Love the food, the coffee, the wide space + outlet availability. Amazing. Had a great flat white. Good biscuits. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is due to service. While they were both very nice, the barista completely finished every previous espresso drink as he got them before taking my order (compared to the normal practice to take the next few orders in line so you can be efficient in your espresso pulls). Again, not a huge deal in the long run, but the memory of time passing, like cold and thick molasses, as I watch each, slow, careful thump of the single espresso shots being emptied, each slow (but perfect) rosetta form in the foam, living with the knowledge​ of how much the owner of that Rosetta​ will enjoy their drink before I​ can even enjoy the satisfaction of expecting my own, it stays with a person! read more

The world needs more places like New Wave The coffee itself is excellent. I was at first disappointed that they do not have Intelligentsia but the dark Metropolis is as good as anything they put out. This being our first time there we split a little of everything. The vegan soup was densely flavored while the veggie sandwich had a nice mixture, but maybe a little too heavy on the onion. We also tried the scone and cheesecake. Both went great with their coffee and are highly recommended. The prices are lower than average for this type of place. A bottomless cup of coffee is $2 which is the same price for a medium to go. Sandwiches range from $5-$6, a cup of soup was around $1.50 (cheap!) and pastries were around $2. It has a relaxed atmosphere with quiet music, and acoustics that don't let it get too loud from other people's mindless conversations. It was difficult to find a seat on Sunday afternoon, but I'm told they will add more tables. The staff was friendly, but I guess everyone is when they start a new job. I'll check back in a month or so to see if they become embittered by the unwashed masses asking for coffee at 10am on Sundays. As mentioned in another review, there were an incredible amount of MacBooks. I would estimate that I saw ten notebook computers and nine were made by Apple. Okay, so, if you're not taking care of the front of the house, what are you doing back of the house. I was overwhelmed with disgust when I walked into this coffee shop. The furniture is run down and dirty. I honestly did not want to sit anywhere for fear of bed bugs and everything under the sun. But I did anyway. I ordered a chai latte, which was fine. But as I sat trying to enjoy my beverage, I just couldn't. There was dust build up EVERYWHERE and in one corner there was a SOCK! Living in Logan Square is gold if you're a coffee snob like me because you're surrounded by some of the best spots in the city to drink it. New Wave Coffee is one of those spots everyone should stop by once for an espresso shot or cold brew, at the least. The coffee here is good. In particular they make a good soy latte, which is difficult. The problem is on cold winter days they don't set the temperature high enough, and it's cold inside. It's kind of always cold. The cold combined with the doors opening and closing means that it's really not somewhere you can stay for very long. Plus, the furniture is steel and other kinds of metal that are additionally cold. This is just not a good winter hang out. I'm updating this in summer of 2018. This place must be making money. They have updated the signage that's now professional looking. Unfortunately, the faucet in the bathroom necessitates holding it on with one hand constantly. This means you can never actually wash your hands. Plus, there is never paper towel to dry your hands. Basic hygiene is lacking. read more

I read the yelp reviews, and needed to give this place a shot for myself despite the warnings. I'm not scared of a rude or aggressive wait staff as others have noted, and I was really curious what could possibly keep this place in business if the experience was so supposedly awful. I walked in and confidently ordered a doppio for here and a large iced to go. Same thing I order pretty much everywhere. The barista shot me a smile, to which I returned said smile. Looking around, I loved how sloppy the decor was. This place is not trying too hard. It's just a neighborhood coffee shop that 10-20 years ago might have been run by aging hippies but instead is run by wonderfully bearded hipsters. There are signs all over the place, that at first feel like they might be insulting the consumer. Signs that ask you to put down your phone and treat the baristas like humans? I like it. Stopped in to grab a couple of drinks to get our caffeine fix for the day. The place was crowded and the line was huge bu that was all due to the Farmers market being open. The line moved quickly, but unfortunately the wait to get your drink did not. The problem lies with the way the drinks were lined up by one person that re-organized by a different person this meant that our drinks kept getting shuffled around. They would call out drinks of people that just ordered versus those of us that had been waiting were left just waiting to hear those magical words which today was Medium Iced Vanilla Latte. To make matters worse the girlfriends chai latte never came until it was brought to their attention again. The place has free wi-fi and is definitely a hipster hang out and maybe that's why my drink took extra long I am definitely not a regular. I got it on a baguette fresh and toasted all the ingredients were fresh including the avocado, it was nice and green. New Wave was a regular stop pre COVID. I went here recently and while I missed some things I was very appreciative of their efficiency and attention to safety. They have a very limited menu and I really miss their bagels; however they have streamlined their service to ensure a quick and safe experience. All items are clearly marked and prices are shown. The sizes for both hot and cold drinks are displayed. There are reminders to wear a