Excellent, authentic Dongbei food. We tried a bunch of items from their menu and just about everything was delicious. They're affiliated with the New China Foods in Milpitas but the food they offer here is completely different from the one in Milpitas, besides some overlap in the marinated meats that you can buy at their counter. We got: cold dishes from the counter - I'd skip this. The tofu noodles were harder than I prefer, and the pig ear and peanuts were only fine. pi dong - I'm used to the kind that is already marinated and brown colored, but this one was pale white and very jelly heavy. It's not my favorite rendition but was refreshing in between bites of other dishes, and my mom seemed to enjoy it. pork bone - Do not miss this. This was my favorite dish. You'll see them piled up on the counter - don't be deceived. It looks dry on the outside but it's so tender on the inside. I didn't really notice it on the menu, but our server recommended it, so make sure to ask your server about it. special style sweet & sour pork - Iconic Dongbei dish, seemed like every table got one. Even though I'm not a sweet and sour person, I thought this was pretty good - great crispiness and I liked that the sweet sauce wasn't overwhelming Chinese hamburger- Another must get. Unlike most rou jia mo, this one came with flaky bread rather than the usually bready bread (it's more like pita or English muffin texture). I loved how the flaky bread paired with the juicy meat. The meat is flavorful and it just goes so well together. green pepper with soy sheets - This dish was too spicy for me, but otherwise solid. The soy sheets were super soft and tender Da La Pi - Weirdly didn't see this on their menu but is prominently displayed as a picture on the wall. The potato noodles had a really soft soft noodle texture which I usually like but it was kind of too soft for me. I don't know what I was but something about this rendition didn't speak to me and usually I love this dish Spicy braised large intestines - Solid, nice flavor and good chewy texture. read more

The more I come here, the more I question my life choices. I've been to this restaurant over 10 times because it's close to work and, well, the food is AMAZING. Those appetizers in the glass cabinet are so good, they should come with a warning: 'May cause addiction.' Since the main dishes take their sweet time arriving, I usually order the appetizers first to keep my stomach from staging a revolt. When they first opened, everything was perfect--great service, nice atmosphere, zero complaints. But I guess word got out about the food, and now the service has taken a nosedive. On my last visit, we ordered two dishes and three appetizers to share. We were there for less than 40 minutes, and the server was on us like a hawk, asking every minute if we were done. I felt like I was in an eating contest. Finally, after giving in to the pressure, the server swooped in, packed our food, and handed me the check with the urgency of someone defusing a bomb. As I reached for my wallet, he just stood there, hand outstretched, like he was about to get a tip for speed. So, while I'll never dine in again (for the sake of my sanity), the food is innocent in all this. We were in the neighborhood and with the help of Yelp, this was highly rated. We arrived around 7PM and there was a wait with three parties ahead of us. The restaurant has a nice system to sign in. There is a black display which you press the white button to activate. From there you enter a phone number, name and how many in your party. The restaurant isn't super large and the wait was about 30 minutes. We figured this was a testament to how good they were. We ordered dry beef chow fun, broccoli with garlic, spicy eggplant with garlic...the portions were generous and delicious. I tried the ribs which is purchased at $15.99 per pound. It's not your typical ribs like baby back or St Louis ribs. I ordered one pound and half the portion were huge pieces of bone which I needed to work at to get to the smallest of pieces of meat. The bones that did have more meat were dry and crispy (like they reheated it). My wife and I noticed something odd. A party of four sat after us. I got the ribs quickly, but then came a long pause for the other dishes. In the meantime, the other party that arrived later received six dishes. Just made us wonder what's going on. We waited 45 minutes for our food, BUT it was WORTH the wait. Every dish that was served to us (including the complimentary cold appetizer pig ears) was very tasty and perfectly seasoned. Nice small local business to try out today. We were in Milbrae to dropoff things to my sister-in-law. Just Yelp what looked good and tasty in the area and decided to try out New China. The jia jia mein (great texture on noodles and tasty meat sauce), Chinese burgers filled with pork (so flaky, almost too much meat) and salt and pepper chicken wings (wings cut in half, battered and fried) was prepared perfectly. Summary: Decent food, but terrible takeout policy Details: While the food itself is not bad (decent flavors, not too salty) and includes a number of dishes that are harder to find in the area, their lack of outdoor seating combined with their takeout policy bumps them down to a place I have no interest in visiting again (though the GF feels otherwise). Let me set the scenario for you: we showed up on a Friday night around 820pm, to find all tables occupied (mid-meal already, with food out), and a handful of people waiting in line. Asking if we can put an order in to-go, we were told that orders are taken and fulfilled in the order in which dining parties arrive: not, mind you, just those who are already seated, which would make sense, but including those who are still waiting in line, to be seated at some unknown time. Which means that even if the kitchen is idle because everyone