My first cut by her was wonderful but they got progressively worse. It was like she was using my head as an opportunity to try whatever wild new cut she saw in a hair magazine, which was not appreciated. People infer a lot based upon appearance and Merna's cuts were not reading as professional. My last cut by her had way too much going on - angled towards the front and also angled to one side, bad layers, odd bangs, etc. After laying out $150 with tip for a cut, I expect something that looks as expensive as the cuts were. Leave the Haircuttery-worthy experiments for the mannequin heads - not your clients' heads! Merna's daughter is lovely but some of the other assistants in the shop were rather rude. There was a young lady handling shampoos who was either Latina or Middle Eastern who wasn't always pleasant to deal with. I get that up and coming stylists often have it rough but being rough makes things worse (i.e., unemployment). Ladies, there are plenty of other hairstylists in NYC who will do a much better job on your hair for less money! Avoid this salon.

They really took their time into perfecting my haircut, with paying attention to detail with every step. Inside is typical of what you would expect from a small business hair salon, a bit condensed but did not take away from my experience. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars and not 5 was because the hairdresser kept trying to get me to do hair treatment for $40 more, I politely said no thank you several times but he insisted. This is probably a sales tactic from a hair salon perspective but I've never had to decline so many times in one haircut experience. Regardless, he was nice and respectful and I do recommend him for anything hair related.

I decided to try G's because of its proximity to my job and because it's an Aveda concept salon. I called and made an appointment for the same day. Because they gave me this spot so easily, I assumed they were 'squeezing me in' and I'd have to wait awhile. When I arrived at the salon, I was checked in by a friendly receptionist who asked me to have a seat in the waiting area at the rear of the salon. I was only waiting for maybe 10 minutes or so when I was greeted by my stylist. My stylist, named Summer, seemed genuinely thrilled to be doing my hair. She gushed about how pretty my hair was, and how she has natural hair too. I knew then that this was going to be a wonderful experience. Summer asked me what services I wanted and how I wanted my hair styled. We chatted a good bit while she styled my hair, because she's so bright and bubbly. She gave me advice and politely let me know I'd need a trim soon (no bullying zone). She followed all my wishes to a 'T' (no hot combs on my head, no way, no how). And my hair turned out silky straight and absolutely gorgeous! She even offered to pin curl my hair before I left the salon to maintain my style. Unfortunately, you have to bring your own pins if you want this perk. Oh yeah, I had to subtract a star because I feel $95 (plus tip! But Summer earned that tip!) is a bit steep for a press n' curl. I don't feel any press n' curl is worth that much, however, I will definitely return to G's to be styled by Summer. I may even let her trim my hair next time. I'd also recommend her to any of my natural girls who like to rock it straight from time to time.

They never trimmed more than I asked and my hair always looked great after a blow out. $65 for a blow out is just my speed. My stylists always occupied the last chair in the salon which I think may have something to do with the pricing. Not sure. I always hated the raggedy waiting area couches and wondered why they never made an attempt to make that look better. Reception leaves a lot to be desired. One time I was charged twice for a visit. The charge was done 2 weeks after my initial service so that was very suspect. But when I brought it to their attention they took care of it and I just vowed to use cash going forward. I'm due for a trim now and I called to make an appointment. The man who answered said that Joel didn't work there anymore. I asked if there was someone who has taken his place. He said no and that was it. No attempt to try to make an appointment for me or place me with another stylist.

My ends were choppy not straight. The techniques she used on my ends weren't proper, it was something my mom could've done for me. She didn't take her time to do my hair even though there wasn't a single customer she needed to attend. She blow dryer my hair but it was super hot and it scalded parts of my head. After I went back home, I realized that the bob wasn't even at all, one side was longer than the other. Never ever going back here again. My aunt in law ended up fixing my hair and I ended up fixing my hair again.

Appointment Time: She was on time and ready. No other clients waiting. No loud waiting area. Location: location is perfect. at least for me. The studio is now in midtown Manhattan on 59th street conveniently close to the express lines and all the shops. Salon: it's small but mighty. It has all the premium products and tools. Rather than a steamer she used a mister and my curls came alive no they really came ALIVE after 30mins under there. It feels like a private session and I like the exclusive one on one time. Stylist experience: Colette is so knowledgeable since she is so experienced. She is a wonderful teacher - clear and concise. She educated me on the products she used, the products I should be using, and how to use them. Most if not all the product are conveniently linked on the booking site. I was able to shop and purchase them instantly. The transparency was REAL, it helps me to trust that my hair is in good hands. Sometime you never know what stylist use in your hair that could be damaging. Not her she will let you know and remind you. Also, Colette is genuinely real no fluff she doesn't sugar coat and I love that. She's NOT going to just tell you what you want to hear. They gave me energy like my hair was a problem. I spent a total of 5 and a half hours here!!! left with a mediocre two strand twists and flaky hair (didn't notice the flakes until I was home). It's sad because my first visit was the exact opposite. Mind you I was the first appointment on a weekday morning. No one was there when I came but the stylist and I. I just got a few cornrows. Maybe that's why my service was great the first time around. My second and last visit was awful. I left a very thorough review on google. Didn't remember how annoyed I was about the experience, until I realized how long my google review was. I contemplated not doing the review because it's a black business, but I want to make sure that people with hair similar to mine no what they're in for. Update: Stacey spare me the passive aggression and lies. These photos were taken one day after my November appointment. After 5hrs of being at Curl and Co. the look and quality of my hair is beyond unacceptable. You didn't cancel with me, you made a "speech" saying that I really needed my ends trimmed or you couldn't do my hair AFTER that day. I was going to do it but at the last minute opted out because I didn't trust your judgement. I just wanted my two strands so that's what I stayed for. I was never coming back to your salon after that day, and I didn't. I was more than respectful, I even paid you extra because it took you so long. If you know that you can't work with 4c hair, please save people their money and time and not be greedy. If you're unable because of your lack of skill, retain your integrity and just tell the client that you don't know how to do what they're asking of you.
