I haven't had an experience with bad service lately but this spot was really terrible. We had never been here before so weren't sure if we were supposed to order at the bar or at our table. After about 15 minutes we decided to order at the bar. He helped multiple people before us, including the couple next to us that said "they have been waiting" ... he decided to help them first anyway. My friend ordered the southwest chicken salad and the bartender asked her if chicken was ok. She said yes ... and was served the salad with ground beef? We also ordered another drink after our meal and he forgot about them for about 10 minutes so we just left. I don't usually speak poorly of places but the man working was just flat out a bad server. read more

We stopped in before a show at the Milwaukee Rep across the street. Extremely cool old bar with great history since the mid 1800's. Location of the Milwaukee Press Club. Great antiques and tons of signatures on the walls from famous actors, politicians. Writers and athletes. The bartender was very friendly and filled us in on some of the history. They have a small dining area with a limited menu, though we didn't have time to try it out. Looking forward to stopping in again. read more

It's worth a stop to take a gander at the history in the Newsroom Pub. This is the longest continuously operating press club in the Americas - 130+ years, and there are several nice 19th century decorative touches throughout. The beer and wine selections were not vast. The Mr. went with a Miller High Life and I had a cabernet. It was quiet at 5:30 on a Thursday night with an oldies music show later that night across the street. There was a couple at the bar in town for a Lake Michigan cruise and a handful of other people. More trickled in closer to showtime. They had the Safe House menu available as far as food, which you could order at the bar and someone would bring it to your table. All over the walls you can see the Milwaukee Press Club's collection of signature plaques, including celebrities, presidents, comedians, and of course journalists. Depending on what's going on with shows across the street, they may be closed by 9 pm, but if you're around earlier and haven't been, stop in for a drink! read more

Newsroom pup feels like it can't find its feet. It's a beautiful space but... it does not match the vibe of what it's decorated as (which would be awesome) and it feels like it used to be a baller spot but since Covid it's just barely hanging in. Let me explain. The inside is lovely and classic. As one of the oldest restaurants in the US and being right next to the theaters, it feels like it should have on instrumental jazz or classics music. Instead it was Lady Gaga and Hoobastank, which I don't hate but it didn't go with the classy speakeasy vibe. It was just weird. The menu also clashed- it felt like a sports bar, not a cute and classy little bar to get drinks and a bite to eat before or after a show, or take a date. The cocktail menu looked damn good, but I didn't partake as I was driving. Womens bathroom was beautiful and clean but the door does not close easily, and there is No place to hang a purse or a coat. It was weird. Food came out quickly but was also a mixed bag. The spinach artichoke appetizer was absolutely lacking something- it tasted slightly flat. Chips need work. No salt. Bread would be better than the chips. Moderately disappointed, I've never had an under seasoned spinach artichoke dip since there's so much Parmesan cheese in it, but it was just... flat. Some salt and lemon juice would make it good. It was so close to being lovely but it wasn't. For my entrée I got the BLt keto salad, and there were pros and cons. Pro: beautiful presentation, the dish it was in was gorgeous (and supported the classy speakeasy vibe), it was tasty and came out fast. Cons: other than the chicken everything was on the bottom of the bowl. The bacon pieces were dust sized and at first I wasn't even sure there was any, but it was all on the bottom of the bowl instead of mixed through, which was odd. Avocado crema under seasoned/ bland. My knife was dirty but the fork was spotless. I wasn't going to cut anything up so o didn't complain but that was a perfect example of what the place is like- one thing is spot on the others are meh or missing or weird. I had good service but I saw three people come in, there was no one but me in the space, and they left. I suspect Covid understaffing but it was weird to have zero bartenders or waitresses or anyone there. I'll try again in a few months to see if it's improved because it's a beautiful space, and if they can live up to the classy/luxury vibes it would be amazing to take friends to after we see a show at the theater, but for right now I'll just go to St Kates for that. It's a beautiful space, and I suspect they got knocked down hard with Covid and are struggling to get back on their feet, but if things don't improve I'll find another spot downtown to fill my need for a classy, sexy spot to wine and dine at before or after hitting the theater. St. Kates is fun and the art displays are awesome but it's a little noisy for my taste, but the food is better and the silverware is clean so it'll stay my go-to for now. I really want to love this place and I see potential but right now it's not there. read more

Wow, wish I had read the reviews before walking over. We walk in, take a seat near the bar, try to make eye contact with the bartender and he just ignores us. I get it, if you have a server, if you don't it's on you... Zero service, with hardly anyone there, not even a friendly acknowledgment of us walking in...a little tip, say hello when people walk in, make them feel welcome and you might actually build the business. read more

