We were looking for something different and just so happened to find Henry Wahner's! We were immediately seated on a Friday night about 5:30. Our service was extremely friendly and fast!! My husband and I both ordered the pork schnitzel. We about fell over when our entrees were brought out!!! They had the largest amount of schnitzel and spaetzles we've ever had at any German restaurant on our plates!! I'm talking a 1 1/2-2lb schnitzel for $20!! This was also served with a salad and roll. It was cooked to perfection, alas a little different than we've had, in regards to the breading. We did thoroughly enjoy all of it though! Husband and I and three adult of children and they are spouses came to eat dinner there tonight, and will be the last time we come there we paid over $400 for just the food no dessert not even a second drink. The food was just awful. Very disappointed.! I can see why this place is closing in March so I hear it's just a shame you get your family together you go to dinner to supposedly a restaurant with good food well that didn't happen. Been coming here for years, steaks and Prime Rib are excellant best deal anywhere compare the Porterhouse and Prime Rib around $35 each to what you get at chain Steakhouse triple the size here!!! Rolls and salad are fresh , wife gets the lobster tails which are great and price is comparable to high end resturants but a good deal. Worth the drive! This is a fun restaurant that serves amazing hone cooked meal and authentic German dishes. The portions are huge here so go hungry. We were immediately seated once we arrived. They are only open until 7 pm during the week, and we got there a little after 6:15 pm and was still able to eat. The white French dressing is amazing on their salads. I had the Rouladan which are these stuffed beef rolls. So good! By the way...leftovers from here heat up really well the next day. This was DELICIOUS! I ordered the homemade sausage with German potato salad and saurkraut. My husband ordered the Hungarian Goulasch and potato pancakes! They were both tasty and included large portions (enough for two meals if you can resist!) I asked for the Yaeger potato's because they came recommended by a friend but they told my husband that my meal already came with it, they did not. Sad I didn't get to try these elusive potato's. Maybe on the next visit. My husband was not a fan of the rolls. That's ok, the rest of the meal was awesome! read more

Not exactly what I wanted from a German menu, but what they did have was prepared perfectly, served hot, and tasted authentic. I got the wienerschnitzel with spaetzle. Was great. The petite order and I still took some home. Wife got the orange roughy, which was a large order. I tasted it. Fresh and delicious, but not German, but really good. Table next to us had prime rib. It looked MASSIVE!!! Now, BAD PART, no jaeger schnitzel. Not even by request. (Same schnitzel with Demi glacé gravy loaded with mushrooms, my favorite German dish) I'm guessing they are a couple generations away from German ancestors, but still very good. Highly recommend. If you're out and about in NE Ohio and looking for a great steak or prime rib, there is a little hidden gem in Kent, Ohio named Henry Wahner's. It's been there for years. It used to be an old Red Barn Restaurant on Rt. 59. It's not fancy, schmancy! But it doesn't have to be. There food speaks for itself. Not only do they have amazing steaks and prime rib, but their specialty is German food. Schnitzel, pork chops, Jager potatoes, everything is above par. They make their own salad dressings. They only take cash and are closed on Sunday and Monday. They don't open until 4pm, but it's so worth the wait(if you want prime rib, get there early, it sells out fast). Save your money......this place is in it's death throes. I am a local and have been coming here for 30 years, it's always been very good. The quality was top notch and the portions were always ++. Any cut of meat would be delivered to the table hanging off the too small plate, the steaks were huge and perfectly done. Had the Prime Rib this evening and true to form it was Fred Flintstone huge, but it was easily the toughest piece of Prime Rib I have ever eaten and was totally disappointed in the effort required to cut and eat it. I am a big eater and normally finish the whole thing, tonight I exhausted myself (it didn't help that it was 90° in there) just trying to cut it. Took half of it home, my dog will get it with his dinner tomorrow. Our Server did a fine job and was quite pleasant, although I would have loved a 2nd cup of coffee. My other complaint was the seating arrangement. It is a fairly good size place with a main dining room, secondary dining areas, and the Bar. They had the lights turned off in the main (roomy) part of the Restaurant, and had everyone crammed into one of the smaller areas. The AC did not run the entire time we were there, and because it was hot today here, the restaurant was sweltering. We noticed when we got up to leave that the hallway that connects the dinning area with the Bar was 15° cooler and there was nobody in the Bar. Their prices have gone up $5 across the board for entrees, $17 Liver being their cheapest option, and the Prime Rib is now $33.95. This is one of my favorite German steakhouses. It doesn't look like much to the untrained eye, so take that risk and go inside. You won't be disappointed. The portions are huge, the quality of their food (steaks, duck, seafood, etc) is superb and the side dishes are so tasty. You'll have the best service from waitresses that have been there for years, and leave with your belly and heart full. First off everything stated in the previous Yelp reviews is true! Here is my take. What you see is not even close to what it is. Dining area reminds me