I'm just reviewing Gaslight to let people know they use almond milk automatically in their matcha latte. I'm allergic. I got duped the first time and had to spit it out in a trash can. I know to ask for another milk now, but they always spend the time telling me almond milk is what they normally use and ask if that's okay. To clarify, they don't tell you it's almond milk UNLESS you ask for another milk. Then they ask if they can just use almond milk instead of what you ordered. I can't figure out why a shop would use a very common allergen milk automatically in a drink that almost always defaults to dairy milk. But then I saw that they make their matcha in a blender bottle lol. So it's probably because dairy milk foams up when you aggressively shake it like that. Efficiency, I guess? That also means the matcha is really grainy. I've heard bad things about their other teas too. I guess it's just one of those shops that wants you to suffer if you don't drink coffee. That's the vibe it gives anyway. My wife says the coffee is top notch. It's super quiet in there. So if you want to chat over a tasty tea, you're gonna have a bad time. But if you want to quietly work or study in hardback chairs and drink good coffee, it's a dream come true. read more

Okay, full disclosure, I'm a bit of a bougie boy. I try to hide it, but I'm a sucker for a small source brew and an artisanal pastry. Stopped in here for a quick caffeine fix. My husband got the cold brew and I got a chai latte with oat milk. They use Rishi chai. The drink was good. Husband says the cold brew was good. The pastry display was completely empty which was a little bummer. It's right on the corner of Fullerton and Milwaukee so street parking could be difficult. read more

We came here for a quick cup of coffee. The staff here was ok. Not very welcoming. No smiles. The coffee a was good though. I ordered a medium latte. The price was fair and the location is great. The coffee shop is cute with a lot of seating available. There are also many outlets and Wi-Fi available making it a great place to do work. I got an oat milk latte which was good but could have been a bit warmer. For oat milk they also use the minor figures brand. Also when I searched online it looked like they had vegan pastries but they do not offer any vegan pastry options or vegan options for food in general. Would definitely come back here more often if they did offer good vegan pastries. Right off the blue line so easy to get to if taking public transit. read more

I purchased Gaslight's beans through their website before so I was excited to visit the actual store. The store got an industrial feel and the vibes were very casual. The barista was very friendly. We got a 12-oz latte for here and a 12-oz cold brew to go. The latte was good - not like great but good enough for a community coffee shop and daily coffee runs. The foam was thick but we could still taste the espresso and the espresso was good. The cold brew was just okay - coffee taste was too light. read more

I guess we're finally going to have to find a coffee shop. We've been coming by Gaslight for the last several years, living a few blocks away. The second to last time my family came by, I was served a cup of tea that was completely cold. Mistakes happen. I only mention this strange lack of detail to give the next example some context. The last time we came by (earlier this week), I grabbed a bag of coffee beans. Both my wife and I noticed the beans and the brewed coffee had a bitter but watery smell and taste. We've never had this issue with their beans, so we assumed it must be an isolated roasting error. I noticed that Felicia S. on 6/17/2023 had a very similar comment. I went back this morning to see if I could get another bag to replace it, and the person at the counter said it couldn't be done because 'he didn't know the policy' of exchanging it. I was very disappointed they couldn't have at least examined the bag of beans. I left the bag there with the hopes they would check it out and realize I wasn't being unreasonable. It's ok for a business to miss quality control on an item, as long as they try to remedy it a polite way. went in to buy some beans and was offered a friendly free espresso shot. I do have to say though that be warned you should mention your preferences before buying beans. I'm very anti-acidic with coffee and the shot itself was one of the most battery acid like shots I've ever had. some may enjoy this, I just don't. their beans are clearly high quality and well roasted but they don't really state the roast (dark, medium, light) all the beans I bought are light roasted, super sour if not dialed in properly for espresso. Great on my moccamaster though. I'm more of a chocolatey nutty espresso person. Don't really care for fruit forward roasts. Altogether if you're a coffee fiend I'd recommend stopping in and scooping a bag of beans... just make sure you know your preferences and ask the nice folks there for recommendations. Coffee shops are a dime a dozen in Chicago so it's rare to find one that stands out. This is one of those that do! Their expresso is handmade to order and FANTASTIC! The pastries they offer (No food besides them) are delicious as well. I'm not sure if they make them on site or order them from a local bakery but either way they taste fresh and delicious. The good: I LOVE that they have for-here glasses! I feel like I waste so many plastic cups of when I post up somewhere to do work and get coffee. The place is well air conditioned with strong wifi. The bad: I'm pretty sure they use robusta coffee. Other people seem not to mind it as much but I can't stand it. Robusta is cheaper, higher in caffeine, and much more bitter/acidic than arabica. They don't say on their website whether they use robusta/arabica, and usually if somewhere doesn't say, that means they use robusta, since arabica is widely regarded as a better tasting bean overall. The ugly: standardized testing vibes inside. I thought this might be a remnant of covid social distancing but looking back at old reviews it seems like they've had this seating since before 2020. I think this place would really benefit from some more welcoming and comfier seating options and arabica coffee. read more

