Very disappointed with my experience. The inspection sticker was not placed properly on my windshield, and when I asked if it could be corrected, I was told I could just pay again if my "OCD bothered me enough." I found that response extremely disrespectful and dismissive. There were also other employees standing around staring, which made an already uncomfortable situation even worse. I had my children in the car at the time, so I was especially disappointed by how the situation was handled. I wasn't asking for anything unreasonable--I simply wanted the sticker put on correctly. Mistakes happen, but refusing to fix a simple mistake and then making the customer feel like they're the problem is not good customer service. I will not be returning. read more

I went to Route 1 Auto around one month ago for a bad clicking sound from my passenger-side front wheel upon acceleration. I was advised to go get it checked out from a friend of mine who works at Valvoline down the street. Man, am I glad he did. Route 1 Auto is run by a professional staff who are as knowledgeable as they are friendly. All throughout the diagnosis of my vehicle they took videos and photos so that they can safely show me exactly what parts of the car they are talking about. Route 1 Auto was able to safely and effectively solve my problem without breaking the bank. While I was at first hesitant to let strangers work on my car, this experience has emboldened me to give strangers the benefit of the doubt, because now I will always remember how positive it was when I did the same for Route 1 Auto. Even a month or so after getting the work done, it has been floating in my mind to make sure to write them a review. For quality work at fair prices, you can't go wrong with Route 1 Auto. This is for inspection stickers only... Most (but not all) of these guys are cons. They'll tell you something minor is wrong: a headlight, a windshield wiper. They'll offer to replace it for you at 4x the cost. They nitpick everything because they want to sell you their low-quality over-priced parts. I've been here about a handful of times and my family has patronized this place as well. The majority of time they'll tell you something is wrong and threaten to fail you if you put up any resistance. Examples: I took my car there right after getting an oil change from Valvoline (that place inspected all my lights) and somehow in one day my headlight failed (I gave them the benefit of the doubt for this one because I didn't know better). My fiancé took her brand new car for inspection and they told her the windshield wiper was 'streaking,' and offered to replace them both. They threatened to fail her unless she replaced it. She ended up just getting one, and left. My father-in-law was told his headlight was "too foggy" and they would fail him unless he bought the entire headlight assembly for $300. He said 'no' and they miraculously passed him. Con artists and scum bags. Avoid like the plague. read more

My daughter unfortunately listened to her great aunt and decided to buy a car from Boch Honda. She went back to get an inspection sticker and the service counter said they were backed up and said Rt 1 Auto right next door could probably help her out sooner. Well, she brings her 4 year old Civic over to them and the inspection guy take her car. 5 minutes later, he says he has to fail her for windshield wipers being worn. He said he could conveniently replace them for $40 right then and there and she could get her sticker. My baby is no dummy and she said no thanks to the guy. Well, the guy finishes up the inspection and brings the car out. According to her, he gets out and says he had to fail her for a warn upper ball joint and her headlights being out of alignment... ON A 4 YEAR OLD CIVIC!!!! She handled the situation better than I would have. We brought it to a mechanic right down the street from us in Somerville and the guy laughed when we showed him the report. He put her car on the lift and went over every inch. He said there was nothing wrong with the chassis or the headlights. One of the wipers did have a 1/8" tear in one blade. He said he hears about shady places doing this scam all the time. So, long story short - avoid this place, especially if Boch suggests to go here. read more

