We were close by and decided to grab dinner here. The place was busy and loud. Ok holidays and two large parties made it extra loud so I was happy they let us sit in a table away from everyone else. We have our one year old and all the noise is a lot. Hubby ordered the lamb and I ordered the salmon. We loved both meals. The rice was the perfect side for both meals and my husband kept trying to take my rice. We also had a side of hummus which was delicious. My baby boy loves the pita bread. This has become our go to Mediterranean restaurant in SD! It's that good. Decided to try Ney since we were in the area for something else. It was a week day night so there wasn't a ton of people inside. They also super blasted the AC even though it wasn't hot outside so FYI bring a jacket lol. We got the spicy babaganoush and it's sooooo good! I love the extra spice and pepper flavor in the babagamoush. The pita bread that came with it was also super good. We were really hungry and had to control ourselves to not finish the appetizer immediately. I got the chicken tikka and it came with the brown rice which is just spiced rice. Honestly I didn't realize it came with raisins because I'm not a fan of raisins in my rice. But after picking them out I did enjoy the rice. The chicken was really nice and juicy and I loved the garlic sauce that came with it. My bf got the beef tashreeb though I think they accidentally gave us lamb instead. Ney offers impressively large and tasty appetizers. However the entrees were a bit lacking in comparison. Like its neighboring establishment, they also have a 3.5% surcharge for credit cards--so bring cash. They were empty during happy hour and I appreciated that the discounts were still applied when I showed up 10 minutes prior. Food came out quick and hot. =ORDERED= *Hummus: big shareable. Creamy, earthy and garlicky. The best part was the accompanying pita bread. Super hot with a slight char. *Fattoush: similarly big and could be shared between a family. The lettuce, tomatoes, radish, onions and peppers were fresh. The vinaigrette was sweet and acidic. The fried pita strips added a crunch. Great portion for $13. *Beef Shawarma Wrap: despite being $10 cheaper than the entree version, it tasted better. The juicy beef was smothered in a herb tahini sauce and wrapped in phyllo dough. The dish came with perfectly fluffy fries. This would be a great lunch option and honestly could have been split into two meals. *Beef Shawarma Entree: came with either rice or fries which I opted for the latter. However I would have wanted a side of sauce as the beef was dry on its own. There was minimal flavor and it felt incohesive eating a pile of beef with plain fries. Nothing was special about the entree and I would stick to the sandwiches. *Vanilla Gelato: some of the most concentrated vanilla flavor I've ever had. There were some ice chunks in each scoop but the flavor was unbeatable. *Tartufo: hazelnut and vanilla ice cream encased in chocolate. The chocolate exterior was rich but I preferred the flavor of plain vanilla. I'll definitely be back for the happy hour, especially given appetizers are $4 off across the board. The restaurant is well appointed with beautiful decor. The service is great and very friendly. Food wise we liked it but didn't quite love it but definitely worth a try. All the food is presented beautifully but the flavor profile is a bit different than other restaurants if you're looking for Mediterranean style food. I wish I had the words to describe it. This place has been on my list since noticing while I was eating next door to the oyster pearl restaurant . The sumac martini was good and they had a happy hour which shaved a tiny bit off the regular price from 1-9pm . The salad was huge enough for a few people to share . We both liked our dishes and the rice . I was able to have leftovers for lunch the next day . They brought a side of tahini and taziki. Came here after finals with my classmates back in March and the waitress remembered me from my first time here back in the fall loool *insert heart here* she's honestly such a sweetheart so it was an honor to be remembered by her. She kept checking on us & making sure everything was going smoothly and brought us everything we needed We came on a Friday afternoon for lunch and they were able to accommodate a group of 8 for a walk-in which was awesome! The fattoush here uses fresh ingredients and you can taste it! This time around it wasn't as lemony as the first time I came which I was ok with because the first time was a tad too lemony for my liking. Flavor packed dishes contingent on whether you dine in or eat as take out. We ordered take out after my brother in law raved about their food as a dine in patron . I realize that something is lost with take out but certain dishes should travel well such as the falafel which was sadly very dry and missing the sauce that is served when you dine in. The lamb was still fall of the bone but missing the stew and significantly smaller as takeout. The Greek salad was both beautiful and DELICIOUS! And the baba ganoush was the best I have ever had. The biriyani and saffron rice was made with spices that delighted my taste buds! Though the okra and the white bean soup had all the flavor elements it was missing salt. Superb! Ney has been on my list for a few months and I have to say that my husband and I were very pleased to find such a great restaurant serving one of our favorite cuisines close to where we live. We went on a Sunday around 12:30pm and there were two large parties and 4 tables seated when we arrived which was a good sign to us. We ordered the hummus with pita and falafel to start. The hummus was silky smooth and delicious. The falafel was crisp on the outside and so moist inside served with a curry tomato dipping sauce that my husband couldn't get enough of. I'm not quite sure what it was since the menu said tahini and it definitely was not tahini. The waiter encouraged us to get a half order of their feast to try a little bit of everything but we opted to order the beef shawarma entree and just share it. It came with picked vegetables, tons of thinly shaved beef, rice, flatbread and the garlic sauce. The beef was tender and decadent, the pickled radishes were a treat, the Ney rice with almonds, raisins and saffron was to die for and I could've eaten an entire bowl of it. The garlic sauce was my least favorite. The plates are gorgeously presented, portion sizes are massive and food delicious and the service is just as good. The restaurant was spotless, tables spaced apart enough to have privacy and there was plenty of parking when we arrived though difficult to maneuver out of when we left. Ney is worth checking out with a group, by yourself or with someone who wants a solid meal. You'll be taking leftovers home no matter what you order. read more

