I debated for a long time since my visit in March 2025 to leave a review because I don't like leaving bad reviews on small businesses that I have only visited once. I found about this hair salon through the Krave Beauty founder Liah Yoo's Instagram reel on this place. The price point is amazing for NYC, but my regular hair salon in NC is about the same price; so the price wasn't a driving factor. As I was on a girls trip with 3 other girl friends, I wanted to find something fun for us to do - In this case was, New City One Salon. It has been 9 months since my hair cut here, and I absolutely hated my visit. I have typical Asian hair, but I got perm about a year before my visit in June 2024 and was in desperate need to for some clean up. I have half curly and hair straight hair, and I have had my hair mid to long length since I was in middle school so I can put it up in a pony tail if it gets in the way. My appointment was at 9 am when they opened. Owner or employees showed up late, so we got into the salon late. I had 4 girls on the appointment, and another person showed up. This salon is quite small, so it was very tight having other customers when my group is already 4. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I showed the picture of the style I wanted and mentioned that I want the side bangs (showing the face framing bangs from the picture) to be shoulder length.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I wear glasses, so I was basically blind while getting a hair cut. What I noticed was the hair stylist kept on cutting my side bangs shorter and shorter and shorter to the point where I had about a thumb length from my ears, which I can't even put them into a pony. I had to eventually tell him to stop cutting my bang or else I would have had a whole front bang. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I'm not sure if there was a language barrier (we communicated in English), if he didn't know how to cut permed hair, or if he didn't actually paid attention to the picture I showed him.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] But I got a hair cut that I did NOT ask for about 5" shorter than what I wanted. While I was waiting for 3 girls to get their own hair cut, I noticed my hair was uneven on left and right side. I asked him to make them match, and he proceeded to cut more of my bangs for no reason. This was one of the worst hair cuts I've ever gotten in my life. If I was 15 years old, I would have cried my eyes out from getting this hair cut. [[HIGHLIGHT]]What came after was every single one of my group complaining about the hair cut and I felt extremely guilty for bringing everyone here.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] For my work, I have to put my hair into hair nets. Even to this day, I have to carry 4+ hair pins so I can pin my hair down on short bangs and sides that I didn't ask for just to put my hair up in a pony tail. I also went back to my hair salon in NC (Hair News in Cary, NC) and asked for this hair cut to be fixed. Let's say that my stylist was horrified at my hair.... Lesson learned. My daughter and I were searching for a new salon and decided to try New City One. I'm very particular about my hair and have tried a range of salons, from high-end to more typical ones. I usually go to Korean salons but decided to give this place a shot because it's close to my work. If you're looking for a fancy atmosphere, this might not be the place for you. However, if you want a talented stylist, this is the spot. I got a fantastic haircut, and my daughter had her hair colored from black to milk tea brown. Stopped by Sat morning around 11 am. Place was packed which is always a great sign of a quality business. My second time here and [[HIGHLIGHT]]I had the pleasure of Donnie, the owner, cutting my hair this time.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Despite people waiting, he did not rush and was attentive and gentle while he lopped off 3 inches. I showed two pictures to who I assume was Don and he meticulously checked my references throughout the process. We started with a wash and massage, which was super relaxing and comfortable. I am pretty surprised by the positive reviews here, but I guess that is what happens when you get a $20 haircut. Two stars are for the general courtesy. HYGIENE -- A woman got her haircut right before me and Lily just sat me down in the same chair. There was tons of hair on the floor and nobody bothered sweeping it up before I sat down so I hopped over small piles of hair to get to the seat. The thing that shocked me was that I didn't see any barbicide or anything to clean brushes. There were just combs and brushes in a drawer that were being used. The kicker was when using a hairbrush on me, Lily's colleague needed it for another client sitting next to me. Lily just handed the brush to him and he immediately used it on his client !!! No cleaning, nothing. I don't have lice or anything, but that is another level of brazen disregard for sanitation, especially during covid. HAIRCUT-- I showed Lily two pictures of what I wanted and she just randomly started chopping away. There was no parting of the hair to make even sections, just sporadic chopping which left my hair much shorter than what I asked for. I think she knew she didn't get it right because she kept telling me to wear my hair naturally curly so that the uneven length would be hidden. I told her I usually flatiron my hair, but whatever. I was looking for an affordable haircut in Chinatown, and found this salon in my research. Reviewers praised Lily for her work, and mentioned that she moved to a different location, "Sunny City Beauty Salon," which was on 7 Pell Street. That's where I went without an appointment. Please do visit her there! I did a wash, cut, and blow dry for $28. I asked Lily for layers and where I wanted the cut to stop at. I was able to converse with her in Cantonese, and she does speak in other Chinese dialects and English. Lily truly delivered how I wanted the cut to look like. She was attentive, hard at work, very reassuring, kept me updated on the process, and was sweet. She also noticed some strands of white hair, and asked if she could snip them off. She really took the time to do that, and I'm so grateful! :') At the end, she showed me what the results looked like, and it came out pretty! She took a picture too! It felt like he was just snipping my ends with no proper intention. The part of the blowout is where I wanted to cry. I showed 5 photo references in hopes to get a normal blowout. Instead