I've had two recent experiences with car service/maintenance here. Oil change, brakes and rotors, bearings, etc. I use to go to the dealer for service, but it seemed like every time I went even for a basic oil change the prices kept jumping pretty drastically ($90). The dealer kept pressing me about installing a new exhaust due to it "depreciating" and even commented that it would leak soon. I took it to Rt One Auto Service for a second opinion because i actually almost always go there for inspections anyway. At time I explained to George how I was looking to find a new auto service that I can build a relationship with and I wanted to break away from the dealer completely, who in my opinion was trying to make me spend unnecessary amounts money each visit. My exhaust is fine, still to this day. Rt One Auto fixed some bearings I was having issues with, and it's riding smoother and better than ever! Yeah, I spent a good chunk of change- but on some big jobs, but they are honest and practical. They cut some things down for me to help me save as much as I could. They had a real hard time with one of my bearings and it took them almost 3hrs to finally get it off. I know I would have probably spent my life savings at the dealership if I had it done there. I did have to leave it there over night only because while repairing the bearing they noticed one of my ABS cords was just about ready to break and they had to get the part directly from the dealership. The customer service is always professional and the guys are nice and welcoming. They were able to get me in quickly both times. I will say after reading some of the recent reviews, and to be transparent here, I sent my dad down there between the two visits that I had for an inspection sticker that he needed for his truck and they almost rejected his because of foggy headlight covers. I have never heard of an inspection failing from that, and it probably deterred my dad from probably going back, that is the only reason why I am giving 4 stars. I forget what he paid to have them cleaned so it would pass. I will plan to review again in the future after more visits. read more

I felt locked in and put on the spot with their threat of a fail sticker. I paid the extra money for the wipers and just told myself I'd deal with it later, but also I have a dash camera and was going to check it out on video during inspection. Right there on camera it caught the guy lift my wiper blade up and PURPOSELY RIPPED WIPER RIGHT OFF THE ARM. I went in to get my car checked out after I accidentally drove over a huge rock. I was worried about damage to my exhaust. The guy seemed very nice and helpful. He put my car up on the lift and told me I had minor damage to the exhaust that did not need fixing right away. He then went on to say that I needed new rear brake pads and I should do that and a routine oil change immediately. I went ahead and did so. they charged me about $800. I left and a day later, my check engine light started flashing. So I called the guy up and he told me to come in and they would take a look. When I got there the drone of the exhaust was getting worse and very loud. The did a diagnostic check on my car and said I needed to fix the exhaust after all and it was going to cost another $700! I was really upset since I felt that he should have fixed that first as I had requested. He then was not very forthright about giving me an appoint to get the repairs done. He said they were very busy. I said good bye and left quietly. I felt conned and decided not to deal with them again because the guy was unapologetic and he did not even try to find a way to rectify the situation. Venture here at your own peril. These guys are opportunistic and dishonest. Poor customer service. read more

Do not get your car inspected here! They tried to tell me that my windshield wiper that was less than 6 months old needed to be replaced and it "mysteriously" came off while they were testing it. Very professional, fair, and knowledgeable. I stopped in (no appointment) to see if they could quickly change a headlight - as I was traveling later in the day. No problem was the response. Despite full garage bays, they had me pull up, and the owner did it himself. 15 minutes and I was on my way. The place is always busy yet the turnaround is quick. I have been in before for some front-end work and the owner even gave me a lift to my nearby place of employment while the work was being completed. Try that at the larger/chain shops. I stopped in for a Carco Inspection because I switched insurance carriers on my two year old vehicle and this kid with dyed blond hair named "DJ" with ear rings in both ears literally molested my car. He was rubbing both his hands across the hood, doors, and roof..He came back with this report that if you read it you would have thought my car was in a wreck. It looked like an accident report. I asked him to show me what damaged he was talking about, and he got very angry. He showed me this tiny tiny chip in the hood, and he said my rear door was damaged so I looked at it myself and it was some small piece of tar like substance that rubbed right off. He then took my insurance paperwork and refused to give it back to me. I said if you needed a copy of it you could make one, then he flipped out yelling profanities, he slammed the door to the shop, made a copy, and gave me the copies and kept the original. It clearly says on Carco's website that no paperwork is required. I would never step foot near this shop, and I don't care if it's a family run business. IT'S VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE AND UNPROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOR. I understand there might be a lot of insurance fraud out there but this was ridiculous! I have a $1,000 deductible but you never know I might make a claim for a tiny chip on my hood or some tar on my rear door. I'm taking my car elsewhere for a second inspection. read more