We have been to Ney a few times, most recently this July. Lamb Quzi is one of our favorites, but this time the meat was dry and overall not as good as past times. That said, the restaurant is very attractive and the staff very friendly and accommodating, and we will continue to eat there. The flatbread and other menus items are delicious. read more

I live near Glendale, CA, a suburb of Los Angeles which is populated by many amazing Persian, Lebanese and other middle eastern dining venues. Ney is better than any of the of them, by far. The food is amazing, the service is great and the prices are very reasonable. I'm a vegan and Ney has a wide variety if vegan options, all of them very good. I dined at Ney with three friends that live in the area and they were also very impressed by the food and experience. Give Ney a try, you won't be disappointed. read more

We love Mediterranean food and tried Ney two years ago--great food and experience back then. But last night, just the two of us, was a total disappointment. We showed up around 7:30pm and were told to sit anywhere since it wasn't busy. Then we waited 15 minutes before anyone came by. Drinks and apps arrived fast, but after that, we were ignored. By 8:15pm, while still eating, they started mopping floors and clearing tables. Our waiter walked right past us holding a mop--didn't even make eye contact or ask if we needed anything. We had to tell him we wanted to order entrees, which he took right then and there while still holding the mop. After that, he disappeared, ignoring us completely while chatting with people at the bar. We wanted dessert, but when we caught his eye, he just signaled if we wanted the check. So we left. Asked for to-go boxes, got one when we clearly needed two. The strong smell of cleaning products didn't help. Food's still good, but service was careless and disrespectful. Treat customers like this? I wasn't expecting to have such a quality meal experience on a random Tuesday night in La Mesa. First, the restaurant is spotless. Nicely spaced tables and everything looks like the restaurant had just opened for business. Our server, Sara, was not only super patient and incredibly knowledgeable about the menu (me and my date had a LOT of questions), but was efficient and made absolutely superb recommendations. I had the Sumac Martini, on her recommendation. I generally don't like sweet cocktails, which this was, but it was a flavor bomb - notes of pomegranate, sumac, lime, and a background of booze tying it up into a deliciously round, perfect cocktail that somehow went with everything I ate. For appetizers we had a sampler plate with tzatziki (cooling and smooth, and with crunchy bits of cucumber), the best baba ghanoush I've had in SD with the eggplant balanced with a light smoke and citrus, a spicy baba ghanoush which I felt had holes in its flavor profile but was not offensive, and an amazingly smooth and flavorful hummus that was also the best I've had in SD. We also had (and I'm sounding like a broken record) but the most moist and flavorful falafel that had a hint of curry flavor that was superior to any other I've had in the city that went perfectly with a garlic and olive oil sauce. Finally to finish our starter tour de force we had a juicy and richly flavored chicken tikka skewer. Finally our main. Lamb Quzi which was a braised shank on top of biriyani rice. The rice was a symphony of textures and flavors from slivered almonds, basmati(?), to white raisins in a a blend of spices that made my tongue and jaw dance. It also came with a white bean stew that was a tad bland, but perhaps needed to be so to serve as a break from the other bites in the meal. I ate past the point of comfort as I didn't want the night to end. Prices are crazy reasonable, especially on Tuesday night happy hour. I plan on putting this restaurant into my regular rotation - it now occupies the Mediterranean/middle eastern food itch scratcher spot of my dance card. read more

