The honey pecan shrimp is the best single dish in West Seattle. Period. Hubby and I also enjoyed the 21-and-over entry requirement so we didn't have to cater to our kiddos. We enjoyed the spicy mushrooms and potstickers (which also had a surprising amount of heat.) also preserves the General Tsao chicken upon suggestion from the staff, and were thrilled we did. I almost don't want to tell you how good it is, so it doesn't become too popular :) this place is legit, the food is so good, not your regular Chinese place where the vegetables can be soggy and blegh. If I wasn't 8 months pregnant, I probably would have gotten 2 cocktails they sounded so good. Excellent date night place, great atmosphere, dark and moody and everything I was hoping it would be. You walk in and no one welcomes you. There's apparently a ticket system to get seated? The wait staff last night was beyond rude, lots of eye rolls from our waitress (maybe she was having a rough day, but based on other reviewers, that's every day). Found a seat, ordered some food (again, rude even while taking an order). 3 dishes and a beer. 2 dishes came out fairly quickly and we waited for the 3rd. About 20-25 minutes later, asked for the 3rd and she said "oh, I only saw 2 items checked" All the food - fat noodles, beans, shrimp were good but very salty. The whole disposable situation is not cute - can we just get regular plates? The jukebox is great! I'd come back for that and the mostly mediocre (but delicious) food. My advice: don't go! I don't live in West Seattle. Last night, I made a mistake of being bought into the hype. Their service sucks more than our current president. We walked in. Nobody welcomed us and said hi. The place is divided into two parts, and the front part was practically empty. We walked further into the bar/back area. Packed, but we got lucky and found an empty table. We waited and waited some more. Nobody brought us water and took our order. We were so hungry. Finally, the bartender came to our table. He reminded me of Javier Bardem from No Country for Old Men. He did not smile, and you could tell that he was hating his job. I would too. We ordered a bunch of dishes. Nothing earth shattering. Their honey pecan prawns were my favorite but we all know you cannot really mess up honey pecan prawns. It is fried and has candied pecans. Yup, impossible. Their food was decent, but not a whole lot better than what I could get in China Town. My least favorite was their numbing beef. DO NOT ORDER THIS DISH. I am Korean and can handle spicy food. It was too salty. And, it tasted funky. It was not edible. We literally had one bite and gave it back, yet they still charged us for their inedible dish. Terrible service and ok food. I love New Luck Toy. The vibe of this place is so fun. I love the red lanterns on the ceiling. I could drink 10 of their frozen pina coladas. So yummy and not overly sweet. Driving by, one would take one look at this place and just assume "stereotypical chinese restaurant for white folks" I mean, the bright neon lettering of New Luck Toy - in an unmistakenable chinese font, shady entrance door way... walking inside is like a scene from Rush Hour, I was just waiting for Jackie Chan or Chris Tucker to pop out and scare me. The place inside is small, i'm talking like 16 people in the front dining area and maybe another 16 outback in the bar area. The ceiling is packed with red hanging lanterns, while the right upper wall is lined with lucky waiving cats and below is the kitchen window and a skeeball machine. The narrow hallway that seats maybe 16 people leads to a small room where you can find the restrooms and a pinball machine. Then you reach the bar area where you can find small tables in a dimly lit room with hip hop music playing over the speakers. All in true hole in the wall chinese fashion. But what's not so stereotypical, it's actually owned, designed, and menu prepped by an Ethiopean. Shocking right? What was more to my surprise how well priced and good the food was! My friends and I were hungry so we ordered nearly half the menu: Chow Fun Mian (yes, like maaang) - i've had a lot of chow fun before and has always just left the impression of "i'm eating chinese food" but this one... i honestly can't say what pulled it all together for me, but it was well rounded in flavor and it tasted clean and delicious. easily my favorite on the list. Salt and Pepper Prawns - head on. beautifully battered and fried, topped with a delicious absurd amount of spicy jalapenos. Great crunch and flavor in every bite. Salt n Pepper spare ribs - well cooked prepped, fall off the bone in every bite, just a bit too salty for my