Person who did my massage was greedy for a tip. When asked about how much I'd give him I told him and he said oh it has to be 20 percent tip. Never in my life have I experienced an employee telling me how much of a tip to give them. I would understand if they said it nicely but they said it with attitude. I will never be coming here again. I am sorry for me and them. This was the worst massage experience I have ever had. It started off nicely and felt pretty good but then a very loud and startling screeching beep started happening very frequently and I realised it was the door bell. People would come in and it sounded like they were next to the massage bed. One time the door bell rang and my masseuse left for 5 full minutes to talk to someone. The next time the people came walking into the room where I was getting my massage. After that there was no relaxing. The place is so loud. My masseuse also talked to her workmates loudly through the door while giving me my massage. I have never wished a massage to be over but I just couldn't wait with this one. read more

One word: "Wow!" The massage was the best I've ever had- being an athlete, I've had a number of massages over the years, from single massage therapists to "Exhale" in Boston. But I've never experienced a deep tissue massage like Newbury Spa- absolutely phenomenal. Honestly the worst massage I have ever gotten, and I have never really had a bad massage experience until now. They played no music so you could hear all of the other employees talking and cars beeping outside. Instead of laying on sheets that were washed after each customer we laid on top of paper examination sheets they use at the doctors office which was very uncomfortable. The first half of the massage was a massage over the blanket which consisted of essentially just being rubbed- not enjoyable. For the rest of the massage she used her elbows and forearms to massage my back which was extremely rough and not relaxing or enjoyable. I honestly was just waiting for the massage to be over the whole time. Then as I went to leave the woman demanded a tip not even giving me a chance to tip her on my own- SO rude. It was almost like she's been ripped off of tips before because the service is so terrible so I'm really not sure how they have so many 5 star reviews.... read more

I got the worst massage of my life here. I'm not sure how well trained my masseuse was because he was pretty terrible. I was in pain, not from the pressure, but from the motions. I felt like he was scratching me with his finger nails with deep pressure. I woke up today with bruises on body and there was a cut in one area where he broke the skin. Just left this spa. I left thinking how rude. The man that works there was very abrubt, and rude. When I handed him the cash to pay for my services as well as my two friends I should have received change. The man held my money and continued to ask me for tip... after I received my change finally I told handed the man the tip and he started telling me no 20% and the other workers were giggling. So damn rude, tip is earned and rude ass behavior will leave you with nothing. Very disappointed with these folks. Don't come here if you like good service. read more

This place is wonderful. I randomly stopped in at lunch today and am about 7 months pregnant. I needed to destress and I found this place is super close to my new office so I figured I would try it out. Totally my fault for calling ahead but not saying I was pregnant so they seemed a little nervous but they did an excellent job. The back massage portion of my 1 hour was a little rushed which is my only real complaint about the massage itself. The rest was so good though. I remember thinking during my head massage portion that I would come just for this and then when she started to apply pressure to points in my shoulders I revised that too nope I need this also. This continued on throughout the body work. The cubicles are cloth curtained, private, but no ceilings so it can get noisy. I went in stretch pants and a stretchy tank and stayed that way throughout. I was super comfy and the massage therapist was so sweet. She even helped me up after as I was probably about to snooze off. Worth the $59 cash and I will be back. read more

Came here with my husband for a first time couples message it was so personal yet so intimate there was enough space between the both of us, to say it was amazing is an understatement before we started they asked us our preference and we told them two woman and they were very patient and gentle yet firm enough to relieve all the built up stress from trying to keep up with my twin 13 year olds and 2 year old son lol it was relaxing there was a calm rhythm playing on a radio in the background and they continuously asked me if I was ok if it was too intense and so on when the massage was done I didn't want to even leave lol yes it was that good oh and I forgot to mention I was unclear on how much clothes to remove so we started a little late but they didn't rush through the hour at all. Thy offered us a refreshment before and after and were very professional the whole way through I told my husband that his massages are good but she released 13 years of stress lol this is a hidden gem on beautiful Newbury st where we were able to take a little stroll after as it was a little nice outside I will definitely be going back and if I were financially set I would go at least once a week read more

