Found a cat that has been living on the street for some while. I brought him to the emergency vet on Sunday and it cost me $700 and 5.5 hours but I'm happy I went. They highly suggested me making an appointment with a vet asap. He has significant scarring all over his body, a bloody nose like he ate something corrosive or according to the ER vet got electrocuted. Ulcerations on his tongue. He has some active wounds healing. He is barely 5lbs and the ER vet thinks 1-2 years old. They gave him flea bath, medicine, and he's been taking medicine with me. I've had him all of 36 hours living in my home. On my way home from the ER vet, I spent $400 more on cat supplies/necessities so I could bring the cat home. I want to get him into a vet for a proper baseline and his shots. So I call here. I do have an idea of what I need and a range of how much I know is charged for these things but i didn't think to ask during our initial call. So I explain the situation, they schedule my appointment. I called back later wondering how much it would cost to get him neutered at their office, I'm just planning ahead in my mind. They cannot tell me over the phone because they said they need to see us first? They don't have a starting point for neutering? So now I'm like hm I don't like this business practice, I bet they won't tell me how much a rabies shot is. So I ask. Well Jenn mentioned 2 rounds of distemperment then rabies, how much would that cost me? Oh, we can't tell you over the phone. They will give you a quote after you come in and see you. I said so, I have no idea how much I'll be spending tomorrow? I understand the many different variables that can affect pricing. But they should know how much a rabies shot is and should be able to tell me. I'm trying to do a good thing here for this cat and just want to be prepared. I said, If I can't have an idea of pricing, I'll have to cancel. She said, that's fine with a gleeful tone, I'll cancel your appointment tomorrow bye. The ER vets really cared about the situation and I felt that in my heart. I did not feel overlooked or dismissed like I did with this office. You should have seen what was happening there, they had someone come in with a dead dog in their arms. They still made time to take me and quote me first. After some experiences with my cockapoo and a $7,000 later with "miscellaneous charges" I see absolutely nothing wrong with asking. My impression here is very poor. Alyssa and Jenn were unhelpful and couldn't offer me anything more than scheduling. Every single time with any business I've dealt with, if they've refused to give me the starting point for a BASIC and EXPECTED service that they offer - run. We own our own business too and I give pricing over the phone all the time lol. If we need to charge more, there's an articulable reason. This business model easily becomes a trap, especially when there's a high level of emotional investment like with pets. Why do they need to see the cat before quoting me for neutering, do they measure the cats....? Do they want to see what kind of car I pull in with and what purse is on my arm? Perhaps they'll profile how I dress? They were the FIRST office that refused pricing over the phone and had a standoffish attitude when I was telling them about the stray cat situation. They didn't care. They wanted me to schedule or get off the phone. The cat mentioned is attached. I HIGHLY suggest looking at their yelp reviews too. There is a strong pattern with their low star reviews and I felt it by their demeanor over the phone. Update: I found a reputable vet in Wayne nj that gave me a package for the cat - neutering, microchipping, fvrcp shot, nail clipping, pain medication, flea bath, and ear cleaning for $180. They took me in 2 days after my call to them. Stay far away from practices like this one in Vernon, that don't demonstrate transparency. I live 5 minutes away and will gladly drive to Wayne. I'd pay $1,000 if I had to and that was going rate, but I'd like to have an idea first. read more

Don't believe the bad reviews. I brought our 10 year boxer in here after some of stitches from a surgery previously in week from our regular vet opened up during the night and this was the only place near by opened on a Sunday. Even without an appointment they were able to see me in between two people that did. 1/2 hour later a few stitches and a bill that was very reasonable considering It was an unprompted Sunday visit. The front desk staff were nothing but helpful so unsure of where the bad reviews come from. They even rang the follow day to check on everything. read more