I just brought my car here for an inspection. They are wicked speedy & got it done in less than 15 minutes. It's so much better than the inspection place in the Hyundai dealership. Last year they ripped me off saying I need new wiper blades & a little tiny bulb for the plate lights, charged over $100. Plus I waisted almost half my day waiting there! Told me all I needed to pass inspection was passenger ball joint and I then replaced it. Came back 3 days later and the loser inspection kid tells me I will need the driver's side ball joint done in order to pass inspection. I got in a fight with the employee and manager and they told me to go screw. I am challenging the failed inspection with the state police and trying to have this place closed down or fined. They also passed two of my friends for illegal tint and then when I questioned them they denied ever doing so. Only place I will bring my car and I always suggest them. Usually timely when fixing an issue and explain what is going on. Every time I call they are usually able to take my car the same day or the next. I never feel like I am being scammed here and they are really great people. Bobby the owner is a good guy and super personable. Inspections are quick and easy, and if there is something blocking you from getting a sticker they are more then willing to figure out what they can do for you to help you get on your way faster and with no rejection. The guys at Route 1 Auto Service in Norwood are knowledgeable, honest and trustworthy! I took my old car to them after the transmission died (the car also had other issues). After going over my car problems with Bob, the owner, I decided, rather than fix my old car (179,000+ miles), I would shop for a certified used car. Bob, told us he does car inspections for people prior to their purchasing a car. Boy, am I glad we had Bob and his crew inspect the certified used cars first. One certified car had a leaky axle, a plug in a tire, missing air filters, and other problems too important to overlook. The car dealer said this car had to pass their rigorous inspection in order to be "certified". How could these problems not get spotted during their certification inspection? Of course I passed on that car. I did find a car that only needed replacement of windshield wipers and air filters. Which the dealer agreed to replace. But I could not have discovered any of these problems if I did not have the cars inspected first. Buying a car is way too expensive to do blindfolded. Get the used car checked first. So, if you're looking for a mechanic or shopping for a used car, bring the car to these guys, you won't be sorry. read more

My wife has recently been taking our vehicles to Route One Auto Service for various repairs. Each time a vehicle has been repaired, I am always shocked at the "extras" that appear on the final bill. This last time, although minor as compared to previous visits, they replaced the wiper blades that I had just replaced the day before the vehicle went in for service! Further, they are on the "auto mile" in Norwood, which has every make of vehicle produced within two miles of Route One Auto Service. As such, instead of getting parts from an aftermarket supplier, Bob just goes to whatever dealer he needs to go the get the parts for the needed repairs. As a result, the parts bill is always at least double what it would be if he had used parts from an aftermarket supplier instead of dealer parts. Also, the shop rate (labor rate) at Route One Auto Service is comparable with most new car dealers shop rate. Further, if this is not bad enough, Bob the owner and ASE certified mechanic does not do any of the repair work. Rather most of the work is performed by interns from various automotive repair schools in the area. In my opinion, the reason for going to an independent repair facility is to get higher quality personal service and to pay less than going to a new car dealer for repairs. Neither is the case at Route One Auto Service. I am always totally shocked at the total cost for the work being performed. This last time was the final straw. My wife went in to have her vehicle inspected for the State required annual inspection and to have the AC system charged. The vehicle did not pass inspection according to the report, because one of the license plate lights was not working. Then when they had the vehicle, they claim that the vehicle needed extensive front end suspension repairs. Mind you, the vehicle just had extensive front end suspension repairs one year ago. None the less, since this was my wife's vehicle, she authorized the repairs. While performing the front end suspension repairs, the intern doing the work, broke one of the oil cooler lines. As a result they needed to be replaced. Once again, Bob went to the new car dealer to get the parts and charged full price for this repair as well. So instead of getting an expected $300 dollar bill, $1400 dollars later, my wife had her vehicle back. As a result of this last experience at Route One Auto Service, we have decided that we might as well go to the new car dealers for repairs. At least there,we know in advance that we are going to be ripped off. read more