of a 1970s vintage family restaurant. So much so that I would have left except it was VERY busy. A full house of locals is a good sign to stick it out. Food here seems split between your German Grandma for dinner and a Middle Ages meat fest. Tonight we had German. But we seen good looking steaks the size of chuck roast pouring out of the kitchen. Henry Wahner's has been a mainstay in Kent for decades. Until my recent visit with my son (now a KSU student), the last time I dined @ HW's was when I was a KSU student (several...ahem...decades ago!) HW's is generally known for its steaks, prime rib and German fare. Neither of us being fans of prime rib, my son ordered German (Wiener Schnitzel* w/ spatzle) while I ordered a steak (Top Sirloin w/ Lyonnaise potatoes). We both thought the dinner salads included with our entrees were laughably small and uninspired (a few leafs of lettuce and shredded carrot - more like a garnish than a legitimate salad). Our entrees (hunks of meat, basically) were HUGE, but the "veal"* comprising his schnitzel was weirdly thick (not pounded thin) and tasted closer to chicken (it wasn't). Meanwhile, my medium rare "steak" tasted more like medium well roast beef. His spatzel was good (I mean, it was spatzel), while my Lyonnaise potatoes resembled diner hash browns (not in a good way). The shear size of the meat entrees made the prices very reasonable, but when you don't enjoy your meal, getting lots of it doesn't add more stars to your review. Based on what I saw on the plates served to other diners who ordered the prime rib vs. what we experienced on our plates, you might want to give HW's a try if prime rib is your jam. But if you want good German food or a steak, I'd encourage you to go elsewhere. *After reviewing the menu and our experience, I suspect the "schnitzel" served at HW's is pork schnitzel, not weiner (veal) schnitzel. Similar to prime rib, I'm not a fan (prefer weiner schnitzel), but if you are, you may have a better experience. read more

Meat sweats. Yup, that pretty much says it all. My favorites... smoked pork chops, schnitzel and then the porter house. Have not managed to get to the Prime Rib just yet. All of the meals come with enough food for you to take some home. Sides are pretty good as well. Especially the potato salad and or spetzil. They have fantastic deserts as well, so save space. Good German beers. Only real down sides are if you go in the weekend, you may wait for a long time. No reservations. So they may run out of Prime Rib. read more

Food is terrible. No seasoning, no butter, no love no nothing. It reminds me of hospital food for people with food restrictions. The building is falling apart and when I asked for my food to be removed from the bill because it was gross the owner came over and verbally assaulted me which led to her physically assaulting me because her business seems to be failing. After living in the area for 10+ years, I finally made it over to Henry Wahner's and ABSOLUTELY loved it!!! Hubby and I went at opening. We walked in and there is a bar/lounge area to the right. To the left is the sit down restaurant. The waitress asked how many and let us pick where we wanted to sit. I LOVE choosing my seat! I'm more comfortable that way! Our waitress was kind and patient. She happily explained questionable items on the menu and when asked, even gave us her recommendations. As an appetizer we tried their sauerkraut balls. OMG! I've never tasted homemade and it was delicious!!!! Even hubby, who hates sauerkraut ate them!!! I then ordered the Deutsche Platte, also known as their German Combination Platter. I wanted to try everything and this was the best way to do it. It is a combination plate with sausage, goulash, schnitzel, spatzels and saucekraut. I fell in love! The beef of the Goulash was extremely tender and just enough spice to heat you from the inside. The Schnitzel is my favorite. I ate all of that! The platter is SO HUGE that I took 75% home and had 2 more meals from it! Hubby had the T-Bone steak. All of the other reviewers were not kidding about the size. IF YOU WANT A STEAK THE SIZE OF YOUR FACE, THIS IS WHERE YOU GO!!! Hubby ordered it medium and they go it done right the first go round. He even said it tasted beautiful! The Food was great, I had the Deutschland Platte and it was delicious and filling. I was not be able to finish the plate, the Sausage was melting in the mouth. I highly recommend to go there very hungry otherwise you will feel sad you where not be able to finish your plate. My husband and I stopped here for dinner last Saturday evening after a shopping excursion in Kent. We hadn't eaten all day so we were HUNGRY! The building appears to be an old "Dutch Pantry" replete with a barn shaped wooden sign and horseshoe parking lot. (I have no idea how I channeled Dutch Pantry but it may have something to do with the fact that I'm 50 years old.) The main entry to the restaurant accesses the bar... a "too well lit" bar for my tastes (I like dimly lit, covert drinking spots that encourage heart-to-heart conversations and dreamy memories). All of the waitstaff was busy but seemed happy to be there. We were seated in what I would call the middle dining room, where the waitstaff runs back and forth from the kitchen to the main dining room. We would have preferred a more romantic setting but the entire restaurant is bathed in the "cafeteria/hospital" style lighting... My husband and I ordered Spaetzels with gravy, Smoked Oysters, and Herring in a sour cream sauce for appetizers along with Merlot for me and a Dortmunder for my hubby. Our waitress, Diane, gave me helpful wine advice. The apps were delicious! We even ordered extra Spaetzels with our dinners! I should note that the steaks here literally hang over the plates... I mean we made