Had to do a pepperoni roll comparison before leaving Pittsburgh. The Atomic roll is huge! It's not a traditional roll with pepperoni stuffed in middle but more swirled in the dough (eats more like a bread). Hubs thought good but preferred the pepperoni up front & center. read more

Stopped in for a quick bite, I was very convinced after sampling their Atomic Pizza Roll. Although I did not buy one (because that thing is HUGE), I did get a sandwich. I ordered the Eggplant Hot Sausage, it was on point!! It was still a huge sandwich and so fulfilling. The hot sausage was so good and recommended by staff so I am glad I tried it out. This place also has sells a variety of pastas, sauces, baked goods, fresh meats, cheeses and more. If I lived here I think it'd be a regular spot for me. read more

Visiting Pittsburg, the Atomic Pepperoni Roll was found on many of our 'must eats' research lists. Drooling over photos & descriptions, they easily became our first desired eats! Stopping by for lunch take-out, we opted for the combo (1 Monster & 1 Atomic Pepperoni @$18)- massive rolls, absolutely had leftovers, easily two meals each- I had expected to have a short wait, figuring they'd be cooked/heated in the ovens nearby, but discovered they merely take pre-made rolls out of the fridge & stick them in the microwave- was a bit dismayed by this (& the grease level it produced) but they did still have a decent crispy crunch & ooey gooey cheese the breading was delicious with the right balance of fluffy & dense, well seasoned- though I would say they could have been stuffed a lot more. Very inconsistent portioning; Monster was 90% breading 10% pepperoni- I ended up stealing pepperoni from my atomic roll to balance it out a bit more- Atomic was better but still about 70% breading 30% filling- with both I found myself saving bread to use for leftover sandwiches the next day would still highly recommend! as someone who normally doesn't eat a lot of bread, I was devouring as much stomach would fill up on as possible and looking forward to my leftovers- would visit again to try other food dishes as well read more

This wasn't really what I expected but it was decent. I think that if I was going to buy some items to take home to make later I would provide a higher review, but I stopped in for lunch so my view is more on that. I thought the chicken Parmesan wasn't anything to write home about and wouldn't get it again, disappointed that it seemed like the just took a chicken patty, added some jar sauce and cheese. I would have liked it toasted or something. I did though find their pepperoni roll to be pretty phenomenal! This was the most random find I've ever stumbled upon. Was going to another spot and it was packed, so we walked around and saw this and we were hangry, so we needed fuel lol. The store is a cute old school one. Felt like we walked into one of those mom and pops shop. The staff was super friendly and we got the chicken cheese stake sandwiches and they were great! It's simple and yummy. You don't get the feeling that you ate something heavy. The bread was different. Maybe they make those too? I asked the staff and she told me they were know for their pepperoni rolls, but we had already ordered the sandwiches. They sell pizza dough!!! And this place is not expensive! I have been going to the Strip for years and years and often walked by this place. No more! It was Sunday, and most places on the North Side are closed. The Yelp reviews drew me in. Outside, they have a selection of sandwiches, cash only. But inside, they also have sandwiches and more that you can use a credit card. We ended up with the atomic and the pepperoni roll. This pepperoni roll is NOT like Mancini's done the street. This is filled with cheese and pepperoni. Hubby and I had it for dinner, and there is about 2/3 left. The atomic roll is also filled with goodies, meat, cheese, peppers and who knows what else. We had that for lunch and have 3/4 left. My favorite calzone place near OHare closed years ago and this, while not a calzone, comes the closest. Before I leave here, I am stocking up on a few of both and freezing them. I will NEVER pass by this place again. Our bus wasn't coming for 50 minutes. We walked back to the North Side in 95 degree heat. It was worth it. read more

Okay so if you are like me, samples are the best things about The Strip District, the Food Court at the mall, and Costco. I know 2020 has taken a lot from us, but the samples from Sunseri's still stand out in my mind after almost a year of not being able to have free food shoved at you for just existing. Matt and I took a splurge trip down to the strip on a vacation day in December. We walked in and knew we had to have some of that pepperoni roll we had tried on the street last summer. The lady that helped us let us know that the traditional rolls were so sold out for the time being, but would be ready in about an hour. But; they had atomic rolls ready right away. So--atomic scared me. I don't want to die, but I'm down for some spicy. The clerk said it wasn't crazy spicy, so we went ahead and got one. $8 got us a giant box heavy with crunchy dough, gooey cheese, banana peppers, jalapeños, I think, and loads of pepperoni. It was not spicy on my scale at all. Super flavorful though! Warm, it was awesome, I just grabbed a piece cold and it was still good! Go here. Be patient for samples. Get a pepperoni roll. Is there anything better than a meatball hoagie from Jimmy and Nino's? The answer is...well, maybe, BUT when in the Strip, this is my "go to" meal. When you enter, if you're lucky, you may be greeted by Jimmy sitting in his special chair. There are deli and grocery items available (even occasional desserts) but the spot to be is the hot food counter. The options are vast but as stated above - Meatball. Hoagie. You can get it with peppers and onions or just cheese. I've had both and it really just depends on my mood (and if there's a chance I'll be kissing anyone that day or not). Prices are reasonable. They accept cards but I think there's a $5 minimum transaction. If you want to grab an item to take home after, go with the monster pepperoni roll. You won't be disappointed. read more

