One of the biggest surprises was the sweet and sour pork, which ended up being one of my favorite dishes of the meal. I usually load up on carbs, but this visit was all about the protein and there was no shortage of options. The...

portion sizes are absolutely massive, which always wins me over. They have just about every organ meat you could ask for, and I liked that all the sides and meats are displayed clearly if you want to order by the pound instead of from the menu. Service was fast and friendly. Now I just need to recruit a bigger group so we can come back, order family style, and work our way through more of the menu.

We ordered their liang pi, shanxi noodle soup, noodle with eggplant and pork, chinese burger, and salt and pepper fish filet. We also got a 3 item appetizer plate from their hot bar area ($9.99 for 3 items). Their liang pi was the...

noodles. It was super oily though, the type of dish where excess oil pools at the bottom of the bowl. The chinese burger was okay. It was super crispy, but the meat could've been more flavorful, and it was also very oily. At one point, I took a bite and oil literally squirted out onto my hands and plate. The salt and pepper fish fillets were good. Great flavor, crispy, and generously portioned. The only downside was they got soggy quickly. Service was very prompt and friendly. Our waiter also helped us box up our leftovers. Will come back to try more of their menu!

A cute and clean space serving up classic Northern Chinese cuisine. I took two people along with me and this place's portions are perfect to share between 3-4 if you want to try a taste of everything. I heard you get free appetizers but they don't seem to be doing that anymore (?) They are however, available for purchase separately at the counter, along with frozen dumplings and baos in their commercial fridges. Rundown of food: Cold Skin Noodle 5/5: Excellent sauce to noodle ratio. Sesame and peanut notes with crunchy veg. The textures are so interesting. Make sure to finish it at the restaurant, it's not good at home or reheated. Peking style noodle w/ brown sauce. 1/5: this is basically Zhajangmian. I wanted to like this one but the sauce was literally all clear oil and flavorless. None of that brown sauce goodness even though it's in the name. Meat was ok, but just too oily overall. Noodle texture was the only positive.

Shanxi Pork Noodle Soup 4.5/5: Same noodle used as Black bean noodle. Broth is rich and hearty, pork was tender. I would've liked it spicier but it's perfect for those who can only take mild! Braised Beef Tendon: 3/5 I didn't order...

this for me but it was alright. It's quite chewy but fun. Yay collagen. Chinese Hamburger 5/5: The highlight!! Absolutely get this. It's a flaky pita, and tastes homemade. Eat it hot! If I come back again, I would try the fried intestine and house special sweet and sour pork! If you come here not knowing what to order, just get the items and that are on the wall (aside from Zhajangmian...) Those are probably the chefs highlights. Service was attentive, but they do run fast as customers do pile up for lunch. Good thing you can add your name to their online waiting list.

Located on a busy thoroughfare in Millbrae, this restaurant has a group of loyal customers. Street parking may be difficult but usually you should find some open space across the street. Unlike your typical Chinese Restaurant, this place specializes in Northern China style cuisine, so some of the dining experience may feel reversed. For example, they have a mince noodle that is served cold, but a Tofu Skin that is served hot. The English description are a bit off and they have a variety of frozen buns and other food you can buy to-go (they don't serve the buns at the restaurant). For the less adventurous, their spicy tofu, Crispy Sweet and Sour Chicken (breaded and fried crispy) and a dry noodle are good starting point, and for vegetables, their stir fry green beans is good (but best served with some rice). Overall, this place is not bad, but wish their menu was more accurate in the description/content to meet customer's expectations.

Came to New China Restaurant after happening upon it via DoorDash. That time, we ordered the burger and the liang pi and both were seriously good so it had to be better in person right? Walking in, there is a tablet to join a waitlist system. There's also a small bench that could fit 3 but it's probably still more comfortable to stand outside to wait. Despite having a queue, we were sat in about 10 min, not bad! Looking over the menu we knew we wanted the burger again and ironically the staff also pushed us to the liang pi but we wanted to try some other things too. We ended up ordering the thin tofu sheets with green peppers which was really tasty in my opinion! Not as heavy as noodles but similar concept. The spice was also present but not overboard. For $9.99, we also added the small apps plate where you can choose from the deli. Our favorite was the marinated cucumbers and woodear, followed by the pig ears, and then the shredded potatoes. Overall, the food is top notch here and I think you certainly owe it a try if you haven't already. In fact, you've probably already driven past it many times and not noticed - so stop by next time!

