I decided I was in the mood for an Italian hero and checked Yelp and decided on New York Super Subs. The location is not much to speak of one small table basically only take out. I ordered an Italian sandwich regular size. The service was excellent and the gentleman behind the counter was very friendly and very helpful. As far as Italian sandwich's go it was just ok nothing special. I did not care for the bread that much and the meat was just ok. I probably would not go again at least not for an Italian hero. The food would get 2 stars in my opinion but the service was 5 stars all the way. Overall I have to give it 3 stars as the food itself was just ok. read more

Good place to get a quality satisfying sandwich. I believe there was a location in Fox Chapel, but when I visited, it was closed. The Squirrel Hill location has many of the classic sandwiches, like Ruebens, Cheese, chicken Florentine, meatball, among others. I decided to try their cheesesteak sandwich (not the sub), their eclair, and the cannoli. I thought the sandwich was good, but a bit pricy. Their cheesesteak sub is probably a better deal, and you can get in a 1 ft or 2 ft (super) size. The meat was a good texture, but I would have liked a bit more cheese. The bun was nice and fluffy, soaked with steak juice on the bottom. Good amount of tasty mushrooms. You can also get the sandwich on a croissant. It was served with a tiny portion of coleslaw, which was tasty but way too minuscule. I also ordered a pickle wedge as one of my sides, but did not receive it. They have an in-house bakery from what I am aware of. They pride themselves on their cannolis, but I found the vanilla to be very average. It was not a very crispy shell. The filling was bland and just vaguely sweet. It tasted almost like whipped cream. Nothing special. The eclair was similarly only okay. The filling on the inside (custard) was very good. But, the chocolate topping was not thick enough. And, the eclair dough was standard, almost cakey. Probably not worth $4; I've had better at the Oakmont Bakery. This place also makes cookies, brownies, shortcakes, and other desserts. All in all, New York Super Subs probably can't compare to the New York delis. They make fairly good sandwiches, and they may be a good food stop if you like big sandwich (and are willing to pay the price). Their baked goods aren't anything special. read more

If you're looking for tasty sandwiches, this is a good spot. They have a pretty classic selection -- Italian hoagies, ruebens, turkey clubs, meatball subs, BLTs, everything you would expect -- plus a few interesting offerings like the buffalo chicken sandwich. Everything was good. If you're sticker shocked when you look at the prices, don't worry -- you do get plenty of sub for the cost. Their "whole" hoagies are two foot longs, and their "half" is a regular footlong. So keep that in mind when ordering! read more

This place is pretty new to Squirrel Hill I think. Uncle Sam's Subs has been an institution in the neighborhood for so long but New York Super Subs is a great option! We got take out from here recently and enjoyed our subs. My wife got the chicken salad, which was very dense and tasty (though not much lettuce). I got the buffalo chicken sub, which was less dense but also had a nice zingy flavor. The subs were both 12 inches and reasonable prices but they were very thin so in the end it didn't feel like a ton of sub. They do offer 24-inch versions of all subs so maybe I will try that next time. Take out was very quick too - our order was ready by the time we got to the store in just about 10 minutes. read more

On Sunday night, after a long day of driving, my family was hungry for some cheesesteaks. Normally, Uncle Sam's is our go-to, but they were already closed when we called at 6:15, so we decided to try New York Super Subs again. Our first experience had been tasty, but not quite enough to take on Uncle Sam's spot in our takeout rotation. We ordered a super cheesesteak sub and a small cheesesteak with just beef and cheese for our picky eating 6 year old. We also grabbed cannoli for dessert. The sub was delicious, and the baguette style bread is a bit of an elevated element. The cheesy beefy mushroomy pepper and onion sub definitely hit the spot, and helped counteract the car-tired hangriness that was hitting us all hard. The kiddo enjoyed his sub as well, which was a relief. The cannoli went over well too. In fact, we were asked why we only got the kiddo one cannoli and no fries. Welp, they don't have fries! But still, it was a tasty meal, and I'm glad to know that we have options for the next time Sunday evening rolls around and we didn't plan dinner. (I blame so many of those occasions on the Steelers! I decided to stop in this place when they had a sign out advertising a "Boston lobster roll." It was a huge mistake. Maybe their other food is good but I do not recommend the lobster rolls. When I walked in the first red flag was the long list of options for sauces and toppings. I said I wanted whatever was the most traditional or authentic version of the Boston lobster roll. The person making the sandwiches responded in an annoyed and exasperated tone that how would he know what an authentic Boston lobster roll is? It's literally how it's advertised on their menu. Call it a Pittsburgh lobster roll if you want to do your own thing. I asked for the mayo based sauce as that sounded the most authentic. They then decided to use hot butter instead and cook it on the grill and insisted this would be better and gave me the mayo based sauce on the side. I was not really given a choice in the manner and it was too late to protest. As a result the lobster was over cooked and to my horror I realized it was mixed in with imitation crabmeat! Given the price of around $20 this was not what I expected. They also added lettuce and tomato, which was another surprise. It came with a "side" of potato salad which you can see from the photo was the size of a condiment sauce rather than an actual side dish. read more

We got this as take out today. Subs were pretty good. Really good size- their "half" was a footlong! I wasn't prepared for that but now I have lunch for tomorrow. We also got one of their sandwiches (the corned beef) and that was pretty good as well. My only complaint is that they forgot some of my toppings on my sub, which I didn't realize until we got home. But everything that did make it on my sub tasted much better than other chain sub shops so I think we'll definitely be coming back! read more

If I was reviewing solely on the meatball sub, this would be a 5 star rating. It's the best meatball sub in the city. Those meatballs were homemade and tasted like Sunday supper. That has been added to my crave list. The Italian was good but not amazing. I asked, and paid for, extra pepper relish and there was barley any. I can not recommend this place enough! Their gluten free buns are the best I have ever tasted! Their meats and cheese are fresh, their sauces are homemade and they take great pride in the food they serve. I get the ham and cheese and it is perfect! My husband loves their veggie hoagie, and my mother in law loves the chicken cheesesteak and the prime rib cheesesteak. This is a new location, and they have been very busy and are still trying to work out the kinks, so there is sometimes a bit of a wait to get your food, but I promise it is so worth it! read more

I don't eat subs often, even though I've lived in Pittsburgh for 20 years and they are the local go-to food. Usually subs aren't anything to write home about: bread, meat, cheese... big deal, right? New York Super Subs has changed this for me. These are awesome sandwiches. Perfect balance of meat, bread and cheese every time. They have premium ingredients for my partner and I (the food snobs), like lobster and filet mignon. They have typical ingredients for the kids. They have amazing soups and desserts.I was blown away by the Greek meatball sub and couldn't stop eating the filet mignon sub, it has mushrooms and spinach! I went hungry and my wallet is leaner. Must be that I am spoiled living in a suburb where sub prices are half of what I normally see. The lobster was a disappointment with two chunks the size of half my thumb and some shredded meant (tablespoon or a bit more). Also menu says lemon and butter but it had old bay seasoning which I don't care for, I want to taste the lobster. Oh and the sides that come with?
