Just had what was, sadly, probably my last visit to Muddy Waters. Have been several times over the years (both for dinner and brunch) and used to enjoy the place. It's been a while since I had been back and the place has taken a definite turn for the worse. First off, I don't know if it was the heat or smoke or what but the servers (both the one we had and the other one working) seemed surly at best. We were seated under a speaker with music playing too loudly to hear my dining companions. When the server who wasn't ours came over to wipe the table next to us (and showered me with the table cleaning spray) I asked for it to be turned down a bit and was looked at like this was an unreasonable request. Then the Sazerac I had, which you'd think was a safe choice for a place that is a Cajun restaurant, was the worst I've ever had. Watered down and overly sweet is the only way to describe it. The cocktail had to be shaken for it to be so watery and that's a massive failing in bartending. Then, thinking I'd just drink whisky, I asked the server for a whisky list and was told they didn't have one. So I figured I'd just go look at the bar to see what they had and, surprise, a whisky list did exist that I took back to the table. Why the server couldn't have asked the bartender for it, I have no idea. For starters, we had oysters, fried green tomatoes, and the crab dip. The fried green tomatoes are good and have remained a standard. The oysters were also fine but sad to see they no longer have the excellent house made hot sauce they once had (and sold by the bottle). The crab dip was cold under the melted cheese and the bread with it looked barely toasted but somehow tasted burnt. For entree, I had the blackened catfish etoufee, which was so salty as to be inedible. I took one bite and sent it back. Given the mood in there, I declined to swap out for a different entree. Regardless, even with that taken off the bill, this was an incredibly expensive visit for such a disappointingly mediocre meal and experience. Wasn't the best experience. It may have been an off day for the staff, but it was rough. My wife was very dissatisfied to the point to where she wanted to leave in the middle of the meal. To begin, we had a reservation at 7:00 PM on Saturday evening. Due to parking we got there a little later than expected. Around ~7:05 PM. We were welcomed by a very friendly greeter. He was by far the highlight of the night given his hospitality and service. I cannot remember the young man's name, but he was awesome. We were initially seated at a high table, but my wife wanted a regular seat to which they happily obliged. Looking back, I wish we didn't move because the seats we were changed to it were extremely tight. To the point to where I was constantly having to move my chair towards the table whenever a server or patron wanted to walk by. Minor issue, but just know it does get tight in there. Now to the actual service, 1 word can describe it. ROUGH. The server seemed as if he was under the influence or something. He came to our table and asked us if we wanted drinks, to which my wife asked a question regarding "mocktails" we were met with "they're right there on the menu, and we have Pepsi products" and he walked off without taking our drinks. Again maybe it was just an off day, but it was not a pleasant introduction to the service given we were traveling from the DMV and this was our first time visiting this establishment. Throughout the night, this same server got into it with some other guests at the table to which he asked them "do we have an issue". Extremely unprofessional and just seemed odd. In regard to the food quality. I'd say it was decent. We ordered 12 chargrilled oysters alongside Jambalaya. The oysters were cooked great and tasted delicious. The jambalaya on the other hand, wasn't very appetizing. The food came out PIPING hot, to the point to where I had to let it sit for around 5-7 minutes before actually beginning to eat the meal. To some this may be a hazard but I didn't mind. The vegetables in the jambalaya wasn't cooked at all. It didn't taste sautéed if you will. We stopped after the Poe speakeasy just to grab some bites and I'm a huge fan of oysters they had west coast and east coast styles. My fav oysters always come from PEI which they had two or three options of. Our service was spot on. I don't like raw oysters and haven't had cooked before, but I thought the chargrilled oysters were good, although I don't think I'm the biggest fan of oysters either way. The shrimp and grits were pretty good, although the grape tomatoes being cold was a little weird for me. The grits were also kind of room temperature and would have been better a bit warmer. Muddy Waters had ups and downs. The oysters were very good, so the meal started out well. Next, we had the crab dip and Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was okay, but lacked flavor. The crab dip was cold, we asked for it to be heated up, it was but still only luke warm at best. The main reason we went was because of the lobster roll. The lobster was okay, we wished it was seasoned more. The problem with it was the bun. It was only slightly toasted, so the lobster soaked through the bun, which was gross. J it's really sad when you see a restaurant with so much promise reaches the Zenith and then taper off. I'd say muddy waters probably has another two or three years before it runs out of steam. Here's a good: they still have a great selection of oysters. They're priced affordably as anywhere else in the city and they also have some really good entrées. They also have a happy hour that I'll probably go to for oysters. Let's start with the bad: number one I don't wanna go to the bathroom and have dripping water from the ceiling hitting me in the head when I'm trying to use the facilities. How would I know? Bc I vacation every year in Charleston, SC and there's no better place to eat cornbread than the deep South. Today, their cornbread tastes just like it was poured out from a cardboard box w/ directions on back stating, "add water, stir & bake"...it was tasteless & SO DRY. Yuck! The whipped butter was unflavored & also tasteless! STRIKE TWO: Their Southern Sweet tea recipe has also been changed to a cheap Northern knockoff. Nothing about it was good. They USED to have an amazing Southern Sweet Tea. STRIKE THREE: Muddy Waters Oyster Bar has a Southern New Orleans, back-water Bayou theme. They even have alligators sticking their heads through port-holes on the wall. We used to LOVE listening to REAL American Southern Blues music while eating. It made the ambiance SO SPECIAL. It's been one week since Mardi Gras, and one week since returning from New Orleans. As such, I couldn't stop myself from craving some seafood & Louisiana cookin. After searching online, we found Muddy Waters. We showed up at around 5:10 ish and the place was empty. However, we were told that the only seat available was a two seater near the door which we would have to give up in 50 min or to sit at a bar. That worked for us! The wait staff came promptly, took our order. Chargrilled oysters x 6, Oyster Rockefellar with no bacon or breadcrumbs x 6, Oyster Po Boy, French Onion soup with extra cheese & no bread & 6 charbroiled oysters. When I asked if we could do the Rockefeller without bacon and breadcrumbs. She said maybe. The waitress didn't write any of this down. I was very clear that I wanted no bacon, no breading, that was it and if Rockefeller was too complicated to just go for 12 chargrilled oysters. Multiple staff came to our table on separate occasions confused about our order. We clarified again and after back and forth, we said we will just go for 12 chargrilled oysters at this point. Because of the miscommunication and misunderstanding amongst the staff, the food took a while to come out. It was during a time that the restaurant wasn't busy--5:40ish at this point. The po boy came out, it was great and satisfied the craving. The French onion soup didn't have cheese - even though I asked for extra cheese. At this point, I was frustrated because I clarified multiple times with the wait staff. The oysters came out and it was only 6 and we were confused why only 6 oysters. Then when we were almost done with our meal, the other 6 came. I hope the team can improve on the customer service and internal communication. I highly recommend that the staff uses a note pad to take the order instead of trying to memorize it and mix things up. We ordered the large seafood tower (the smallest one) which we felt was an amazing price for a great variety of seafood. Manager Steve is loud rude and obnoxious. I tried to get his attention as he was walking past me. He stopped slightly behind me and I touch him on his back with my finger to get his attention. He quickly shouted " don't touch me, I don't like being touched". I apologized and asked him, if he could get my waiter David. He continued to express his disdain for being touched. Steve then tried puffing up to another female whom I was sitting with. Who said a manager doesn't act like this. Steve, came back with the butter. Would you use it? Customers should not be treated in that manner. He should not be a manager of any business. I waited for David to bring me butter. Usually, when your food is brought to your table you are asked if there is anything that you need, or that they can get you. Not here, not this time. Food put in front of you and off they go.
