I have been coming here for years, typically for after work drinks with colleagues and something to nosh on, and yesterday I had a beer lunch - with food, but I had two pints of Stella to wash it down. A ranch lovers MUST! It's my favorite after work bar for a quick drink and delicious dinner, but when I discovered their ranch is made in-house from SCRATCH I just new this place was special. Surprisingly really good food and decent drinks! And they're reasonably priced which makes it the perfect place to meet up after work with friends. Don't expect this to be some hip and trendy bar. This is a no frills, you get what you see, type of place. The inside is small and they offer a row of outdoor seating. The best part--it's never overly packed, just right. If you're meeting up, make sure to order the cheese curds and chicken buffalo dip. Both were excellent and were gone within seconds. Trivia is so much fun! They have daily specials and the one for Sunday night trivia is happy hour wings and sliders. The wings are ginormous! When they say jumbo wings they weren't kidding around. I expected 8 wings so go super quickly but each one was probably the size of 3 normal wings. I also ordered pretzels and the ahi tuna salad, both of which were pretty good! I love trivia, and would've given this more stars but everything just seemed to take such a long time! Trivia lasted for over 2 hours when it could've taken 1 hour. Also it seemed like they only had one waitress on staff that night and she was super busy running around trying to take care of everything that all our orders and bill paying took forever. read more

I haven't had a chance to dine in yet, but both times I have ordered carry-out from here I've been impressed by the quality of the food, the portion sizes, and the overall service. In my experience, the waitstaff/bartenders are friendly and professional, and the kitchen staff do a great job of preparing orders quickly without skimping on quality. For what I assumed was just your typical bar and grill, New Line has a phenomenal goat cheese and pear salad. The presentation is pretty, but even better are the crispy goat cheese medallions paired with fresh pear slices and a sweet and tangy vinaigrette. I have been a vegetarian for almost 7 years, so I'm picky about salads, but I seriously adore this one. I've ordered it both times! Also incredibly delicious is their mac n cheese. I have also ordered it both times I've carried out because it's that good. Again, I wasn't expecting a neighborhood bar to have great pasta dishes, but you can tell their mac is freshly made. It goes beyond the basic with a sort of white cheese sauce and green onion + bread crumb topping. The portion is huge (splittable between 2-4 people - both times my boyfriend and I have ordered it we've had leftovers), and it's not overly cheesy or buttery. I also want to mention that their tots are super crispy - they remind me of Sonic's in the best way - and don't taste frozen or greasy like bar tots sometimes do. I have also had their soft pretzel appetizer with mustard and cheese and it was equally as fresh-tasting. The mustard they use is a nice grainy dijon, and the cheese was actual cheese, not the neon stuff you get on nachos. I cannot speak to how good any of the meat dishes are, as I'm a vegetarian, but the burger my boyfriend ordered from New Line most recently looked tempting. I also cannot attest to the ambiance inside the restaurant or how it is for a gameday outing, since I have only ordered carry-out. I hope to change that soon. This review is way longer than I intended, but I've really enjoyed my experiences at New Line so far and hope it sticks around! Nice dimly lot bar under the el train. We sat at the bar and had a couple drinks while warming up and figuring out where we were going next. The bartenders were friendly, and the patrons were sociable. The bathrooms were well maintained. Nice hangout or a good place to slip into for a quick drink. read more

Avoid this place for food! They are clearly not using proper kitchen sanitation techniques. I ate about 2 full tacos and thought the beer was messing with my appetite ... a few hours later I didn't feel well and (again) blamed it on the beers. Around midnight or so I felt extremely restless, chills, then hot, upset stomach. I eventually became violently ill and vomited. Disclaimer: the following may be gross to some people. While vomiting I pulled a small piece of raw, marinated steak from the bowl. I'm not a doctor but I know I shouldn't still have undigested food in my stomach 12 hours later. I know it was raw marinated steak because I smashed it in my fingers and smelled it. This place is pretty cool. Nice and spacious for a happy hour work gathering, but keep in mind, due to the decent location (near CTA and Metra, and well.... in downtown) this place gets packed quick. They have daily specials which was pretty cool. I came here on a Thursday and they had fish tacos. I ended up ordering the grilled tilapia fish tacos and a shrimp taco. Both were really good, but I really liked how the grilled tilapia was seasoned, and there was no overwhelming fish taste, if that makes sense. Waitstaff was pretty good, fast, and attentive. Food came out quick. BATHROOM REVIEW: Located way in the back, the bathroom was surprisingly very clean. There are a couple of urinals and stalls and just overall, it was clean bathroom for a bar, or for anything. Well-lit, and comfortable, this bathroom is one of the better ones I've found at a bar. Ok so I have so far been to 6 different restaurants/bar locations. 