taste. Go's great with some rice and their in-house made chili oil. Numbing Beef - probably my least favorite, only because I'm not a fan of that Szechuan peppercorn taste, however the beef itself was cooked very nicely and not chewy. Honey Pecans Shrimp - yes pecans. which is awesome because I've always loved this dish growing up and it's just a staple when doing family style, except I never liked walnuts but I do love me some pecans! This dish wasn't blow me away good but it holds itself among any honey walnut prawn dish. General Oh Tso Good chicken - this is probably the whitest thing any one can order at any chinese restaurant. but because I was just as entertained by the name as I was when I first heard about "moons over my hammy" (at denny's) I had to get it. It didn't disappoint. Good batter to chicken ratio, nice and saucy and full of flavor, good chunkys of chicken. Pork Dumplings - juicy. fatty. soy saucy. goodness. Such a clean non greasy flavor with these guys. Can't go wrong with them! Is it the best chinese food ever? I'll be honest... naw. BUT for a west seattle get away to a small quaint and cute water hole with some friends, this is the spot to hang out. I heard it gets rather hectic where people will wait for hours to try it - I wouldn't say I'd wait that long only because how hangry I can get but this spot is definitely worth a shot! Good food isn't all that good until you can pair it with a nice cold beer (we chose the classic chinese Tsing-Tao) and of course awesome service provided by Colleen, who is about as sweet and knowledgeable as any server I've ever met! The service...ugh. The food is fine, not great and not bad. Expect to wait as it's a small place. Not really setup for a crowd and not all that comfortable if you don't have a seat. Drinks are average. Servers and bartenders really don't pretend at all to have any time to answer any questions and I get the impression management doesn't care. I was here on a Friday of their opening weekend night and it was pretty packed. With it being very small, there were no seats so we gathered around the already crowded bar area. The atmosphere has a cool divy hipster vibe even though it is a Chinese restaurant. I didn't order food, but I did order the drink that comes in a panda - mango something, but tasted like a margarita to me. To be perfectly honesty, I only came here for the panda drink. What a terrible experience I had tonight. I've been to New Luck Toy so many times and loved it. Never have I had service like this. I can't imagine the bartender was sober. Upon placing my food order he mocked my name to our neighboring patron, calling it strange... (my name is Madison). The service was terrible throughout the meal and then the bill came. This place is amazing! Such a hole in the wall. It's a small, intimate setting and not too big and crazy inside. I love the atmosphere and they even have a ski ball machine and a room you can reserve for karaoke :) The food is AMAZING and such a great price. My favorite were these fried garlic wings (I forget the name), the salt and pepper spare ribs, and the shrimp and pork fat dumplings in that specific order. I would skip the general tso chicken, nothing too great about it but it was still alright, as well as the pickled cucumbers. As for the drinks, I loved all of them! Great prices too for nice cocktails. We got about 6 different food items on the menu and 8 drinks and only spent $148 on a weekend night. I would 100% recommend this place to anyone! read more

The owner allowed domestic violence dispute in the center of the restaurant last night. Man and woman physically fighting, couldn't figure out why no one else helped or did anything! The owner tried to explain they were married, and I explained that doesn't matter when a man and woman are pummeling each other. She would not call the police and no one who worked there (or otherwise) stepped in to help. The bartender did nothing. Just said it was her family friend- which is the ONLY reason the police weren't called. It was the Twilight Zone in there. I've never seen no one act in a physical fight-- ESPECIALLY not the owner or workers. I'm horrified that they allow and condone domestic violence. BEWARE. read more