Can't recall being failed as much as this place, some were legitimate but some stuff seemed nit picky.The last time I went the kid said he felt something on the tie rods I could not get any play myself.Make sure your wiper blades are brand new or you will surely fail inspection as well.The long and short of it for me is I get my work done elsewhere and state inspections as well. read more

I took the car in to get an inspection sticker. He met me in the line and drove the car into the bay. It wasn't a long wait, but when he came out there was a big rejection sticker on the windshield. He then told me that the drivers side seatbelt was a little frayed and could be comprimised so HE decided the car would not pass inspection BUT the manufacturer part would only be $225-$250 for a new one. REALLY?! I had the seatbelt looked at by 2 other mechanics who said the belt was perfectly safe. I found out later that he did the same thing to a colleague of mine who he gave a rejection sticker to because the HE didn't think the paint was dark enough on the license plate. So in both cases, the cars were now flagged in the system, and my $35 inspection was a $335 dollar inspection, and she had to give up her deceased mothers plates..which were fine by the way, because of one guys opinion. This place is such a scam if you have an alcohol motering system!!!!! First of all if you have a coupon for first month free with intilation ..... well its not.... because when you go for the first down load its not free!!!! they charge 95$$ (and they always charge each month after youve had it for four weeks) even though you sign a contract stating it will be $65.... with insurance..per month, then they make you pay $30 for a letter that you have to bring to the registry for when its time to be removed..... even though if you call the monitoring system they tell you that you do not need a letter......in the contract that was signed it states that it is $50 to remove but they charge you more......... and make sure you show up way before closing time because they will not remove it..... and if you are dealing with "Larry" you better catch him in a good mood, because that man has a temper and does not work with the public well,,,,, bipolar much??????? read more

Brought my car for inspection and they told me I needed a headlight bulb replaced that was out in order to pass inspection. While I could have done myself I decided to save myself the time and had them do it. They came back to tell me they had to charge me more than originally quoted because they had to put it on the lift. I left feeling frustrated for paying $35 to replace a bulb (15 mins to do it) but was still satisfied up until that point. I got home and parked the car and walked around front to look at the headlights only to find that a bulb was STILL OUT! I had to drive back to the shop to point this out to them. The guy who worked on the car said that wasn't even the bulb he replaced leaving me extremely confused. Then they said they didn't even see that one and while this was going on the guy pulled the little bulb out and replaced it in 30 seconds. I was sure they would say sorry for the mixup and for having to come back a second time and just let me leave as the bulb couldn't have cost more than $1 but he had the audacity to tell me he needed another $10 for that one. I would have replaced it myself had I known I was going to be charged again! $35 inspection on a 2012 car in excellent working condition cost me $80 as I needed 2 bulbs replaced and had to return to the shop twice. I will not be visiting this place again. read more

I went in on a Saturday to get a routine inspection and came out with my car not starting. They were very helpful at first because I've been there many times before. The owner said he would check it out on Monday and let me know what the issue was. He called me and told me with repairs I was looking at about $1,000 in repairs and kept tacking on other issues I could get fixed while he was doing some work. I told him I would have to speak to my mother since it was her car and I would get back to him on what I would like to do. My mother decided to have it towed somewhere else and do the repairs elsewhere. I called the owner to let him know and he became irate and demanded I pay him $300 in diagnostic time. Even though he had NEVER once said he would charge me to look at it. If he had said it would be $300 just to look I would have said to forget it. He harassed me and the tow guy and would not let me take my car. I told him I should only have to pay for the inspection ($35) and not a bogus $300 charge. He then told me they never even did the car inspection (even though I watched them do it for 20 minutes) and I should compromise with him and give him $150 because they're a small business. I paid him $35 for an inspection they ended up never doing in the first place and I found out elsewhere my repair would cost about $230. Route 1 Auto Service is dishonest and unprofessional. read more