They also have some nice music on in the background. The service was also friendly and informative. They have an extensive menu with plenty of food and drinks to choose from. This is such a gorgeous restaurant! I placed a takeout order on a weekday and the food was ready quickly, in about 20 mins. The ladies who helped me over the phone and in person were quick and helpful. I stopped inside for a few minutes while they packed my order, and I saw that they have a really large family style table, and lots of typical sized tables. They also have a full bar on site. My partner and I ordered a lamb tashreeb and a chicken plate. The lamb was really nice, slow cooked and tender. The chicken tikka and rice on my dish, however, were quite dry. I lived in San Diego not that long ago, and I was back in town for a wedding this past weekend. Some of the friends I met there have planted roots and bought houses -- including in La Mesa. When I visit, I try to see as many of them as possible. My friends in La Mesa and I made plans to have dinner at their home, and when it came time to choose a place for takeout, I did a little research and came across Ney Restaurant just a couple miles away. The terrific reviews sold us, so my friends placed the order and I picked it up on my way over. When I arrived, my friends commented that the portions were so large, it looked like a catering order -- which explained the prices being a little higher than they expected. We chose the combo appetizer platter with Baba Ghanoush, Middle Eastern Salad, Tabbouleh, and Hummus. We also shared three entrees: Dulaimiya, Beef Shawarma, and Chicken Schnitzel. I'm a big fan of Middle Eastern cuisine, but I don't recall ever eating Iraqi food before this meal. The meat, rice, bread, and vegetables were all delicious. All of us were quite pleased with everything we tasted. The only criticism I have for Ney Restaurant is the upcharge for paying with a credit card. I've certainly seen that for small charges (typically under $5 or $10) at small shops, but our order was around $100. I can understand preferring cash, and I can even get on board with the 4% credit card fee IF it is advertised on the menu. read more

We went to Ney for the first time last night and loved it! The decor is modern, clean and comfortable; the service was friendly and welcoming and the food was fantastic. Fresh ingredients, and so well prepared. The spicy babaganoush (a real winner!) was accompanied by some of the most heavenly pita bread I've had in a long time; the entrees were fabulous. My husband had lamb shanks that fell off the bone, accompanied by delicious stewed okra and a pilaf rice and grilled veg and pickles. My beef shawrma plate was the best I've ever had. Very nice wine and beer list, too, and easy parking. We don't live in La Mesa, but it was worth the drive to get there, that's for sure! read more

This is a gem of a special restaurant in La Mesa. First of all, the place is adorable. When you walk in, it's decorated up for the holidays, as well as having a separate sitting area with beautiful wooden furniture. It has ambience, with soft lighting, greenery, and contemporary decor. It's warm and welcoming. People always greet us with a smile when we walk in like they're happy to see us. That's always such a nice touch to feel welcome in a restaurant. Originally we came here looking for vegan food, and it ticked all of the boxes. The hummus is the most delicious and creamy dish. It's mouthwatering! The tabbouleh is fresh and bright, and the tasty dolmas are served with lemon slices. The falafel are cooked to perfection, and come out hot and fresh. On previous visits, we had the baryani which is made vegan and is a super savory and downright crave-able rice dish. Our son had the chicken tikka wrap for meat eaters, and he said it was fantastical and delicious. Every time we come here our server is always so kind. This time Zoe was our server, and was super attentive! She gave us extra sides of everything, including lots of garlic spread, which honestly is like magical stuff that legends are made of. I'm outright going to say that this is the best Middle Eastern restaurant in San Diego, and it's in a very unassuming strip mall not too far from some other very good places. My family and I have never had a bad meal here and every time we come, we get something with great flavor and big portions for a solid price. Their hummus and baba are quite good, their salads are fresh and delicious, their wraps are delicious but its their meats and their insane biriyani rice that steal the show. Their lamb dishes are divine and taste amazing, probably among my favorites, and their chicken is moist and delicious. If you come with a large enough group or if you're hungry you can't beat the Al Muhibs for quantity and quality - leftovers for a few days is never bad in my book. I would only note I've never been a big fan of their beef shwarma, although their chicken version is really good. As a side note, their wine list is also surprisingly good and its rare to go to any restaurant and find good Israeli wines. Their reds in my opinion rank among the best in small restaurants. I first saw the food on Instagram and immediately was like I HAVE to try this place!! The food and the service did not disappoint at all. We came in around 6 PM on Tuesday, and it wasn't too busy besides a large party and a few other tables. Our waitress was the sweetest person ever and really made our first visit an amazing experience. I saw pictures on yelp of this stew looking dish but I couldn't figure out what it was. After showing our waitress the picture, she told us it was it was an item that they no longer have on the menu, but they could still make it for me if I wanted it. I loved that they were able to do that for me, so of course I had to order it after seeing how good it looked. My bf ordered the beef shawarma wrap and it was so tender and juicy. The food was full of flavor and just amazing overall. The lamb was falling off the bone, and I especially loved the okra pieces in the dish. The star of the show was definitely the lamb dulaimiya, and I hope they add it back on the menu because that would probably be my go to order the next time we visit. Great family restaurant with amazing service to boot. This is in a small strip mall in La Mesa, and I wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleased to see what I saw. They had a wide variety of items on the menu. Something for everyone. The lentil soup was delicious as well as my greek style salad. A point of contention is that I called earlier in the day to find out what on the menu was gluten-free and specifically asked about the lamb kebabs and was told they were. Only to get there and find out that they weren't. I also advised the wait staff that I had a gluten allergy and that my soup came out with noodles. I had to send that back. Food allergies are my issues. This shouldn't dissuade you from trying this amazing family restaurant. read more