Came here with some friends after a walk. Ordered the special noodle with sauce, the ja jeung mein and the eggplant and potatoes. I really liked the special noodle dish which was vegan cuz the noodles were made out of bean. Maybe mung bean? My friend did not know. But it tasted very refreshing after the long walk on the sawyer camp trail. It's a cold dish. The eggplant potato dish had good texture but it also lacked flavor and only some of the eggplant and potatoes were crisp otherwise they were a bit soggy. The ja jeung mein didn't have a black bean sauce base so it really did seem more like a dan dan mien even though they said it wasn't. The wait staff was friendly and the place didn't have a hole in the wall vibe. Just a tiny little restaurant. They also offer some buns that are frozen that you can buy to make at home but those items are not on the menu so you can't test them out to see how they taste. Overall the food was pleasant but lacked flavor. I think I'd come back for that noodle dish but if I can find it somewhere else I might not.

Was craving their meat hamburger and I'm here. Came with my sister so it was just the two of us therefore we cannot order too much. We ordered their two item cold dish appetizer- pig ear and shredded potato, meat hamburger and their meat and eggplant noodle. I noticed the meat hamburger was different from before. It was less flaky and juicy but it was not as oily as before which was good. The meat and eggplant noodle was good but lacking a little taste but overall it was still yummy. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place is clean and tables are not cramped together.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The servers were friendly and tentative. Parking is not hard since there are plenty of street parking. Will definitely come back for more yummy dishes.

We had initially ordered just the first 3 because that's what my fellow Yelpers recommended but the waitress told us we didn't have enough food and to add the pork bones. They weren't necessary and were my least favorite dish, they gave us more than we needed, and because they were by weight, they ended up being $35 for the plate. I'll be back again with friends for the sweet and sour pork and the Chinese burgers for sure!

My son has been raving about the Sweet & Sour Fish at the restaurant. So we went there while we were visiting him and his fiancé. The fish were nicely fried, crunchy, coated with the traditional Chinese restaurant sweet and sour source. I thought if the fish were in smaller pieces, it would be better. We also order a few other dishes and they were decent. We ordered the beef tendon and they gave us like 2 lbs of them. Came to find out that it was charged by the pound. They should have asked us how much do we want. That said, at the end of the day, every thing was good and we would go back.

Excellent, authentic food, big portions, good prices - it doesn't get much better than this. Highlights: Cold mung bean noodles (大拉皮) - excellent, sesame based sauce, love all the veggies. This place is a go-to for me and my friends. Authentic Chinese food that is worth the price :) The crispy pork is a must order. It comes piping hot and so juicy with a crisp skin. We devoured it in seconds. The mung bean noodles were quite yummy as well. It comes cold and is very slippery / tough to pick up. The noodles are translucent and comes with a sesame/peanutish sauce and sliced cucumber. The soups were all so good, very different flavors but the sour soup was better than the tomato soup (that one needs nice to come with as it's a little thicker). Green beans are also a classic, as well as the meat pancakes

Ordered the Salt & Pepper Chicken here and felt completely ripped off. The menu photo shows plump, meaty chicken wings... what I actually got was a box full of broken joints, bony scraps, and odds and ends that looked like leftovers no one else wanted. For $17, this was insulting. It wasn't a real dish -- it felt like the kitchen scraped together whatever parts they couldn't use elsewhere and called it "Salt & Pepper Chicken." Absolutely nothing like the advertised picture. Flavor alone doesn't make up for being served a tray of bones disguised as a main dish. If you value honesty and quality, look elsewhere.