Coffee is always a must, even if we're on our way to lunch... and Gaslight was on the way. Restaurants were starting to close up due to COVID-19 breaking out in the US so our coffee options were limited. Gaslight was open but takeout only. Coffee menu seems pretty straightforward and basic, although there are daily specials/offerings you can consider. I ordered a latte to get my day started, but chose not to order food. I've never written a Yelp! review before, but I can't just stand idly by after having witnessed an egregious act of hostility towards one's customers. I know that somewhere within the staff of this cafe there is a barista reading this, smirking, knowing that her subtle plot to infuriate the lames was victorious. "Oh my God, he wrote a Yelp! review!?! How bored do you have to be???" she scoffs. The last time I went to Gaslight was a Sunday afternoon in late November a few years ago. I ordered two coffees and a couple doughnuts. Being that they were delicious and the vibe was nice, I ordered two more coffees to follow that.... Then it all went sideways when they played Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas is You" five times in a row. Once, maybe twice is cool. Five times you're picking a fight. I've never been actively trolled by a business before and to know that I was triggered by their provocations leaves me feeling slightly embarrassed. However, if good people stand idly by while such atrocities are committed, that is when the insidious roots social ills take hold. They must be combated at every turn and uprooted or, before you know it, they will be playing "Sandstorm" at funerals. Upon the very beginning of the fifth play of Ms. Carey's holiday epic, I leapt from my chair, the burden too much for me to bare. I could not read a word, I couldn't hear a thing my date was saying, my coffee had grown insipid: all I could hear was Mariah and all I wanted for Christmas was to make it stop. At my last nerve I approached the counter. "I'll be that guy," I stated with exasperation, knowing that I had lost the internal battle to remain strong in the face of great incitement. "Are you going to play this song forever?" I asked. "Not forever," she replied with an unforgettable sneer. Without speaking I turned and went back to my table. I grabbed my jacket and stood at my table, waiting for my date to gather her things. My time at that coffee shop had ended, I would not be made to suffer a sixth spin of that record. The song continued on while I waited, then, just as I reached the door, but not a second sooner, it stopped. I fought the trolls and the trolls won. This is all silly, I admit. It does speak to a certain amount of emptiness in one's existence to be so irritated by such an experience as to recant it years later in the form of a Yelp! review. But I work in hospitality and hospitality is important. When you do something like playing a song, much less THIS particular song, repeatedly, you are willfully admitting that the guest experience has become secondary. Secondary to what, I don't dare guess. The type of psychoanalysis necessary to decipher why someone would play such a song repeatedly on a rainy afternoon in November is beyond the scope of my analysis. But I know that, whatever the motivation, the guest was not considered at all and such inclinations are indicative of a place that might just think a bit too highly of itself. read more

I've been wanting to try this place and finally got the chance. They have an expansive menu of lattes and drinks and also have beans and merch for sale. I tried a lavender latte (and added) honey. It was delicious. You can tell they use quality beans flavorings and that they drink is carefully crafted. It wasn't too sweet to where it overpowered the coffee. There was lots of space to work whether you come alone or with a group of people. Coming during the daytime means lots of sunlight so grab a seat by the window. read more

I saw customers that were behind me get their drinks before mine. You had a rude response when I asked about my drink and gave me attitude. Please don't put your own stress on the customers. Their beans and in-house roasting are high level and the cortados we ordered were really well executed. A second cortado, ordered decafe was also especially good, so this counts as yet another high recommendation type place for the coffee fiend. Ham and cheese croissant was really delicious but they had to way to heat it, so either there is no oven or oven was down so could have been nirvana on that one. Ambience is really hip, barista cordial and efficient. Music and space were really nice. Was catching up with a friend and couldn't have been a better experience to enhance the encounter. They need to calm it down a bit on the bean price; bent my friend over for $62 for 2lbs of roasted beans. Nevertheless, what little defects there are don't drag down the overall experience enough to deny a worthwhile business the opportunity to serve more clients and improve their craft. read more

