Vanilla Suburb Nitro - with Vanilla & Cocoa
    Anthony D.

We stopped by because we were in the neighborhood. I've been to several other Dark Matter Coffee shops and they always have great artwork and great coffee. We tried the Vanilla Suburb Nitro and the Agave Latte. The nitro was good, but definitely bitter so if that's not your thing you probably won't like it. The Agave Latte was sweet and creamy. I preferred that one a bit more. The place has plenty of seating but not many outlets, so make sure your laptop is charged if you plan on staying for a while.

This coffee shop will have you feeling Electric! I've been here several times over the past few years and my rating still holds. I stopped in here on a weekend and there was a steady stream of customers. They have a good amount of seating and offer mugs if you get your coffee to stay! The inside is very quirky with the fun lighting and mural; very much the vibe of Dark Matter Coffee. We got Nitro Cold Brew (really good) and cappuccino with oat milk (also very solid). They offer a range of dairy milks (and available on the bar for you to use). Three coffees came out to ~$15 which in this city is super solid! The staff is really great and quick (they even made some really cool latte art!) Overall, I would definitely recommend stopping in and getting stuck in this mud!

    Mayan Mocha

I ordered the Mayan Mocha and it was perfect. Very caffeinated and not too sweet. One of the best Mayan Mocha's I've had; it had a strong flavor but not too overpowering where you can't taste the coffee. I love the unique drink options and will definitely come back to try them. The workers are very welcoming and take their time to make the drinks.

Basing this interview solely on the Rajas Empanada that I had. I loved it overall and thought it was very tasty. The outside breading was not insanely thick so there was a good amount of stuffing. I liked the hotsauce too. I do wish it was a bit crispier on the outside because that would've given it the last bit it needed to be perfection.

Dark Matter is awesome! This is the second location I visited. I was recently on a weekend trip to Chicago and was able to meet up with one of my high school best friends on my way out of town. We met here at Dark Matter for a couple of hours and had a great time. The vibes and decor here are great! The staff was super friendly- you can tell they have plenty of regulars. To drink I had the Mayan Mocha which was iced and I added oatmilk. It was really good because they have great quality coffee that is really delicious - but the flavors didn't come out how I had hoped. The Mayan mocha has chocolate, agave, cayenne, and cinnamon. If I were to return I would get this again but ask for a bit more spices. I also had a vegan chocolate donut. It was delicious- couldn't even tell it was vegan. Overall we had a great time and would definitely return!

Agave Latte And Taos Bakes Bar

Another place around here that has this great coffee. Dark Matter has this shop called the Electric Mud. It's hard to know what this name means, but it sounds cool though. Basically there's only this one small room for a few customers if that, and the menu is small also. That doesn't mean it's bad of course, as the coffee is the most important part. Came here recently one morning and got some coffee and one of the few things they had as food. It has about the same menu at all locations. There's not a whole lot to choose from, but it's good no matter what kind of coffee you get though. It has several choices of cold and hot brews. The best one so far is the Agave Latte. It's about $4 for a regular cup. That's kind of overpriced but it's still not as bad as other places. It's made with agave, almond syrup, dark chocolate, and the Matter Cinnamon Blend. Mostly the food options are only the Taos Bakes bars, which are good to munch on between sips. It's about $3 each. These come in a few vegan flavors and these are also fairly healthy. Good stuff as far as coffee. It's kind of expensive for the amount you get which is the worst thing about it. There needs to be some more food options but the Taos Bakes bars are good for morning snacking.

Great vibe, kind staff, clean location, quick service and delicious coffee. The regular coffee is piping hot and smooth. Dropped a star because my husband got the specialty bourbon coffee latte and it just didn't taste good. Too much bourbon flavor, not enough sweetness, all in all just not great. Plain coffee is where it's at! Plus though baked goods looked awesome.

I stopped by here to get my morning coffee before running errands as I am a huge fan of dark matter coffee. I got the vanilla suburbs natural cold brew and it gave me the kick I needed after not getting a good night sleep and having to be up early. This coffee shop is located right off the western line which makes it really convenient if you are taking public transport and stop here. The quality of the coffee is strong. The service is always nice and quick. I definitely want to try one of their signature latte flavors next time.

Atmosphere and staff are 12/10. This is the coolest spot to spend some time. Enjoy the great tunes playing, 3D art popping out of the wall, and gorgeous murals. The coffee was top notch but does have a very unique profile that is maybe not for everyone. If you're a coffee snob this might be the place for you.

I've been in Chicago for three days and for three days in a row I've come here for my morning coffee! I have quite a drive for what I am in town for and this is the only none national brand coffee shop open in the area early enough for me to go to and I'm so happy that it's this spot! I have really liked the iced coffee I've gotten the past two days and the almond croissants and amazing! I really love that they have oat milk out on the stir-in counter. I have never seen that at another shop - such amazing customer service to have an non dairy option for everyone! The staff has been very kind and attentive the past three mornings. I will absolutely come again next time I'm in town!

