After our drinks were dropped off, our server walked past our table at least 10 times without checking in -- even though the restaurant wasn't particularly busy and staff seemed to be gathered near the front chatting. We ended up flagging down another server, who wasn't very friendly or helpful with menu suggestions. As for the food: the chicken fingers were actually really good -- hot and crispy -- but everything else missed the mark. The hot and sour soup had little to no flavor, and the chicken in the pad Thai was rubbery with an overall bland taste. I also decided to skip the hibachi after seeing how ingredients were being handled. They were stacked on open trays, one on top of another, with raw meat placed above other items. I visited New Tokyo on a recent weekday for lunch. The restaurant is nicely decorated, and has subdued lighting; a perfect spot. The food was magnificent! I ordered the Nigiri Sushi and Thai shrimp rolls. The shrimp rolls were large, steaming hot, delicately flavored and crisp. The sushi was fresh, very flavorful, and generous. The only negative was the waitress. She took my order, delivered my food, and spent the remainder of my visit on her personal cell phone with her back to me. I would have loved a refill of my drink. I have a seafood allergy & I don't eat pork. I've eaten at many, many places that serve both items & rarely have a problem after bringing my dietary restrictions to their attention. After carefully reading the listed ingredients, I ordered the duck ramen. I was given an alternative broth option & fish cakes *ARE NOT LISTED ON THE MENU.* This isn't my first time eating ramen; every other place that I've been to will specifically list fish cakes as an ingredient. I get the soup & first thing I noticed is that the eggs are hard boiled (I ordered an extra egg bc they only include half an egg). Not only were they hard boiled but they were cold, like prepackaged, cut then thrown in cold. I took a couple bites of the duck but realized something just didn't smell right. I looked at the soup a little closer & saw fish cakes! So I spit out the bite I had in my mouth & flagged down the server. At first I asked to have the soup removed & get an order of chicken satay instead. He offered to remake the soup but I declined & said satay would be fine. The guy walked away with the bowl, came back with the bowl said that I can't do that. That the only alternative is for the chef to remake me the soup & it couldn't be substituted for satay. I then said never mind to the satay & I'd just like the bill for my drink. He leaves again with the bowl & again returns with the same bowl, stating I wasn't allowed to do that either & must pay for the soup. Why would I pay for a $27 bowl of ramen that I cannot eat? I pulled up the menu on my phone & asked for him to show me where fish cakes were listed because if I missed it, then that's on me. He tried to walk away with my phone before I asked for it back & told him to get a physical menu. Needless to say, it's not listed. We were seated and when I placed my order I specifically asked if this would be served Hibachi style. I asked this because it did not appear we were seated anywhere near the hibachi table. I was assured it would be served hibachi style, and to my surprise, it was NOT! Ordered take out around 5pm and when i got there 2 thirds of my order was wrong. When the host asked the server that took the order she laughed and strugged her shoulders. So waited for them to remake my order they still got it wrong i corrected it again and waited longer again till it was finally done. maybe dont laugh in a customers face or not care about the mistake. We ordered wonton soup, steamed dumplings, the "deadly catch 1" sushi roll, and filet mignon hibachi dinner (came with miso soup, salad, "fried rice", and "vegetables"). Wonton soup was ok (according to my son), miso soup had old/stale mushrooms in it (you could see the "brown circle marks" on them from how old they were), steamed dumplings were edible, salad was discolored (some of the lettuce was starting to turn brown) and premade so it was soggy from sitting in the dressing for so long (which wasn't the typical ginger dressing you get...very strange tasting, like it was old), filet mignon was over cooked and chewy, fried rice was just greasy rice with a few bits of egg in it (that's all), vegetables (zucchini and onion only) were so greasy that there was a ton of oil all over them and all over the bottom of the plate, sauces didn't go well with the dish, and the sushi roll was the only thing that was made fresh (everything else came out immediately after we ordered, so I knew it had been premade and sitting around for God knows how long). I barely ate anything, but my son was hungry from our long 3 hour car ride for our vacation (we were staying at the Hilton next door) and ate what I left on the plate. No one said a peep but were all on cell phones the whole time. Maybe they were just take out but they clearly knew I was eating dinner and had no problem charging me 40. No tip on check. I've been to New Tokyo many times but on my last visit I was introduced to something awesome, One word: Mantai! A-mazing, they make their sushi sooo much better. Between half off Mondays and Tuesdays + Mantais, the only reasons they get so many stars. Service is so-so. Sometimes okay and that's stretching it, but most of the time you get multiple servers, you have no idea whose the hostess, where to check in when you there or even who to get a drink from. But i feel that at most Japanese places that aren't "upscale" and pricey, you're going to find that. So I get over it and I like that they constantly re-fill your water and are quick with drinks and food. Expect a huge wait where reservations mean nothing on Mon and Tues, the place is PACKED. Just look for the confused lady with the clipboard and wait your turn for ATLEAST an hour. Any other day, it isn't hard to get a table and they're not going to rush you out. Hibachi grill is fun, huge portions like most hibachi grills so nothing too special. Grill guys are pretty interactive and do the usual stunts. Menu items can be ordered at the hibachi grill which is a plus. Sushi is good but nothing spectacular, creative or different. Great place when you're craving cheap sushi and strong drinks. read more

Yup, I got sake to the face! Took my dad and the fam here for father's day to get the hibachi experience. We got the same hibachi chef as I had gotten the first time I was there, .. and he is AWESOME! I wish I knew his name. Well everyone got slapped in the face with vegatables which was once again quite hilaious. Me, my mom and dad all got sake to the face which was hilarious to see happening to them, because the hibachi chef just doesnt stop pouring lol.. The hibachi chef provided pure enterainment the entire time he cooked... singing "I like to move it move it" while spinning utensils around and then he tosses and spins eggs around while singing "Baby chicken dannnncing, baby chicken dannnnncing" ... gotta love him! And watch out for the little man that pees on you! Too funny. The chef that was cooking for the people across from us kinda sucked, he wasnt singing or dancing and a poor little boy that looked like Stuart Little asked for sake and the chef shot soy sauce in the poor kids mouth. Eeesh-ka! But the chef that was at the table to our left was also fun. A little two year old wanted to catch veggies in his mouth too, so the chef made it as easy as possible for the child and what do you know, he got it in! The littles boys hands are flying in the air he's so excited and jokingly the chef starts saying "Sake, Sake, Sake!!!" lol .... But no, no sake for him. The food tastes DELICIOUS!! Once again I got the chicken and shrimp; My parents went all out and go the combination for two which was the Filet, Lobster and Tuna, which she let me try a piece and it was REALLY good. I can't drink rum so I ordered the Pineapple Bomber which was really good and fruity, my dad got the banana split drink thingy which he really liked but it went down in about two sips lol.