mask, don't touch anything, and no cash accepted. There is no leaning over the counter, grabbing straws or sugar, or using the restroom. I appreciate the clear guidelines. With that being said, service was still friendly and the drinks were tasty. New Wave is my Logan Square coffee shop go to for all things, from self dates, friend dates, regular dates to art brainstorm sessions. It can get busy but I usually find a place to sit. I love the casual, no judgement vibe and always fun rotating art on the walls. Feels like you're walking into a friend's living room. The sign on the outside window (as of this writing)... New Wave Coffee Is Open-Ish. "Open-ish" and it has 16 reviews!? Jeepers creepers, Logan Square DID need a coffee shop BADLY! Admittedly, I don't come to this neighborhood all that often...but make special trips to check stuff out. Loving free wifi, the area, new coffeeshops, Metropolis (yeeee, giddy), and bathrooms with real graffiti art...it was a must-see. The hipster ratio is high, ain't no lie. However, I do not find this to be a bad thing. In fact, I enjoyed quite much. It could potentially double as a Macbook store, there are so many of them in here. Many bike/messenger bags. Pop art that is ironic, yet strangely comfortable. Pink/black tiled floors. Shiny tables. All the hipster love, but very much missing the pretension. Awesome, I like my coffee with real cream, splenda and a bit of reality...thankyoumuch. Oh, yeah...tables! Hardly to be found, this place was jammed on a Wednesday at 3pm...insanity! But, like a good insanity, because they need to live long and prosper. They were booking in new tables for the expansive space as I worked. Good call, very good call. Metropolis coffee: be still my little caffeine-joltin' heart. Smallish food menu. Sandwiches with cool names like "Flash Dance." I giggled each time the counter guy had to wander around yelling out..."Flash Dance, anyone have a Flash Dance!?" I so wanted to say yes, and break it down...but alas...I was working, ok!? I did enjoy a bowl of the tomato feta soup, perfect to ward off the chilly day. Long and short of it: This place is pretty stellar in terms of coffee shops. Ever come across someone who is the perfect embodiment of a stereotype? Like maybe you meet a fella named Vinny Italiano from Jersey who looks and acts like Big Pussy from The Sopranos, reeks of marinara, and you think to yourself, "Blimey. I didn't know people like that actually existed," and you're just shocked but not shocked at the same time? New Wave Coffee is kinda like that except, you know, as a cafe. Picture an urban coffeehouse in your head. Go ahead. I'll wait. Is there a bohemian, maybe even hip, vibe? Do artists use the space to hang their works and/or is someone playing music? Are the baristas a touch snooty or aloof, and are they only working there until they can pursue their real passion which is to make radio documentaries kinda like This American Life but not really like This American Life? Do you get a general sense that everyone is saddled with substantial debt from their undergrad days where they majored in creative writing or political science at some Midwestern liberal arts college? I thought so. You just pictured New Wave Coffee in comically accurate detail. Like the Double R in Twin Peaks is the Platonic ideal of a diner or the Peach Pit is of...well...a diner in Beverly Hills, New Wave is the same for coffeehouses. Their wares are well plied at New Wave. Metropolis coffee is used which is nice, and the baristas I came across made me excellent cappuccinos. The actual space is gigantic but it doesn't have the lunchroom/church basement feel of Mercury Cafe--especially during the morning when it is nearly impossible to find a seat. The Nintendo setup is well documented, and the only way it could be better is if they had two Nintendos. Some guy was whiling away the morning with Dr. Mario when I showed up, and I was more than a bit jealous. If you have read my other Yelp reviews (hahahahahahahahah...unless you're my dear mother I don't presume you have. Hi, mom!) you'll notice I pay particular attention to bathrooms. You know what I've come to realize? Cafes ALWAYS have the best bathrooms: Soma in Bloomington, Indiana? Dazzling bathroom. Bridgeport Coffee Company? A bathroom you could take home to mother. New Wave, too, has an excellent bathroom with its graffiti-covered walls and roomy dimensions. Surely if ever a place needed a solid bathroom it's at a coffeehouse or maybe a diabetic group home since these bathrooms are where you're going to spend a good deal of your waking life. Thus, the bathroom at a coffeehouse says a lot about the joint, and New Wave gets a firm pat on the back for a loo well done. New Wave is definitely worth the trip. If you own a Macbook, ride a bike as a matter of orthodoxy, or have ever thought about doing an MFA in creative writing (even for a second!) then it's probably compulsory that you frequent New Wave. YES! I came here last night for the Logan Square Knitters Meetup and it was fabulous! I really enjoy the look of the whole place - it's obviously very nouvelle vague. There's a black and yellow checkered floor, exposed brick, great artwork and framed album covers from the New Wave greats. There's two entrances (one on Logan and one on Milwaukee) so it's kind of like two shops in one that meet together in the middle near the cash register and the bathroom. There's a giant TV with free NES if you feel the need to go back to your video game heyday. I sampled some Blood Orange Tea and the Vegan Potato Leek Soup - both delicious. I've never had a potato leek broth soup so it was new, interesting and very tasty. They have a lot of vegetarian/vegan menu items, which is a plus for you herbivores out there. The coffee smelled great though I didn't need that much caffeine that late in the evening. I will definitely be back to sample more of the goods. I also met the manager/owner Zach and he was super awesome. He was friendly