he decided to blow dry my hair in high heat , then blow dry it straight. He didn't even do my bangs correctly. shortly after he straightens my hair with a straightener. I didn't want to be rude so I showed him the photo again and he said he will try. He takes out a curler and adds more heat to my hair. The worse part, I ended up having to curl my hair because he was not doing it correctly. I stumbled upon this salon while trying to find another salon next door that looked to be closed that day. New City One Salon is located on the second floor, so follow the sign up the steps. I was able to walk in on a Wednesday afternoon without an appointment. Upon entering, I mentioned I wanted a simple haircut. The hairstylist, Don, showed me where to hang my bag and jacket, and asked if I also wanted to shampoo my hair. This comes at an additional cost so be aware of that! The girl who washed my hair was very gentle and thorough. She carefully shampooed my hair twice and conditioned, and even massaged my scalp at the end- I personally love when salons do this, but you can definitely ask them to leave this part out if you're not comfortable with that. Afterwards, I told Don what I was hoping for with my cut and showed him a photo as an example. Because I spoke Mandarin, Don and I had a pleasant conversation throughout the haircut. He was respectful of times when i just wanted to be quiet too. Don did a great job with my hair. The cut took around 20 minutes for my medium length hair, and so I was in and out of the salon in around an hour. Prices are very reasonable; it was $18 before tip for a wash and cut for my medium length hair. Because I spoke Mandarin, I didn't have a good sense of their English skills, but I feel like they would definitely be able to understand what you're looking for, especially if you come with a photo of the style you want. I initially decided to get a haircut at another salon in Chinatown however they were either closed or I just did not understood the sign outside their door because it was in Chinese. Walked around a bit and saw New City's red blue rotating barber sign ( I now seriously wonder how that became the universal barber sign). Got my hair cut by Don. Super professional, know exactly what and how to execute my style. I have south east asian hair and I would say 98.69% of the barbers and stylists in America can't cut south East Asian hair (they either cut it too short which makes it stands up or too long which makes it look messy, it's a real pain in the ass because now I have to wait another 3 weeks and lost money while at it.) Lily washed my hair and she is also a hairstylist. Dan (Dony) who did my hair is so attentive and a perfectionist just like me. He took his time to take care of my hair even though it was already passed their closing time. I showed Dan a picture of what I like, he did exactly like the picture. When he heard I want a style thats easy to maintain he gave me his professional advice based on my hair type. I called in and asked for Don (sits far left by window) and he welcomed me in with a big smile and willing to listen to my specific request for my hair. I was nervous but he made me Feel Comfortable. It's been two years already and Don still greets me with the same big smile and accommodates me, even when I am in a rush. I LOVE my hair color and highlights! Love this place! Absolutely friendly staff & super reasonable prices. They speak English, Cantonese, and Mandarin (and possibly other Chinese dialects). Come here if you're looking for a no fuss, relatively simple haircut for less than $20 (incl. wash, cut, blowout). They do Women, Men, & Children's haircuts. A lot of locals come here so there is sometimes a wait, especially in the afternoons. But if you go there in the early mornings, there's hardly a wait! Some reasons why I love coming here: + They will cut your hair exactly how you want it (ex: If I want to only cut off 1 inch, they will only cut off 1 inch and no more than that!) + The BEST value for ladies with long hair... $15 for a shampoo wash (incl. a nice head massage), cut, and blow dry (a lil' bit of hair product included to make hair look and smell extra fabulous). I usually have long, thick hair with some frizz from time to time. Other places will charge at least $25+ due to the length and volume, but not here! The whole process takes about 30-45 min depending how much I want to cut off and how I want it to be styled... and that's still only $15. If you're not running over here yet for a haircut, I don't know what you're waiting for.. + Short hair and men's haircut is probably around $12. BEST PRICES EVER! + They remember who you are and things you've talked about (even if you haven't seen them in 1+ years). + Willing to chit chat or let you sit in silence (up to you really). They are super nice and I would love to engage in more conversation, but my Chinese is kind of limited. + Won't try to upsell you on unnecessary products! WILL give you good tips on how to take better care of your hair. + Been coming here for 10+ years and the main staff has always been the same (I don't need to explain how I want my hair to be cut since I usually get the same style every time and they always remember no matter how long it's been since they've seen me). Interior hasn't changed much- it's a really no frills place, which I don't mind at all. Ladies, if you're only looking to do a simple trim for upkeep or if you're like me and tend to grow out your hair super long before the next cut for fear of it being cut too short, why go to a place that will charge upwards of $30??? My usual stylist is William, but have also had my hair cut done by Lily. Both are fantastic. William remembers exactly how I like my hair cut even though there might be a year (or more!) in between my visits. I always tip generously because of their great service and low prices (and want them to stay in business forever!). On a recent trip, they removed their AC from their window. I had this place bookmarked for a while and finally got a chance to stop by during lunch today. My wedding is less than a month away and I really need a trim, but was anxious about going to a salon because they always seem to cut more off than I ask them to. Before Don started with my haircut, I let him know I just wanted a trim and about an inch off..he worked quickly and skillfully all while holding a good conversation with me. After the haircut, my hair looks and feels a lot healthier and I paid only $12 for my haircut (make sure to bring cash, as this place accepts cash only).
