Met with 2 good friends at the the old Poop Deck yesterday. It's been known for a several years now as the Deck. Mike B, & I live in the South Bay, Mike C, lives in Pasadena. Some 15 years ago he lived in Redondo. The Deck, is a great place to people watch while catching up with old friends. Along with a good selection of beers they serve some good pub grub too. Yesterday they had an event, girls volleyball tournament. It was fun to watch & added to the overall beach vibe. IF I COULD RATE THIS BAR -5 STARS, I WOULD!! :( On Sunday, August 11, 2019, my wife and I, along with my service dog were denied entry to the bar by the bar's manager, who stated that he did not allow animals in the bar due to the fact that they had an open grill. I informed him that my dog was a service animal and showed him my dog's service tags. Then the manager asked me what type of service did my dog provide? I then informed him that since I already showed him my dog's service tags that he was now in violation of the ADA law by not allowing me to enter with my dog. Upon entering the bar, I was approached by the bar's bouncer and bar manager who stated that they would call the police if we did not leave. We waited for the police to arrive, and went out to speak with them. The police officer informed us that the bar had the right to refuse service to my wife and I, but that HBPD could not force us to leave. Needless to say, my wife and I were embarrassed from all the attention this incident was causing us, and uneasy with the possibility that this bar has a long history of discriminatory policies towards service dogs. My wife and I also felt that we were discriminated against us as African American. I have since filed an ADA official complaint with the Department of Justice against this business establishment, and would asked that other service dog owners unite at this location during the Labor Day weekend and force the Deck Bar and Grill in Hermosa Beach, CA to change their current discriminatory policies. This place is a blast and they have carnita tacos, hell yesssss! I lean more towards dive bars, I honestly hate all the fuss and muss when it comes to other bars. I feel so at home here. Everyone is laid back, the drinks are good, they have games and food. I can chill here all night with a beer in hand. Drinks They have a good selection of beers, that's what most people are drinking here. They do have wine but I don't think I would recommend wine in a dive bar. My friend ordered a house cab and said it was awful but still drank it lol. The only thing that sucks is that they don't serve hard alcohol so you can't get a mixed drink or shots here. The loophole is that they do serve jello shots! Makes me feel like I'm in college again haha. I love it! Games You can play pool here and they also have a game off to the side. I've never played it but it looks cool and people are always having fun. It might be a shuffle board or something. We like to mix it up and play our own games. We asked for extra cups and a few pitchers and got flip cup going. Food On certain nights they have tacos. I'm a sucker for tacos especially when drinking beer. The tacos are damn good too. Carnitas all the way, I promise you won't regret it. They also have a popcorn machine. Super random but in the best way. Seating There is plenty of seating inside and outside. It is a smaller bar compared to others in the area but that's what I like about it. It's very cozy and welcoming. They have bar stools inside and benches outside but you will catch most people standing around chatting it up. Service There's typically only one bartender getting everyones drink orders but the service is always good! I come here on different nights of the week and every time has been a great experience. Went here on a busy weekend. The doorman was nice, but seemed to have ambiguous rules. Once we got in, the bartender Danny, was even worse. He refused to provide his last name, and was incredibly demanding. He told certain customers it was last call, and he served others after the fact. Furthermore, once I approached him, he had the audacity to claim my brother was on drugs because he felt he wasn't tipped enough. I have never met such a rude and disrespectful bartender. Lastly, he seems to have a very limited vocabulary, as he kept saying inappropriately that I was antagonizing him for asking a simple question. The staff seemed alright for the most part, but I would say stay clear of Danny. He's incredibly rude and disrespectful, and should not be working in a position that requires customer service. read more

While they've scrubbed it a bit, added a new coat of paint, and brought in better wine and beer, it's still mostly the same place. I say that as I watched drunk customer pour all the ice and water from a bucket of beer over his head. Why? Because it's still the P-Deck. Did he get 86'd? Nope--they just got a mop. Why? Because it's still the P-Deck. The big appeal is that there is a direct view of the volleyball courts in Hermosa, and because there's a little patio in back to get some sun/sneak a smoke. Inside, they've resurface the floor, but there's no mistaking that nautical theme running through the old wooden interior. When I was here about a year ago, I was told that the Poopdeck was going to be torn down, and in it's place would be another hotel. I'm so glad that didn't happen. The Deck is still a dive bar, but with some upgrading. It's like they got a little botox, but are still recognizable. As other Yelp reviewers have stated, they serve wine now. The pours are decent and adequately priced. I believe they have changed their beers on tap from the last time I was here. I didn't have any beer this time, but I will be sure to check it out the next time I am in town. read more

We love the Deck. We loved this place when it was the POOP DECK and only served Bud & Bud light. When Jeff took it over, he deep cleaned the entire space, made some repairs and improvements, kept the outside patio area and increased the variety of beers on tap and added some great wines. You can't beat the location- right on the strand. Grab a beer and watch the world skate, stroll or bike by. A perfect place to catch an amazing California sunset. I remember coming here one December from Jersey and being all like ... Dude I cant believe I'm playing beer pong with my toes in the sand and its December and saying to myself I need to move out here. ... fast forward 6 years later ... The pool games can get competitive and its definitively a refreshing breather from the hoity toity popularity contest going on on the rest of the Strand and the drinks are just a tad cheaper. Thank goodness this place is closing. Went in to meet friend who saved a table for us and was told max capacity, yet we waited while two other people were more than welcome to come in. Confronted the rude male bartender about the other people they let in while being at "max capacity" but the bartender was hostile and cussing at us for simply asking why the other people were let in but not us. Friendly bouncer and bar tender was quick to serve. Free self-serve popcorn. I dig the divey vibe - loud music, shuffleboard/pool table, people enjoying talking and laughing. We were at a table that was in the way of their operation which I totally understand is annoying but all he had to do was ask nicely for us to move... instead he cursed at us and wanted to fight me for no apparent reason?? We still hung out and had a few drinks and when i closed out and informed the bartender, he was immediately aware of whom it was, I'm sorry but that's stupid to have an employee that does that to a customer... when I told that to the bartender, the person in question yelled at me and said I should never return:.