1 meal (light meal), 1 drink, whilst giving 1 review (online per location) prioritizing 4 catagoies. Convenience, cleanliness, customer service, and pricing. So far all food was great, but By far customer service was key at New Line. Food was perfect, You feel like home no matter where you're from. My bartender at this time was A man Younger than I (Louise) and he couldn't have been any more helpful in everything he did. This is extremely close to my home and hence, I'm in there 1-2 nights per week. For a bar, I feel the food is above average and I've never had a bad experience with any of the staff. In fact, as soon as I walk in the door, they usually begin preparing my 1st round (Jimmy John's fast if you ask me). It's not quite as good as Gibson's Italia (around the corner) but I'd rather have a $30 tab vs. $130 tab. The only downside is the place is a bit too dark due to the higher small windows. I've been a regular for about two years; to clarify; I go there because I live close by and it's a decent bar to eat when no better plans come up. I only like their tacos and burgers, A+; everything else is too greasy for my taste. The service is ok, while the bartender does a decent job, I always have to ask for silverware, napkins, and they never take the dirty plates afterward until, of course, you ask for it. I always eat at the bar, and the bartender looks very busy, she is the only one for the entire place. Thus, I am a little more patient even though she doesn't have the best attitude or customer service skills. I'm not sure to either blame her or management, but most likely management for lack of training. After putting up with mediocre service, I finally stopped going there; the final issue was that I order a silver Don Julio tequila neat. She brought it on the rocks, with plenty of ice. I didn't notice after a few minutes. When I explained her mistake, she just took the drink and poured it through a strainer in a clean glass. I ended up with a full glass, 1/4 tequila, 3/4 water. We happened by this place for a dinner last night after a convention with 10 of my coworkers. We were pleasantly surprised. The service was the best we have had since arriving in Chicago for the Magnet convention. Ryann our server was very welcoming, attentive and upbeat, making for a wonderful time. Visited over the weekend with my boyfriend. We were looking for a place to grab a drink after a long day of walking around the city. It was Sunday so not a lot of places were opened which was the main factor as to why we stopped in here. When we walked in there was no host so we sat our selves. While we were settling in a man came over (maybe the GM or owner) to give us menus. We looked over the menu, picked out what we wanted, and waited. And waited and waited for someone to come back to take our orders. I noticed there were only two employees on the floor, the bartender and the man who gave us the menus who was taking care of delivering food and taking orders from the other half of the restaurant. My boyfriend went up to the bar to order and it took way too long for the bartender to come over. She looked at his several times and didn't acknowledge him or tell him it would be just a minute. Several minutes go by and he is finally able to order. While my boyfriend was holding his beer and signing the receipt a man came back in from outside and pushed my boyfriend out of the way to get back into his seat at the bar. Resulting in my boyfriend spilling his beer and that man did not care in the least. We were going to order food but after the fiasco we went through to order drinks we reconsidered. Gotta to love a new place to go in the "neighborhood". Okay. So the New Line Tavern is not in my neighborhood- but a friend's, but that's okay since now I get to see him AND have a drink in this refurbished space. The New Line is located in the old Beaux Arts style building which used to be the powerhouse for the Chicago Railroad. Being an old refurbished space lover- I like that the bar kept the original tile window surrounds intact- the chips and imperfections adding interest to the space along with the tin relief ceiling tiles. The walls hold photos of the original building use which was to power the train from Chicago to Milwaukee that was then called the "New Line"- thus the name. The bar runs the length of the room and there are tables and chairs scattered about. We sat at the bar so service was quite good (they even sent someone out to a nearby 7-11 to get more Red Bull for my friend's drink) and the drinks were strong and quick to be refilled. And if you are looking to watch your favorite game- there are plenty