After a rainy day filled with great brewery visits, we looked for somewhere to eat and an Indian food truck popped up with great reviews nearby. Our visit ended up being one of the most memorable stops of the whole trip. This neighborhood grocery story store leans into South Asian food, but with all the usual American staples. The food truck is outside, and all done by one chef. That's to say, the food is made fresh and patience is needed. Thankfully, inside that had a great selection of local and international beer so I bought a 6-pack for us to enjoy while we waited. There were also colorful characters enjoying food and drinks outside who talked with us at length. It was really pleasant to be able to wait comfortably. I have driven by the food cart at New Frontier Market a few times, but haven't tried it. I'd heard good things and have been craving Indian food for a few days so decided to stop in. The staff is so nice and the food was incredible. I got the butter chicken and naan. It was a huge portion, made fresh, and had such good flavor. The chicken was tender, the rice was fluffy, and there was a nice crunchy cucumber, carrot and onion salad that was fresh and tasty. I got it on the mild side of medium, but next time I'll get it a bit spicier. Check out the market while you wait for your food too! I did nothing to it because of all the differt flavors of Anita's perfect touch in the spices alone. Preface this review by saying I drive grubhub. That being said this review is reflective more of the service than the quality of the food. I was yelled at by the restauranteur who was insisting I only take one of the orders the app had assigned me and deliver it across town and come back for the second order and deliver that one. Grubhub is my 2nd job and I can't afford to waste gas. Owner continued to yell at me while I was trying to contact the diners I was delivering for to inform them I couldn't complete their orders. Anita's food stall at the New Frontier Market is THE BOMB. The freshest of fresh Indian food, cooked to order as you wait. We had saag paneer--with both paneer (cheese) and tofu, which provided a good variance in texture as well as protein. The spinach (saag) was fresh and a vibrant green, so much brighter and tastier than the sometimes sludge-like saag in restaurants. Moreover, Anita makes a delicious, super fresh vegetable salsa--red onion, green pepper, cilantro and tomato--to mix into the main dishes. In a classic line from the Tracy-Hepburn movie "Pat and Mike", Tracy's character says about Hepburn's ""Not much meat on her, but what there is, is cherce" (choice). That line came to mind as my hubby and I explored New Frontier Market. Not a huge selection of things here, but what there is, is choice. While I would not call this a "destination market", it is a neighborhood market. We were in the neighborhood and thought we'd stop in because I remembered my Yelp friend Dawn C's kudos for New Frontier. And the sale on Green and Black's chocolate as posted on the sign in the window cemented the need to stop. I'm so glad we did. The first thing we noticed when we entered was the produce section, which seems to always be what first thing that catches our eye in a store. And that's where the Tracy-Hepburn line came to mind. We picked up some lovely organic Minneloa tangelos to take away, along with the chocolate bar. Nicely laid out for such a small store, good selection of "bin items" in the back and a surprisingly nice selection of staples given the limited size of the building. Very friendly people work there. Prices seemed fair and reasonable. The Cornucopia truck pulled up just as we were leaving, making a delivery I think...another good thing! If we lived in the neighborhood, this is a store where we'd do some shopping. And if we happened to be in the neighborhood again, we'd stop in! read more

I drove to several places looking for paneer. Fortunately, they had what I needed. The two gentlemen running the store were friendly, and it had a nice variety of other things that I might find myself needing. One star off for some of the steep prices on things compared to other places. However, it was conveniently located to where I am staying. We LOVE our neighborhood store. It has all we need--good, healthy food and a real market, not a "convenience" market but they sure are convenient for all the folks who live around here. Anita's food cart at NFM is a very welcomed addition to the neighborhood and we find ourselves getting it at least once a week. The food is delicious and more like eating a home cooked meal full of love and care than your standard Indian restaurant fare in Eugene. I love the changing menu and the great selection of vegan and vegetarian options. She prefers her food on the mild side, so if you want a lot of spice, make sure to let her know - "spicy" is more like medium IMO. Also be sure to ask about her chutneys and other options. She is very proud of her breads, so I can't wait until they get the ovens up and running so I can give them a try. read more

New Frontier used to be my favorite part of living in Jefferson Westside. A complete miracle of a store with everything you'd ever need under one small roof. Unfortunately, the new owners marked everything up even more than the already steep prices and moved everything around so it's hard to navigate the store. If it's not broken don't try to fix it as an excuse to price gouge. read more

I used to live right by this place forever ago and I would shop there because it was the closest grocery store to my home. Every time I went, I got the things I wanted. I only stopped going there because I moved and it didn't make sense to go out of my way to visit New Frontier. Conceptually, I wish more of these places existed in neighborhoods everywhere- a market in a residential area that's an ACTUAL market. Not a shit convenience store with mostly inedible, shriveling, dusty food items wedged between the selection of Four Loco and Steel Reserve. What a sadly rare gem. The selections are limited, obviously, because of the size but you really can find just about everything you need, even in bulk (e.g., shampoo, laundry soap, coffee, flour). Plus, you can still get a bag of Doritos if you are craving good-old fashioned shitty convenience store food. Staff is predictably laid-back, but quite personable and not aloof. Since it's impossible for me to NOT say something negative, even in a five-star review, I insist to gripe that they devote way too much precious space to frozen treats. But I'm a nitpicky bitch, so take (and dismiss) this complaint with a coarse grain of salt (also available in bulk, I think). read more

