The Owner Misinterpreted my instructions and made Incorrect Assumptions

The Foreman was incapable of Following Directions and Leading

"They trimmed up to 20 feet. Looks awful." (property management board member) "That tree trimming is not good." (a professional tree trimmer) Why are these people expressing negative opinions about New Life Tree's (NLT) work trimming our fir trees? A) The NLT Owner, Duane, Misinterpreted my instructions and made Incorrect Assumptions B) The NLT Foreman was incapable of Following Directions, Giving Directions and Leading Below are the Details - Owner Misinterpreted instructions and made Incorrect Assumptions Duane, the owner, showed up shortly after his crew of approximately ten men arrived. I carefully explained that I wanted our fir trees trimmed so the branches would be ten feet above the ground. He interpreted that to mean we wanted the branches trimmed ten feet higher than their current level, which he thought was too high. Did he ask for clarification? NO! Instead he just said "Okay", and then later told his crew to cut the branches right at the trunk three to five feet above their existing height. Inexplicably, some of his crew trimmed our branches more than nine feet higher! The result: the lower parts of our fir trees are completely bare, in some cases close to twenty feet above the ground! Another board member asked in exasperation, "Why did they trim the trees so high?!" - The Foreman was Incapable of Following Directions, Giving Directions and Leading The next day I tried to correct the above mistake with the few remaining untrimmed fir trees at the back of the property. I told the Foreman to trim branches up to ten feet or three meters off the ground. He nodded and said okay, then started cutting a branch as high as he could reach - about 17 feet up! Later that day I spent ten minutes explaining I wanted certain fir trees trimmed five feet from the buildings, as measured both horizontally and vertically. "Think of it like a five foot stick", I explained, "if one end of the stick is touching the building and the other can touch the branches, trim to that point BUT NO FURTHER." The Foreman then talked to a young crewmember, relaying the instructions in Spanish. (both men could communicate with me in English). I asked them if they had any questions; they said no. I stated if anything came up or they needed any clarification to please see me. When I came outside 90 minutes later, I could not believe my eyes. On several of our fir trees, they cut branches off one side up to sixty feet in height, far above the roofs of our buildings. I was shocked! When I demanded an answer from the Foreman, he blamed his counterpart, saying the younger coworker thought the trees should be trimmed well above the buildings. "Why didn't you come get me to clarify my instructions!!" I demanded. He just shrugged. Now those fir trees look imbalanced, noticeably sheared off one side and naturally spread out on the other. I do agree with the board president on this point: they charge reasonable rates and did a decent job trimming / thinning our deciduous (leafy) trees. However, I never want to hire New Life Tree again; the pain of seeing the branches of our majestic 35 year old fir trees chopped beyond our specifications is too much.

Duane replied very quick to a Yelp message. We were able to schedule an in-person consult quickly. The prices are very competitive. Duane was right on time and assessed the tree that needed to be removed. He asked about other trees on the property and we decided a few palms would need to be trimmed as well. With the extra service added, Duane gave me a deal for all the extra work I added. Scheduling was easy. Duane communicated with me via text (which I prefer). The tree removal was done quickly and completed in 2 days. The stump grinding was completed at another date. Payment was required until everything was completed. Every member of the crew was nice and friendly and respectful. They looked like professions high in the trees and were tied off (safety!!). I would recommend checking your city tree removal permit process as I required one but Duane wasn't not aware of that. That process delayed the start of service by about 2 weeks but Duane followed up and made sure we were on track.

    Diseased Cypress being removed!

I reached out to 8 different companies and New Life Tree had a very competitive quote. We had a diseased Cypress that was touching the power lines and encroaching onto our roof. Also located next to an iron fence which made it trickier to remove. The crew came out and took it away in about 4-5 hours. You pay by check after the job is completely done. Crew cleaned up afterwards. There will still be some minimal debris, but it looked very clean. We get so much more sunlight into our living space now! Tips: 1. If you live in an urban area try to reserve parking. The crew brings a truck and a wood chipper. They also need a space to toss the branches before they go into the chipper. 4-5 car lengths if possible. 2. Tell your neighbors. Just a courtesy. The chipper is loud and the crew may need to park near or on their driveway. 3. Have some cold drinks on hand! It was during a heat wave so we had some ice cold water bottles and oranges out for the crew. 4. Pay the money to grind the stump. Not only will it look better, but it kills the roots. Stump grinding will happen 1-3 days after the tree is removed.

I had what I thought was a pretty daunting job but Duane took a look at my project and gave me a very fair quote. Once I obtained the tree permits from WC, he was able to start within 2-3 days. Duane and crew were very professional. They showed up on time and began working. They took down 7 trees in about 3 days. The wore masks whenever they interacted with us. They did a good job removing debris and kept the disturbance to the neighbors at a minimum.

Leaves and yard debris not swept or blown off walkways
    Inger S.

I apologize for a ridiculously long review but I want to be as fair and accurate as possible. Anyway...PROS: got back to me quickly, showed up on time, went over the job step by step and confirmed expectations. The yard was a jungle and the crew worked hard and got a lot done. (It should be noted they do tree *trimming* which should not be confused with tree *pruning*) CONS: Lots of dead wood left behind, both in the trees and on the ground. I hired them to do a full yard clean up. Weed removal, trees and shrubs trimmed and dead wood cut off. I was very clear that with the exception of 1 raggedy looking evergreen out front I did not want any trees or shrubs removed, only trimmed/cut back. Please see the "after" pics posted with this review showing areas still choked with weeds, plants overgrown onto walkways not cut back, dead wood left on the ground, walkways not blown off or swept, trees with a lot of dead limbs not removed - including one that scapes against house when it's windy. The raggedy evergreen was untouched, **but a ficus tree that had started out as a houseplant decades ago, relocated outside when it got too big, and had been happily living its life in the same spot since the early 2000s was slaughtered - cut off where the trunk met the Earth. I literally burst into tears as soon as I saw it. The tree did have a lot of dead wood on it, but it also had new growth with green leaves. It was NOT dead, which is actually irrelevant anyway since there were clear instructions not to cut it down. Right next to the ficus there were ferns overgrown onto the walkway that obviously needed to be cut back but they were not touched. I was and still am really upset about this but I can see it is spilled milk, so moving on. I texted Duane to ask when they'd be back to finish the job. If you looked at the pics you can probably imagine my surprise when I got his reply of "what else is left?" Wait ...what?!?? Seriously? I was more than a wee bit taken aback. He came over so I could show him "what else was left" and he opposed only one of the things I pointed out. He also admitted they f@$*'d up cutting down the ficus tree. When I was done, he says to me: "what can I do to make this right and make you happy? Would you like us to come back and do more work or i can take some off the bill and you pay me less than what we agreed upon for the yard as is. IT'S UP TO YOU" I replied I would like them to finish the job, but then GET THIS! He obviously didn't expect me to pick door #1 (I was pretty upset about the ficus tree) and when I did he starts dialing it back, acts like he didn't hear me and starts trying to negotiate the bill. I'm like "wait, so you aren't going to come back and finish the job?" Nope (although he wouldn't look at me and say it, just ignored me and kept talking about the bill.). What a ******.

New Life has cut a number of trees for us at our home, vacation home and business. Pricing is fair, team is very good.
