I tipped her (like an idiot) $34, so $190 is what I paid to log as many bad reviews and warnings about this place as I can. I'm shocked, because I've been going to the Murrayhill and Hawthorne Dosha Aveda salons and now think they must not be affiliated, as those salons do thoroughly amazing, professional work.

    More dye on the neck.

I started going back here after the pandemic because they sent me a spam email. I called them, explaining that I stopped going to them because the unskilled person they last put me with did not fully color my roots. (I had to go back then and they re-did it for free because they could easily see it was poorly done.) The owner explained to me that the person who did my hair was gone, and that they knew she was not a skilled hairstylist. I agreed to return on the condition they put me with someone very experienced with color. They put me with Marissa (OK) and then Alexis, who did a fairly good job. A week before my last appointment in July, they called me to tell me Alexis was not available the day of my appointment and rescheduled me for the following week. They did not tell me Alexis had quit until I arrived for my appointment. (Nice.) They put me with Jordan, who stated she didn't know how to do my color (this should have been my first clue this was not going to turn out well.) I told her that she SHOULD be able to, as the hairstylists write down their client's formula typically. She then offered to "pull it through" and said it would look good. I am not a hairdresser, and told her that this was good as long as it looked the same color. I had to tell her when she was washing my hair to completely wash the back of my head, because it was clear she was not getting everything. When she finished and turned me around to look at my hair, I was shocked. When I walked into the salon, I had a warm medium brown with highlights, and now it was BLACK! I was not happy, and told her this was not what I expected. She proceeded to tell me my hair was porous and in her exact words said, "I'm sure you will grow to love it." I went up to the counter and changed my next appointment to someone else (anyone else.) Fuming, I went home and showed my husband, who was shocked. He took pictures of all the dye still left on my hairline and on my neck. I immediately called the salon because I knew this was not just me overreacting, and asked to speak with the manager. The salon had just closed, and the person who answered the phone said she would have Shari call me back. I explained how unhappy I was with this service, and that I wanted to have my hair put back to the same color it was. Shari called me back the next morning, and said she could get me in Sunday to fix my hair with a color detoxification. I expected this would repair my hair to the correct color. When I got there, Shari and another woman looked at my hair, and proceeded to tell me that I really should have understood what Jordan meant by "pulling through" and that because my hair was porous it came out darker than what it originally was. I explained that I am not a hairdresser, and that I am more than happy to pay for a service, but that I expect to get what I pay for, and that I could have done a better job with a box from Fred Meyer. They did not disagree, but said they did not have time to do anything then but detoxify my hair to bring it down a step in color. (Why didn't they tell me this when I spoke with Shari on the phone?) The person who "detoxified" my hair simply washed it twice with a shampoo that barely took out any color. Shari and the person who washed my hair stood there and proceeded to tell me how much better it looked as the shampoo took it "down a half step." I did not agree. She half dried my hair (she didn't have time to fully dry it, she said), and Shari told me that next time I came in they would fix it and put in highlights. A few days later I called New Beginnings because I realized I was not going to be able to make my next appointment because I was out of town. The receptionist I spoke with forwarded me to Katie. As I tried to explain calmly to Katie that I needed to reschedule to have my hair color correction back to the original color, she continuously interrupted me and proceeded to gaslight me, telling me that I was interrupting her, that she was going to hang up on me, and that "she was going to tell me what she was going to do for me." (What the heck does that mean? I'm the customer.) She told me they did not intend to correct the color, just add some highlights (to the mess they created) and she would call me back later when she could "calmly speak to me" and hung up. She was incredibly rude and condescending. She called me back an hour later and told me that she didn't like how I acted with her people (i.e. I was not satisfied with the service I received) and that she felt it was just best that we "cut our ties." She said she would refund $170 of the $246 I paid and remove my credit card from her file. I told her this was fine with me. This place is always dead, with hardly any people in the salon, and there is a good reason for it...the word is out of their unskilled employees and bad business practices. I have now found a new stylist, who is much more professional and knows her stuff.

I have been going to New Beginnings for 10years+/- and have been pleased with the service provided. Stylists come and go, appts may need to be moved, someone gets sick. It's the way things go and New Beginnings has always been accommodating and flexible to meets my needs and have been upfront to let me know about any changes. My current stylist A. is kind and does a great job and M. at the front desk is awesome. I love the "extras" the AVEDA experience provides.

Gayla did a great job on my poor neglected feet.

I emailed a week ago to schedule an appointment for my daughter as a surprise hair spa day, since I was visiting from out of town. Mikian was terrific, gave me a list of services, prices and tried to get me the morning appointment on Saturday. He told me 11, and I'd already told my daughter the time, before he emailed back to say it was gone. He moved her to 12:30 and I booked mani and pedi for us both to fill the time. I have to say that Gayla and Sofi were terrific. The most enjoyable mani pedi I have ever had. I wish I'd taken a before shot, to show how nice ajob she did on my poor neglected feet. Jessica did a very nice job on my daughter's belt length hair trim and blow out. We were very happy with our girl day and the services we received. I will definitely be back, next time I fly in from Los Angeles for a visit.

