I hate giving bad reviews. But sometimes there is just not an option. Wife and I stopped in on the way through town. Wife had a horchata and it was very good. I had a coffee and it was ok a little weak but good flavor. We purchased two small pies. One pecan and one lemon meringue. The Pecan pie filling was runny. I have never in my life seen this before. The pie crust was more like pie dough. By far the worst pecan pie I have ever had. We have not tried the lemon meringue yet. The staff was ok. Two ladies there only one working. They were totally overwhelmed by our group size so I'm looking for something good to say. I ordered the turkey sandwich and it was ok. But when I talked to others they were disappointed by the burger. Patty too small. Cookies that were included with the combo were not edible and many just left them on their plate so there was evidence for the staff if they cared. The place needs a definite upgrade from the process for order taking to the restrooms. Total overhaul needed. A solid local bakery Coming through town, happened upon a small bakery. Decided to stop and get some cookies and a kolache as well. The bakery had a decent line, but the staff was quick to grab items and orders. We got a selection of cookies, then made our way out of town. The Mexican wedding cookies were a highlight. Good amount of almond and sugar to make a good cookie. The bread was soft and chewy. And the kolache was cheesy and meaty. The donut holes were a little tough, more reminiscent of a cold pretzel bite. Not bad, just different. This place is a good local bakery, one of the few places in town to get a good bite for cheap, but with a solid quality and reputation. It's not good enough to be trek worthy, but it's good enough to be the staple bakery of the town and worth a stop if you happen to be in this area. read more

Enjoyed a baked treat and coffee prior to a castle tour with friends... yummy treats here and my fave was the cinnamon roll. I would definitely get that again! There are 2 lines: one for hot food, and another for castle tour tickets and baked goods. The castle tour was self guided after hearing a presentation (which was hard to hear; I'd suggest a microphone to reach those at back of tour group) we took our time to explore the rooms and towers as it was fairly crowded. That is a visit to his castle/ home with tour and lunch if lucky enough to get in on the limited spots available online or at the bakery. Menus are on the wall and on top of the glass counter of all of the variety of baked selections. Food is available as well. I wanted to check out this Bakery because it's iconic. When we walked inside everything was clean and tidy and the counter was fully stocked with baked goods, maybe a bit overstocked? Came here for the first time with the kids. Nothing special about this bakery, but that doesn't mean it's bad or anything. They sell a bunch of donuts, pastries, and cookies. The line can get long and it can be an inconvenience for those being helped next because they don't have a large menu sign of what they're selling. For example, because I've never been here before, my kids and I wanted to ordered some breakfast, but the only visible menu were on their counter far from me so when the staff came up to me to get my order, I had no clue so she left. The menu only had breakfast items and not any of the bakery stuff so by the time I saw what they had, I felt the pressure on hurrying up and select random things. It just wasn't organized well. I think they need a large sign that goes to the front doors where the line can reach so by the time the back gets to the front, they'll know. On top of that, the information about the Newmans Castle wasn't visible until you got to the front, but even that, you still have to inquire about the admissions otherwise, the staff won't say anything. We ordered 3 admissions ticket for $20 which includes a free ham or turkey sandwich in a paper bag with a bag of Ruffles chips that you receive when you arrive to the Newmans Castle. They have to do a better job of making that information visible in the shop. If we had known, we would've bought just bakery goods instead of breakfast. Anyways, we ordered the Roast Beef Sandwich, BLT Sandwich, and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich. Each came with Ruffles chips and a drink. We also ordered the soup of the day (Beef Potato Barley), but when it didn't arrive to our table, I had to ask one of the staff members who then informed me that I had to get it myself. It was located by the front doors and it was all you can eat soup. We retrieved our free sacks at the castle. Overall, sandwiches were delicious, but nothing spectacular about them. For the baked goods, we also ordered an Apple Fritter, Cinnamon cake donut, chocolate cake donut, jelly donut, and blueberry yeast donut. Nothing special about these donuts that you can't get from HEB or Krogers. Overall, decent priced for mediocre food. We drove a little over an hour to check this place out and it wasn't worth it. Now that I've crossed this off my bucket list for things to do in Texas, we probably won't be coming back unless we're in the area again. The female staff that helped me was super friendly and fast. She did her best to help me because she didn't speak English well so she used her phone to translate to me. Parking lot is a One-Way and it's small so once you pass it, you have to go around. They have lots of tables to dine on and restrooms that aren't the cleanest. read more