of TV's around. We ordered some food for snacking- wanted to try the two kinds of wings that they tout- their namesake "New Line Tavern wings" and a more expected deep fried hot wing. Funny. If I was going to put my name to something- it would be the best thing in the house. And take it from me- the New Line Tavern Wings are nothing to write about. Even the sauce that they served with them was rather bland. Stick with the tried and true. Hot wings with blue cheese and celery- you can't go wrong there! Street parking is easy in this area. Bartenders are engaging and social-able (thanks Evan) and the prices are reasonable. Glad to know that the words "New Line" are back in today's nomenclature with a new usage. For the New Line tavern's goal is the same as it's namesake. Making people happy. And isn't that what is has always been about? read more

The best part about New Line is the price tag. Since New Line's a bit outside the loop, the price drops quite substantially. Beers suddenly hover around $5-$6, appetizers are available for under $10. It's a great option for some happy hour drinks for that reason. Of the apps, I really liked the buffalo chicken dip, although be warned, it is extremely hot, scolding hot. But the chicken was good and it wasn't too full of cream cheese. I'd get it again. Also got the pretzel bread sticks that everyone else raves about. They were good, really just pretzel bread with some cheese dip (which wasn't too great). The pretzel twist had more than just salty flavor. Overall, if you're looking for a cheap happy hour, New Line's a good option. read more

I actually like the menu here. Living in the neighborhood for a year, this was my spot for a local quick bite. Unfortunately, my time here ended tonight. Bar service sucks. The final straw went approximately as follows: Walk in and sit down at the half empty bar. Wait to get acknowledged for 10 minutes bc the bartender was talking to her friends. Finally comes up to me and just stares. I say I'll take a drink and some food, she says "oh you're not the guy who was just here?" Nope. Order a burger and a beer. As basic as it gets. 30 minutes go by. Again, zero acknowledgement. Not even another beer. 3 people who came in after me order and get their food. Bartender gone for last 10 minutes. Ask the bar back if my order got lost. He doesn't know. Puts my order in again. 5 minutes later, bartender is back, serves other people. I flag her down as she comes by. "Are you good?" Just wondering what happened to my burger. "Oh, so you're good for now?" OK. Where's my food? "It's coming soon. Is there a problem?" Well, it's been 40 minutes and no food. "If you had a problem you should have said something." That's what I'm doing right now, you've been MIA for 10 minutes. "No I haven't I've been serving these people." No, you were in back for 10 minutes and then ignored me when you came back out. "You should have said something." That's literally what I'm doing, right now. The first chance I got. I come here regularly and have had nothing but a good time here. Whether it's 10:02am on St. Patty's or 1:39am on a night a girl has broke my heart, the vibes at this place are always amazing. This is my go to spot for Tinder dates given the diversity of the menu (and affordability). Staff is very good in the traditional sense (attentive, fast, and knowledgeable) but also have that old school Cheers vibe where they remember your name, your drink, and your ex girlfriend's name. I would give this meal 3 stars, however my husband enjoyed his meal a lot so I'm bumping my review up a star. We came in on a Saturday morning for brunch. The place was nearly empty, except for two other patrons at the bar. We sat at a high top that had great views of the various sports games. Prices were pretty reasonable for west loop as well. Our waitress was kind and attentive. I ordered a skillet and the hubby got a breakfast burrito. He throughly enjoyed his burrito that came with a side of fruit. My skillet, on the other hand, was below average. I asked for hash browns, and my potato was definitely a mashed up tater tot. Don't get me wrong, I like tater tots. But it didn't work in the skillet. I also ordered my eggs over easy with wheat toast on he side. The eggs came out over hard and the toast was extremely brittle. Oddly enough, the onions in his dish were not mixed into my hash brown tater tots, but they were put On top of the eggs. This was odd. Overall this skillet was not properly executed which was a bummer for myself. It's close and conveniently located, so we might be back to try out lunch or dinner. These are some pros I have with this great place, firstly my amazing waiter such a amazing person, he makes me want to go back!, sadly I didn't ask for his name, but if you were to go, you want to look for a African American man with glasses who is very funny and patient, likes to hum and has puffy hair, also says "no one saw that" when we dropped something. Pricing is decent, though I think there's not very high value there (it could have to do with the fact that there's not a ton around that is open late).
