one of my all time favorite breweries. Solid lagers, IPAS, and off the wall sours! Was introduced to newgrass purely through beer but their food is excellent also. Cuban sandwich is a go to for me and theirs is the best i have ever had. The local pork loin is delicious. Chicken Caesar wrap is also really good. Light but filling. First off, 10 years in the beer biz deserves a toast--cheers, Newgrass Brewing Co.! This downtown Shelby staple has beer, bites, and bold vibes to match. My boyfriend and I stopped in for a flight (because decisions are hard), and let me just say: A+ for beer names alone. I went with the Negative Flux Given sour and Tiny Bud Home Pilsner, and I'm still giggling about it. Bonus: both were legit delicious. He dove into the IPA lineup and gave it a thumbs-up across the board. The space is deceptively big--with a chill side patio, upstairs seating, and a roomy indoor area. The only thing that felt tiny was the bar seating (aka my natural habitat), but since it wasn't too crowded, we managed to snag two seats and felt like honorary employees eavesdropping on what seemed to be a staff meeting. Honestly, we loved the inside peek at brewery life. We grabbed the app sampler for a snack attack--you get three half-orders of any apps. The pretzels with "cheese" (pimento fire magic) were the MVP. The fried pickles were solid but didn't quite steal the spotlight. And the cheese curds? Light, flaky, and fried in a batter that gave off fish fry energy--in a surprisingly good way. I really enjoy the updated menu they rolled out not too long ago. The service is still always fantastic and there's a reason this place is still popular among locals. Don't let this place fool you. You can't see much from the outside by this is a local brewery with an entire setup inside. They offer a good variety of beers and they have live music. The good came out fast and I will say the fries were cooked very well. Crunchy and seasoned. The burger, despite that it had mayonnaise on it was very good. Cooked medium the way I indicated. Nice atmosphere. Decent beer selection... one for all types. Light, lager, ales, ipas. The fiddler is a good light hazy. They've cans to go so plan on taking some back home. They have a great ESB and Sangria. The chicken tenders (sweet chili sauce) were out of this world good!! There is ample seating, dining room, upstairs and outside. There are always new beers to try here and the sours are always unique! My go to is whatever sour they have or the Yallstars Lager and I have not been disappointed yet in the beer. The PB&J sour was great and their Orb Weilder were two notables! I enjoy their cheese curds and their chicken sammy. It's my go to. When they were crowded I was disappointed in my sandwich because the patty was the size of a chicken tender. Normally it's huge. I haven't had that problem since though. Their macaroni was AMAZING. Great food and service here. Had the Kolsch beer (perfect) and a bunch of apps that were spot on. The crispy Brussels sprouts were delicious and the pretzel with some to was really great. Free parking was available on the street behind the brewery. They opened up at 11AM Saturday with two to three people already there. The brewery was smaller than I expected it to be from the pictures. It didn't matter as the fruited sours were amazing. We got a basket of fries and waters to with the beers. Newgrass Brewing is one of my favorite breweries as the beer is accessible to many of us further south. This was definitely worth visiting. read more

Service here is great! You order at the counter and they bring it out to you. There are tables outside that are great for nice weather. I have always been a fan of the Newgrass sour but they surprisingly have some good IPA's that made picking a beer difficult. Definitely don't miss out on their fruity sour but it's definitely out of the box of what most people think is beer. We ate here and the curd burger was really good and so were the hot chicken tendies.... Be advised HOT have your beer at the ready! We also ordered the sliders and they were the only thing I wouldn't want to order again. Also the fries are great! Love this brewery! read more

This really is a great vibe kind of place, in great location in Shelby, NC which is up and coming. The location is right down the street from the Earl Scruggs Center (For you Youngsters Google it, well worth it lol), there are a lot of little shops like you would find in these up and coming small towns that are being revitalized, along with Farmers Markets, Bridges BBQ etc. In the opinion of my family (As I am not a Beer Drinker) this place has some very good beers to come and try out after you have visited some of the great things around the area and you just want to kick back and relax. They also have drinks for us non-beer drinkers. So come to Shelby and slow down and enjoy the day, weekend or vacation. read more

They get points for beer and trivia. Especially enjoyed trivia! Pace is good and the moderator is perfect! He really is the reason for the 3 stars! The problems: They only have one line to order anything, thus don't be in any hurry. Also, don't want another beer anytime soon. Maybe have another checkout or a beer express lane. They would make more money. Brought my 83 year old "cool mom" for her knowledge of trivia, hoping for good food and fun. Our biggest complaint is the expensive grilled cheese was burnt, inedible and made mom sad! I will also say the fries were cold! Only one poor waitress that doesn't get tips! Five stars for tap list and can availability; one star for swag availability. I was honestly a little worried to visit their location since their town/county haven't been super COVID safe, but Newgrass has signs on their door that masks are required. THANK YOU, Newgrass, for keeping your staff and your visitors safe! This spot was much smaller than I had expected - usually a place with the reputation of Newgrass has outgrown a venue like this, but they seem very at home here. It was welcoming and had plenty of seating inside and out. The food menu looked good but we weren't hungry. Maybe next time. I wish they did flights but luckily we were able to get half pours and we sampled a few other sips. After perusing the fridge, the three of us walked out with 20 cans. Woops. I also wish they had more "stuff" -- no stickers, very limited shirt selection (he said they only had a few available in medium, no other sizes available). Hopefully they'll remedy that and I can order something online. In the meantime, I'm stoked that they're finally distributing in Charleston, SC, so I don't have to drive to Shelby every time I want to try something new! Keep up the great work, friends! read more

