I learned that the owners met in Chile, where they were inspired to start a donut and coffee food truck. They sold their handcrafted donuts from a vintage VW bus on the streets of Santiago before eventually bringing their passion to Pennsylvania. Today, they have two locations, and I had the pleasure of visiting the Jim Thorpe shop. The storefront is charming, welcoming, and has a few seats where you can relax and enjoy your treats with a fresh cup of coffee. Best of all, everything is made fresh on-site. Their display case is filled with an impressive selection of classic and specialty donuts, along with colorful macarons, French toast cinnamon rolls, flaky croissants, and a full lineup of coffee drinks ranging from lattes to iced coffees. Honestly...wow! Deciding what to order wasn't easy. Since it was already midday, I kept it simple and went with a Boston Cream donut. It was incredibly fresh, light, and filled with rich, creamy custard, then topped with a smooth layer of chocolate. Absolutely delicious! A special shout-out to Sarah, who made the visit even better. She was warm, friendly, and incredibly helpful, taking the time to explain the different donuts and macarons. Everything she described sounded amazing, and she definitely had my mouth watering. I had to show some self-control or I would've walked out with half the display case! She was fantastic. If you're spending the day in Jim Thorpe, do yourself a favor and make a stop at Donerds Donuts. In addition to doing all the baking for the cafe she eventually became the manager for the front of the house. When the cafe closed she started to work exclusively for Trè at various events. They were smokey, which I wasn't expecting. I'm not sure I liked them.) My 14 year old grandson ordered the pulled pork. Here's how it was described on the menu: 24 hour braised pork/dijon bbq sauce/chef side (which was coleslaw). To be truthful this kid is not the most adventurous with his food choices. When I asked him if he wanted the chef's to put the sauce on his pork he said it sounded great. Here are his exact words after eating his sandwich: "The pork was cooked perfectly and it was nice and juicy. The bun seemed a little bit stale. The sauce was amazing. The slaw was decent." One oddity was it looked like they attempted to melt a slice of American on top, and it was at best, partially melted. Very odd looking. As a few others have mentioned, it's basically self-serve if you eat in since they seem to be very busy with handling takeout orders. The food was brought to their front counter and then I got the head nod that it was mine to pick up. One plus was the nice delicacy of having Guer's tea in the fridge case. I was looking for a Zimmy since Nesquehoning is certainly close enough to Lehighton, but I don't remember seeing any. Either way, good enough. Overall, as I mentioned prior, this is your classic local jack of all trades red sauce Italian joint that every town has a few of.
