was inclined to write this review after my recent experience. i have been a dog mom going on 12 years, and thank god this was my first emergency experience with my daughter's dog, my "gwanson." he had been (tmi) having diarrhea with what i believed was blood in it, and he wasn't eating or drinking. since he only weighs 8 lbs., i was extremely worried. i searched for a local animal hospital one evening and was told to bring him here. a friend immediately warned me that they were "money-hungry", but because i was so concerned about my dog, i wanted him to be checked out. [[HIGHLIGHT]]the staff was pleasant enough.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] however, they proceeded to muzzle my dog. i had warned them that he can snap, but he was weak & wasn't showing any signs of aggression. what i realized afterward was that they wanted to take him away from me while i decided what services i wanted to approve. basically holding my dog hostage. they presented me with a low-end & high-end estimate for his care. the high estimate was approximately $1,800, including a $200 emergency exam fee just for walking through the door. the low estimate was still around $1,000 for bloodwork, a fecal test, & other basic diagnostics. i was shocked. the next morning, i called vetco in kinnelon, a full-service veterinary hospital located inside petco. the woman i spoke with was wonderful and told me that bloodwork would cost around $200, not nearly $2,000. the only difference is that vetco is not a 24-hour emergency hospital like newton. thankfully, my dog was stable enough to wait until the next day to be seen. in my opinion, these prices take advantage of worried pet parents who feel they have no other choice during an emergency. when you're scared for your pet, it's hard to think clearly, and that makes these costs even more upsetting. i found the experience very disheartening. to all of my fellow dog moms and pet parents: if your pet's condition allows you to wait until regular business hours, i highly recommend calling vetco in kinnelon before agreeing to thousands of dollars in emergency charges. it may save you a significant amount of money while still getting your fur baby the care they need. do better newton!!! read more

I just got back from Newton Veterinary Hospital. I brought my 15 year old Cavachon there for emergency treatment of a prolapsed uterus. That is an emergency situation that usually requires major surgery. Honestly after reading all these bad reviews I was reluctant to go to Newton. I full well expected to be told the kindest thing would be to euthanize her. However Dr Simermeyer found a less invasive solution. After less than two hours my little Maggie came out awake and alert. She is home sleeping on my bed. No complications so far and I hope for a full recovery. PLUS, the final cost was considerably under what I expected, and also under what they estimated. Very fair pricing and great service. What a great job! I hope I never NEED to go back, but if I do I will go with full confidence I'll get top tier care. read more