We came here the day after Thanksgiving for dinner. There's a few tables available to sit down to order and eat like a regular restaurant, and you can order takeout from the deli looking area further inside. They also sell frozen dumplings that I didn't try but it looked promising. It is a very casual spot with really amazing food, especially if you like it spicy! As a party of 8, we ordered a lot of food, maybe too much. Setchuan peanuts 10/10, spicy pig ears 10/10 could eat the whole plate, salt & pepper pork (7/10 lots of breading but good flavor), green beans (10/10 classic dish), beef tendon (10/10 if you like tendon would recommend), Chinese burger (10/10 unique, would recommend- also very filling), stir fry beef (10/10), pickled cabbage soup with pork (kind of sourish like sour kraut but surprisingly very tasty even though I'm not that into sour kraut). Tea isnt anything special, they just throw a tea bag into a pot with hot water. It's not loose leaf but it does match the vibe of this casual restaurant. The service is pretty good for a casual Chinese spot and the food comes quickly. I will definitely be recommending to my friends and family to come back here

I was stuck overnight at SFO. Found a local hotel on Camino de Royale. Looked on Yelp for a restaurant...diagonally across the street was "New China Restaurant". What a golden gift. My wife & I were the only anglos. The menus was in Chinese. The silverware was stone chop sticks. The waiters English was limited. The beverage of choice was tea. The food was excellent, the atmosphere authentically China/America/California/2022, the atmosphere was calm, friendly,family. What a delight. No hype, no drama. I have never been to China, so I can't judge if this is great by China standards but since there was a line outside when we left I know folks from China agree with me....this is good food. read more

Very good for ethnic northern Chinese dishes. You get a bit more traditional varieties. The tofu noodle is our favorite. There is also a minimmarket of sort that you can look through. Service was great although their English is very poor so be patient. read more

First time in San Francisco in a while, there was lots of space and privacy and there was a very short wait time. The food was amazing. Lastly the service was truly outstanding. The waiter was very funny and helped make the whole experience enjoyable. Would recommend! read more

Passed by it and noticed sweet honey was replaced with New China so stopped by to check it out. We order honey walnut prawn, black pepper beef and green beans. Everything taste great and the chef knows what he's doing. They also have freezer for dumplings, soy products and buns. Also a counter for quick to go. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They definitely proud of their food and won't hesitate to recommend food for you to try. I do feel they are doing too much and the selection can be overwhelming but the food is legit. read more

This restaurant reminds me of something I'd find in Tokyo...photos on the wall of signature dishes, clean/modern decor and very unassuming but friendly, welcoming and tasty. The stars of our evening were the salt n pepper pork chops, honey walnut prawns and braised beef tendon/brisket. The dry beef chow fun needed more time on the wok to carmelize and char the noodles. Having eaten these four basic go to dishes in 6 states and 3 countries I'd rate them a solid 4/5 stars. David is very welcoming and a hard worker I can really appreciate and want to support much more in the future. Congrats on your Grand Opening and hope everyone wanting good authentic Chinese home style dishes will give New China a try. Visited this establishment for the first time, The Service was good and the food is above average. But sitting area is very small, might be 10 to 12 tables. There is a take out and frozen food areas. Food just ok. Nothing special. Vegetables were cold, soup was awful.The chicken with mushroom was very good. TheMongolian beef was ok, a little fatty and not enough sauce. The interior is gorgeous and well done. They have a steam counter in the back so not everything is freshly cooked. No English spoken. Even if you eat there you get your dinner in a styrafoam container. Good value for the money but I will probably not be back. wish Mi Tequila was still there. read more

The food was good and the service was OK. But I didn't understand the order of serving dishes in their kitchen. We were the second table guests in this restaurant, and ordered two bowls of noodles. We waited for about 40 minutes before serving. I reluctantly accepted the waiting time, but I couldn't accept why the guests later than us had all their dishes, including the main course. Not only one table guests, but at least three tables guests got their dishes and we didn't. read more

My wife and I dropped my New China yesterday. We ordered a 3 item combination with chow mein . The portions were very generous and tasted "home-made" (came with soup) . My wife also selected many items (dumplings, won tons, Joong) from the fully stocked freezer section and everything we tried was also good. We will definitely be back. Parking was very easy on Park Street. There were also tables for dining if that was your pleasure. Sorry no photos, maybe later. read more

My Pingpong friend said this place is not so bad and we decided to try it after our weekly Pingpong game. We ordered noodles and one fried rice and of course the one "must have" item according to my friend and the comments from Yelp--the Chinese burger. I had the Tomato Egg noodle and it's surprisingly good. The Chinese burger is no double deserve the outstanding review it has received. I was not disappointed and I ordered another to take out. The place was very busy and it's obvious that they need additional help with only two persons doing everything, that apparently affected the quality of service. The place is quite small and therefore it's a bit tight. There are other dishes that seems pretty good and I'll definitely go again for dinner so I can try them. I also bought a few items from the cold dish section as well as the freezer. I haven't tried those yet and will update later. read more

