I haven't reviewed Peter Chang's in a while so decided I'd revisit and make a new assessment. I can confirm this is the best Chinese food in the area. And it's not dumbed down American Chinese at all. My husband and I both work from home so we get to go have lunch at area restaurants from time to time. We have our regular places and we order Peter Chang's for takeout sometimes, but when we were deciding where to eat and knowing we were short on time, I suggested Peter Chang. For our meal we ordered dumplings, which were amazing. The dipping sauce was to die for...I need to research it and try to make it. We also got the scallion pancake, which came with a curry dipping sauce. Also very good. For lunch there is a menu that is typical of Chinese restaurants where you get a choice of soup (I chose hot and sour) and rice (I chose white rice). For my main I selected hot and numbing chicken from the lunch menu. My husband got three pepper steak. We also got jasmine tea, although if you prefer an adult beverage they have a bar. The food was excellent, service was attentive but not overbearing. It was a great meal and we both have lots of leftovers. The restaurant can be a bit noisy because it's just a big open room, but it's okay. The table next to use was loud talkers with no inside voice, so I got to hear all about their trip to Charlottesville for a concert. Sounds like they had a good time. I wish people were more self-aware about the volume of their voices in public but maybe his ears were wrecked from the concert. P.S. Peter Chang was the chef to a Chinese dignitary like an ambassador so he's the real deal. read more

The lamb was great, but they only give 3 lamb lollipops for $35. It wasn't worth it. The rest of the food was not great. We ate the combination fried rice. It had too much soy sauce and you couldn't taste anything else. The white rice was dry and undercooked. I feel like this is an utter travesty. I was at least expecting good rice. The golden mountain had great flavor but I think it was a mistake to eat it at home. It was mushy by the time we ate it. You can taste the spite in general Tso's chicken. It's like they don't want you to order it. The flavor is just sweet without any complexity. I've had better flavored general Tso sauce from grocery store brands. I had dinner here on a Friday night, and it quickly got packed inside the small but clean restaurant. Our server was prompt and friendly. My group ordered an assortment of Chinese staples, with some Szechuan spices to boot! The Shan City Chicken delivered the iconic spice and numbness that addicts most foodies! Everything impressed the table, from the shrimp lo mein to the stir fried beef and vegetables. The General Tso's chicken also won acclaim. It has been a while since I last went to Peter Chang's. I had forgotten how incredible the food is. My monthly ladies dinner group came here for our March outing. We loved being seated at the big round table so everyone can easily and chat with everyone else. What I think i like best about this place are the menu choices - stuff you do not typically see in "normal" Chinese restaurant. We ordered a variety of apps, including spring rolls and the bubble pancake. All were quickly devoured. We ordered a variety of entrees too. Everyone really enjoyed their choices. I ordered the Seafood in a Stone Pot. I absolutely loved it. Loaded with hunks of fish, shrimp and vegetables in a delicious yellow curry sauce, served in a caldron. It was such a hearty helping that I got two lunches out of it. Service was very nice too. It is worth the trip to Short Pump. I look forward to returning. read more