My neck was sore and stiff but after the session I feel like my body is mostly rejuvenated because of the right pressure and professional massage technique. Will definitely come back again! Within the first five minutes of entering the massage room I felt uncomfortable as the two masseuses started chatting over the sound of the music. I decided to ignore this as I want to enjoy my experience but I realize I could ignore no longer when I heard the sound of a woman morning extremely loudly through the walls. I thought she was really loud but the walls are really thin and I could hear their entire conversation. I wasn't able to relax. I tried to enjoyed my experience but this was just not possible. To top it all off after the massage ended, I asked for a 10% discount as it stated in the website for new customers but to my surprise, the lady said that we could only receive the discount if we wrote a review on Yelp, even though this part was not at all mentioned on the website. So I thought, what the hell why not, but once I posted my review, she was still reluctant to give me the discount because I gave them four stars, which on my part, was pretty generous. She basically demanded I give her a five star, but I was not willing to write something I didn't believe in. I am extremely disappointed and I will not be coming back here. read more

Very unprofessional and would not recommend this location. The masseuse walked in while I was still changing, despite asking her to wait. This meant the door was open to the entire reception area. She then proceeded to take a hair tie off my wrist and pull my hair into a painful ponytail to start the massage without saying anything. Also during the massage, the masseuse began removing my underwear (?!) without checking to see if that was acceptable. Even without these issues, the massage itself was unfortunate. I didn't know that slapping was a massage technique, but it wasn't one that I felt improved the experience. It was also the first time I have had a masseuse wipe off the massage oil with a scratchy towel at the end of the massage. By the end, I only wanted to leave a small tip (10%). But they actually tried to delete the tip and type in double the tip I originally wanted to pay. I'm honestly baffled by the whole experience. I would warn anyone away from this place. read more

Chose this place as a birthday gift to myself and they almost completely ruined the gift. Massages OK, the parlor isn't much for appearances and would've been a solid 4 star if the following did not occur: the staff who massaged us for our couples massage didn't quote us a price higher than what was posted outside their parlor over the phone; the man massaging my friend was rough around the edges, he frequently left the room leaving the door open during our massage so that other sounds, and even the phone ringing drowned out our light music that was supposed to be setting the tone. At the end they lift your legs up and drop them and loudly say that the massage is over... other places I've been gently deliver this message. At CHECKOUT is where all of this went bad. THIS is where I asked for clarification on price and it seemed like they wanted to have a sidebar conversation on what the price should be- I paid (and paid in cash because they ask you to use their little atm conveniently in the lobby as opposed to credit). Then *THREE STAFF MEMBERS* CROWDED AROUND US to ask HOW WE WERE GOING TO TIP. They said it like it was mandatory- when I confronted the large and unnecessary amount of pressure they were putting on us, as I was already spending $120+ they awkwardly laughed it off. I then tipped $10 AND THEY ACTUALLY TOOK THE TEN DOLLARS AND MADE THE PHYSICAL HAND MOTION BETWEEN ALL OF THEM AS IF TO SAY $10 WAS NOT ENOUGH FOR THEM TO SPLIT. At this point I'm over $130 out of pocket and vocally upset. I came to this business and paid for services without issue- I did not have to choose your establishment. Then I was furthered pressured to spend more of my hard earned money for less than mediocre service. I wanted to try this parlor for the duo-massage option but I will certainly NEVER return even if this means opting for solo massages at another business in Chinatown that is peaceful and serene. They're really something else. What was the point in the "relaxation" massage if you're gonna run my blood pressure back up at the end. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND PEACE OF MIND. DONT GO TO GET ANYTHING "RELAXATION" AT PLACES THAT HAVE AN ATM AS A CENTERPIECE IN THEIR WAITING AREA. read more

This was by far the worst massage of my life. My friend and I went in for a couples massage. We both came away feeling like we'd been physically abused for an hour. In addition to too-hard massaging, there was elbowing, punching, slapping - all while the two masseuses spoke non-stop to each other. They did not speak English, so any attempts to communicate with them were futile. I could tell that my masseuse wasn't even looking at what she was doing half the time -- she was turned away so she could talk to the other masseuse all while continuing on auto-pilot to massage/hurt me. There was no music - just the sound of the two ladies talking nonstop to each other. My poor friend started experiencing back spasms because of her massage, and they continued for the rest of the night - she was afraid she wouldn't be able to to walk today. And we're both extremely sore today. I cannot state strongly enough how much I advise against going to this place. This is the last time I book a massage at an unknown place through Groupon. read more