I love Hollywood glam and she made it (Alaina ) happen!!

I was recommended by my twin sister. I had been reluctant to go try a new stylist but my sister Insisted and booked me an apt. Alaina, I wish you had done my wedding hair!! You did an amazing job and I felt so glamorous. You have an amazing personality and did an amazing job!!

This is the only salon I've been to in the Portland area since I moved here... I've been a client for about 2 years. My usual stylist had left so I saw Alexis for the first time today. She did AMAZING!! Asked all the right questions and we connected wonderfully. I have long thick hair and got a cut and full highlight - exceptional job. I took a few photos in and we worked toward one; she said she wished a color popped better but I honeslty really love what she did. Kuddos for intuition, babe! See you next time!

My skin has been pretty damaged by the sun since I never wore sunscreen growing up so I wanted to try to reverse some of the damage. Let me tell you Manal is the best. She takes great care of me every time I visit. I give her updates on my skincare routine and she makes adjustments to my treatment based off of that. She also gives great advice as well on how I can improve on my routine. I always leave feeling refreshed and my face glowing. I have noticed a big difference with how much is with the monthly visits. After treatments she'll get me some coconut water to hydrate which is a nice bonus. A tip is to get their membership if you plan on getting treatments more regularly since you get a special members price and can get points for visits which you can redeem for a free service. I've been to a couple different Elements Massage (Lake Oswego, Tanasbourne) for MEDICAL MASSAGE,…read morewith focus on both legs and feet for lower peripheral neuropathy along with some lower back pain and muscle tension and cramping issues from a laminectomy at L3 as well. Out of every treatment option under the sun, massage therapy is the most useful. No drugs, PT or surgery even come close toward relief and recovery after over six years of dealing with my conditions. Sadly most insurance doesn't cover massage or has very limited visits per year so it gets expensive fast, even though my doctors would prescribe it perpetually for the medical benefits if I requested it. My latest visit at Tanasbourne in late April of 2024 was 90 minutes with Kat, she did a fantastic job, dug in deep with hard pressure as I prefer, light massage does nothing for severe neuropathy and preventing debilitating muscle cramping. Deep tissue is the way to go, on scale of 4-5 with 5 being hard pressure pain in a good way, she put in a solid 3-4. PROS: - Have always had great DEEP TISSUE massages every visit by a man or woman, therapists have been well qualified. - Every visit the massage therapist listened and focused on the areas requested (after years of severe neuropathy I know where to focus). - ALWAYS feel better after a deep, and sometimes painful massage, the kind where it hurts so good. - All professional, no feeling of being uncomfortable or pressured to tip. - Clean and modern facilities. - Mellow typical massage music. - Tables that raise and lower and are heated. - Can usually accommodate a quick same day schedule. - Most locations are easily accessible and disabled friendly. CONS: - No direct billing to insurance (some locations used to do this, but stopped), but can provide you with an invoice. - Does not provide a hot moist towel at end like many places do to wipe off any lingering lotion or oil, even though they have them and sometimes use them during your massage. Even less fancy places provide a dry towel. Nothing here, I guess you could use the massage table sheets. - Massage oil or lotion had a slight scent, nothing unpleasant or too strong, but noticeable. - Encourages tipping, even for medical massage (which shouldn't be required). ... While I don't mind tipping a little for Medical Massage, it is often deemed as necessary by medical professionals, just like Physical Therapy. Some massage therapist charge a higher rate for 'Medical Massage' and therefore make note that gratuity is not necessary as it's basically included in the rate. The benefits towards positive health with massage is far greater than the world, insurance or science might document, sort of like chiropractors, even though many insurance are starting to accept them now as legitimate practice. I mean, we don't tip chiropractors, PT, primary care doctors or surgeons?!? Some chiropractors have onsite massage, but my luck with finding a good deep tissue massage therapist through a chiropractor has yet to happen, probably because it's a lot of work and requires a lot of strength and stamina to dig in deep. Solution -- establishments need to pay their massage therapist a far better base rate, then tipping wouldn't be even be a question. My guess is that most chiropractors and massage studios don't pay their therapist a higher rate for 'Medical Massage' grade therapy, when they should ... The industry needs to change their mindset. SUMMARY: Elements seems to hire qualified massage therapists, no complaints there. Rates are on the higher side. Biggest downside is on the corporation as a whole being too lazy and cheap to bill insurance directly and not paying extra to their therapist for Medical Massage, and of course no towels for cleaning yourself up before exiting.