I ordered 5 coffees one morning, and all the register guy did was write a few names on some cups and placed it down. I understand tipping culture is a divided topic of discussion, but at the end of the day, it is OPTIONAL. After pressing the skip button from what I believe to be non-tip worthy service, he threw a fit and said "Wow you're serious? After I did all that?" Meanwhile all he did was write names on cups. Now I would understand if he was the barista working hard to pump out the coffees, but two lovely ladies were in the back doing that. He shooed me and my friend out of line as we were still processing what he just said. The next customer orders and he had the audacity to talk about us to them while we're 5 feet away. Delusional as he was, he had the nerve to say we were holding up the line and made him do "all that work", and I could promise you, we knew exactly what we wanted to order the second we got up, and took no longer than 45 seconds. We also witnessed he got into it with another customer, so it seems like he's the problem here. Most wild service I have ever received, all for some milky coffees. I ended up tipping the lovely ladies in the back though. Be warned. There are much better spots.

My new favorite coffee shop... ever?? It was so good I managed to fit it in TWICE in a short trip…read more And have NOT shut up about it since I came back!! Military latte ($7.25)-- matcha and espresso mixed together with milk I don't know what sorcery they put in this but it's SO GOOD!! like matcha and espresso had a baby idk but they kept all the good parts of each other and balance each other out. For example, the matchy isn't earthy or chalky like some places or fake like the Starbucks one. The espresso isn't sour or burnt. And somehow when you combine both of them it's this perfect mellow blend but has the slight bitterness of both matcha/espresso where you're like "ah yes it's not just milk" that flavor really pulls through. But again it's mellow and blends together sooooo well like perfect mesh my goodness. Doesn't overpower doesn't feel like you're drinking matcha and coffee at the same time. It just becomes like a new thing altogether and that thing is glorious. The first time I got it iced (and the black camo latte hot) and all I could think about was how much better it would be hot.... So I had to come back for it !! And it ISSSS better hot. I enjoy hot lattes the hot milk and lack of ice is smoother and blends it together better or something. Obviously the iced version wasn't bad because I still had a great time... but when I came back for the second time and got it hot like YESSS THIS IS IT !!! Black camo latte ($7.25)-- same as Military but instead of matcha it's hojicha mixed with espresso! I took sips of this (as opposed to it being my own drink) and thought it was good! Really depends on if you like the taste of matcha or hojicha more. This one is deeper and richer, more earthy. Maybe even caramelized roast kinda flavor? Buuuut I know hojicha isn't for everyone so take it with a grain of salt. The combo with espresso is magical though like whatever ratio they're using is so perfect. It really blends together so well. ANDDDD here the coffee:milk ratio is so good!! No milky watered down lattes! I'm so used to having to add espresso shots or asking for less milk because coffee shops really be wildin in this economy but this place has a good ratio! Like yes wow we still have good things I love this for us. Matcha lemonade ($7)-- So absurdly sour I took one sip and that was enough for me!!! You really have to be a lemonade person like if that's your drink of choice to quench your thirst on a hot day then this is for you!! If you don't drink lemonade on the regular then I really wouldn't bother. I think this is a collab with a charity or something? Up your vitamin C for a good cause I guess. Cortado ($4.50)-- Espresso and milk, small cup, good test of their espresso and yesssss it passes with flying colors. And again, this place has their milk ratio down to a science. Perfectly balanced, not too much milk and you still taste all the coffee. Love love loveeeeee this place and would absolutely love an LA location. Until then, guess I'll have to plan another Chicago trip to get this goodness again !!!

I think Sawada is a little more overhyped than I would've liked…read more The Military Latte was pretty good, and I really appreciated that they offered macadamia milk! That said, the matcha itself wasn't necessarily the best matcha I've ever had. I think there was just too much milk in the drink, so I couldn't really enjoy the matcha and hojicha notes. It was enjoyable, but not memorable enough to justify all the hype - or the price. I really liked the ambiance, and the baristas were genuinely kind. They were also very willing to adjust or remake a drink when needed, which I appreciated. Overall, it's a cute spot with great service, but I genuinely cannot accept the price-to-drink ratio. I'm glad I tried it, but I don't think it lived up to the hype.

There was already a small line of guests with the same idea, but we were able to get on the waitlist. While waiting, we checked out the small coffee shop inside the gallery and browsed the furniture, which helped pass the time. Our wait was about an hour before being escorted to our table in the courtyard. Initially, we were placed at a low coffee table with couch seating. It's a cool lounge style setup, especially for drinks, but not ideal for a meal. It would have been pretty awkward trying to eat comfortably. We asked to be moved and were told that table preferences should be requested when joining the waitlist. Since it was my first time visiting, I wasn't aware of that, and it also wasn't asked by the hostess. Thankfully, they were able to accommodate us and moved us to a table in the wine cellar. The wine cellar had a completely different vibe, dark and moody, compared to the bright, airy courtyard with its beautiful glass ceiling and natural light. We ordered the lobster roll and the RH Burger, both with fries. The food came out fairly quickly and was well-presented. The lobster roll was served on a buttery brioche with just the right amount of seasoning, and the burger was juicy and flavorful. Overall, I had a great experience and would definitely visit again.