inside has already finished ordering, you still need to wait until everyone __still waiting in line__ is seated and has ordered, before your to-go order is fulfilled. We had to ask again because a first come first serve policy based on unseated guests sounded somewhat unusual, and then, thinking that this particular employee might have mistaken information, decided to order online instead, only to find out that yes, this was in fact the policy, regardless of how your takeout order is place, which resulted in us not getting our small takeout order until almost an hour later, around 930pm. I had a great experience at New China Restaurant when I went. I found this place looking for a restaurant near Millbrae and came across this restaurant after seeing plenty of 5 star reviews on here and I can see why. It's a bit easy to miss just driving or walking by, but we had a pleasant experience overall. The owner was also very nice and hospitable like other reviews have stated. He also gave us good recommendations for the menu since we were new customers. My favorite dishes would be the fish fillet with the garlic sauce which was incredibly tasty and the Shanxi pork noodle soup is also a must try. Everything has huge portions and is very filling with high quality ingredients. The restaurant is very clean as well and has a nice atmosphere. They also have frozen food you can get togo. Also want to point out that the sesame balls are only available on Saturday and Sunday according to the owner. A hidden gem in the Bay Area! Authentic northeast Chinese food! My favorite top 3: 1. Spical Style sweet and sour pork, also called Fired pork in scoop or 锅包肉 . This one is their signature. Crispy outside but juicy pork slice inside. Can't stop eating them. 2. Mung clear noodle in sauce (东北大拉皮). A secret menu, highly recommended! It taste like sesame sauce salad with shredded cucumber and carrots. 3. Pickled Cabbage with pork belly and frozen tofu.(酸白菜五花肉炖冻豆腐) . This one cooked like the stew. There are so many dishes on the menu I wanted to try. Some aren't easily found in other Chinese restaurants. The portions here are large, so for the price you're paying, it's not bad at all. My favorite is the Northeast Fried Eggplants, which I only ever had it here and is the reason I kept coming back, and the Special Style Sweet and Sour Pork, which is crispy and a pleasant surprise. The restaurant has a refrigerated/frozen section where you can select goodies like pre-made dumplings, soy milk, zong zi (glutinous rice dumplings), buns, etc. There's also a deli counter in which they display traditional appetizers/side dishes. We really enjoyed the baiye Q tofu in spicy sauce- thinly sliced tofu with a chewy consistency ($11.99/pound). We also liked the liang pi aka cold skin noodles ($11.99). Didn't see a vegetable chow mein or friend rice on the menu, but they kindly accommodated our request ($11.99 each). First of all, I am a big follower of New China which I think originated from Milpitas (operated by parents) and has a sister location in Union City. I have been coming to this new Milbrae location, operated by son whom I had the pleasure to talk to. The rating only reflects the customer service as I would like to discuss this experience further with the owner. I dropped by today (4/30/23) around 3:30pm. I was helped by a gentleman (in his 40s) behind the counter. I repeated 5 times that I wanted 1-2 items option of prepared food, only to receive a condescending look from the worker without a word. Then I upgrade to large 2-3 items after finding out the small size. The worker then spoke to me in perfect English. I proceeded to pay with my credit card. Then he flicked the plastic barrier so hard to show me the sign for credit card minimum, so hard that the barrier hit my head. I understand the importance of paying cash vs. credit card due to inflation and transaction fees. I firmly told the worker that it was very disrespectful and unprofessional to treat a customer like this. He looked away and shook his head as if I was the rude one for calling out his ungrateful behavior. This was a very unacceptable experience and I hope no one would have to interact with this particular worker. read more

The green bean chicken was flavorful spiced with sprinkles of black bean spice and garlic. It was soft, tender and crispy. The fried fish fillets with black bean sauce was lightly flavorful. It needed a little more black beans. Instead of fried, I think they should stir fried the fish without the batter but with black bean, soy sauce and a minced ginger. The honey walnut shrimp was amazing. Delicious! Go and enjoy your meal at off beat hours. Evenings are SROnly. It's packed in a small area. The wait is 20-30 minutes. The secret's out about New China's delicious, authentic food, and now you might face a wait. I have found New China Restaurant to be pretty full at all times on weekends, even at 2:30 PM and 5:30 PM. Here are my favorite dishes, ranked in order. I would definitely recommend eating family style, ordering the same number of dishes as people in your party. 1. "Chinese Burgers" 肉夹馍 - Not hamburgers at all, but a street food with a flaky scallion pancake-equivalent stuffed with flavorful pork and scallions. I'm salivating just thinking about the pork, which they get so tender and at just the right proportions. Served in 4 portions. 2. Dongbei Da La Pi 东北大拉皮 - A classic. Their potato noodles taste clean and refreshing with the carrots and cucumbers, but I do think this one grew on me. Large portions. (I believe this one is not listed on the menu, but is one of the framed posters they hang on the wall.) 3. Smoked Duck 熏鸭 - Great smoked flavor, which gets better as you eat more. Not as large of a dish as the others. 4. Special Style Sweet & Sour Pork 锅包肉 - Very tasty, fried, but no sauce drenching the pork and therefore less sweet than the Americanized version of sweet and sour pork. Pretty large portion, so hopefully you have more than 2 people working on this dish! Oh, and don't get the Zhajiangmian 炸酱面 unless you like surprises because it is not what your typical Zhajiangmian tastes like -- they put their own unique twist on it, and it did not satisfy our craving. Like many of the best Chinese restaurants, the service is minimal unless you flag them down to order or request something. They are getting busier and busier, plus I see tables frequently ordering a ton of extra food to take home for leftovers as well. However, I feel that most of my favorite dishes lose quality when taken home, so I'd recommend coming here in a group of 4 to try as much as you can. Nearly all the tables seat 4 anyway! read more