The Aku Aku tiki beer was absolutely delicious! We also tried the have a day blueberry sour, which I wished was sweeter but if you like really sour sours you would probably like it. The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the drink selection and made recommendations/gave samples to taste. They have a lot of great lunch options including salads, sandwiches, wraps, soup, etc. I had the Turkey wrap which was tasty, although I wish there had been more cream cheese spread in it! Also on the menu it said it had carrots in it, but I didn't see any in mine. The house chips were delicious, served with ranch, and on the softer side. Newgrass is my favorite brewery and any time I can swing by for a beer fresh on tap I'm going to take that opportunity! Tried a few new sours (those are my fave!) and grabbed lunch after a hike at Crowders. The fried cheese curds with taziki are my go to. They're lightly breaded and the taziki is so different with them but adds a lot of flavor. I got the PLT this time and it was messy but delicious. What a awesome place! Came here on a suggestion and thankful we had the time to check it out. Had a flight and was amazed by the flavor of the beers. I have recently not found a lot I enjoy and these could be my new favorite. My favorites were the balloon head and the zero flux given. It's a bit of a drive for us to the brewery so thankfully they have some local drop offs where they have their beers. While we were there we got a small snack of their fries and beer cheese dip! It hit the spot. Also the fresh baked goods in the front case were getting a fresh shipment by a local lady who makes them and couldn't help but snag pecan bar which was delicious! If you've never been here before you will not know what to do if you want to order food. So much for guidance to new customers. There is no one to seat you and there is no sign to give directions. You can sit anywhere but most people come to eat or drink. Once you enter, walk through the main room to the counter across the room. There you will find a menu and you can order food. They have their beers on a monitor over the bar. You get a number to set on your table and they deliver your order. K & I stopped in here on a Friday night before seeing Edwin McCain at the Don Gibson Theater. We ordered the fish tacos which were OK. I liked that you have the choice of corn or flour tortillas. Tonight they had the rainbow trout which was quite tasty, could have been just a bit larger but an order is 3 tacos. It took about 20 minutes to get our food. We were a little nervous we would make it to the theater in time for the start of the show. We didn't order any beers since we drove from Charlotte and were in town to see a concert. Located at the heart of downtown Shelby, Newgrass Brewing is making its mark (in a good way). Was able to check out Newgrass over the weekend and was super impressed. Really cool space, modern and warm and it seems like they have a really well thought out space and business plan. It was a holiday weekend so it wasn't that busy when I went. But they definitely have the tables and levels (2 levels!) to accommodate large crowds. There's a large stage for live music and events and, wait for it... a full kitchen! Charlotte breweries are definitely lacking in full kitchens and have gone the food truck route. Food is supposed to be rather good here, but I didn't try anything. I just had their Fiddler's Dream IPA. Decent beer, and it looks like they have a ton of seasonal and other offerings. They do offer other local beers here too. Nice to see all the breweries working together for a beertopia out there. Servers were nice and made sure we were happy. They even came by and asked if we needed another (since we didn't start a tab- one and one for me because I had been drinking all afternoon). My wife and I visited Newgrass Brewing for the first time this past weekend and we were very disappointed. We ordered food and got our first beer. We decided to sit upstairs and it was very warm up there. Our beers were also not cold enough and our food took over 30 minutes to come out. My burger was cooked well but my wife's was way overdone. We have had many of Newgrass beers in cans and on draft in the Charlotte area and have never been disappointed. My wife and I were very let down and will probably not be back. There are way too many better breweries in our area, Newgrass you guys can do much better read more

Great beer, great food and great service. What an amazing asset to have for the nice town of Shelby. I came on taco Tuesday, so I can't comment on much else on the menu. At $2 a piece I grabbed all 3 flavors available. All great! Paired perfectly with my "It Was A Good Day" IPA. I think I was told that was a limited release though, so don't expect it. A great Imperial/Double IPA. The fiddlers dream is a pretty great IPA as well. I talked to one of the brewers and he had all kinds of great creative ideas in the future. Then I find out they throw concerts here!!! I'd love to see some bluegrass here. They've had Larry Keel play. Acoustic Syndicate too. I don't know of another brewery in the Charlotte area that has pulled that quality of music. Will definitely be keeping my eye on future events and will try and stop back by soon if coming near the area. read more

I do believe it's time to update my Newgrass review. Now that I have worked my way through their beer list a few times, I can honestly say that Lewis and Dustin truly make some excellent beer. One of my recent favorites was their Peach Kolsch - it was simply amazing! I do not like fruit beers but I couldn't get enough of this stuff. I'm also crushing on their Carolina Uncommon Rye Saison. These guys really try to keep things interesting for us beer nerds. The beers alone net 5 stars from me. A few weeks ago, the restaurant opened. Yes, there have been some growing pains and "rookie" mistakes (eg.sandy romaine), but there has never been any hesitation to make things right and keep the customer happy. Overall the food is very good. I love their spicy fried pickles with Tahini Sauce that can also contain little extra treats like banana peppers and jalapenos. The Spoiled Brat is great! It's from locally raised hogs that are fed the beer mash from the brewery! My favorite is the Fantastic Falafel! Holy crap! Great Falafel in Shelby? It's true! Four Stars on the food. We stopped by here on our way through. So glad we did!! Beer is on point and great. My wife likes lighter beers and the witbier was the trick. Full of flavors but smooth and clean. I had the Fiddler's Dream and loved it. Nice flavored IPA. Food was very good as well. The fries are crispy, the pretzel was cooked perfectly (soft not hard) with a great cheese dip. The deviled eggs are as stated just like Grandma made. They are savory (not sweet which I do not like) and on point. Staff is very nice and friendly.