The outside and name made me expect the inside to be tacky but it was pretty nice inside. Very nice place to have a light dinner. The shrimp was good. Good price. Waitress was very nice. Bartender was great... and then when the clock hit 01:52 he turned into THE WORST SERVER I EVER HAD. He served us a beer at 01:50 and at 01:54 he said "2 minutes" looking at the clock I jokingly said "you mean 6?" His response was "No, 2. It's Friday. Don't get 'legal' on me. 2 minutes" Uhmmm.... also... The bill came and instead of splitting tabs between me, a friend, and TOTAL STRANGER WE JUST MET he ran the whole tab on the stranger. What was a $9 tab for him turned into a $45 tab. When we questioned it the bartender said, "oh he's a good guy, he's got it" when THEY DO NOT KNOW EACH OTHER. I have heard that the service is slow and maybe inattentive- I've seen that, I own it, but it's all kind of apart of the charm. I heard that they created a bar for industry folks and I can see that vibe here- it's delicious drinks and even better food. I love every single slushee and haven't met a dish I didn't like though I tend to have to have the fried rice- the best for miles and miles. We stopped by recently after having New Luck Toy recommended by a friend. Very friendly and diligent staff, cool ambiance, and most importantly--amazing food. Of the several plates we tried, the Honey Pecan Prawns, the "General Oh Tso Good Fried Chicken," and the NLT Fried Rice were our favorites but every dish was amazing. Each dish is probably good for about one person but if you are trying to taste different things, the "Dishes with White Rice" could adequately serve two people. Try the Spicy Pickled Cucumbers as well for an especially different but delicious appetizer. We hear the restaurant can get a little hectic on the weekends but on the Tuesday we went, there was plenty of seating and a quick turn around from when we ordered to when we received our food. read more

Grabbed an early dinner here on Thursday. Was super excited to finally try this place, but was very disappointed in the food. I got a passion fruit cocktail and the ice cubes were so big and filled to the top that it was too hard to take a drink of it. Not very good. Serve with a straw or less ice. I ordered the chinese spaghetti bowl. The noodles were so over cooked and the meat sauce really didn't have a lot of flavor. My boyfriend got the general oh tso good fried chicken. Would in no way consider this the traditional general tso's but it was good. Crispy juicy chicken. Our waitress never said hi to us or asked us if we had questions, explained anything to us. I just moved to W. Seattle and I've been told by many ppl that I need to go to New Luck Toy. Today was my second and last time going to this place. The food is white ppl Chinese food and it's not good. The ribs were dry and gross. I'm positive the shrimp is taken out of a bag, breaded and thrown in a pan to fry. They don't remove the skin or clean it. Why would you bread and fry shrimp with the skin on? Who is eating that? Normally, you flavor the part that you are going to be eating. So you gotta rip all the flavored breading off the shrimp and eat the plain shrimp. I got the spicy cucumbers I've gotten both times. They are the ONLY item that I like. The drinks are ok. They are good enough. Also, the service is weak. They bring your food and then disappear. It wasn't until we were done that I was asked if I wanted another drink. Ew. Earn your tips, yo! read more

It is Americanized Chinese cuisine from a dive bar setting that is great! Yes, you are not getting healthy fresh Chinese food--you're getting bar food that is fabulous. Looking at it from the outside can be slightly intimidating but once you're inside the decor of waving cats and tiki bar vibe is welcoming.... not to mention a personal karaoke room! THE FOOD: Yes, please. this food is great! The four of us ordered the green beans that were to die for, they also sampled a huge variety of food and everything we got was excellent. I can't recommend one over the others because it was all super tasty. THE PLACE: okay, so I said it was loud, terribly terribly loud. Outside of this it's super cute inside with kitschy lights, comfy booths and is just a fun environment. I'd have rated this much higher if it weren't so loud. I know, I know we got it lady it's loud what else. There are games to play. TIP: Know you are going to wait here, especially on the weekend. When you come in, go straight back to the bar and sign in on the sign in list on the wall and grab a number. That is how you get seated. The food is so good, if you are okay with REALLY loud places (if they turned the music down, it would be fine but they won't) the food is so super good it's worth it. Pros- Cool lighting, hip vibe, and friendly staff. Cons- Seating is a nightmare:. There is no waitlist and you have to stand and stare at people eating waiting to pounce when they leave. Meanwhile other customers arrive and drift between the two rooms of seating. The idea of who's been waiting the longest is ambiguous as