When I embarked on a project to redo my home office I decided to forgo a general designer and attempted to cobble together all the the different contractors and specialists myself. After contacting a number of cabinetmakers to build custom-made bookcases for my apartment in Manhattan, I found Doron Vashdi, the principal of New York Woodworks. Doron has 30 years of experience with an extensive portfolio and impeccable process. As I described what I wanted, which included some very distinctive millwork, he was sketching a schematic, putting my words into the reality of what the finished product would look like. I was further impressed that while he completely understood the design, he was completely honest in advising that the placement I wanted was not ideal, and suggested an alternate with a few modifications--a real indication of character, in that he could have just delivered what I wanted instead of professionally advising me. I'm quite strong-willed; however, he had the courage of his convictions and he was right! In a word, he absolutely nailed it (no pun intended), and in less than a month he and his team installed the wraparound bookcases in four hours' time, and they are elegant and perfect. His pricing is what would be expected for A-List interior design, but fair for the quality produced. I'm already planning for additional cabinetry in the primary bedroom and a unique divider for a family property I'm refurbishing in the Green Mountains of Vermont. Doron is the best. After seeing the huge bombardment of ads on craigslist, Village Voice Backpage, and any other free/cheap ad service, I decided to give this independent company a shot. My husband and I made an appointment for Friday at 6pm with the manager. At 5:15pm, we called to re-confirm, but only got an answering machine. We figured maybe they just stepped out, and left a message that we were on our way and a number to reach us if anything came up. We headed out to what turned out to be some sketchy locked up garage under a bridge. No answer, no one there to honor our appointment. The person that we made the appointment with had several ways to reach us. Even after we left several messages, no one bothered with a callback, an apology, or anything to acknowledge that would indicate that they were a legitimate business of any kind. We were planning to spend a good amount of money (at least 5 figures) for the right product, but all we did with these unprofessional and incompetent assholes was waste our time going out to some ugly hood. If this is how they treat potential customers, imagine how well they'll complete your job! When they take your money and run, what recourse do you have? BEWARE! read more

We hired them to do custom cabinetry in our Brooklyn brownstone. They worked very closely with our architect, contractor, and us to ensure that all parties had what they needed. Though there were several revisions and countless delays (on our side), NY Woodwork were always patient and extremely accommodating. While our contractor was constantly delaying the job, Doron had everything built and ready to install on time, or even earlier than what he had quoted us. Doron would personally stop by regularly to ensure that the cabinets were to our liking and actually push us to give him any critiques/revisions as his number one priority was that we were happy.
