Yan Peninsula is a large Chinese restaurant well known for both banquet style dinner and bustling dim sum. With the crowd, the noise decibel level is high. Decor is contemporary Chinese with high ceilings and large TV screens. Yan is very popular so expect their small parking lot to be full and difficulty finding street spaces, especially on weekends. Instead of dim sum carts, the table places orders on paper, marking the quantities of selected dim sum. Despite the capacity crowd, food came quickly. While every dim sum was delicious based on our 9-person table consumption that had almost no take-home boxes, the Chicken Feet was my favorite, with extra large claws and unique, delicious marinade sauce (I don't recall this with chicken feet elsewhere). Unlike most Chinese restaurants, the service staff were surprisingly cordial. While very busy, they still managed to be quick and smile. Waitresses were accommodating and helped us take group photos as we celebrated Dad's 94th birthday with three tables of 25 people. My family comes here quite often and the service is usually good. Tonight was a terrible experience. We ordered six dishes and two dishes ran out, with one never being communicated to us that they were out until the end of the meal. Food came out incredibly slow and the portions seemed smaller than our other dinner visits. All the while the owner is having servers rush to her table next to us with seafood and alcohol. The experience felt slow and terrible. It's almost excusable if it was busy, but it was not. Even with less people in the restaurant, the service remained slow for us. To wrap it all up, we decided to pay in the front due to slower service and was met with attitude and being questioned about the legitimacy of our receipt to pay. ??? The only good thing I would say is that the food tasted great, but pairing it with how slow the food came out and the negative attitude we met, I would not recommend nor patron this place again. Sunday lunch is a jungle. The lot is completely full. Cars and illegally parked blocking the handicap spot. We were a party of 6. We stopped in for dim sum. I did notice the head lady yelling at one of the bus staff, very unprofessional. To order there's a picture menu at the table. You mark down how any of what you want and then they come by and pick up the menu. Food is then brought to the table. Actually surprised by the speed of service event hough there is a large volume of large tables (6+ tops). One of the tea cups at the table had a crack causing leakage. Overall the food was pretty good. The only thing that was a little off was the Giant Surf Clam pan fried rice noodles with yellow chives... the dish was lacking seasoning. The Cantonese style food is delicious and the portions are great. The interior is nicely decorated, love their elaborate ceiling decorations. They also have a very large screen at the front of the restaurant, soccer game on the night we went, not sure what they usually have onscreen. Service is very friendly and pleasant but it took awhile to order and for our food to come. Included appetizers: boiled peanuts and pickled veggies. Both are delicious, note if someone has a peanut allergy. Beef with Longan - my favorite, it had a sweet and sour sauce, the beef is very tender, and I loved the longan in the stir fry! It was hard to see Zen Peninsula decline over the years. Happy to see Yan Peninsula bring back the quality. They have all the classic dishes. Surprise standout was the sweet and sour pork. This NOT the Americanized stuff you get in middle-of-nowhere USA. This is the real deal. Perfectly fried. Not too much batter and not too sweet. I wish they wouldn't use the smelly industrial cleaner on the tables. That stuff is for floors and bathrooms, not surfaces near food. The smell detracts from the food. When you walk in and see live seafood tanks, you already know two things: it's going to be fresh... and your wallet is about to get a little lighter. Worth it. I've been eating dim sum around the Bay for over 40 years, and Yan Peninsula brought me right back to the golden era of 90s San Francisco dim sum but with a subtle modern Hong Kong flair. I had both dim sum and dinner at Yan Peninsula in Millbrae, and overall it's a solid spot for classic Cantonese dishes whether you're with friends or family. The interior is bright and clean, which is a nice change from some of the older, cramped dim sum spots. The restaurant itself is quite large, but it didn't feel like there were enough staff working to match the space, which left some areas feeling a little empty and under attended. The place has a lot of potential, but the constantly looping broken video and audio during both brunch and dinner really distracted from the experience, and made the ambiance harder to overlook. On the food side, the shumai were excellent, and the charcoal salted egg yolk buns were good. I would avoid the soup dumplings though, they were underwhelming. For dinner, the clams were not fresh, which was disappointing, but the squab specials more than made up for it. At $13 per squab, it's easily the best deal I've had. Where I'm from, that's unheard of. Overall, despite a few misses, it's worth checking out if you want big, flavorful Cantonese dishes in a clean, casual setting. read more

