I always got my car inspected here and also had some new brakes put in. My family were customers in the days when it was Ray and Eddie's back in the 1970s. But I will never go back. Another auto shop told me my brakes were shot after I had just gotten them done at the Gulf. I went back to ask the Gulf about it and the man in charge became very angry and unpleasant. After going to Newton Gulf a few years for annual car inspections I finally had an oil change there. Usually I went to another garage requiring an appointment. Newton Gulf said come on in. George was v friendly both in-person & on the phone. The price was fair, service excellent. Afterward George told me that the brakes were low, needed a brake job for front brakes. I had been told by prior garage that my brakes were wearing & would need a brake job probably at next service. Again, the price was fair. Since then the smell like something was burning is gone & the previous garage had been unable to fix that. I like the service at Newton Gulf. These people really helped me recently. I had a flat tire, I left down to the station at 5:45 PM, and a nice man let me leave the car, and said we would be hooked up first thing in the morning. Got a call at 8:30 AM, car was done by 9:30 AM, $35 for a plug. He could've charged us $300 for a new tire. Grateful! read more

I brought my car in to get a tire plugged and an inspection. I get a call a couple hours later saying "you have a big problem, two of your lugnuts were snapped off." I told the mechanic that I put them on by hand without an impact and they were fine less then 12 hours ago. he says he has to order the parts and is going to charge me 1.5 hours of labor. this place is totally INCOMPETENT and they don't take responsibility for their actions. he showed me the lugnuts and they were clearly cross threaded when they put the repaired tire back on. stay away from this place. these guys are sketchy. read more

Ok, this is a good gas station from someone who knows! wife and i frequently get oil changes and inspections here, and they can accomodate you within the hour or less. George Audi runs the show, and is an honest, fun guy. He is lebanese, quite animated, and an electrical engineer by trade too. The garage mechanics are technically good, even for the big jobs (transmissions, rebuilding classic engines, differentials, etc). Finally, i have noticed that their gas prices may be slightly higher than other local stations, but sometimes their premium is the lowest $ in town too. Overall, you would be hard pressed to find a nicer, more honest garage in a usually ugly faced suburb of a big city. The customers who cram in there are the worst part of the place; they are the usual "get-out-of-my -way-i-am-too-important" newton townies. read more

The head mechanic doesn't know his ass from his elbow. My inspection failed; however, the component that was mentioned doesn't have any issues. I can't begin to understand what made him think it did. Once again, I go back to trusting the mechanic my family as known for 20 years. Good: It is very easy to get gas here. Bad: Everything else. And don't forget the temper. read more

Took my Toyota Sienna here for the yearly inspection. I came in and the guy at the front, who seemed friendly enough, told me there was one car in front of me, so it'd be ~30 minutes. The whole thing ended up taking over an hour and a half. My car failed as I expected (check engine light was on). When trying to ask the mechanic, he just brushed me off (extremely unfriendly guy) and didn't tell me anything. Maybe all this is commonplace but the whole experience rubbed me the wrong way. One of my windshield wipers flew off in the 93 tunnel. Then next thing I know I am in A DRIVING rainstorm on the Mass Pike. It was unbelievably dangerous. I could only drive by looking out the passenger side windshield. Finally I made it into Newton and stopped at the Gulf station next to my doctors office. Quickly they solved the problem. They treated my wife very poorly when she went to get the car inspected. They informed her after the fact that they had gone ahead and replaced a bulb that she would have to pay for (no consultation), and just generally treated her like she was stupid because she was a (pregnant) lady. I've taken my car to Newton Center Gulf for a state inspection and recently when I was having some engine trouble. On both occasions, I've been helped by George, who I believe is the head mechanic and owner (could be wrong about that though). In both cases, George has proven to be honest, helpful and genuinely a nice guy. My brother is a mechanic in New Hampshire, so I'm generally reluctant to go to a garage around Boston, but when my Check Engine light came on and later noticed some possible knocking, I wasn't about to drive to New Hampshire. George and his crew checked the entire engine, including the EGR valve which had shown up in the Check Engine code, and found the problem to be rather simple (and inexpensive for me), but that saved my engine from destruction. They did a great job, and did it honestly, quickly and without putting me in debt. read more

I can't say enough about the people who work at this gas station. I had a very unfortunate fall while pumping my gas a week lago, and the people who worked there rushed to my aid and were so kind and comforting while i waited for the ambulance to come. We live in Newton Center and George has been awesome for our family and our three cars over the years. He is very knowledgeable and his office is open until 10pm each night in case you are too busy to pay and pick up for your car during the work day. I live in fear of being ripped off and have always been happy with the charges, in fact I have had the good kind of sticker shock on multiple occasions. George can occasionally be gruff but he is a nice guy and very fair and trustworthy. Our old higlander had leaky alloy rims and I had taken it to several different shops for repair without success. George fixed it on his first try with bead sealer and charged a very reasonable price for the repair. We recommend him highly! read more

I've had great experiences here, with George always helping me to find a cheaper way to make otherwise tremendously expensive repairs on both of my 2 older cars. To me, fixing a brake light for someone for $10 in order to pass the inspection is a feature and not a bug. Running around town to do it myself and then coming back for the re-inspection takes time, and to me time is money, but that's just my take. read more

