A thank you to my wife's manager for sharing a hidden gem in Chinatown to grab lunch! New Cholon! Vietnamese owned. This place has always been a grocery and dry goods store way back in the day along North King Street, near River Street, and next to Chun's Meat Market. You can also access this store directly from the Harbor Village Chinatown Municipal parking lot from the rear of the store. Inside is bright and spacious, and packed with variety of Asian and Vietnamese items (includes frozen items as well). They always have an array of Mooncake selections during Moon Festival time. Another array is the amount of ready to eat food items with fried, baked, steamed, savory and sweet, and more! All the food is prepared very well. Sauces are flavorful and spot on. My favorite is the Pate So. Flaky, light puff pastry crust with delicious and tasty pate filling. Quite filling! Spring Rolls has generous filling. Even though not crispy if just fried. It was still good. Bun was good and not much difference compared to restaurants. Overall, an awesome store that's clean and spacious and full of things to eat! read more

New Cholon, hmm I need to ask the owner of the store what New Cholon stand for, strange name for Asian market but this my favorite Asian shop when I am at Chinatown. So much good stuff here, reminds me of shopping at Orange County or San Jose, the closest thing besides another shop ( Gon & Ti) I like this better. This is one of the stores I need to get out quick as I want to get everything, all of favorite Vietnamese goodies, tons of ready to eat food items, including Vietnamese desserts too! Best to shop here on the weekends as you can pick up the package food and desserts and plan for your weekend meals and also pick up groceries. New Cholon's package noodle selection, is not the greatest, I was looking for a specific brand but didn't see. I'll have to stock up when I travel to OC for this particular one. The good thing about New Cholon is they take credit cards here, the junk part is the prices aren't always clearly labeled on the items- will have to ask staff or will be a surprise at the register. During this most recent visit, I parked in the loading zone real quick and crossed over to grab my items quick, don't recommend you doing this- find parking, you need the time to browse around, I just grabbed a few items quick, fried steamed pork ( which reminds me of my childhood when my mom got this for us) now at $10. wow, I remember paying $5. for the same product 10, few nem pieces ( $1.25) deep fried tofu at $1.50 per piece comes form the tofu factory, and the pickled mustard cabbage caught my eyes, @$11. per lb. The pickled mustard cabbage was really good, I def. get more when I am back! I love the steamed pork, which I used for jook, rice dish, banh mi and salads. Overall New Cholon is a great addition to Chinatown, offering unique and authentic Asian Goods! Check out NW, you never know what items you will find here and may actually need. read more

Gem of a grocery store in Chinatown. Delicious food (try the prepped meals!!), very clean, great prices and friendly staff. Great place to pick up provisions and food for adventures on the island. We'll definitely come back next time we are in town! (FYI - I am informed that as of late 2024, the store is under new ownership and management. I spend my weekend mornings in Chinatown shopping for food and supplies. I pretty much have a list by Friday night of things I need to pick up. Several months ago I was asked by a colleague to get shrimp chips. I initially went to my go-to Chinese grocery store to buy a box of those colorful ones that most of us can recognize. These are fond treats of my childhood as my mom would make them every so often, as well as see them when you have crispy chicken at Chinese restaurants. However, after frying them up my colleagues and I realized these colorful shrimp chips lacked the shrimp flavor and the texture was odd. This sent me on a hunt looking for real shrimp chips. I did find other grocery stores that carry other brands but in the back of my mind, I was still not satisfied. I then recall being served prawn crackers and shrimp chips when dining at Vietnamese restaurants. This made me want to look at other grocery stores, typically Vietnamese grocery stores looking for these prawn crackers or shrimp chips. Just recently, I noticed a new grocery store on N King Street, just a few doors down from Oahu Market and popular Fong's Meat Market. It was painted olive green and the bright lighting caught my attention. I walked over and noticed their signage posted up of "New Cholon" (NC). Upon entry, I was impressed on how clean and well organized the merchandise was displayed at NC. I immediately checked out the premade foods and ogled over the packs of summer rolls, sweet and savory glutinous treats. But I was on a mission, so I walked further deep into the store and in less than a minute, I located the area where prawn, shrimp and vegetable chips are. These offerings seemed legitimate so I picked up one of each. While standing in line to pay for my items, I noticed there were some shoppers buying fresh Vietnamese baguettes for banh mi sandwiches and fresh herbs. It was unfortunate I was on a tight schedule so I didn't have the time to leisurely shop around. Paying for my merchandise was super easy. The staff rung me up and automatically gave me a cash receipt for my purchase without asking. I didn't experience any language barriers as the staff's English was pretty good. Overall, I had a very pleasant first time experience where it has me wanting to explore New Cholon more. I did witness a large selection of face masks and a bucket of house made sour mustard cabbage. Perhaps I can pick some up and give it a try for the employee meal one day. read more

Wow! I'm a local that likes to watch foodie videos on YouTube and this store is clean, new and inviting. Lots of prepared food to try. There are a lot of Vietnamese seasonings, noodles and even baguettes. I'm here today to buy items to make summer rolls. I'm soo excited. I'm still learning about Vietnamese food and items are clearly marked. I've been to older stores and was unsure of the frozen items so I never bought anything. Only thing that needs improvement is clearly stated prices are not available. read more

I wish I knew about this place sooner! I only stick to certain stores and usually am trying to do my errands as fast as possible. It's spacious, super clean, and has a lot of cool canned, dry, ready-to-eat/grab-and-go meals, and frozen goods. You can find banh cuon sheets, frozen vegan meat substitutes (so amazing!), fresh herbs, and pickled carrots and daikon for all your Vietnamese dishes, either those that you are making from scratch, or you'd like to put quickly together. I did find that the bag of fried tofu I purchased, which looked like it was freshly fried (i.e. not vacuum packed for mass distribution), $4, did go bad in a few days. I already knew there was a gamble such that it wasn't on ice (because it was fresh fried), and it was a warmer day. However, I'm not going to let that stop me. If you need Vietnamese ingredients, this is the place to go! read more

Great store with lots of Vietnamese ingredients and fresh dishes earlier in the day. The store is small and you can easily ask the ladies at the front what the prices are. Their prices are also very reasonable compared to other markets/stores in Chinatown. read more