A year ago I would've given this place 4 stars but today it just missed the mark. The bolo bbq bun deserves 1 star because the bread stinks of fermentation and overdue dairy and management refused to acknowledge that the ingredients had gone bad and claimed no one else had complained about it. Finally got to try Yan Peninsula after Yum's Bistro closed in Fremont. We came on a Monday at lunch time and there was no waiting even though the restaurant was relatively full. We even managed to get a parking spot in their parking lot. The restaurant is spacious with a glamorous ceiling. Table spacing is decent and comfortable. We were served our tea promptly and food came out at a nice pace. We ordered an assortment of dim sum: baked BBQ pork buns, house special shrimp Siu Mai, Siu Mai with shrimp, tangerine flavored beef balls, beef rice rolls, deep fried taro puffs, Chinese sausage buns, sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves, and bean curd skin rolls. The food was very disappointing. I ordered the fish head hot pot yesterday. When it was served, the fish was cold and the soup was only lukewarm. I asked the waitress to reheat it. When she brought it back, the pot was hot, but the fish was still cold. I asked them to reheat it again, but it was still only warm. This was a very disappointing experience, and I will not be coming back. First visit - Dim Sum We had a party of 10 and I was a guest. The service was good and everything ordered was delicious. It was kind of a work meeting so I was unable to really focus on the food, but the food arrived quickly and everything was piping hot. Second visit - Banquet Again I was kind of working I was the AV support. The restaurant has a very large screen which is connected to a windows pc. It can be used to display images and videos relatively easy. It does not have any additional software other than what comes with the operating system. If you want to play a video or slideshow please plan accordingly. That is bring all the individual components on a flash drive to play. Don't plan on using a PowerPoint presentation unless you bring your own computer. Please note that I brought my Surface Pro and it had display conflicts with the large screen onsite. The banquet dishes were all very good. but the dishes came out very staggered for the 30 tables. It is as if the kitchen isn't quite large enough or the staff wasn't sufficient. My mom and her friends come here every other month or so. The leftovers Mom has brought back have been pretty good. Watch out for the parking lot here. The entrance off Center Street is steep, so if you have a low riding car (even if it's stock), be careful and approach slowly and at an angle. That said, there are two ways to get into the lot, but the entrance off El Camino Real comes up quick and seems narrow for a 2-way. We have been here maybe 3-5 times within the last few weeks. The food was amazing! So authentic it was hard to read the menu because Chinese is first. So we knew we were in a good spot. There were only two of us so we couldn't order everything we wanted. Quickly led to a table and dropped off with menus and soon after with some tea. When we only had one more dish to come out, a server tried to offer to replace our plates with new plates, but we declined. After we were done, they packed up our leftovers for us and offered us free red bean desserts, sesame balls and some type of almond cookie. The red bean wasn't as sweet as I've typically eaten. The sesame balls would be better to be brought back home and air fried to crisp them up. Cookies were pretty good. Would I come again? Probably, but not go out of my way to come... It's taking me getting used to all of these updated and hip looking Dim Sum restaurants now and it's very prevalent in the El Camino-Millbrae areas. With the last amazing dim sum place that closed down, these newer restaurants have been popping up in the area. But, Yan Peninsula was a good visit and the food quality is excellent. Tried their usuals like the Shrimp Ha Gow, Sui Mai, Beef Rice Noodle, Pan-fried Dumplings, and even their special Lobster over e-noodles. So good btw! Everything was good, and the tea refills were good. The customers here are a good mix. Saw a pair of 20 or early 30-somethings dining here, just with friends or colleagues, which was interesting. Normally we go to dim sum because family wants to go lol. So it's a comfy place for the younger crowd too, that's awesome! There's a parking lot here, but you may have to circle around for a spot. Other than that, a good dim sum place to visit if you're in town visiting. read more