I have been to this hospital a few times they're horrible. I would not recommend them even if my dog was dying. I would drive an hour to another hospital. My last straw with this clinic was when my dog was sick he had diarrhea. It was pretty bad and I brought them in. He really just needed maybe a anabiotic and something for the diarrhea. They gave me an estimate that was like $1000. They wanted me to run all these tests and told me they would not treat my dog unless I paid for these tests and I said that's ridiculous so I picked up my dog left called my regular vet in the morning brought him in my regular vet charged me for a regular office visit and gave him an anabiotic and something for the diarrhea. Saw the test they wanted ran and said we don't recommend them. My other issue was my dog was this was a different time was pooping worms they were crawling down his legs up his back. It was the most disgusting thing I wanted to bring them in right away, cause I couldn't have this in my house. Of course it was a puppy that we have gone and he was wormed twice and still could not get rid of the worms so we knew exactly what the problem was. They would not treat him for worms unless I had a stool sample so I got a cup caught the worms as they dropped from his butt held out the cup and said now, can you treat him for worms? I recently had an emergency with my senior cat. Having lived in Milford, PA for just over a year (coming from Rockland County, NY) I have been very concerned with not having 24 hr vet hospital close by. Especially since we have 10 animals, 7 cats & 3 small dogs. We have not really found a local vet who we connected with very well, so mostly been traveling back to our old area to one of our two main vets, to get vet care. Instead, they presented a $6,000-$8,000 estimate for a four-day stay and required a 50% deposit ($4,000) up front. Within 18 hours, before any extended care could occur, the hospital exhausted nearly the entire deposit and the puppy was euthanized. This purposeful omission of critical medical information gave my son false hope and led to thousands in unnecessary charges. UPDATE: DO NOT BRING YOUR PETS HERE I followed up with my own vet a few days ago. They did blood work and X-rays and found no cancer, and it was infact just an infection. Exact words. No blood work, missed the scab entirely and had to bring that up and how the lump literally came out of nowhere in 24 hours (yes I'm not a vet, but I am a nurse and I find it odd to not do blood work to rule out infection first before diagnosis cancer....) but they only could do surgery to find out, not even locally numb the area and take a biopsy that way, full surgery then send it off. Why did I as an owner have to call out that there was a scab that your vet missed, then said oh then it must be an infection well do an iv and antibiotics. But you can't do blood work? I just don't even really know where to begin. First off let me say I was returning to this establishment because a couple of years ago I received, to the best of my recollection, decent quality service in a reasonable amount of time. Upon returning however this was no longer the case. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not completely unreasonable. I know it's shortly after a major holiday and people and places get busy and distracted and perhaps are short staffed or whatever the circumstances may be, but ... I waited two hours just for my pet to be seen. OK, holiday, busy, yada yada yada not all that bad or that much of a big deal and considering I didn't have an appointment and was a walk in. I get called into the room and the nurse or whatever takes some more info asks more questions and takes my pet for vitals, returns, and says someone will be with you as soon as they can to go over, I assume what her diagnosis is/was. [[HIGHLIGHT]]45 minutes then proceed to pass by without a peep from anyone about anything. I pop my head out the waiting room door and someone asks me something to which I reply, is anyone coming back anytime soon?[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Another 15-20 minutes go by and I pick my pet up and proceed to walk out. I go to the counter and asked the receptionist what they think I owe them for their services so I can pay up and she says, nope you're good to go. I left after 3 hours of my time were spent just waiting, 2 of which were understandable, one of which is inexcusable. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Apparently whatever else was going on was more important than me and my pet. If zero stars were an option that's what I would give. I brought my dog this weekend to the ER. After 2 hours we finally made it to an exam room. The room immediately felt dirty and unsanitary to me. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I wish I could give a higher rating because my dog deserves to be seen by people who actually look at pets as people's family and not as dollar signs but this is simply not the case.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My dog presented with a runny nose and dry cough. He was not having any stomach issues besides lighter eating because he can not smell or taste due to his cold. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were brought to the back of this very dirty and smelly room where a very kind and knowledgeable tech met with us. She was the highlight of the stay.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] From there our visit went downhill. The doctor took over an hour to see us and when she arrived she said that she could not hear his breathing over his heartbeat so he needed xrays. Along with that he needed bloodwork and pcr test that would take 5 days for results all to see what was wrong. The Dr said depending on results he might need to be hospitalized there for observation with iv fluids. The bill that took another 45 minutes to create was 2000 not including any overnight stay. We disagreed and did not want the pcr test so the bill was now 1400 including any meds he might need at 175. After the blood draw and xrays the Dr said that the tests all came back without showing anything. She said things can appear in the next day so we could come back and do more testing if needed. She said he could have kennel cough or some dog virus so she gave him a bottle of antibiotics. The same antibiotics he would have gotten without the xray. The same antibiotics he would have gotten with pcr test. They also gave him a shot for anti nausea and fluids under the skin to help his stomach even though he had no stomach issues. The kicker was when the Dr asked if I wanted to take some food home for him to try. I said sure and they charged me 27.00. All in all the bill was 1800... and I didnt get copies of the xrays I requested. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When I tried to make a follow up appt. they said they did not have any openings for a while so I could come back through emergency[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. I guess that's how they can upcharge.. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We had visited a few times for preventative care - the staff was always pretty rude and it was very expensive.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I had planned to find another facility because of the cost. Unfortunately our dog was hit by a car and I assumed since they had her history it would be a good idea to visit to diagnose the extent of her injuries. Well that was a mistake, it cost $2,153 for them to give her pain relief and x-rays. Including $1,012.19 for x-rays which misdiagnosed the actual broken bone. We ended up taking her out of there as quickly as possible. Do yourself a favor and visit ANY other place than this - except of course any other facility also owned by Don Costlow. [[HIGHLIGHT]]After I originally posted this review, there was a reply that the office would reach out to me - but two years later, nothing. Now they deleted the reply.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. It should also be noted if you want to use heart worm medication, this place will require bloodwork every six months or they will not approve the prescription - even if you have been diligent about monthly dosing. After consulting with my lawyer, I can confidently say that I was right to leave the clinic without paying the bill presented to me for the "treatment" of my cat. Clinic employees do not have the right to take a cat or a dog and carry it to a room where the owner is not. With the exception of cases when the animal needs an examination using equipment that cannot be placed in the examination room. Such as x-rays, ultrasound, and surgery. Other procedures are performed in the presence of the owner. And since the owner does not see what manipulations are being carried out with his pet, even a kiss from Pope Benedict can be included in the payment list, and you should pay for it? How can the employees prove to me that a basic examination of the ears and teeth, which were also on the payment list, and much more were performed For $577. So, know that if your pet was taken to a room other than the surgery room and x-ray, then your money will be illegally taken from you. And you have the right not to pay such bills. read more