comparisons to Fred Flintstone going to the drive-thru diner and the rack of ribs tipping over his car. We were trying to look over at a fellow diner's giant steak without seeming rude when his wife pleasantly said, "You can turn around and look if you want!" By the end of the night other diners entering the restaurant were gawking at our prime ribs. I should mention here that Henry Wahner's does not accept credit cards. We knew this ahead of time so there was no problem. Our dinners consisted of salads, mashed potatoes/gravy, spaetzels, and giant prime rib cuts (bone intact). Wow! Everything was delicious!! Of course we took our leftover steaks home with us (the prime rib resulted in lunch and dinner sandwiches for my husband). We did purchase a lemon-blueberry cake with a cream cheese filling to take home (part -breakfast/part-lunch fare later in the week). Overall the restaurant is top-notch, the prices are very reasonable for the quality/abundance of food one receives, the waitstaff is awesome (thumbs-up to Diane), and the fellow patrons are extremely friendly (it seems like a lot of regulars eat here!) The decor and atmosphere leaves much to be desired. The bill may not reflect the dining atmosphere. We would recommend this restaurant to friends and will DEFINITELY return! read more

We had a very nice experience at the restaurant. We arrived with a group of 8 and were sat right away. We had three get the prime rib and none were displeased! I had the Chicken Cordon Bleu and it was delicious. My husband had the fried shrimp and he was very pleased. We had a very picky 8 year old in our group, we asked the kitchen about chicken tenders, and were told they didn't have any but they would be willing to make some by chopping up a breast and breading it for her. When the meal came out she was very happy. I was surprised that I hadn't seen the Yager potatoes mentioned in any earlier reviews. They were the shining star in my opinion. The sides are a bit on the smaller size but I believe that is to leave room for your meat dishes which are all fairly large. Keeping me from giving it a 5th star would be the lack of poultry options, I'd like to have had a few more options despite liking the one I chose. And the price which was a bit steep in my opinion. The top three dinners I would recommend if you aren't feeling steak: Schnitzel and Spatzels- perfectly thin pounded pork, fried crispy golden brown and served with soft puffy spatzels in a succulent gravy. The combo platter- for when you just can't pick! It has some schnitzel and spatzels, some Hungarian goulash (think beef stew), and bratwurst and sauerkraut! Phenomenal! Our food was one of the best meals I have eaten here in the USA. There is something to be said about a mom & pops Restersnt. I decided to stay away from that big of a meal and ordered the T-Bone. Well when the waitress came with my meal I was shocked to see the biggest piece of meat I have ever ordered. Along with it I ordered the hot cheese potatoes. This meal was Gigantic. I have no problem ordering a steak at that cost especially if it lasts me two days. The steak was superb. I was in Streetsboro on business and had a hankering for German cuisine. There were a few choices in Cleveland but this one in Kent was closer to where I was staying. The decor was old fashioned but looked like every German restaurant I've ever visited. I ordered the combination plate so I could sample a little of everything. The Goulasch was excellent. The sausage was tasty but the wiener schnitzel left something to be desired. It was over-breaded and tasted more like chicken fried steak. The sauerkraut could've used more spices and some bacon since it was on the bland side. The spatzel was good and even better with the sauce from the goulasch added to it. A couple of other diners I saw had ordered steaks and the reviews are correct. The steaks are huge and hang over the side of the plate. They had five or six German beers on tap but looking at that nicely-stocked bar they have, I would've expected more. The beer I had didn't have much body to it and tasted almost watered down, not surprising for a college town like Kent but disappointing in a German restaurant. I've gone nearly cashless in my life so their cash-only policy nearly kept me away but I needed cash for another purpose so I got enough to cover my dinner. Placemat was also water wrinkled. Decor looked like a cafeteria at a nursing home. Food came out and my wife's bread plate had remnants from someone's previous meal. This is my "go to" spot when I'm craving a steak that's bigger than my face! Pro-Tip: If you are short on funds, from 4-6 pm Tues.-Fri they run an early bird special where select entrees like top sirloin and German fare are about half off normal price. The last time I went my friend and I were on time for the early bird and got two sirloins, potato side, side salad, and rolls for like 30 bucks. It was crazy delicious and I had mad leftovers! Henry Wahner's really is a hidden gem in Kent. It is definitely old-school but who cares about the decor? I remember my family taking my grandma here like 15+ years ago and it hasn't changed one bit since then. Fortunately, neither has the quality of their food and service. Our servers were super nice, attentive, quick with the refills but not intrusive and the meal was nicely paced. Next time, I plan to get some of the German fare because I saw some schnitzel going to another table that looked Uh-Mazing! Give their Jaeger potato side a try for some creamy, cheesy, jalapeno (just a tinge) goodness. As others have said - be sure you're packing some cash or your check book as they do not take cards. (There is an ATM pretty much just across the street so don't panic if you happen to forget cash but still want some delicious meats.)