So I live relatively close now, and an update is due. While it's still fairly difficult to get a seat, I dig this spot. The coffee is good, the food is good (better options then most shops), and they recently upgraded many of their tables and chairs. Internet never seems to be an issue here, and the staff has grown on me (for the most part). They also finally added some curtains so if you are sitting by the windows in the afternoon you aren't constantly blinded. I give them 4.5 stars (subtracting a 1/2 star for the bathrooms which could use a little updating). Bonus for the free espresso shot when you buy one of their bags of coffee. Came here at late afternoon for a good cup of Joe at the recommendation of my friend Tess. She was right, as always and they do have excellent pour over coffee and lattes. This place is very relaxed and the baristas are exceptionally friendly. We unfortunately did not order any pasteries because it was mid to late afternoon and we wanted to eat dinner in about two hours. This roaster also serves cold brews, chai, hot cocoa, etc. They also have a kitchen as they offer sandwiches, cucumber toast, "Gaslight breakfast" special, baked goods, etc. They have a good amount of seating (maybe 7 tables) for you to do work at and there is a nice bench that has an outlet to enable you to plug in and charge up. At various stations throughout, you see people studying or just drinking and powering up. They also have interesting wall hangings as I saw a deer head complete with antlers and a goose in flight. i thought this place was good, but not great. i ordered a kouign amann and a whole cortado, which came out to just north of $11 after tip. i think that's a pretty good price! the kouign amann was tasty, but it didn't wow me. the cortado wasn't quite right, but they do have a solid espresso that they use (plus, like, i'm fully aware that a cortado is a tough drink to master and ordering one is always gonna be a roll of the dice). the staff were efficient, and there's plenty of seating. the comfort of that seating varies, but just when you think the place is full you find more chairs! that's a strong plus to me, as someone who likes a "for here" order. overall, i think gaslight is a good cafe, and i would come back. if you're someone with the means for a daily coffee on the way to work (i am not), i think this would great for that. much, much better quality than a chain place without breaking the bank. i have other favorites, though! read more

Ordered a small hot coffee on a wet gray day. Coffee was good but just lukewarm. I asked if they could warm it up and the barista said they had no way of warming it up. If that was the case the coffee should have been hot to begin with, not tepid. read more

Coffee snob...they're doing a fine job here. Quality roast, and there is more parking in this area, compared to other nearby shops - which is a huge plus. I like the multiple bag sizes, so I can try different beans at home. I'm not kidding, this is probably the only coffee shop in chicago where you feel like you just want to write the book you always wanted to write. That's what their coffee will do to you - it'll make you creative with tons of inspiration flowing in your brain as you slowly drink their delicious coffee. The scenery is also very inviting and the staff are very kind and helpful. If you do come here, I strongly suggest you start with their latte. I've chosen to call it: the cheerful poet! I like this place, if I'm up for some noise and some young Logan Square vibe. This coffee shop isn't quiet AT ALL if you're one of the serious working bees attempting to get some study or work done. I personally think it's cute hang-out, get-together kind of place since they have various sizes of tables for solo travelers, as well as for a group of five (5). The coffee is good and prices are alright for the Logan Square standard ($7.65 after tax for a croissant and a medium cappuccino). This place has a plenty of natural lighting and ample opportunities for chilling and people-watching. Rosa J. is a professional people-watcher. Unfortunately, she doesn't get paid for doing this. Roasted: came here because I couldn't drink the coffee at the last place and was really hoping for a better experience. This is a quiet cafe in Logan square - kind of reminds me of a 50's diner converted into a coffee shop. They don't offer any sugar free options which is common among the third wave shops. The latte was not good. The espresso was bitter - I struggled to drink the latte and sadly didn't enjoy it. My latte art was sad - I appreciate the attempt but didn't get even a flower. Nice to have for here mugs. Has to put Splenda in my latte but that still didn't make it enjoyable. They used Guatemala for their daily espresso which could be partly why I didn't enjoy it. Unroasted: okay let's try this again. Walking in it looks and feels like your pops den. The staff was friendly but counting down the minutes to get out of here. Love the 50s diner style coffee bar. Right now I'm loving Gaslight. They're one of the only coffee shops in the area that has stayed open for pickup. Yes, sometimes I like other people to make me my fun coffee drinks, especially on the weekends. And then I sip my coffee as I enjoy my daily walk. I've been loving their cold brew and I've tried a few of their lattes. Everything has been delicious. I also appreciate how they have markers throughout the shop for people to stand that keeps people 6 feet apart. They've been doing this from the beginning.