Today my BIL took my beagle in. He is not well, acting in pain and not eating unless he is medicated. 7 hours later my beagle still has not seen a vet. not even a vet tech to check weight or vitals. my BIL tells a very nice receptionist he has to leave because he has waited 7 hours. That he would rather make an app for normal visitation because he has work in the morning. ANother staff member began yelling at him and saying for him to leave. Then someone from the back began to threaten my BIL with violence. My BIL is from Britain. he is always polite and he is not the type to be aggressive. WHen He saw they were obviously trying to cause something he left. Later we get a call from NJ State Police. We thought it was a scamcall (as the NJ state police have pinned on their social media) so we ignored it. Finally they keep calling and they say that the hospital is refusing to see our beloved sweet beagle ever. They will deny him care if they bring him back. (which isnt surprising) These Staff here are masochists. They did not want to see my dog at all. Now they want to charge us for a visit??? We will be seeing a lawyer. The fact they threatened my BIL with violence, and called the police when they were the ones who were aggressors and now denial of care.... well we can only consider this malpractice. read more

My cat was given a dose of ZORBIUM post OP. This is a very new drug that very little animal hospitals use due to its intense and negative side effects. Newton Hospital sent my baby home with no medication after a very invasive surgery and a four day stay in the ICU that cost 4 thousand dollars in total. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I was ignored after calling multiple times expressing my fear of negative side effects. It was not until my third phone call that they offered me prescriptions.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] (The prescriptions my cat should have gone home with in the first place) The medicine caused my cats face to swell and I was assured it was a normal side effect and would correct itself. My poor baby's face swelled so much that he couldn't eat without biting his own gums causing lesions and an infection. When I took him in I was met by a clueless vet who informed me that he was away during my cats stay in the ICU and didn't have any answers just that he could give him a benadryl injection. Something that he should have gotten before the swelling increased but I was assured numerous times that everything was okay. I left the Newton immediately and took him to Mt Olive Veterinary Hospital. The staff and doctors were in shock when they saw the state of my cat. They informed me the notes sent from Newton were very confusing and that they do not use ZORBIUM for many reasons. ***please if you take your cat to this practice do not let them use ZORBIUM on your pet***** The side effects are horrible, from face swelling, to defecating on themselves and laying in their own bowl movements, and extreme confusion. After my experience at Newton, I'm really shocked by the negative reviews. I took my cat in for a urinary block. From acceptance to check out every staff member I came in contact with was kind and patient. When they told me my cat needed to be admitted, we asked if we could say goodbye and they brought him back to me without hesitation. The doctors called me with updates and the staff who I spoke with when I called always encouraged me to call back at any time for updates, even when they seemed swamped one day that I called. When I picked up my cat, the vet tech explained all his meds, next steps, and encouraged me to reach back out with any questions. Was this an expensive trip? Well of course, it's an emergency hospital. But I never once felt like all they wanted was payment, I truly felt like they cared about my cat and I'm thankful that I brought him here as opposed to somewhere else. read more

My dog, Winston, was missing and lost in the woods for 8 days. After recovering him, he was covered head to toe with fleas. He was also very lethargic and tired from his journey. I was nervous to bring him to the vet, since we are usually living in NC, visiting family nearby. I brought him into this vet office, since it was the closest one that was open and they were extremely helpful. The second he was in there, there were two people looking at him and seeing his size and they were shocked he was missing for so long! Shortly after a wait and being checked in, we were brought back to an exam room and a vet was immediately with us. I was concerned because my Winston is very anxiety-filled and usually does not like being handled by anyone but me. The vet took him to the back to remove all the ticks and they did not even need sedation! I was shocked with their methods because they WORKED! Walked out of the exam room saying "fine whatever" and then SLAMMED the door. After exiting the room she said something about me to one of the other rare staff sitings in the back. Vet tech James was more helpful than the ACTUAL VET. He explained more what was going On. After spending a ton of money there we left with out a diagnosis. i hear everyone complain about this vet but it was the closest er to me and my NEUROLOGICAL dog needed to be seen...I should have made the drive to a vet farther away. I was in town visiting when my 9 year old dog hurt herself at 4 in the morning. I had no choice but to find an emergency care facility, I was hesitant after reading the reviews, but took my chances. The staff were caring and pleasant. They were so attentive and helpful to my pup. We were seen right away and it did not cost an arm and a leg like I thought it would (as most emergency vets do). My dog is very standoffish and to see her let the team tend to her without hesitation spoke volumes to me! Thank you for helping and taking such good care of my pup! read more

