I think some people are missing the point. This is a bar - 21 and over- that happens to serve food, not a Chinese restaurant that plays loud music. Maybe they would be more satisfied if the food was shitty, because then it would be an ordinary dark, divey cocktail bar. But the food is legit, so unfortunately people think they should be able to stroll in, have a chair pulled out for them and get served with silver spoons, apparently. It's crowded during predictably crowded hours because that's the score in a crowded bar. We ate half the menu and it was awesome. And drank half the drinks and they were sweet and stiff. A nice place to check out if you're in West Seattle, otherwise, not really worth the trip. Came in on a busy Saturday and all the tables and bar seats were full, but with no host or list it turned into a bunch of vultures circling to get the next open space. Most people seemed to respect that if you have been waiting longer you get the next table, but there is always someone in these situations that's going to try to muscle their way to the front of the line (and I promise it wasn't me). Luckily the crisis was averted with a few spots all opening up at the same time. Phew! While we waited the bartenders did take our drink order and brought it over to us. They were pretty friendly and helpful considering the place was jam-packed at every table and at least 4 or 5 groups waiting to get seated consistently. We sat by the bar, which with food, is a bit crowded since it is very narrow. The food came out pretty quickly and was very hot, so we had to let it sit and cool just a bit so it wouldn't burn our mouths. The General Tso's chicken was pretty good, it wasn't as sweetly sauced as most places and it was just a touch spicy with lots of tail end of hot little red peppers. It comes with rice, and was plenty. It was all dark meat, though, and it would have been nice to have a little white meat in the mix. Everything else we ordered came at the same time and it consisted of some hot and sour soup, honey pecan prawns, and their pork egg rolls. The egg rolls were the best, but still not amazing. The dipping sauce was super salty, to the point that if you got too much it was inedible. The egg roll itself was pretty tasty, though. The soup was thick like it had too much corn starch in it and was not good. The prawns were the worst. The breading was doughy because it was so thick and the prawns were so overcooked that they were dry. Also, they were a strange shape, so the first one I ended up crunching down on the tail and had to spit it out. I just wasn't blown away by New Luck Toy, if you're looking for a divey atmosphere they've done a good job creating it, but the food itself was okay, at best. It will probably be a great spot for folks in West Seattle that are further south on California. read more

I live right across the street from here so it's very convenient when I'm craving some Chinese/bar food. The insides pretty cool as it's decorated in a lot of Chinese style decor and it's a dimmed light atmosphere which I really dig. The service here is friendly, oh wait you don't care. You want to know about the food... well, it's delicious! At least in my opinion. Both times I've gone with their general tso's chicken with sticky white rice. The alcohol here is a bit pricy but not to the point where you won't just say, "aww Hell im already here bartender, another Rainier!" The locals I feel enjoy this place too so if you want the West Seattle flair then I'm sure it's here? Ok I'm blabbing now so I'll stop while I'm ahead! This is hands-down the best take-out Chinese food I have ever had in my life. I already can't wait to order from here again.

I was a little nervous because of the bad reviews but this is now my second time there and I would come again! I am confident I can give a reliable review since I've had almost everything on the food menu. First don't waste time with their slushie drinks, they are over priced for the amount you get (but they are tasty). Instead go straight for their Mai Tai, New Luck Toy is very generous with the alcohol in that mixed drink. Their 1/2 duck can be split between two people, it's very tasty and I've had it twice now. Glad to find a place that offers duck and cooks it nicely. Hooray for their pecan shrimp! It's like that Walnut shrimp you see in other restaurants, in the sweet white sauce. And their salt and pepper shrimp with the heads on is also very good. It comes with jalapeno peppers onto but I scrape them off. Those are my 3 favorite things. Oh! The short ribs, I had those for the first time and was super happy with them. They have a crust on the outside but are tender once you bite into them. I have also tried their green beans and dumplings. My friend really like their dumplings but they were just ok. And the green beans....tasted like green beans. Nothing amazing about them. What a great little spot. You enter and go back to the bar area, take a number, and write your number and the number of people in your party on a clipboard while you wait for a table to be assigned to you. Bar staff are very courteous and attentive. We got a table for four around 9:30 on a Saturday night within 15 minutes and went all in on the food and drink. The slushie drinks were our favorites, especially the margarita (strawberry & prickly pear) and the mango rum drink. The mule was good but not great. We also ordered the Ma po tofu, which I liked, but seemed a little heavy on the Szechuan pepper for some in the group. The pork spare ribs were very popular, as were the great salt and pepper shrimp and the noodle dish. I loved the pickled cucumbers, too. Great for cooling the mouth! The food is just OK as is the service. I appreciate the use of compostable plates and what not, but for the price I would recommend hiring a dish washer and investing in dishes. Very expensive and just average food. Oh, and really bad and loud music made it tough to have a conversation. read more

