I've always wanted to go visit this bar for the longest time, and I've finally scratched this off my bucket list. The ambiance was fun, and the bar service was great with lots of friendly frequent regular customers. This night I happened to visit was karaoke night, and I received 4 tickets to a concert at the Garden Amphitheater due to my singing abilities, charisma & great attitude. I went in expecting to have a good time with my friend and I ended up having a great night of fun, singing and laughs with my friend & new found friends. My friends and I were wandering around Redondo Beach when we saw a large "live karaoke" sign. Starboard Attitude is hidden on the second floor that you'll need to walk up some stairs too. I had a tequila sunrise and the bartender put in a good amount of liquor. It was only $5 too! They have live karaoke every night. Staff are friendly. There are restrooms in the back. I was at this bar a month and a half ago on a Saturday night to watch live music. When I went to use the restroom, let's just say the people there were not in their right minds. A lot of interesting activities going on. Anyway, I put my purse down for one second to wash my hands, and my cell phone was stolen. I looked all over the bar and asked the employees to help me. I received very little help. I went home and was able to locate the phone via "find my phone". It was still at the bar. I called no less than 10 times on several different days and no one answered the phone. I asked one of the employees several times to look for the phone. I texted one of the employees several times asking him to look for the phone. I finally drove down to the bar trying to pick up the phone. I was told that the phone was there, but apparently went missing again. It was a $600 phone. I will never, ever go there again. Lastly, I've gone to lots of places in Redondo Beach and I've never had anything stolen until I went to Starboard. read more

My friends whom are musicians (Thanks Neil, Bill and Pete), all got together and threw me a Birthday jam session. I'm not a musician and I never sang with a band, but I do love me some music. This bar sits a top Charlie's on Redondo Beach pier just before the hot dog on a stick place. Apparently, it has gone through some exterior renovations and I thought it looked nice enough. A narrow staircase leads you upstairs. It's smallish for a place that offers live music. My friends tell me that the owner has also installed a new sound system. (It may have been called Charlie's a long time ago, as I think my Mom called it that) A full bar, though not much on tap for this beer drinker (Better head to Naja's if you like beer). I noticed they had Guinness in a can, but was mortified when she pulled an iced, one inch thick , over-sized mug and then wrang the can into it like she was doing the laundry. Expensive at $6.00 each, but it was the best they had to offer me. People I knew from high school and many new friends were there and after an unscheduled set from the house band, our friends graced the stage and tore it up with the Blues (My friend Bill Berry apparently lived in New Orleans for many years and played at jazz fest, who knew?...he was always the crazy older brother of Allison who gave me a ride home from school once, in his beat up old VW, and introduced me to the Ramons). There were some regulars in there, whom now resemble bar flies as opposed to beach bums of days gone by. Our crowd filled the place and we reminisced between sets (it was SO loud), we danced and laughed. BUT....when our group of guys stopped playing, the joint cleared out and fast. There were only two or three people left. It's hard to gage what the place is really like. They have the funniest ladies room, for a second I thought I was on an airplane it was so small. It actually felt smaller, but it was clean. I've been here before 10 years ago and I'm not sure how much I remember of it then, but I ill tell you this..... My Dad was a rocket scientist by day and a jazz drummer at night and he played here many times and many many many years ago. I have a memory of me wearing a dark blue one piece swimsuit with yellow whales on it, I was about 7 years old). He brought me to the beach and said that he would be watching me from the windows as he pointed to this very same bar. During the day I could see him fine as he sipped on johnny walker and he and I exchanged waving to each other throughout the day. As I left that evening, I paused at the very same spot where my Dad sat watching me on that summer day and looked out onto the beach. Andy's usually on point and beside to introduce yourself to him if you want to sit in. Thursday night belongs to the Karaoke King. I really want to try this place but the only thing that has kept me out is the "B" rating in the window. I'm waiting for it to change to an "A" before stepping in there. Man ; I was looking everywhere for some fries to share with my bf so we could eat before we watched the stars on the beach . Everywhere on the beach , the cooks were out , I'm like damn . I finally go to this place and they only have nachos , I'm like dang , I really want fries . I stumbled upon this bar after going for dinner at El Torito last Monday I didn't even realize this was a bar, there was a blue sign outside that said karaoke , so up the stairs we went This bar is a real dive bar, dimly lit and it has a nice little fire put on one side , the Bartender Kim was super nice and the drinks were good and priced well The girl who does karaoke was really funny and nice , she greeted us when we came in , can't really remember her name , but she had long curly hair she gave us a little time before she called us up to sing , karaoke was good , pretty standard but lots of fun Will definitely be back soon read more