We stopped by Yan for dim sum before picking up my daughter at SFO, we selected Yan for its convenience to the airport and because I've never tried it before (we usually go to Dragon Beaux - very good, East Ocean in Emeryville, HL Peninsula, used to only go to Hong Kong Flower Lounge in Millbrae before it sadly closed). Our visit confirms that we have yet to find a place as good as Hong Kong Flower Lounge without having to pay for the super expensive Yank Sing dim sum in SF. We ordered a lot of items which were all okay (3/5): house special shrimp siu mai, steamed shanghai dumpling, pan seared scallion pancake, pan fried chives and shrimp dumpling, deep fried meat dumpling (2/5), grill chives and shrimp dumpling (2/5), Hong Kong style shrimp dumpling, BBQ pork rice noodle rolls (2/5), beef chow fun (very little beef, very little flavor overall) The only standout items that I would order again from Yan are: - Signature BBQ Pork Buns - 5*/5 these were truly outstanding, I'd just order a few of these and take them to go for an easy delicious lunch/snack - Steamed tofu skin rolls w/oyster sauce - 5*5, these were also outstanding, one of the best I've ever had - stir fried choy sum - 5/5, solid vegetable and large portion, not too oily The search for really good dim sum in the Bay Area continues...seems like it should be easier, doesn't it? read more

I was in the San Francisco area for a event and I was craving them some since I was in Chinatown area. I happen to find this place on Yelp and I decided to check it out and get to go. I only ordered a couple dishes and it ended up being almost 30 bucks. I got ha gow and shrimp rice rolls. I ended up waiting more than 30 minutes and almost an hour for food to go. At that point I was pretty upset since no one was answering me and I ordered ahead of time over the phone. Maybe it would have been a different experience if I was sitting down, but it looks like since I was ordering only to go no one remembered. And after when I ate the food didn't seem anything special. I probably wouldn't recommend coming here if you were looking for something quick, but I guess that's my fault for not doing research. read more

Came in again yesterday during usual dinner rush. No parking in the store's lot so had to cruise the nearby neighborhood for a clear spot. Once inside we got seated right away! Considering the parking, that was a pleasant surprise! There was some sort of party going on, but service was quick and attentive. Even gave us wet wipes without asking as they saw we ordered crab. Ambiance is nice, pretty bright and plenty loud. Dishes: Stir fried mixed chives dried shrimp and rose soy sauce chicken (half) out together. -Had the chives dish before and still love it. Great mix of textures and flavors and in general it's a dish that's a little different and shows some thought by the chef. -Chicken was nice. Little sweet and salty but mild. Chicken cooked well, still moist. Enjoyed it! Then other dishes came out 1 by 1. -Dried scallop and egg white fried rice- decent, light, but maybe a tad under flavored. Just ok. -Fried water spinach fermented bean curd- probably the worst dish of the bunch. Too watery, not much flavor, maybe a tad over cooked. Maybe backup chef did this dish? -Hong Kong style spicy crab- This was decent. Nicely presented, decent amount of crab, good flavor. I'm not a crab person, but ate quite a bit. Overall seems with a busy restaurant quality might suffer here. Will be back, but most likely off-hours when the chef has rested up and has his A-game going. read more

Ambiance: nice ceiling decor. Casual setting. One window in the whole restaurant so a bit darker. Parking: small lot and small spots. Street parking. There were a few spots in the lot left when we got there. Service: came on a Sunday at 10:45am. It wasn't that busy and we got a table for 4 right away. No greeting when we got there and took awhile to wave someone down to walk us to an available table. Took down our own order and waved down a waiter to ask the difference of 2 similar dishes -- he did not know and had to ask someone else. This happened twice when we asked him about the food -- you'd think the waiter would know this. Throughout the meal, had to wave people down for any type of service -- for water, for sauces, for the check, for boxes, etc. Not once did anyone ask how things were or if we wanted anything else. They were not even that busy, there were many empty tables so I am not sure why the service fell short. When leaving, the hostess/any of the staff did not say bye or thank you. Not one acknowledgement and just walked by us. AND 18% service charge is automatically added!! Food: 4/5. I'd say it was pretty good, didn't take too long and food came hot. This was one of the main pros. Unfortunately, the service was so subpar with the 18% automatic service charge that I'd rather go elsewhere with just as good dim sum and better service. read more

We got here right when they opened at 10am. The interior decor is like a venue...beautifully decorated ceiling. Food was really good and fresh. Service was okay. You will have to wave down a server to get what you want. read more
