Color me impressed. I almost never order paprikash out at restaurants, because it's a dish that's close to my heart, and it's one of those things where no one can replicate a dish that's been made for you with love from a mother or grandmother. However, after meeting some colleagues here for lunch, I felt compelled to at least try the paprikash since all my coworkers swore New Era did this dish justice. I was firstly pleasantly surprised by the price- $10 and change for a combination of white and dark meat served along with a side and strudel? That's a winning deal in my book. In addition, I notice this place had distinct family feel, which gave me a good feeling. Also, I got the feeling from looking at their menu that they really have one or two specialties, and everything else on their menu is just filler, which clued me in that it's best to just go with their specialty. The food took a while to come out, but after she served up our plates I could see it was nothing if not homemade. The dish was served on one of those large dinner plates, full to the brim of the delicious paprikash broth. I will say the broth was less creamy than I am accustomed to, more of an oily broth, however it had a wonderful bite to it. I'm sure this restaurant uses nothing but sharp Hungarian paprika, not the sweetened version most restaurants use. The spaetzles also appeared to be homemade, or at least something close to it. They were a pretty large size and had a great doughy bite to them. I should also mention that the standard option comes with half dark meat and half white meat; this restaurant serves this dish with the whole pieces of chicken and bone-in, which I love because it adds a wonderful flavor and richness to the dish, not to mention it's incredibly tender coming off the bone. The chicken also has that great tenderness that you get with roasted or braised chicken. In my experience, most restaurants choose to use chunks or shreds of just plain old chicken breast in their paprikash, which subtracts from the flavor of the dish in my opinion. However, New Era does offer an all-white meat version for a small upcharge to those that prefer it. Lastly, who can resist a slice of strudel after a meal like this? Your choice of apple or cheese, and I confess I had to have mine boxed up to take home, which the waitress was happy to do. Overall, I loved the family-owned feel of this place, and I really can't fault their preparation of one of my most favorite comfort foods. I'm already eager to return to try other things on their menu, although I'll admit it'll be hard to keep me from ordering the paprikash again as it was just that good! read more

New Era is Hungarian restaurant and is family owned. Sounded good enough that I decided to try it. I ordered the most popular dish they have there, Chicken Paprikash. The food was flavorless and not what I expected. The side of rice that I got was cold and bland. Nice staff and decent service though but it did not compensate for bad taste in my mouth when I left this place. I've had much better Hungarian food elsewhere including those homemade by my Hungarian friends. read more

My husband & his family love New Era and visit monthly. However, I being the picky jerk I am am not such a big fan of theirs. I recently tired their dumplings - they were okay but it really felt like something was missing and they were really slimy. But the juices they are served in are just right, not too spicy & not too bland. The dumpling itself was also cooked perfectly and had a great texture. Our waitress & the young girl behind the dessert counter were both incredibly friendly and helpful. They had just baked fresh cheese & apple strudel and brought me one fresh out of the oven. Now this is not their fault, it's mine, but I didn't realize it would be served hot and was grossed out by the texture & smell of the hot cheese. But the flaky crust on the outside was delicious! This is only my second time trying them and I wasn't happy with my food the first time either but it wasn't terrible so I'd be willing to try again. After all, third times a charm! read more

I took my mom here for a ethnic Mother's Day meal. It was great. All the Serbian favorites and a roast duck dinner for under $9. The chevappi was fine and worth it. I had Turkish coffee for desert and it is recommend. I will definitely be coming back. read more

Attended a social gathering of 30+ people last evening at the New Era. Plusses and lots of minuses. There was only one server for the room. Occasionally a second would come in. I ordered a Bloody Mary, asked for it to be strong. I got an ice filled glass of tomato juice and a splash of vodka. When I asked for another with less ice and more product, I got pretty much the same with a lime. When I hot the check, I was charged $7.25 for each drink. The server took my last drink before I finished. when I went to my car for a moment. The steak I ordered was cooked to order and properly seasoned. The fries were cold. Cole slaw had no seasoning and was soaking wet. My wife ordered the famous Chicken Paprikas. The chicken was full of gristle and tough. The gravy watery with flat dumplings. Both of us being of eastern European decent, thought it was a fail. The proportion was small. They offer a children's sized portion- the child would be very hungry. Should the group return next year, we'll attend, but won't eat here otherwise. read more