and mingling with the customers, which is always A+ in my book. Word is he's bringing in more vegan items and pastries - yum! He obviously takes pride in his shop and I really like that about any business. First, let me say, I am sorry to the owners and employees of this local business. I wish I liked you guys, it would be so nice for both of us. However... New Wave coffee. If you like New Wave music, this does not mean you will like this large, ineffectively laid out coffee shop. It feels like a college cafeteria trying to be super hip. They have an NES in there. I love Nintendo, but somehow it comes off as asinine. I just hate it inside this place. Sometimes I stop in to get coffee, but it's only out of convenience! And, almost always, I regret it. Very, very rarely, do I get decent service. Even if I do, I have to evaluate it in my head, and think, was that really good service, or was it just good for this shit-hole? Anyway, you obviously can tell I loathe this place, and it has a lot to do with decent coffee being ruined by everything else a coffee shop is supposed to be - quiet, comfy, and nice - so I won't continue on, but just know that I'd rather walk 2 miles barefoot to a McDonald's than come here. Believe it or not I was just denied service at New Wave Coffee in Logan Square. Yes, that right. I tried to order a half decaf quad shot espresso over ice and was told no. Normally, I would just leave if they refuse to make my drink but I since I was having a business meeting later in the morning I decided to try ordering an alternative. I asked if I could order a light water iced Americano and once again was told no. Apparently, this business has decided it is just fine to deny customers drinks they don't deem to be appropriate. Perhaps I need to get my taste buds examined? No, I think they should have their business philosophy examined. While it was a hassle to reschedule my meeting I refuse to patronize a business that does not put the customer first. My drink requests were not unreasonable and the individual waiting on me didn't even attempt to be accommodating or explain their ridiculous policy. I'm not sure why the owners of this coffee shop feel they should tell me what is right for my taste buds. As a side note, the place could use a makeover. If they are trying for a cool, laid back vibe, they fall short. When it comes to interior decoration, the opinion of a heterosexual male should rarely be trusted. But on Yelp, where my opinions count, I can be totally direct: everything about this place offends my aesthetic sensibilities. Pink, yellow, and pale blue painted walls. Stackable pleather chairs. Fake metal plastic tables. It's not a stretch to say that the ambience at McDonalds or Pizza Hut compare favorably. Really. And that's a shame because the space itself could be beautiful, a big open space with broad windows on both Milwaukee and Logan, some exposed brick and exposed vents. No bookshelves, no newspapers, no Chicago Reader, no Onion, no books. No books? No reading, actually, unless you count the internet. The customers are mostly twenty-something, and the majority have laptops. And that's okay- maybe this is just one of those things that distinguishes Generation Y from Generation X. But I'm a child of the '70s and proud of it. Coffeeshops to me are a place to relax in a homely, even old-fashioned environment. Is it me or is the customer service getting worse? Ordered a bar drink on a busy Sunday morning during the farmers market. Patiently waited a plus amount of time to get my drink. I hear my drink called out and step to the counter where a women who came in after me picks up my drink. I politely ask if she mistakenly picked up my order, when the barista tells me to calm down. "This is not your order, yours is next. Just calm down!" I in no way raised my voice or created a fuss. This is the behavior I am starting to see after being regular here and I will not be returning. I am not happy with New Wave Coffee. I have tried on 3 occasions to order coffee/get something to eat here. All 3 times I have left after waiting in line for 30 minutes. My curiosity has turned to irritation now. I went in to get a croissant from the newly opened La Boulangerie (French bakery next door) but had to order a DOZEN because of some no-compete clause with New Wave Coffee! Are you kidding me??? If I don't want to wait more than 30 minutes for a coffee from you, why on earth would I wait more than 30 minutes for a croissant that is NOT EVEN FROM A FRENCH BAKERY?!?! 4-stars for what I thought New Wave was all about. Minus 3 stars for the crazy croissant ban they've enacted on their neighbors to the North, La Boulangerie. I, for one, don't venture into New Wave for food. Just coffee. I was, however, quite looking forward to frequenting the new place on the corner, La Boulangerie, for a croissant. Then I learned New Wave is prohibiting them from selling croissants, through a non-compete clause. I didn't even know New Wave had croissants. Do they? I might as well hit Starbucks next time, instead of New Wave. As much as I would rather support a locally-owned small business...why should I if New Wave isn't willing to? This one-star review is me waving goodbye to New Wave. Unless, of course, they reconsider their silly croissant ban. No costly lawyers need be involved. A gentleman's agreement would certainly suffice. It's not like the police will be sniffing around for signs of puffed pasty dough. Perhaps interesting for the owner of New Wave to note, I would actually stop by New Wave MORE often if they sold croissants at La Boulangerie. I personally don't think of New Wave as a destination for French pastries. Soy lattes, sure. I would delight in a New Wave latte to wash down a delicious croissant from La Boulangerie. As others have suggested, why not start selling La Boulangerie croissants at New Wave? And New Wave coffee at La Boulangerie? Such a decision could turn a sticky situation into a fruitful compromise. read more