Have always felt respected and comforted my their care and advice. We boarded my senior Boston who has multiple severe medical issues here for 10 nights which included daily inhaler treatments and chemotherapy, and my dog came home happy and didn't experience any flare ups during her stay. read more

I did not have a good experience with Newton Animal Hospital. I found them to be understaffed, poorly administered, inefficient, and they even had technical difficulties with their phone system: their phones either constantly clicked (front desk) or dropped calls (veterinarian) so every communication had to be repeated. I never saw a veterinarian in person, and only got a one-minute phone call in the mornings and one-minute in the evenings with the on-duty veterinarian. I was constantly being put on hold so the technician could go ask the one very overworked veterinarian my questions about the proposed plan of treatment, prognosis, and follow-up after discharge. A five-minute conversation with the veterinarian could have covered everything. They could not even locate my dog (Raffi) for a full fifteen minutes at one point because they got his name wrong, and repeatedly got my address wrong (both street name and zipcode) despite my multiple corrections. Medically, I disagreed with a number of recommendations, such as $550-$827 antibiotic injections and a $264 urine culture despite no results in the blood work or urinalysis indicating infection. After the technician consulted with the veterinarian, these charges were immediately removed from the estimate. (Other less expensive oral and injectable antibiotics were also being given.) An abdominal ultrasound, which I expected would be done, was not even an option, because ultrasounds are only performed Monday through Friday but apparently 1 pm on Friday afternoon was too late, so his pancreatitis was not visually confirmed. I was also somewhat concerned that there was no awareness of my Shetland Sheepdog's MDR-1 status which could have been relevant when medications were prescribed. Further, one of the medications prescribed was a liquid but two of the four syringes they gave me for administering the liquid were too large to fit the opening of the bottle. A technician should have checked this. My assumption is that this hospital and sister hospitals (including Bergen Passaic, Berkeley Heights, Budd Lake, Kingston, and Upper East Side) is a corporate veterinary practice with pre-set treatment protocols by diagnosis without regard to the condition or laboratory values of the specific patient. Further, I conjecture that it is their administrative policy to conserve the valuable time of the veterinarian by utilizing technicians to interface with the public. They maintain only one veterinarian on-duty. Consequently, I believe, though no medical harm might be occurring, there is greater inefficiency and probably much frustration on the part of both the veterinarian and technicians, and discontent among pet-owners. I would like to reiterate that I had issues with the veterinary hospital policies and administration, not the individual veterinarians. My dog's daytime veterinarian was Dr Marco Ruffato, whom I would be very happy to use again if he were at a different facility. He seemed very conscientious and competent. The overnight veterinarian, Dr. Betsy Chabora, was not someone I would choose to use again, but she might well be better at a different place. If a pet requires overnight hospitalization with a veterinarian on-duty or overnight observation with a technician, the options are limited, but I would advise finding a facility other than this corporate chain of veterinary practices. read more

If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. The receptionists at the front all act like it is a bother that you are there at their facility. They are so rude and cold. The vet, Jen Wyman, hardly looked at my pup. He was suffering from allergies and an ear infection. She spent all of 20 seconds trying to look in his ear and when she couldn't, she said "it's probably an ear infection" and prescribed him medicine for it. She also called him "kid" at least 6 times in the two minute visit and that irked me. On the checkout, I was shocked to hear that the visit cost $180 and that they charged for an ear swap that never happened. I asked the receptionist and she said "I don't know but Dr Wyman is busy". I was irritated and left but DO NOT GO HERE! They are terrible! Fast forward three days and my pup's infection got worse. Brought him to his regular vet and they said he had so much gunk in his ears from the infection that the drops weren't going in. So $180 and two hours down the drain. Don't waste your time. Wyman needs to reevaluate her profession! read more