An interesting restaurant, primarily American food (burgers, fried chicken, chops, spaghetti) with several Eastern European dishes on the menu. The Chicken Paprikash was tender, but clearly missing the sour cream that is usually added at the end to give the sauce a thicker, richer consistency. This might be the reason for the "bland" or "not what I expected" reviews, and I'll admit it was surprising to see just a paprika-colored broth. If I could rate this place a negative 5 I would. Staff is great but the food is horrible. My wife and I tried new era when we had first moved into town. Nothing was new about this place. I had their specialty, which was soggy, cold chicken slop on a platter that they jokingly referred to as paprikoush (spelling?). If you're thinking about eating here... don't. Best food around! The restaurant to go when you're tired of burgers, pizza, mexican...same ol'e same ol'e. This place has old time favorites, the best chicken papperkosh around! Oh ya, and the strudel. My boyfriend said it's the best he's ever had. They serve stuffed peppers, goose liver sandwiches (mm mm), all kinds of stuff you don't normally find on other menus! Great Hungarian/Serbian food. I recommend the chicken paprikash and dumplings. I never liked chicken livers until I tried New Eras...they're the best. The Serbian sausages called cevapi are delicious as well. For desert, try the flaky apple strudel and you won't be disappointed. The lounge is a good place to watch a game. read more

Tried New Era today after receiving a few recommendations from well meaning acquaintances. Atmosphere:B Not bad. In fact, it is pretty nice for an East side Akron restaurant. Clean & comfortable place. That said, there was no Hungarian décor or music. It could be any restaurant. Service: Attentive and pleasant. Well done. Side Salad: C- at best. They could have put a little more effort into making a decent salad. I mostly remember iceberg lettuce and a few tomatoes. A weak effort that could be easily improved. Dumplings: B. I enjoyed them, but not outstanding. Grilled Pork Chops: A. They were quite good. I wasn't disappointed. If you are in the mood for great pork chops in a clean and comfortable restaurant, New Era delivers. Overall Comments: The Hungarian American community has a rich history in Northeastern Ohio, and it is great to see restaurants like New Era that offer a taste of the old world cuisine. New Era walks a line of neutrality between Hungarian & American cuisine that lacks enough flair. Culturally, I think the place should lean more to the Hungarian side in both décor and cuisine. Their prices are reasonable, but I think they could do a lot better with the little things like the salads. Akron needs more culturally diverse restaurants, and New Era could be a real gem it the owners put their minds to it. read more

I have been coming to New Era since I was wee little tot, back before they built the new building. It used to be my dad's favorite bar and it turned into my favorite place to get the best strudel ever. Now that they have the new building, it has gone downhill quite a bit. Food isn't as good as I remember it being, even though the strudel will always be my favorite thing. If you're ever here and you want to see the old place, they have a photo album at the cash register where you pay for your mail. The owner Mitch was pretty much like a second dad to me. read more

Been here 3 times ever - once before the new building. The chicken paprikash was awful back then. Recently a bunch of us got together for lunch - one of the diners recommended the hamburger (should have taken his advice). I got the turkey dinner. It was not very good. My sister got fried fish and she liked it. Another diner got the fried chicken and it looked pretty good. About a month later two of us stopped by on a Sunday evening for dinner. We both ordered the fried chicken - it was ok. Her french fries were pretty good, but the worst part was the mashed potatoes with gravy that I ordered. The gravy looked like hot fudge sauce but it tasted even worse - it was really gross. The waitress had 4-5 tables to wait on. She never came back to ask us if everything was ok, nor to ask if we wanted refills on our iced tea. It took forever to get our check - then she became a different person - nice. Amazing how nice a wait staff can be when they are rooting for a tip at the very end. We won't be back. read more