The mechanic is dishonest and extremely rude - yelled at me with other customers present!!! Never going back and urge others to avoid. Went in for car inspection. First off he told me that since the exterior of the front light covers was dirty that it will fail the inspection and it would cost $15 to clean them. I said I would clean them myself and was about to walk away when he said it won't fail the inspection. This was to encourage me to have the inspection there and have the cracked side mirror replaced for which he would fail the inspection. When I asked him for the cost of the mirror he complained that he was an honest man and I was doubting his integrity by assuming that he would charge me anything over the supplier. Begrudgingly he called the supplier and gave me a price and his service fee which I okayed. The next day he installed the mirror and in the bill included a disposal fee. A disposal fee for a small mirror? I understand it for oil and chemicals but this is unnecessary and he did not include in the initial quote. I refused to pay. After some unpleasantness he asked the accountant to take it out of the bill. I pointed out to the accountant that his calculation did not take out the tax on the disposal fee. The accountant ran to the mechanic and said "she won't pay the tax either" while I was only referring to the tax on the refused service. At that point the mechanic started to yell at me in a horrible loud voice. I paid the amount they were asking and left. After the dirty light cover episode I had already decided I wouldn't have my car inspection there as he would likely find irrelevant things that needed cosmetic care and fail the inspection to make money fixing them. read more

I took my car here for an inspection sticker and they *attempted* to "remove" a $45 Entertainment Coupon Book out of the trunk of my car. A brake light bulb needed to be replaced ($10 !!) so the guy were messing around in the trunk and I got a strange feeling about how much shuffling was going on in and around the trunk, but I was giving him "space" and was on my cell phone while waiting. When I went to retrieve my car, I just had a bad feeling about the way the guy was acting. I backed my car out and then before departing the driveway, I looked in my trunk and BINGO one of my Entertainment Books was missing (I had two -- so they must have felt I could spare one...) I parked in the driveway and went in to speak with him about it. The guy was denying any knowledge. I knew my book went missing there so let the guy know I was going to phone the police, and then just went to wait in my car. As I was waiting for the Newton police to arrive, the guy brought the book out to me that he "found" in the garage. That was nice and all, but didn't cause me to phone the police and have them back off. The officer arrived and took statements from each of us individually and together -- the guy's story didn't pass the sniff test. The police said that since I had the book back - and given the value - it would be best just to move on, but that the Newton Police would log it in case there are repeat reports. Obviously, I'm not giving any business to or entrusting any work on my car to someone who would remove my property while I'm a mere 30 feet away. Not good. read more

George, the owner of the Gulf station , has taken car of my family's cars for 15 years. He is the most honest, caring man and treats his customers as his family. He has rescued my daughter more than once when her car has broken down. He has shown her how to put air in her tires properly (ok, has shown me too!) . I have never written a review for a local business, but when george calls to wish me happy holidays on all of the holidays I celebrate , I can't help but to tell all my friends... and anyone else who will hear me. George has taken wonderful care of our cars for years. He is always watching out for us, does not recommend unnecessary repairs, reminds me of things I need to take care of, talks straight with us. Furthermore, I plan to call the business bureau because the way that I was treated was highly unfair. George charged me $1000 for a part that should have cost $500. There seems to be some consistency here with people getting cheated. My little sister's car broke down around the corner from here so we brought it there to have it checked out. George told us that multiple issues including the air conditioning compressor and fan belt needed to be replaced. He wanted to charge us over $2000 to replace everything and said it would be worth it because the car was in such good shape. This car according to Kelley Blue Book is worth less than $1800 in excellent condition which it is not. We had the car towed to our usual mechanic and he told us that the air conditioning compressor was totally fine and there were no major issues. They fixed the fan belt and a couple other small issues for less than a couple hundred dollars... I believe that is considered attempted ROBBERY and complete dishonesty on George's part. I too will be in touch with the Better Business Bureau and Gulf in regards to the disgusting practices they are maintaining at this location. read more

George has been completely honest with me in my year of dealing with him. We've used him seven times and we have both our cars with him. I have solid experience wrenching japanese motorcycles and usually have a good idea of what's wrong but hate working on cars. I've had him do electrical faults with replacement of sensors and airbags. maintenance/fluid changes of transmission and cooling system, replace front rotors and pads, fix broken/jammed dashboard buttons, tires and a battery. There was a tricky problem with my chassis that George called correctly. He told me what the problem was and sent me to the dealer for engineer analysis and a second opinion (because I did not agree with his). His analysis of the chassis vibration was right on and the dealer ripped me off selling me parts I did not need - George backed me up to get a partial refund. His prices are competitive, not cheap but fair. None of his repairs have failed. He's a decent guy too. If you live in the area, you'll want to use him. There are a couple of negative reviews here - not many negatives for a car mechanic. I think the statements in them are highly improbable, knowing George for more than a year now. As Phillip K's review points out, George is an educated guy, an electrical engineer with home and family - I think any kind of dishonesty would be beneath him. read more