This place caught my eye because of the the decor but I will be returning because of the food! We had the BBQ pork with the steam buns on the side and the walnut shrimp. I definitely feel like we got our money's worth with not only portion but also the quality. Everything was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Be warned, the mustard with the BBQ pork stings! This place is a bit confusing, I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a sit down restaurant or a standing bar.. Chinese themed but with island music bumping..pricey food but served on paper plates. I feel like the owners had a lot of ideas for a concept but just couldn't put it together to make sense. Had the Singapore sling slushie which was good, not too sweet and with good amounts of alcohol. Not a fan of the food on the other hand- Salt/pepper shrimp and short ribs were EXTREMELY salty and should come with a jug of water, pork dumplings had good flavor but the wrapper was too thick, and the bak choy was...well just stir fried in garlic so you really can't mess that up. Not sure if I'd come back even just for drinks as the space is very tight; not ideal if you came with a group of 5+. read more

This spot was happening on a Friday. The skeeball at the entry is very inviting and the red lanterns scream cheesy Chinese! Seating is first come, first served, so be prepared to wait or creepily stand over someone who's finishing up. There was a long, slightly unorganized line to get a drink, so the BF and I decided to divide and conquer. I stood by looking for a table while he grabbed cocktails. We started with the boozy slushies and I had to limit myself to one because it went down real quick. After snagging some bar seats we put in an order. Started with the BBQ pork and dumplings. I wouldn't get the pork again- it was a little dry, but mmm the dumplings were great! Next came general tso's chicken and it didn't disappoint. The Mongolian beef was meh. This place is new in West Seattle and we decided to check it out Halloween night assuming people would be busy with their kids and it wouldn't be that packed. We picked the right time to go, we were able to get a table right away unlike our first attempt on Friday night when it was too busy and we left. The food was excellent. I would give this place a second try just based on the taste of their food. The waitress was not that friendly and the menu is confusing. The menus are paper and you put a check mark on a box for what you want. We assumed everything was a la carte - but it is not. All of their large dishes come with rice. This is great, but it would be nice if they put that on the menus. No where on the menu does it say that rice is included. Or if the waitress would have told us when we ordered rice, "just so you know - the dishes come with rice." So then we wasted an order of rice. For being a dive bar, I would give this place a second chance. They are still new and learning the ropes. The food was great. I would hope the customer service gets a better. I was really surprised too because being a new restaurant, the staff is normally cheery and welcoming. This girl treated us like she had been working there for 30 years and was just going through the motions without speaking. Very odd. read more

Just bad all around. Went here for some food and drinks with friends and the food (we had the general tso's and the walnut shrimp) was just embarrassing. No effort at all, zero flavor. We ate it cuz it was hot and expensive but regretted our choice of eating here from the get to. Their beer list sucks - only had 4 beers on tap and the IPA has blown out, and they didn't replace it with anything. It's a Dive Bar. It's not a Ma'Ono style nice restaurant. Now that we have that out of the way I can tell you I like the place. Divey, stiff drinks, dark, & decent food. I liked the feel and the service, everyone was real nice. There's a wait list system, not sure what the other reviewers were talking about. Unfortunately we had a bad first time experience. I am only reviewing the food and service. The bar and "dmv" pull tab seating system is gimmicky and inefficient. (We settled for bar seating) We ordered two apps, soup and Mongolian beef. Soup and egg rolls were average and the short ribs were burnt. I tried to dip them into sauce for taste, but they were burnt beyond recovery. We waited 45min for the main course that we never received. I asked for the bill and explained that we never received our main course and the app was burnt. With a shrug of the shoulders the 1st bartender explained that they were busy and this could happen.? After asking if I preferred to wait longer, we settled on removing it from the bill. As we were getting ready to leave the 2nd bartender asked how was everything and after we explained the situation, we were given a half smile, sorry to hear that and have a good night. I would never expect any freebies, but there was not even an attempt of reconciliation besides waiting longer. This place is AWESOME. The atmosphere is awesome. Red lanterns covering the ceiling. Opened late night and they got ski ball and pinball. Staff works hard and are so friendly. We had the duck (a MUST HAVE), BBQ pork (out of this world), Chinese spaghetti, and the green beans. The waitlist is a BITCH. We waited for 45mins on a Wednesday. Awesome place! My wife worked for many years at the "Original" New Luck Toy (a historical West Seattle Icon among local cocktailers). No real connection between the new and old which was a disappointment, but we got a positive vibe the instant we walked in the place. Our server Mary Ann was engaging, informative and attentive. And the salt & pepper spare ribs were fantastic! Only three critiques: The bar area is small and fills up fast. Drinks were poured light for the price. Background music was a little loud, necessitating conversations to be louder. We still think it's a great hangout for an after-work stress relief. And we'll definitely be back to check out the evening crowd. read more