dr scott doesn't return phone calls as a person i would feel comfortable with call the office after he killed our dog trying to caĺ him back with a hypothesis on why he was killed he couldn't be bothered to call back. he also couldn't call back when he was alive. as caring as he sounds it's bs and a job to him....return a phone call.... to all the women out there from 12 to 99 keep tour feminine hygiene products away from your dogs. don't know if this was the main problem or part of the problem but now we will never know because our dog is dead a little lesson when a dog eats a feminine hygiene product its gastric let's say juices will accumulate in the product and also dry out the bottom of its esophagus causing the animal to try and eject what's there. But with hydration it may be over comed. But left untreated it will lead to the animals demise. Not a doctor but went thru it with a beloved animals demise. Doctor this goes for you and your fellow colleagues wether the woman is menstruating or lives past that age, urinary incontinence could effect woman till they past (100+) ask? Looking back I firmly believe that's why Damion was put to sleep , why he love eating those appliances I do not know my wife got careless with them and we would find them eaten. Do a search there are many more reasons than answers for this behavior. If you need to go to this vet for an emergency don't waste your time. Even if it is during office hrs. As they will turn you away. I had an emergency this morning involving my 13 day old puppies. We're I lost one. When I called and said I would be there when the dr gets in (15 min from time of call) the receptionist was extremely rude, she said they can not help me, they were double booked and to take my puppies to the emergency hospital ( 25 min away ) even though my dogs are patient's. So because of this I ended up losing another one on the way to the emergency Hosp. I used to love coming here, so much so i would drive over 1 hour to get there. Over time, staff has changed and they wont even forward my records to another vet. I waited in the parking lot for an hour an a half for my appointment as others showed up, walked in saw the vet, left and i was still sitting there. I really cannot say enough good things about Vernon Vet. About 10 years ago, my beloved cat "threw a clot" and was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy. I arrived at Vernon vet in a complete panic, and Dr Potter , along with Dr Scott Gaydos saved his life. Although cardiomyopathy is incurable, they provided us ( through expertise and proper care instruction)with 14 more months with our cat. I now have a dog recently diagnosed with kidney disease. The staff here is so supportive, caring and professional that neither I or my dog dread going in. I will go to the ends of the earth for my pets and for me, this is the best place to go. The receptionists are friendly, knowledgeable and on point. The techs are gentle, caring and sweet. The doctors are true professionals, are honest and comforting. I have been going to Vernon Vet since we moved here almost 11 years ago. I came from Bergen County where my regular vet was based out of Oradell, so I have high standards. First I dealt with Dr. Potter, who I affectionately called Dr. Country Bob, but have been using Dr. Scott exclusively since he came on board. Even though I jokingly call him The Kid, he is intelligent and caring. He treats all of our cats like they were his own. He takes joy in new faces but also grieves when a pet passes. This man is truly in the right field. In terms of quality of care, this place is very good. They do no inundate you with costly tests if they do not feel it is necessary, unlike my old vet. They keep costs low (a shock from someone used to Bergen County pricing). I only had issue with one vet there but he is long gone. I'll put it to you this way: Scott found a cure for my cat's "pillow paws." Even Oradell didn't know what that was or how to treat it. Dr. Potter first diagnosed it but Scott found the treatment. Scott cared enough about my cat that he took his own time to do research on this and found a treatment that worked! I seriously gave up hope that Stig would ever be cured of this and would have painful paws for the rest of his life. Now, Stig is much more mobile and active, which is a blessing. As a lifelong pet owner, I have been to many vets with my kitties. Scott and his crew are top notch and have my loyalty. I know my kitties are in good hands here. read more

Absolute worst place to take your pet for surgery. The staff has no idea how to deal with animals in critical condition. My Kitten died from what should of been a routine spay procedure! After surgery they sent my kitten home incoherent. No vet I have spoken to since would ever let a kitten leave the office in that condition. Then at home my kitten started having seizures. When I raced her back to the office. They did tests and then said there was nothing more they could do for her. They then sent me off 45 minutes away to an animal hospital. In that time My kitten passed away. In my opinion if a Vet does surgery on your pet in their office they should be totally responsible for the post surgical care. Not another office or hospital! If you love your pets and you want the very best care this is not the place. I also feel that a good office is trained for all breeds of cats and dogs. So if your animal is purebred make sure they know the breed before doing surgery on them. That was my mistake to not ask. Then again I didn't think I needed too. :( My kitten was healthy until this office worked on her. My heart is broken and I will never ever take my pets back here ever again. I could not be more satisfied with Vernon Veterinary Hospital. They've taken care of my dog and cats for 7 years now- I've been pleased with all of the vets, but for the last 4 years we have used