BLUF: a letdown, especially when I brought friends to try it I have always told my friends that the sub sandwiches here are the best on the strip. But this visit, with a couple of them along with me to try for the first time, was a letdown. The meatballs were delicious as usual, but all of our sandwiches were pretty cold by the time we got them. We could have overlooked that but the bread used for our sandwiches was just terrible. I don't know if they switched to a different bread supplier or just under-baked these rolls, but they basically felt and tasted undercooked and fell apart as we ate, letting the sandwich contents fall out. These sandwiches are nothing at all like I've come to expect. I'm pretty sure that the two people I went with will not go back there, which is a shame because in the past I couldn't say enough good about the subs there. read more

Delicious food and friendly service. We strolled through The Strip looking for a place to eat when we happened upon this place with friends from out of town. I LOVE this place, and who can't love place with such a colorful and recognizable character, Jimmy! (I whispered to my lunchmates as Jimmy sat down to eat near us, "It's Jimmy! I really like this place! It's super fun to be walking down Penn in the Strip District and to see people gawking at the pop-up bakery. These Pepperoni rolls are the bomb and they lure EVERYBODY in with the samples. Right behind the pop up shop is the actual store front where you can walk in and find a greater selection of fresh sandwiches and such. Be aware that the kitchen closes at 3 though. There is also a quaint attached dining area where you can sit on picnic tables and eat their wonderful food. What I like best about the pepperoni roll is that it's really easy to share among a large group and everything is made fresh daily. I've also tried some of their multigrain breads and been happy with those as well. Pro tip: Bring cash or be sure to have a $5+ order as they don't do credit cards for less than that. read more

We were randomly walking by this place and had to stop. There was a huge line for different goodies but something called the pepperoni roll is what caught our nose and eyes. The smell of the fresh bread and whatever was baked inside of them was unlike anything else. We did ourself a favor and ordered the 2 of the pepperoni rolls (1 is big enough for at least 3 people to snack on). We devoured one of them in minutes which was overflowing with cheese and pepperoni. A man outside was offering samples of their pepperoni roll as he stood next to a large bakers rack full of fresh breads. A couple approached and he assembled two rolls for them on the spot. I overheard the girl saying that these were her favorite rolls of all time. My husband and I walked inside to check out the menu. They have anything from hoagies to lasagna. I got the eggplant and meatball sub with peppers and onions. My husband got the loaded Italian hoagie. While we waited for our food to be cooked we browsed the back part of the store. I have a major sweet tooth, so of course I was attracted to the display of fresh pastries they had. Towards the very back they have a selection of cheeses, herbs, spices, and oils. I didn't check out this area too much because I was too distracted by the sights and smells of the front of the store. The best part of all is that Jimmy himself sat in the store and talked to everyone in line. He sat in his red chair chewing on a cigar. You could tell this was a place where he had regulars and he knew almost everyone. We got our food after waiting about 7 minutes. One of the workers even offered us a sample while we waited. My husband thought he got someone else's order. Two huge sandwiches came in his bag. He took it back to make sure and they said the order was correct. If you come on the weekends, they normally have a hot pizza roll stations outside their shop on the sidewalk. The warm, chewy, doughy rolls are cut into four slices. The pepperoni inside it is not overwhelmingly salty but just the right amount of saltiness. The marinara sauce is what truly elevates this pizza roll above others. It's a sauce that tastes like it takes days to make given the depth of flavors. This pizza roll is absolutely comforting, especially on a cold, rainy day. read more

Walking by Sunseri's in the Strip District is nearly impossible to do without stopping by to get one of their pepperoni rolls. When I say they are legendary, I really mean it! They have regular ones filled with pepperoni and cheese, but they also have "atomic" ones if you like things on the spicier side. I'm not sure who is a bigger fan of Sunseri's between my mom and I, but she doesn't live in the city and frequently sends me on trips to get her pepperoni rolls. I've braved some pretty harsh weather conditions to get them for her, and if they weren't as good as they are I might think twice about making the journey. They are 2/$10 for the regular or $6 each, and 2/$15 for the atomic or $8 each. Carrying more than 2 pepperoni rolls is comparable to carrying a small child with as big as they are, so you seriously get a bang for your buck here. During my last visit I was a bit under the weather and decided to try some of their famous wedding soup. You can get frozen quarts of the soup for around $5, and combined with a pepperoni roll you have a tasty and filling meal for less than $15! Usually I'm wary about trying new wedding soups out of fear of being disappointed, but Sunseri's had chopped chicken and little meatballs with one of the best broths I've tasted (aside from homemade, that is). You can't go wrong with whatever you choose here, and I'd love to try other items including their sausage and other Italian classics. Stop by Sunseri's next time you're in the strip, and you may even meet Mr. Sunseri himself as he frequently spends time around the shop, cigar-in-mouth and all! read more

This is a go to place if you want a good sub. I went here for lunch and I was pleased with how everything tasted. There is even a dining room across from the main room where you place your order. This is not fancy by all means however, I got more then I expected. My friend who I dined with said that the eggplant meatball sub tasted just as good as he remembered at least five years ago. read more