We went here after my son heard rave reviews about this restaurant. This place is easy to pass by as it is not noticeable as you drive by, but it is next to a motorcycle store with many motorcycles parked in display. When you first walk in, you are surprised with large freezer/fridges lining the wall with dumplings and food items you can buy. There is also an area you can buy ready made food to go. The space is a bit small and tables generally fit 4-5 and can squeeze in 6 or combine tables. When we went there early so there was no line and few occupied tables, but for lunch by the time we left, the place was packed! Now with me it is all about the food which has a heavier emphasis on my rating. Food was delicious- one of the better Chinese restaurants I have been to in a long time! First, it is not your typical Chinese fare that often is Cantonese or Szechuan out in CA. I think it is more Northern province. So your sweet sour pork is not the usual red Americanized version that my kids like lol! BUT, this batter fried large thin pork cuts was very different with a different slant on sweet vinegary taste- it was very good! Although more batter than meat, but still very good! 4.5 stars for this. ShangXi Pork noodle soup- light but rich broth still with a bit softer noodle than I like but still good, baby bok choy and pork cubes. This was like homemade comfort food- definitely if I was under the weather, I would be door dashing this one over to me! 4 stars. The Chinese burger- perfect round green onion pancakes cut in halves. It says 2 burgers but there are 4 halves that come out and one is filling enough even! It is filled with ground meat and green onions- this was yummy! I would suggest hoisin sauce to be offered on the side as a condiment, but the waiter who didn't seem to understand much English or even our Chinese lol! Waiter had a language barrier which kind of slowed things up a bit. So think hoisin on the side that we can drizzle would be good, but I am assuming this dish in their province must not do that and he offered a chili oil spice which I did not realize it was chili oil bc I couldn't see in the deep bowl! I certainly dunked it in a bit too much and wow it was SPICY hot lol as I drank all my water in one long gulp! This was crispy and flaky and very filling by itself even! 4.5 stars! Mongolian Beef- wow, this is one of the best I ever had! Very tender beef and just right in everything else! 5 stars. Nyan gau - this one was drenched in a dark brown sauce which was kind of weird bc I wanted what the other table had and asked for that and theirs was plain white looking?! Nevertheless, the sauce made it good and well, saucy! Only complaint here was the Napa cabbage was so thin you could barely see any- I was hunting for some. So I would cut it a bit thicker to make it more substantial like it had some at least and ground meat the same- it was more like added spices than anything to make it a dish which was mainly the rice cakes. So add more ground meat and Napa cabbage slices that these are noticeable at least. 3.5 stars- if added the meat and Napa cabbage for it to be a bit more than it would have been 4 stars. Pea sprouts 3 stars regular like anywhere else. The service is very SLOW as they bring one dish out at a time! So as you finish one dish then the next one comes. This needs to be improved bc who wants that?! The waitress was apologetic saying they were so busy( at first no one was there but understandable when it got busy!) and it took us an hour to just eat and couple of times at the end we were ready to go but couldn't because two dishes still had to come out! So everyone know you will have to wait if you order the sweet and sour pork bc they said they have to marinate or batter(?) it for like 20 minutes to sit there before doing anything is what I understand from her limited English. So just a heads up. Although pea sprouts is fast and easy to cook( I cook this so I know) that came even later! Think staff is limited especially cooks, and they didn't realize how popular this place would become so they are working out the challenges maybe? Overall, I really go by the food so the food is a solid averaged out to 4.75 stars and so easily can go to 5 stars if they implement a few suggestions and improve on the speed and service. Really what I think this place needs as it is getting consistently popular is a bigger location with more staff. So hopefully it is wildly successful and can do that and they will be more successful and in a restaurant front that is not hidden, but more noticeable to draw even more people in! Not sure what the hype of this restaurant is but the dishes we ordered only were happy with two of them and that's the bean curd string like noodle cold dish and the Shanghai rice cakes had good flavor. The other male staff gave us the check and oddly was just standing there waiting for it which gave us a weird feeling. Usually they give you check a then leaves and comes back for it but at this place, the guys was hovering over us giving us a rushed, hurry up and pay feeling.