Dr. Bradick is fabulous. He did surgery on my 10-year-old bichon's knee. The entire facility is on the ball and very pleasant and helpful. They are open 24 seven and they are as wonderful at 2 AM as they are at 9 AM. read more

We went to Newton Vet Hospital last night, in an emergency. I have a 1yr old yellow lab who has absolutely no prior issues. He was acting lethargic, then vomited and shorty after vomiting his back legs started to get weak, he was having a hard time walking and getting around ultimately leading him to have to stay lying down. We are an hour from them, gave them a call prior to coming. We got there and they took my boy back very soon after to check his vitals, because his vitals were within normal limits he got to come in the room with us. About an hour or so later we finally got to speak with Dr. Chun who had advised us to get X-Rays done to check for a blockage so we did, she only came in for a short while, leaves before you can even think to ask about anything. We waited 2 hrs for the x-ray results all for her to tell us to come back tomorrow to get another $700 X-Ray! She couldn't even come into the room to discuss options she poked her head through the door. The nurse comes in and I ask him if he could have Dr. Chun come back so I can ask why no blood work was initially taken to check for Lyme disease, or any abnormalities in his blood. She said nothing about why he wouldn't be able to walk and why his hind legs were giving out. And he came back with her answer to one question, when I had plenty more. We gave up and left. We were there for 5 hours, got no answers and Dr. Chun basically assumed he would have a blockage.. probably because he's a lab! My MIL called today to complain and all they could do as apologize to her over and over again. I am not recommending this place for any emergency. read more

No Compassion. Intake personel are control freaks who will yell at you and put you down. Intake personel will start a fight with you and irritate you. Intake personel are simply horrible. Again, no compassion, no sense of urgency, no common sense at this place. Ignorance is rampant at this place. My experience was one of irritation, psychosis, and ultimate anger. I was told I showed up late for my appointment and denied service. I was five minutes late. I explained I was in the parking lot trying to park and their own employee can vouche for such. The intake woman yelled at me again I was late. I told her i was not after she told me I was three times. She walked away, came back, told me to wait half an hour for another doctor. I waited an hour and a half with my 17 year old dog. My dog cannot stand, my dog doesn't like to sit, my dog is very nice and stayed calm. Then an emergency patient came in with a dog frothing at the mouth, rabbies? I didn't know and they didn't care. They let the man stand in front of us with a dog lunging at us. I asked they take that emergency since we weren't an emergency, we were just a check up so I could get my old dog pain meds for her arthritis. They did not prioritize and help that patient immediately. After that, the lady behind the desk disrespected my dog and I by telling the vet tech we are ready by saying 'them' in a very nasty tone. I stood up, I looked at the desk lady, I told her I remember her name why can't she remember ours? We were sitting in front of her for an hour and a half. She stood up, she told me off by yelling I complain about her every time I'm there! I told her to F off. The vet tech took me into the back room (seriously, the room was an 8x 10 room, to small for us). When I was in the little back room one of the office ladies barged into the little room I was in and told me to leave. I told her to get out of my face, I pushed a door away from my head, and I tried to pick up my old dog and leave. In the waiting room Four personel came at me to leave. The idiot at the desk who harassed us called the state police on me and my dog. Another employee said to put down the phone and let me leave. She refused and called the police on us! History: I didn't know that lady had a problem. It turned out that our previous visit she messed up and refused to give me medication that was already filled for my dog. Her boss made her ask me for her apology. She actually said 'do you accept my apology.' I said 'sure', and then I left confused but thinking 'whatever.' It turns out this intake personel is on of a revolving door at this location. It turned out that that specific intake person has an issue with myself and my wife. We don't know her, or want to know her, but she sure has some serious control issues. Did I mention I have my PhD in Human Services and Counseling. Because that one person hates men I have to go to court and fight this entity. I'm 51 and have never been in trouble, never lost my temper, never ever. I ran a donation business to help children and the handicapped by gifting refurbished laptops, tablets, and other technology. My father and I ran the business. Microworx Ventures LLC or 3r Ventures. I am a very good person and good citizen. Keep that in mind when you try to be patient with this veternarian office if you choose to go. I took my dog to the emergency clinic and I had to wait over three hours and I ended up leaving and going to the Andover Hospital who assisted me right away this emergency clinic was rude and disrespectful when I was worried about the well-being of my dog. DO NOT GO HERE!!!!! read more