If I could give negative stars I would...Me, my fiancé and another friend of ours just got home from the worst experience we have ever had at Charlie's Place... It was 11:30pm and my friends and I were walking by after going to Barney's Beanery for food and and drinks...we heard people karaoking and decided to go upstairs and get some drinks. It was an empty bar...maybe like 6 people other than staff. The DJ was asking if anyone had any songs they wanted to request and my fiancé immediately jumped up and was like heck yeah and told her he wanted "Take on Me" by A-HA so they played it. While my fiancé was singing up on stage I was dancing and having a good time, I Iooked over and saw the "security guard" flashing his light at my friend telling him to get out. I was taken back cause we literally JUST got there maybe even 5 minutes and he was just sitting there enjoying some karaoke...lol Anyway, I told the guy we were going to order drinks and he said "no your friend said no to a drink so you're out of here!!"...I told him well 'no my fiancé is up there right now singing and we are going to order drinks after he got back"...He immediately told me "no you guys are done" and tried escorting us out with his stupid flashlight. He kept flashing it in my face and told me to leave and wouldn't let me talk. For a second I thought it was a joke...I complained to the bartender and she didn't seem to do anything...just that "he works here" and couldn't do anything. Meanwhile he is hovering over the bar yelling at us and flashing is light on and off... All I have to say is that it was a terrible experience due to the little "security guard" and not only did they lose about $50-$60 (that we would have ordered) plus tip, they lost at least three locals that will make sure everyone knows not to come here ever again...so thanks! Bar manager is abusive towards their customers. The new bar manager will verbally abuse you under his breath so that others can not hear him. He stares and watches you to see if you make any mistakes or speak loudly or act too talkative. He doesn't like some people and will throw them out rudely and for no reason at all. He's mean and nasty to his clients, customers, and will profile you and not let you in because of class or race. Stay away from that place! read more

I've come in here on and off for the last 10 years or so. Mostly for the truly awesome sound system, complete karaoke track system (any song ever made for K), ocean views, cheap drinks, very friendly bartenders, KJ and customers. I was looking over some of the negative reviews and wonder why they said some of the things they said: Dirty? Well, it is an old building on the pier. I would call it more run down than dirty and it could use a make over but Redondo is planning to tear everything down and rebuild the pier so why spend money on renovations at this time? They do NOT serve food but you can bring in what you want. I have NEVER seen a roach in the place but I guess it doesn't mean they aren't there, it IS right on the water. They do offer free hot dogs sometimes on Sundays and put out nachos. Lots of people seem to love that. Many times people have large parties there, too. I've seen weddings, showers, birthdays... and they bring tons of food in and generally make it available for the public to share in. Drinks can be as cheap as a few dollars. It's only common sense you should buy something if you are taking up a seat and using their entertainment system. They are paying for you to have fun, reciprocate! Myself, I've never been hassled about when to buy a drink, maybe 'cause they know my face. I always buy at least two to be sporting but I might sit for an hour before doing so. I generally buy non alcoholic, $2-$4 depending on the drink... PLUS a TIP of course! And, yes, the owner/bouncer has a very gruff demeanor. He always reminds me of George C. Scott... or an old time sailor. He doesn't talk much that I have noticed but he does look a bit gruff and just due to his features, "mean". I would guess that looking like that is a good thing for a low priced bar where people get mighty high and excited at times. Ya think?! Oh.... whoever picks the bands they have come in has GREAT taste. One of the few bars around that actually still hires GOOD bands to come in to play. Usually it's awesome rock, sometimes country or other genre. I must recommend this place and stand up against the nay sayers. Maybe it's the kind of place you accept for what it is or you don't. I say give it a try. Oh... and great place for dancing and rocking out if you're into it. Lots of people really get jumpin' to the bands here. The place is a total dive bar for locals, a much older crowd. People almost look homeless here, but very friendly and nice... EXCEPT for the guy who claims to be the manager. Grey hair, sits in the back and looks like an old sailor. My friend and I came here to stop in for a quick visit and watch the band she used to sing with perform, before we went off to a Christmas party. It was around 7:30pm and I had just sat down when the "manager" asked if he could get me a drink. I said, "No, thanks, I don't drink alcohol". His reply, "Well there is a 2 drink minimum and there's no cover charge so go buy a soda!" What? First off, if there was a cover, the place would be empty. Seriously. It's old and dirty. Secondly, I was there 4 minutes. So we buy hot waters (luke warm in a cup!) The bartender asks him how much to charge us and he says, "$3.75 each cup". She