Ordered takeout and the food was delicious and the service is amazing! The owner was so nice , we got to talk about food and he ended up making me a special order of wontons and steamed buns! It's always hard to tell whether a restaurant with all 5 stars so far (but relatively new) will sustain its ratings, but I think this one will. We got the house pork which was one of those dishes that you couldn't stop shovelling into your mouth. The Shanghainese rice cake and string beans were fine, but the pork really shone. Portions were huge too. read more

But now because their business is booming, they don't really care about customer service. Very rude waiter, and the owner is making ridiculous excuses for 2 togo boxes. Last week, I made a togo order for more than $80, and they refused to give me 2 more togo boxes, even I wanted to pay for the box, the owner said NO, and he asked me with an attitude: "do you still want to order or not?" Along with a slate of appetizers, they also have congee, noodle soups, chow fun/chow mein, fried rice, rice plates, noodle soups, and specialty entrees, including hainan chicken, which seems to be their most popular dish. In addition, they also have some Chinese BBQ options, like Char Siu and Roast Duck, but, tragically, we didn't see roast pork listed. -- ROAST DUCK (QUARTER) I was cautiously optimistic for this one and, thankfully, it turned out great. The pieces we got were rather meaty and the skin on this was really flavorful and neither too soft nor dried out. -- HOUSE SPECIAL HAINAN CHICKEN (QUARTER) Not as amazing as we had hoped for, but still pretty solid. The pieces we got were a bit lean and the skin wasn't the greatest, but the chicken itself was cooked well and I liked the peanuts that this came with. -- SALT & PEPPER FISH FILET Although this wasn't as good as others I've had, this wasn't bad. On the plus side, the batter was crispy, the fish was moist, and there was a fair amount of garlic and peppers. On the other, the inside of the batter was really gummy. -- THREE COMBO MEAT STIR-FRIED RICE NOODLES Sadly, I just wasn't a fan of this at all. Although this had a decent mix of stuff in it, the noodles themselves were torn apart, overcooked, and just kind of tasteless. Pass. -- BEEF CHOW FUN Pretty standard, but still pretty good! The noodles had a nice bite to them and, surprisingly, the slices of beef weren't as tough as I feared they would be. Plus, the dish wasn't very oily either. -- DRY FRIED STRING BEANS WITH MINCED MEAT Nothing special, but still pretty solid. The string beans were cooked well and they didn't skimp on the meat. However, I wish they had used some XO sauce in this to add a stronger punch of flavors. -- BEEF BRISKET & TURNIP RICE PLATE Along with the Roast Duck, this was my other favorite dish here. The brisket was super tender and I really liked how the sauce had a nice beefiness and richness to it. -- BRAISED FISH FILET WITH TOFU & BLACK MUSHROOMS This didn't look all that impressive, but it was actually pretty good. The tofu and mushrooms were both great, but, like the salt & pepper fish, the batter felt a little gummy. -- TOMATO BEEF PAN FRIED NOODLES I didn't eat much of this one, so I can't say much about it. However, based on what I had, this was fine. The noodles were crispy, the portion was decent, and the beef wasn't chewy. -- SOY SAUCE CHOW MEIN For better or worse, this was kind of generic. There wasn't anything about this that stood out, but at least the noodles weren't overcooked nor was it salty/heavy on soy sauce. -- POTSTICKERS Ehh...this was fine. The filling wasn't too shabby and I liked how soft the skins were. However, I wish these had a harder and deeper crust on the bottom to give it that crunch. -- PORK & SHRIMP WONTON NOODLE SOUP Honestly, this had the potential to be so much better. Despite how this came with a fair amount of wontons that were all pretty plump, the broth was surprisingly bland and diluted. Beyond the food, service here is unremarkable, but not necessarily in a negative sense. Rather, there's nothing amazing about it, but all of the workers are still friendly enough and efficient while the kitchen gets orders out relatively quick, which is all you can really ask for. All in all, while a couple of our dishes were definitely pretty tasty, just as many underwhelmed while the rest were just okay. Combine that with how there usually isn't a line and how parking is super easy (they have a small lot, too) and Garden Kitchen is still a terrific option for a quick and convenient meal. Though, one that isn't quite as tasty as Fat Wong's used to be. THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded down.