Jeff./Whiteaker neighb for a good long while, and I can honestly say that I did all of my shopping (save the Fred Meyer trips for light bulbs and whatnot) at NFM. I toodled over there every few days, and bought what was fresh to cook for dinner. Living by this market, I never had to go to the farmers market! Seriously, I nearly forgot all about that place downtown. Prices are great. Often I found that the price of, not just produce, but frozen items, juices, and even soaps were cheaper @NF. The prices are particularly good if you utilize one of their coupons. I think that New Frontier is terribly under-rated. Make sure you stop by and take advantage of this real, local grocery sometime soon. read more

I cannot believe I am the 1st to post a review about this wonderful market. Lets see where do I start: They have great coffee and if you bring your own cup it's only a $1.00. Fresh produce is always good. I've never seen bad produce there. They have a really nice beer selection. Also a wonderful wine selections (with occasional wine tasting; I think on the last friday art walk) They also carry local fresh Lamb. They also have a good selection of vegan non-meats too. I love the friendly neighborhood feel of this place, not to mention the reasonable prices. sure, it may look more like a house than a grocery store from the outside, but so do a lot businesses in eugene- ithat's part of the fun! It's a lot smaller than the kiva or whole foods, but can still meet all of your fresh, local, organic produce needs.. and then some! like some others already mentioned, they have a great beer and wine selection, as well as a decent bulk-food section. Another great thing about this place is the staff. they are super friendly and always willing to drop some foodie knowledge about that weird-looking vegetable you've never heard of but are tempted to buy and cook with anyway. for some things, i do still go to safeway for, but i do get all my fruits and veggies here. totally worth it. read more

I had happily shopped at New Frontier Market since the day I set foot in Eugene, 18 years ago. Great place, fine employees. BUT... the other day I stopped in simply to buy a single stamp and a single biscuit for my dog. As I was being rung up the cashier charged me $.75 for a $0.55 stamp. Not knowing he was the new owner I debated the price, saying they had been $0.55 forever. Nearly instantly, he took the stamp and biscuit off the counter and told me to leave the store. I asked him if he was the new owner, he replied yes. The days of the friendly, hippie-ish New Frontier Market are over!! Rude, capitalist new regime in charge. I live nearby and since the Royal Market on 11th shut down, this is my go-to market for last-minute items. I've been here upwards of a dozen times. Their selection on produce and other necessities is fine. Great selection of bulk foods for the size of the place. Beer and wine selection is INSANE. For their selection and location, it could easily be five stars. I'm knocking two stars off, however, for the attitude of the employees. I work in customer service and I know I'm not required to engage in a meaningful conversation with every person; I don't have the time or energy for it but I do treat everyone with respect. Unless I happen to be wearing multiple layers of earth-tone clothing accented with natural gemstone jewelry and no makeup(this is not an exaggeration; this is what I was wearing the day I was engaged in a positive way here), they will not look at you or offer help while shopping. If they do look your way, you will find blank expressions or eyes looking you up and down with lips turned down in distaste with nary a "hello" or "how are you?" to be heard. If you do not appear to fit into the hippie niche, you will feel less than welcome. Good for emergencies. I can't always change out of my mainstream corporate-extortioners uniform before coming here so this isn't my place of choice. Edit: I'm adding a star to this review as one or two of the people working here who were less than friendly towards me are no longer there and people seem much nicer. I go here a few times a week now in an effort to fill my fridge with only local fruits and veggies and not rely on big box stores as much. read more

Being that this isn't my neighborhood market I likely haven't invested the time in New Frontier to learn to appreciate its quirks. Things were tricky to find. Milk options left something to be desired, especially considering my girlfriend has weened me off anything but non-fat milk. So, I had only one non-fat option and it was $5 for a gallon. Milk suddenly more expensive than gas. Blame Obama. I bought 1% milk and, of course, heard about it later. Produce section was quaint but had nice options and good prices. I wanted to support Farm to School and buy the bagged apples but they were bruised to the point of needing a court appointed defender. I opted for some organic apples that were the dirtiest I've ever seen. Organic apparently provides a free pass on washing produce. I visited because I bought a copy of The Oregon Vagabond. Inside the homeless rag I found a coupon for $5 off the purchase of $25. Sweet, right? Less sweet when the hipster chick at the counter thinks it's one of the regular coupons that come in the monthly newsletter for 10% percent off. I couldn't bring myself to say anything. read more