Cool bar with fun drinks, bomb food and free karaoke. What more could you want? Seriously though New Luck Toy is one of the coolest spots I've been to lately. The outside is extremely understated. Walking up I had no idea what to expect. No windows to peek into and no one coming in or out. I was pleasantly surprised when we walked in and the place was packed. The bartendar Brendan is amazing! The reviews from Tony M, Lane R and Rob M below are straight up lies. I was at the table with these 3 people and they were being total jerks. The birthday girl was super drunk and was the one who called Brendan an A$$hole. Brendan was so professional, kind and polite. Seriously one of the kindest people I've probably ever met in my life. Literally. I was so embarrassed when Tony, Lane and Rob were absolute jerks to him. Eventually Brendan had to politely ask us all to leave. I am here to say I witnessed the entire thing and I am honored that Brendan served us. I will no longer be dining with Tony, Lane and Rob. I've been here 3-4 times since they opened but always like to give a new spot time to hit their stride before I review. Their food has always been good but tonight it was great! I had the Hot & Sour Soup and the Fried Rice with Chinese Sausage. Highly recommend both. Also, it has typically been over-crowded with seemingly everyone in the hood checking out the new joint. This place was fantastic! A really cool dive bar, street-food themed Chinese food place. We had the dumplings, General Tso's chicken, house-style Fried Rice and the BBQ appetizer- all of it was delicious. We didn't have any problems finding a table on a typical weekday night during dinner time, but it isn't the largest space and I can see how people could get frustrated with finding a table to accommodate 5+ people. A lot of reviews in here are complaining about the quality of the food, the atmosphere and the overall tone of the venue - and to be honest any place that's next to a convenience store that sells $1 tallboys and discount cigarettes should be taken at face value. They serve their dishes on paper plates and that's fine. The drinks are strong. If you're looking to dress up and have a gourmet meal with a date you're trying to impress, seek another restaurant. If you're looking to kick it with a friend or unwind after a so-so day at work, this is your spot. It's cozy and doesn't feel too over-the top. I have loved eating and hanging out at New Luck Toy for over a year but last night I feared for the safety of customers, staff, myself, and the person I was with (Maddie K, who also left a review). An incident of intimate partner violence broke out in the middle of the bar which was not addressed or broken up by staff. Rather, staff ignored the incident, downplayed the violence, and explained to us that these were friends of the establishment, as if that made it more okay. Bare minimum, I'm looking for a note about policy changes to address future violence in this establishment, trainings to build awareness re: intimate partner violence for New Luck Toy staff, and a life ban for the gentleman who violently and forcibly took his wife down to the ground in the center of the bar while no staff intervened. Safety of everyone in the space was at risk, and I won't be back until changes are made. read more

YUM!!! Wow, this hidden little gem is truly a diamond. I went here on a Friday night and it was packed. This is restaurant/bar fusion (21+) is very small and is split between a front room (ski-ball, karaoke room, lanterns in tHe ceiling) and the back room which is compromised of the bar and additional seating.. When you arrive you take a number from a kiosk and wait until you're called. The food is really delIcious. We ordered the honey pecan prawns, General Oh Tso Good Chicken, the pork bao, fried rice, Bok Choy, and the bbq pork. All of it was exceptional, except the fried rice was lacking a little flavor but still good! They put pineapple in their fried rice which I loved. And their drinks are so tasty. I had ordered the Polynesian Princess which was so flavorful and had a beautiful presentation. The only downside was the service was a little feisty and off-putting but that's understandable as it was a very busy night. I will definitely be coming back. read more