seating anarchy kicks in. Food is amazing. Do yourself a favor and order the honey pecan pawns....your life will never be the same again. Then order the crispy fried chicken and you'll die happy. Bring a couple dollars to play skeeball and pinball to kill some time, as the bar is small and music is loud, not much else in the nearby, and with the number system, you're kind of trapped at the restaurant. Portions are big! We got the prawns, fried rice, dumplings, and General Tsao's chicken, for the 2 of us, and we walked out with enough leftovers for lunch the next day. The prawns were the best and plenty to share. The fried rice, although heavy on the bean sprouts were my 2nd favorite. Dumplings were good too, but ended up a little disappointed with the chicken, as the sauce seemed a little bland compared to the other dishes. I have been here a couple times and enjoy it a lot. The first thing you will notice is that it looks like a divey Chinese restaurant on the outside but, on the inside it is funhouse of Asian cliché. I love the drinks here that use Pacific flavor with traditional cocktails and food that is reimagined Chinese dive staples. I really love the fried long beans and General chicken the most. The only thing I don't like is the paper plates with everything which makes it hard to eat and cheapens the experience a smidge. read more

What a great find!! Went to happy hour with some friends. We had heard there could a wait to get in. We timed it just right, walked in and got a table for four, boom! Server was right there, took the drink order, showed us how the menu and ordering works. Great selection for Happy Hour and the prices were fantastic. We decided to each one or two items and share it all. So we ended up with a pretty good sampler of the food. The food came out in a timely manner, hot, and looked great. It even tasted better. Everything we had was delicious. The portions were very fair for the price. Back to the drinks. We all ordered house speciality drinks , think big Tiki drinks. They are making this place out to be a club, it's not. Very noisy, very loud. Only been open a short time, the wait is least one hour. So be prepared. Not sure who came up with loud music in a Chinese restaurant, stupid. Pinball machine, bar in back, plays Lou's music, wherever you sit, it's loud As for the food, it's ok. Duck greasy, shrimp wonton is soup, so should not be in rice and noodle section of menu, shiitake pork egg rolls are so far good. It's modern Chinese food, sadly not real authentic like you'd get at a real Chinese restaurant. We'll never be back, absolutely awful atmosphere and food is mediocre, no thanks on a return visit. Unfortunately I came here again recently and the food was not very good. My friend and I were the first ones in the place when they opened so we assumed the food would be really fresh and delicious. The egg rolls were delicious as they always are. General Tso's chicken had a weird sour taste and was not fresh tasting. Green beans were swimming in a goopy sauce and also tasted old like reheated leftovers. Bartender messed up our order ( even though we were the only customers) and brought us spare ribs instead of one of our other dishes. I love spare ribs but these were over cooked and also tasted old. At least the waiter comped those. Drinks were delicious and strong as usual. I'm just bummed that the food went from amazing to pretty disgusting in a matter of weeks. Got to-go tonight and had the BEST experience. We got a frozen hurricane and a mai tai which were both perfect; fresh tasting, boozy, balanced and delicious. We got ribs, long beans, egg rolls, mushrooms, shrimp & pork dumplings and their version of General Tso's chicken and every single thing was perfect. Discovered this place Easter weekend and it is now at the top of my list of favorite places in Seattle. Their frozen drinks are delicious and velvety smooth. They are made in a machine rather than a blender, growing up in Texas I can really appreciate a good margarita machine (or in this case, Tiki-style cocktails) The ambiance is great, and the food is fabulous. WOAH why the hell this place has anything less than 4-5 stars is beyond me. Place is awesome, very kitch-y looking but in a very cool way. Love the outside and inside. Music is legittttt, food is solid and to an extent actually real Chinese. Drinks are also real good but the beers I think are a bit overpriced. It's a solid place that'll definitely have me as a regular. One thing I'd recommend they change about the karaoke room is just getting a real karaoke set up, having to look stuff up on YouTube isn't ideal, however the room/mic is awesome.