First time in the newsroom other than to walk through on our guided tour. We were going into the Safehouse for date night no kids! As we walked past the newsroom window we saw it was busy with some paint thing so we walked in,and we are thrilled we did. Our favorite server aka agent orange was bartending. She greeted us the moment we walked through the door. She remembered our regular drink order and made it right away. I can honestly say her old fashion was way better than the MKE that she was honest enough to tell us right away she had no clue how to make. We had a very very nice evening it was amazing and the food well all we got were appetizers and they were great! Will be back again! read more

I'm sad to change my score for Newsroom Pub. It used to be a place my friends and I enjoyed, but my last 3 visits have been terrible. One of the times I called before ubering over to see if they were open only to arrive and find the opposite. The next 2 times I planned to go for trivia with my friends. The first time upon arrival we inquired with the bartender if they were having trivia and we were told yes. We ordered drinks and waited 20 minutes past the start time, no trivia. Before my most recent visit I called again to make sure they were open and there would be trivia, yes to both. We arrived and got our drinks from a bartender who was quite gruff, so much so I commented to my friends I felt we were at a theme bar where treating people poorly was the theme. We saw the trivia host so at least we knew we hadn't waisted the trip. But again after 20 minutes we inquired and were told there would be no trivia. Wow! And shortly after we were told it was last call??? The place wasn't empty. We decided then and there we would not be returning. read more

If I lived in Milwaukee, The Newsroom would be "my bar", absolutely no question. This place is great! I can some it up in one word: character. You want history? Check. (Um...Teddy Roosevelt's signature was on the wall, dated 1903. From when he was President!) Relevance? I believe that to this day, the official Clubhouse of the Milwaukee Press Club. Oddities? Yep. the petrified cat above the bar handles that. Plus- it's attached to the Safe House, an oddity of a bar in its own right. Good beer selection? Absolutely. I developed an affinity for Spotted Cow over my drunken sailing weekend to Milwaukee and they had it on tap! It's really too bad I chose to switch to whiskey as the night wore on, but that's another story... Finally- friendly, friendly bar staff! Super nice, all of them. One of them made us what he touted was "the best lemondrop shot ever", and he was right. Newsroom Pub, you are a gem. I am flabbergasted that you weren't completely packed to the gills that Saturday night. What is wrong with Milwaukee citizens? The bartender was nice when we came in, then really rude, then nice again. Came in with my 3 girlfriends... Then immediately after a group of like 8 people walked in. I've NEVER seen a bartender who can't multi-task. We had to order our drink, then pay... and then he would go on to the next person. It's like he couldn't take all four of our drink orders at the same time. Huh? Really? So, for the group of 12 that were there (my group and the other) it was like a 15 minute ordering ordeal... Fantastic themed bar. Lots of little nooks and crannies to hideaway and have drinks or hang with friends. Secret way in secret way out. It is a very fun place to enjoy some adult beverages. Unfortunately, we did not get to taste anything since the wait was so long. It was suggested to our group that we make a reservation in the future, even on a weekday, and even though only about 30% of the space was occupied by customers. The Newsroom pub was a fine place to grab a quick beer when I was in Milwaukee in October. The walls are decorated with autographs from what I assume to be famous patrons of the bar and the vibe is very low key. There is also an embalmed cat above the bar. The tap selection is decent with some local midwestern offering. Nothing brilliant about the place but it gets to job done. There's also some affiliation with the Milwaukee Press Club but I can't determine what that is. read more

I really enjoy this bar. It's one of the first ones I went to in Milwaukee, and it was one of the reasons why I decided to move out here. All the people there were incredibly nice, it's quiet, and it's even got a nice decor. The fact that you can watch the people going into the Safehouse is an added bonus. read more

The Newsroom is fun, I used to enjoy Wednesday night karaoke here, but that is no longer. The autograph collection is probably among the finest in the world, but there's about a half dozen beers on tap and that's it. Prices are average, service can be hit or miss, and I wouldn't go here alone, because it doesn't always seem particularly welcoming. read more

Stumbled into this bar when I was waiting for a concert in Pabst theater. It is a nice, cozy bar with cool news, publications related decor. The bartender was very nice and attentive. I tried the $5 Moscow mule and it is pretty good. It has a good balance of ginger beer and vodka. The atmosphere is very relaxing, not too loud, so you can have a nice convert with your friends. read more

This is a GREAT place to go before or after a show, particularly since your in the theater district in Milwaukee. If you go after a show, you're likely to run into casts from shows that are performing. (I once partied with the cast of the touring musical "Grease," including Taylor Hicks from American Idol - very cool guy.) The autographs on the walls include everyone from Motely Crew and Bon Jovi to Mae West and Rita Hayworth. I with they had more food and on a more regular basis, but it's a great spot all the same. read more
