New Tops is consistently good. Been getting Chinese food here with my family for at least over a decade. Takeout only really, there's space to sit inside but not a lot of chairs. The chicken Lo Mein is one of the best things that I have ever tasted. The food is pretty good. The chicken and broccoli is good but has WAY too much soy sauce. The spring rolls were the first spring rolls I have ever tried, but man, were they good. The service took a while, it came in about 15-20 minutes. The Ambiance is a bit eriee. In the past, there wasn't any seats. So glad they have it now. It's just, something about slurping on Chicken Lo Mein, when it's sunset, while firework are being fired is so comforting. read more

Horrible! Stale refrigerator food. The worst. Go somewhere else. The rice was Spanish looking rice, the trio, chicken with cashews and Mongolian beef had to be trashed. That stale refrigerator taste or leftover taste was unbelievable. We may have eaten a couple of tablespoons before trashing. Thankfully we didn't eat any more. The lady at the counter was extremely rude. My boyfriend and I ordered the vegetable lo mein and the "teriyaki chicken special." The Teriyaki special was supposed to come with rice, but they forgot it. Then, when I asked the woman behind the counter for duck sauce and hot mustard she just said "NO, it in bag." Ordered from here because it was mildly close to my office and I had been wanting some Chinese takeout since my favorite spot closed for the pandemic. Crab Rangoon was great but the chicken lo mein had a very overpowering garlic taste for some reason. Disappointed that I got the larger size because I definitely won't be keeping the leftovers. Just an odd taste for something to have for a dish that's so normal. They seemed very busy and there were plenty of customers getting take out, but the taste just wasn't what you would have expected. If you are from a lager urban area than Richmond and understand that New Tops is takeout only, you should be pleased with New Tops. I lived in the DC area and loved a number of the strip shopping center takeout Chinese restaurants. Since moving to the Richmond area, I have patronized this restaurant for over five years, and keep going back. The food is basic, consistent and fresh. The staff always remember me and how my wife likes her items prepared. If you have special requests and ask politely they will attempt to accommodate. When I have asked for special preparation they always remember when I visit next. The people who work here are hardworking and friendly (if you are friendly and work a little to bridge the language gap). The food is good, quality is consistent, and a very good value. As an aside, they are the only Chinese takeout that has never made an error in my order. At a number of takeout places, I have arrived at home only to find something missing or something I did not order. read more

When I returned the food, uneaten, the lady argued that it's a mushroom. She was rude and wouldn't refund the total lunch cost because I ate the egg drop soup. You can tell a place has good food when there is a huge diversity of people ages, races, sexes. Located in a sort of desolate area across from Glenside Drive (RIP Shoney's and Martin's), this quiet Chinese restaurant is pretty decent for their offerings. The restaurant itself is larger than most take-out places, and they have a buffet (they were not serving when we went to pick up our food) and several booths just in case you'd prefer to eat there instead of taking out. The person behind the register did not seem very happy to be there at all. The food is pretty good- I normally just stick with the same thing when ordering Chinese- steamed chicken and broccoli with General Tso's sauce and hot and sour soup. Their soup is delicious. I would probably go back just for that. The cooks were very quick and we didn't wait long at all for our food to be ready. I paid about 10 bucks for my meal, which is not a bad deal. I would say the only downside is the lack of friendliness by the staff, but other than that, I recommend ordering from New Top's. read more

The food is decent, as said by others, service is not with a smile. I have gone out of my way to be polite and kind to the woman at the front. Over the years, she's shown a bit of reciprocation on her end. I think she wants to be nice, it's like she doesn't know how (if that makes any sense). I have been getting take out from here, on average, once every other month for about 7 years, and never have I dared to dine in - it's FILTHY... and yes, as I type this, it does make me question why I would serve food to my family to EAT from a place I'm scared to SIT... Last week was the last straw. I went in to pick up my food, and the 3 people I saw working there (woman @ front, man mopping dining area, and cook in back) were all sniffling, coughing, and looked like a train hit them. Obviously they were sick. I was so disgusted by the woman at the front wiping her nose with her hand, as she took my cash, I told her to keep the change.... she handed me my food, and immediately wiped her nose with her hand... and THEN (the kitchen is visible from where you pay) the cook wiped his nose on with his hand FRONT & BACK and took a big sniff to wrangle in his snot, as he was placing to-go food in it's container. I couldn't be rude to their faces... they were obviously sick - but it repulsed me. I smiled, took my food, and stopped at the trash can in front of Martins and threw away the food. It makes me mad that I wasted $26 ... but there's no way I could serve that to my family. It makes me sad, because it was close, affordable, and decent food - but I just can't go back. I understand that a family business must keep going on, even if the workers are sick - but they need to figure something else out in those situations. I feel bad that they had to work when they should have been in bed, but I'm not putting MY family at risk... and it really does make you wonder if that's what goes on in front of the customer --- what in the world goes on where we can't see. read more