My dad and son are obsessed with the Apple turnover. My parents just stopped off here for the first time last week and came to my house raving about it. And I realize I've been there several times but I've never reviewed it. We usually go when we have to be up at the Austin County Fairgrounds for stuff in the morning. I got two decent kolaches and then made the mistake of ordering an iced coffee. The staff was polite but my coffee was filled to the BRIM with ice. The coffee was done in about 4 sips and it cost more than the two kolaches we paid for. If I'm paying $6 for a coffee, there's no reason it should be 95% ice. read more

This place has been there forever serving up home made baked goods and breakfast foods. So much so there is a wall rack holding the "regulars" coffee mugs. Everything is made from scratch. I don't normally eat the sweets so I can only comment on the breakfast omelet. It's a 3 egg with sliced potato chunks (even though they call hash browns) cooked well. I have tried it on two occasions so far and they are tasty and not overcooked. The only negative I can add is the building could use an update and clean up. Definitely some pros and cons to this bakery. Pros: Yummy tuna sandwiches. Thick homemade bread, lots of fixings, would absolutely order again. Sandwiches were $8.50, or $9.50 w/ a drink and cookie. We went for the combo deal and enjoyed a peanut butter chocolate chip cookie and coke. Cons: The two sandwiches took 30 minutes to make, which wouldn't be a big deal, but the staff didn't appear to be serving anyone else at the time. We actually went up to counter twice to see if the sandwiches were sitting there and we needed to pick them up. This is the cutest country bakery, deli, country store! Exactly how it should be. The staff are super friendly and sweet and everything tastes homemade and simple and fresh. Very healthy portions. I love to support local mom and pop businesses and was eager to try Newman's for breakfast. When we entered no one greeted us, helped us find a table, or tell us where to order. We stood there looking around and realized we had to seat ourselves (no problem), then we waited for a waitress that never came. Apparently they don't have menus or waitresses (just about a dozen people working behind the counter not interacting with the customers). We finally spotted the small sign at a separate counter from the baked goods and realized we had to walk up there and place our order. Ok, not a big deal, but why didn't any worker bother to tell us that's how they do things?! We finally placed our order and went to get ourselves a cup of self-serve coffee. The coffee was COLD. Like I could put my finger in the cup and leave it there-cold. It took them awhile, but they finally put some fresh hot coffee out after I let them know it was cold. They didn't bother to tell me when that fresh pot got set out though. Then our food came. A waitress actually brought it to our table. Doesn't it look delicious in the picture? Well we asked for biscuit as our bread and we asked for a side of gravy. What did they bring? A plate of biscuits covered in gravy. The waitress seemed annoyed when we told her that wasn't what we ordered. She came back with the correct order. But this time the gravy was ice cold, like out of the fridge cold. We couldn't get her attention so we could send it back. When she dropped the ticket off at the table, we told her about the gravy and that we'd like it taken off our ticket since we didn't eat it and couldn't get her attention so she could fix it. She told is she wasn't taking it off the tab because we didn't go track her down to tell her about it sooner!! Needless to say we asked for the manager, who didn't speak or understand English. She did understand enough to know we were upset with not just the cold coffee and gravy, but especially the customer service. She removed the item from our tab and processed the payment. So although the omelets and home potatoes were delicious, we couldn't get past the cold coffee and gravy topped off with horrible customer service. read more

THE place to stop for breakfast if you are in the Bellville area. I was on a bike ride from Katy and NB is the halfway stop. As you head west on 529, you will see the bakery on your right just past the railroad tracks. There are some spots to eat outside, and many more inside. Order hot breakfast items on the counter to the right. To the left, you can order bakery items and coffee. I ordered a coffee and shared a fritter with some folks at my table. I agree with Melissa G. about the fritter being tasty but missing apple chunks. Still very good, though. The coffee was ok, nothing special...weak and almost like truck stop coffee. NB does get busy, but it is still small-town busy. You might have to wait a few minutes to order, but overall is not bad. There are a few restrooms in the back, which is also nice.