The restaurant specializes in Szechuan food so it's very flavorful and full of spices and peppers, some of which are numbing. Our must haves are the crispy pork belly, seafood in stone pot, dry fried green beans, mapo tofu with beef, golden mountain chicken, and bamboo fish. The restaurant has seating for small and large parties. There are only two round tables with lazy susans that can fit ten people each - perfect for family style dining. We visited Peter Chang in Glen Allen on a Sunday afternoon while my sister was in town visiting from out of state. There was no wait, and unfortunately, we quickly understood why. We ordered two large orders of sweet and sour chicken for our group of eight, along with several other dishes. The sweet and sour chicken was overwhelmingly sweet -- so much so that no one at the table could eat it. It wasn't just slightly sweet; it was excessively sugary to the point of being inedible. When we brought this to the waiter's attention, we were told they could remake it -- but we would be charged for another order. My husband, who is fluent in Cantonese and very familiar with authentic Cantonese cuisine, explained clearly to both the waiter and the manager that the dish was far sweeter than it should be. He specifically said, "Not that sweet." We were told that this is simply how they make it. What was most disappointing was that there was no effort to accommodate us -- no offer to remake it at no charge, no adjustment to the bill, and no compromise whatsoever. For a restaurant that carries such a strong reputation, the lack of customer service was surprising. After this experience, it's easy to remember why we hadn't been back in over 10 years. Last time I was here was actually ten years ago. I absolutely love Peter Chang restaurants and have been to many different concepts of his places. I remember loving the food the last time I was here, but definitely wasn't feeling it this time. I ordered my favorite Peter Change Szechuan style dish - chicken with spicy peppers and onions. It's normally loaded with amazing flavor and heat. The one I got here for lunch was bland and missing some things. Instead of using sliced dried chilis, they used red pepper flakes (definitely not the same flavor). I'm used to the location in Fredericksburg which uses the cilantro stems and leafs completely differently, thus the flavors imparted are proportional to that. Here, they used both, but applied them at the same time and the leafs were flavorless and cooked down too much. The worse part was that something in the flavor was complete off/missing. This was a bland dish because it was missing just one items, but I can't really tell what that item was. It missed the smokey umami flavor, so I naturally want to think it missed cumin, but cumin isn't in this dish. Regardless... I let the server know I wasn't happy with the dish and he was very pleasant about my input. I'm saddened by this visit and next time I'm in the area and seeking authentic Szechuan flavors, I'll go elsewhere. We did takeout at this place, and I wasn't super sure about it at first, but it had some solid foods! We got the Bamboo fish which was really good! I am not exactly sure but it felt very Sichuan style, with more of a numbing spice style. I grew up eating more taiwanese food(which isn't as spicy) and I didn't think the fish was too spicy. We also got the Yuxiang qie zi(Garlic Eggplant?) and that was actually quite good. Eggplant was sauce, flavor was there. The Mapo Tofu did not have meat with it which made one of us not a big fan of it(the only non Chinese person among us , if you care about that kind of detail) The rest of us thought the Mapo Tofu wasn't too spicy and had decent flavor. To start with the good: The food is great, ranging from spicy to non-spicy they have something for everyone. The hosts they employ is always super helpful, friendly, etc. Ordering takeout and getting their food delivered is excellent. Order is always accurate and hot when picked up and delivered which is a plus. The restaurants decor and cleanliness. The bad: Sitting down in this restaurant, we went on a Saturday night and they were pretty busy we were told a 40 minute wait and we only had to wait about 25-30 minutes. Why is this in the bad you ask ? Because after we were sat it was a whole 20 minutes before ANYONE came to our table. We were actually about to get up and walk out and miraculously our waiter suddenly appeared saying "no one told me this was my table". The waiter then went on to make some questionable remarks about how little some people at our table ate and how much some people at our table ate and drank their water. Maybe the difference in culture, sure, but in an environment that paying customers are sitting at your table I think it would be better to keep your "observations" to yourself. read more