Dr. Scott Gaydos and really love him! He's helped my pets thru a couple surgeries in addition to regular care. I find him to be warm, friendly, and knowledgeable...Dr. Scott will get down on the floor with my dog to give him vaccinations because he stresses out on the table. He also lets me know when certain vaccinations are uneccessary for my senior corgi mix, and what vitamins and supplements would be helpful. My cat was just hospitalized there with a urinary obstruction, and Dr. Scott along with the staff were so good to him, and to me...calling me every step along the way and addressing any of my worries. Not to mention the cost was more than fair, considering all they did for him. The girls at the front desk are great, the techs are wonderful, I couldn't ask for better care for my best friends :) read more

I was attracted to this Vet office because they had reasonable pricing. If you are trying to avoid high prices and being taken advantage of, this place is for you. However, there are problems. One vet I used there was new and saw my sick cat. She gave it IV fluids and sent me home. He died three days later. She talked about cows when I asked her about cats!! Clearly inexperienced and dangerous. Had an appointment for ONE shot for my dog. Waited about 40 minutes and was told the two vets on staff were busy with an emergency and could not see my dog for what could be an hour or more. I left (because I could not wait). The receptionist was nasty with me when I called for a new appointment. She told me she had a note that said, "I walked out"! So i called a couple of weeks later when my dog was dying and could not stand up. I asked the receptionist how I would deal with bringing in a 100 pound dog who could not stand up. She simply said in a nasty tone, "I don't know"! (I thought she might invite me to use the back door they give emergency animals or volunteer someone to help me when I got there). Worst group of veterinarians ever. The gals at the counter are inept and rude. Took my Labrador retriever here repeatedly for ear infections. Was told dog probably had an allergy. No other info was given to me. No thoughts regarding what kind of allergy so we could manage it, nothing. We were given meds that didn't work. The infection returned over and over. When I asked if there was another medication to try I was told No. My dog died at home from a stroke and STILL had the ear infections. These people are monsters. They have no compassion and it's almost like they have no education or experience.Took my new Lab to Hamburg Veterinary Clinic. She had an ear infection last summer. Guess what? I got my dog spayed here, a simple surgery in which they preform all the time. Needless to say, almost lost my dog due to the vet who performed the surgery. She lost 12lbs in a matter of 3 days. Would not eat, pee and hardly move. They told us this was "normal" and just prescribed us meds. I felt something wasn't right so took for a second opinion elsewhere. In which she needed a lot more than just meds prescribed to her. The vet who gave us the second opinion said had we not taken her in when we did, she most likely would not have made it. I contacted this vet to let them know what was going on and was told Dr. Scott (who did the surgery) was not in for the day and would return my call two days later when he came back. I had been bringing my dog to The Vernon Vet. for a number of years and as such, trusted their opinion in caring for my dog. I became concerned as he had been wheezing recently. The vet. took an x-ray and told me he had heart disease and an enlarged heart. I was devastated as the doctor proceeded to inform me that he would need to be put on Lasix and that it would need to be increased in time to keep him "comfortable". I followed the instructions however, when I read online that his blood levels would need to be monitored and viewing that he was still having difficulties breathing after a month of treatment, I called to make an appointment. The office informed me that they were booked up and though I had been bringing my dog to them for a number of years; I brought him somewhere else. I am extremely relieved that they were too busy to see him! The local vet. recommended we take him to a specialist as he did NOT see the problem that Vernon diagnosed him with and ALSO immediately removed the Lasix as he said it was an inappropriate treatment plan and not recommended. I was extremely nervous when I brought him to the specialist immediately per the new vet's instructions but could not have asked for better news as she announced within 30 minutes of his visit that HIS HEART IS NORMAL!!! She suggested that my dog has asthma and began a COMPLETLY different course of action which has allievated his symptoms almost entirely. I was CRUSHED by the completely inaccurate diagnosis made by the Vernon vet. and would suggest that others follow up with a 2nd opinion elsewhere before ever recommending this vet. to anyone. My dog is now much better off and NOT on a medication that would NEVER have beniffed him. The Vernon Veterinarian informed me that my dog had a progressive and inevitably fatal disease of the heart based upon an inaccurate reading of his x-ray. Seek another opinion! read more