It seems like the rice had too much water added, so it was a bit overcooked - you couldn't feel the "single grain" mouthfeel texture you should expect from well-cooked, high quality rice. Since the rice was too mushy, it obviously didn't crisp well either. Though it had some small amount of bits stuck to the edges of the metal (not clay!) pot, it was definitely not the super crispy, well browned "faan ziu" I expect, and not at all like the pictures featured in some earlier reviews of this restaurant.

But right before we left, my husband looked up the hours and said, "Wait... it's called Taste of Four Seasons now?" Uh, what? Did Earl Spicy close? Yelp still showed it alive and well, so we decided to go check it out anyway. My heart was already committed. We got there around 7 PM on a Friday. A few tables were filled -- seemed like a good sign. Plenty of servers, but no sign of the old owner. I started feeling a little nervous. We looked through the menu... no spicy grilled fish. Cue quiet panic. I pulled out my phone and showed the server a picture from our last visit. She said they still have it -- it's just made differently now and it's really good. Also, they now use a fresh fish called 多寶魚 instead of the frozen fish Earl Spicy used. Now, my husband and I thought we had decent Chinese, but we had no idea what 多寶魚 was. We stared at the tank she pointed to, still clueless. And honestly, if Earl Spicy really used frozen fish, they fooled us -- it never tasted frozen. I asked how much it was, since it wasn't on the menu. She said $42 per pound, usually around 1.5 pounds. I figured maybe $65-70. More than Earl Spicy's $48 XL version, but hey -- I am here for it. We ordered a few other dishes too. First came the "New Style Sweet and Sour Pork & Shrimp." The menu said pork and chicken, but the server said it was a typo -- it's actually pork cheek and shrimp. It ended up being the best dish of the night. The shrimp was excellent, 5/5. The pork cheek was good too, just a little fatty -- maybe 4/5 for me. My husband wanted Szechuan pepper chicken. The server said the kitchen could make it, even though only a tea-flavored version was listed. What we got was stir-fried chicken with jalapeños. Not deep-fried, not spicy, just... dry. It didn't really land. My son's friend loves fried rice, so we got the $19.95 special fried rice. It came out shaped like a fish -- super cute. First bite though? "Why is this so hard and dry?" the kids asked. I tried it -- yup, same. Crunchy in a weird way, like it had been sitting on the heat too long. I asked the server, and she apologized and had the kitchen remake it. The second version was slightly better, but still dry. Maybe that's just how they do it. Next came the salted fish eggplant casserole. It was only $9.85, but no one really touched it. Just not great. And finally, the main event: the fish I'd been dreaming about. It arrived in the same tray as before, but no tea light underneath. Not a big deal. They'd added a mountain of flat noodles (河粉) underneath, but the fish itself? Dry. Bland. Not the spicy grilled fish I remembered. The sauce was thin, almost like gravy, and the noodles were just soaked sadly in it. A friendly lady (maybe the new owner?) came by and explained that the restaurant now serves southern Chinese-style food, which is different from Earl Spicy's. I smiled politely, but inside I was crying, Why didn't you say that before we ordered? She brought out complimentary glass jelly for dessert -- nice touch. I liked it, but the kids thought it was too bitter. Then came the bill. The fish? $111.77. I did a double take. How was that 2.6 pounds?! I thought about asking, but my husband gave me the look: "Let's just go." So we paid. With tax and tip, the total came out to nearly $240. Final verdict: RIP Earl Spicy. You were loved. You are missed. As for Taste of Four Seasons? Once was enough.

Their standard level is not very spicy even though it comes with a ton of red peppers so if you like it hot, then don't hesitate to let them know. I appreciate that they don't heavily batter their fish. Our dishes arrived surprisingly quickly, almost too quickly and I felt the dishes could've been hotter so I'm not sure if they were already premade and just kept on a warmer or what. All in all the meal was satisfying and Earl Spicy would probably hit the mark for a lot of people.