looks guilty and apologizes. He then says, "It's two drinks per person!" Really, we heard you the first time. We buy the waters, leave them untouched, socialize for a few more minutes and then leave. He just made the whole experience uncomfortable by watching us and pressuring us to buy our next drink. Should have been a pleasant reunion but unfortunately it wasn't. When my group walked in we noticed an off smell but hey its a divey kind of bar no biggy some of us bought a drink. But then the bouncer comes over after we are settled in and tells us there is a 2 drink minimum. Ok well let those who foolishly gave this bar money finish thier drink. But no he came a 2nd time to remind us. Some of the girls now felt uncomfortable as we were being glared at by the staff. So we left and those who had drinks had to rush them down. I know I'm not much of a drinker and I'm not really the bar scene type. But, after hanging out at the pier many times over the past year, I wanted to see what this place was about. I love karaoke and always see their sign lit up. My friends like to hang out at Naja's for their beer selection. I often visit Quality Seafood (see my review). This pier is by far one of my favorite locations in LA and this bar has the advantage of having great views from their windows. I'm not sure that the word "New" is an appropriate adjective for this dive bar. There's not much new about it. The place is old, the stairs going up were in terrible shape, and the decor looked like it was stuck in the past. I came in here late on a Saturday night with two friends. We were taking a stroll around the pier around midnight and decided to check this place out. Starboard? Idk? Maybe it's the fact the bar kind of feels like it "floats" above the water and the rest of the pier. Or maybe it's the lights they have around their building. Attitude? Yes! They sure have plenty of that! If the bar is literally above the water and the pier, they sure think they are above than their neighbors! When we walked in there was a bouncer at the door checking ID's. We sat down at a small table near one window. There was a band playing and the place was pretty empty (especially for a Saturday night). There were maybe 10 people total in the place, some dancing, some sitting around watching the band. The scene was definitely an older/locals crowd. There were plenty of seats around the bar and by the stage. We had been sitting down for less than 15 minutes when the bouncer comes up to us and says, "The manager said if you guys aren't going to buy a drink you have to leave." Is that how you run a business? We were never even approached by a server or bartender to ask us if we would LIKE ANYTHING! No subtle "How are you doing? Can I get you a drink?" Not so much as a , "I'm sorry but we have a drink minimum on nights we have entertainment." I can't believe this place has such high reviews. Phenomenal Blues a few nights of the week and Karaoke on the other nights. This place has no cover and expects you to dance or sing so hard that you'll eventually squelch your parched throat with one of their many special drink offers or some top shelf stuff. There is absolutely no PIER PRESSURE in this place and you will find people from all walks of life and from so many countries who come here. Those who are challenged singing but have the courage to get up get full applause and are not laughed at (well maybe just a touch sometimes!). When the blues bands hit the stage...it is infectious. If you don't get up and dance....you are deaf and have no sense of vibration. I am on business and have been in this area for 6 weeks. I now go to this place 4 nights a week. That is how good it is, how good I feel when I go and how welcomed I am while I am there. Pretty simple really, great place, great entertainment (including yourself sometimes!), awesome bartenders, fantastic location..., the only negative, a flight of stairs and no elevator...think of it as a warm-up. Sunday... hanging out at the pier with a friend. We walk by and saw the karaoke sign and decided to go in. There were just a few people; they seemed to be the older locals. We stuck around long enough for my friend to sing 3 songs. I listened to a few of the people go up several times and some were very bad especially "Super Mario". What tripped me out the most was a old white girl dancing exactly like Elaine from Seinfeld. If you haven't seen that episode.. she's having convulsions on the dance floor and has NO rhythm. She danced to every song! Anyway... if you just want to go sing and feel intimidated, this is the place. Hours: Mon - thurs @4pm Friday: @ 5pm Sat: @3pm Sun: @2pm They have karaoke most of the nights and open mic/ or a band the other nights. Recommended for older people. read more

I only went there once. Very loud 98.7fm being played, including all the commercials. That is pretty much my whole complaint. Later, they had a band, but was kinda cheesy. I have never seen/been to a bar that has a beer pong table in it!!! I walked into the bar, with a few friends... low and behold--Beer Pong... early Sunday afternoon! haha. Oh, and first pitcher is free My 3/5 stars is mainly based on the beer pong table. If it wasn't there I don't see myself ever going there again. The bar is rather small, "smoking patio" consists of a 4ft square of surface area when the door is closed... weak. I mean sure you can walk up/down the stairs, but c'mon... c'mon how many smokers (cigs) do you know that absolutely love climbing stairs after smoking. haha. I guess, it's kind of cool that they have karaoke. I might have given them a higher score if the place were more lively.