I had come here a few time in the past and every tie it was closed (remodeling, holidays, etc) and gladly they were open the day my mom and I headed in for lunch. Service it personable and polite. Peter Changs has been our favorite place and that just tells you how great this place is. The Peter Chang we went is the one located in Shortpump, we go here because the parking space is so much better compare to the one at Scotts Addition. for appetizers, we ordered the Crispy Pork Belly and the steamed dumplings. Pork Belly is a staple in our Family, its spicy but they cooked it so perfectly! it's crispy and good! as for the main entree we ordered the shrimp with mushrooms, chicken with mushrooms, fish on hot pot and dan dan noodles. ohhhh my goodness! Chicken with mushrooms was the favorite on that table! the sauce they have their was so tasty that it compliments the mushrooms and the chicken together! I couldn't stop eating it! my least favorite was the dan dan noodles, it is somewhat sweet that my brain couldn't just wrap it around what to think of it. This restaurant has a variety of entrees to choose one. My favorite appetizer was the scallion bubble waffle. It's cute and fun to tear apart, although I think the sauce it comes with is bland. Most foods we got was a hit except a couple. We got the crispy pork belly appetizer, but it wasn't crispy at all. It felt like it was just breaded and put in sauce, and the pork itself was very chewy. The Peter Chang's seafood in stone pot with yellow curry sauce was very flavorful and I loved it with the rice and scallion pancake. The tofu and mixed vegetables in stone pot had good flavor and had a good thick sauce using oyster sauce as its base. Although we asked for the beef Szechuan stir fried hot pot to be mild, it was very spicy and didn't have a good sauce to tie it all together. The basil chicken was wrapped in aluminum foil to keep it hot (good thinking), but I wish the chicken and veggies were cooked more to get a nice sear. As for the bamboo fish, it was excellent and had some flavor and kick to it. I also liked the beef mushroom crispy noodles but wish the veggies and beef were more coated in the sauce. It kind of just pooled at the bottom and already made the noodles very saucy and not crispy. Usual Chinese crispy noodles have a deep fried noodle base which makes it crunchy and then have a thick gravy on top that you can then mix in if you want to. Therefore, out of the dishes we got, I'd only really recommend the scallion bubble pancake, bamboo fish, Peter chang's seafood in stone pot (yellow curry sauce), and dry fried green beans (but that's because I like this vegetable). The service was questionable here. I'm not sure if the waitress who served us knew what she was doing. She sounded very unsure but still tried her best to be friendly and accommodating especially when we needed more dishes and utensils. The food came out one after the other and we were overwhelmed with the lack of space. Ambience was busy and bustling so be careful! There's also a lot of parking since this restaurant is in a plaza. My family comes here several times a year and it's one of our favorite spots. It has amazing Szechuan food and is known for all their tongue numbing spicy foods. Definitely come if you can take the heat. All the dishes are served family style so I highly recommend coming with a big a group if you can. That way you can try more of their delicious menu together. Complimentary white rice is served for each customer FYI. Our favorite dishes are: The Crispy Pork Belly (very spicy but such a delicious appetizer) , Bubble Scallion Pancake (this is a giant bubble that you dip into curry sauce similar to naan), Dan Dan Noodles (spicy noodles) , Golden Mountain Chicken (one of their non-spicy dishes, very sweet and crispy), and the String Beans (very well seasoned, a hint of spice). Every single one of these dishes has my stamp of approval. As for spiciness levels, the dishes vary quite a bit. Most of the food is spicy, there are a handful of ones that aren't such as the Fried Rice, the Golden Mountain Chicken. The menu offers some guidance on the spice level in on a scale of 1 pepper to 5 peppers. The spice level is a little inconsistent upon each visit, seems like it's up to whoever is cooking the dish. Some days the spice level is tongue numbing while other days you only taste a hint of it. I myself prefer it to be higher but that's just me. The only criticism I have of this place is that the service can be hit or miss. Some days it's fantastic but other days the servers can disappear for long periods of time. Since they also serve every dish family style, maybe they should include a "lazy susan" at each table to make passing dishes more easy? Solid 5/5. Decided to try this restaurant out with a few friends of mine. We live a good Asian cuisine so why not go for a family style Chinese dinner since it was a large group of us. Happy to say, the food was delicious and the the service was great as well. The Food: Our group was very hungry, so we got a lot of food. From chicken, pork belly, seafood, tofu and beef. I think we covered our bases. My favorite of the dishes we had was the "House Special Flounder Fish Fillet". The fish was cooked very nicely and tender and the sauce/veggies that the fish was placed on top of was amazing. Other dishes like the "Mapo Tofu" was delicious as well. Everything had a nice authentic flavor and taste. The Service: The service was great! Staff were friendly and attentive with refills and updates on our meal. The dishes were brought out in a timely manner, even on a busy weekend dinner service. Overall, a solid 5/5. I'd highly recommend trying this place out. The food is great. It always is. I wasn't even going to leave a review because I have nothing new to say but I felt I had to comment on the service. The usual things were fine. The server took the order and brought the food in a reasonable length of time and refilled water regularly but he doesn't listen. We ordered four dishes, three of which normally have cilantro. We repeated "No cilantro" at least three times. First dish comes - shouldn't have cilantro and it doesn't. Good. Next dish is full of cilantro. Not just sprinkled on top but fully mixed in. Third dish thankfully has no cilantro. Last one comes covered in cilantro. That's bad enough by itself but the server puts down the plate, looks at it, comments something about it shouldn't have cilantro, and then walks away. Fortunately I don't have an allergy to cilantro, I just have a strong aversion to it. For $65+, though, I would have expected an offer to replace at least one of the dishes they screwed up. read more

My food was really on point... i had the bamboo fish ( level 3) and hot and numbing combination!! If you like spice both these should be in your list. The fish is always cooked perfectly and the combination has all the meats: beef, fish, shrimp and chicken!!! Usually comes with mixed veggies but I get it with broccoli only. Now on the other hand my friends food... the 3 pepper chicken came out looked and tasted good but she ordered it without mushrooms and the spice level was wrong. They did take it back to make another but this one came out super fast. The veggies in it wasn't cooked at all and the sauce was like water. So it goes back again. Came back just slightly better still not right but she kept it. I can save our server was very patient with us and with the situation. Really excellent Chinese restaurant for Szechuan food! Spicy and savory, all the dishes are well executed and the food is perfect for those cold weather nights when you need something to warm you up. The spicy peppercorn fish leaves your mouth tingling but it goes so well with a bowl of white rice. The Beef Dry Pot has really tender strips of beef and those delicious crispy potatoes that soak up all the flavors and the chili oil. While the dishes are certainly a bit pricey and portion size can be a little small, this is more than made up by bold food with big flavors. Keep up the good work :) read more

I was contemplating to go to the closer location downtown but heard that this was the new location so decided to drive an extra 15-minutes to dine here. I made the right choice! First off -- lots of parking! Free parking for all! The customer service was top notch from start to finish. The guys were very kind and attentive. Respect to that! I was alone so I didn't want to order too many dishes. I'm bringing a party next time! I went with... Crispy Pork Belly: I've had pork belly in all types of way but this one stands out! Cut thinly, lightly battered, and fried with peppers, cilantro, green onions and topped with more pepper! Don't let it fool you, looks spicy but it's more of a sweet spice. Fantastic! Cook to perfection! Shrimp Fried Rice: A quality bowl of fried rice. Enough for 2-3 people. Fried rice done right! I could've probably opted out for regular white rice but you only live once. Overall, fantastic job! Love the space. Would be a great place to grab some good Chinese food and watch a game! There's a very nice bar section too. Lots of seating.
