I walked by one afternoon and had a very late lunch of steak tartare and wine. It was ridiculously cheap, and while they can't use premium ingredients at this price point, it is really impressive the flavour and quality that they achieve within it. Kudos! Apparently the talented chef "Bob" will be moving to their sister location Fallen Feather on Ossington after this location shuts down in a week. We visited on a Monday night, and there was no wait. The restaurant is a cozy, intimate space that seats about 30 people. Our server greeted us promptly, and we decided to go with the prix fixe menu as the choices and prices were quite appealing. For appetizers, we ordered the duck prosciutto and scallop ceviche. The scallops were fresh, and the tiger's milk paired nicely with the onions and radish, adding a refreshing touch. The prosciutto was also tasty, though the pickled mushrooms got a bit lost in the dish. The appetizers met our expectations, but nothing really stood out. For our mains, we chose the chicken thigh steak and caramelized French onion pasta. The chicken was cooked well--juicy on the inside with a crispy skin on the outside. The risotto was al dente, though I think it could have been cooked slightly longer for a softer bite. The caramelized French onion pasta was a bit of a miss for me; I was expecting more flavors resembling traditional French onion. Instead, it tasted more like a sweet onion pasta. That said, it still had a good flavor overall and just the right amount of sauce. The bread served on the side could use some improvement--it was hard and bland, with only a few areas having olive oil, while most parts were dry. I also wish the portion sizes for both mains were a bit larger, as I still felt a bit hungry afterward. For dessert, we opted for the pineapple brûlée and toffee pudding. The toffee pudding had a nice flavor, but it had been soaked in syrup for too long, making it overly sweet and giving it a very soft, almost mushy texture. The pineapple brûlée was a bit underwhelming--it was essentially a thick slice of pineapple with brûléed sugar on top, sitting in pineapple juice with cinnamon whipped cream and lime zest. We heard that this restaurant was going to close on May 17, which is soon. And media was saying their food was good and tasting menu was great! So we decided to go and have a try before they close. Everyone there with reservation. We were table for 3. There was a bit traffic when we drove to downtown. So we were actually late for half an hour, but we called ahead to let the waiter know. The first App was Salmon Tartare, it's raw salmon salad. I can't have any raw food, so I let my husband to have it. The 2nd App was Pan Seared Shrimp, it's cooked shrimp but not too much cooked. My kid loved it and she ate 2 and I ate 1 for the taste. The 3rd one was the main, they ran out of the Duck Confit, so they switched to the Duck Breast without extra charge. It was medium cooked, which it was still having blood, we couldn't stand for it. They took it back and well cooked and also cut into pieces. That's so nice of them. It actually really tasty and it was not hard to bite. I did like the well done duck meat. We also got the Bolognese pasta, he said it was Lasagna, but it wasn't, it was only spaghetti, but my kid liked the sauce. The last one was the White Chocolate Panna Cotta, which it was milk pudding with a little bit white chocolate at the bottom with strawberry and its jam, and walnuts on the side. We told the waiter my kid has nuts allergy, but walnut was still on the dessert plate. We gave her another side of the pudding where didn't have any nuts. Kids like sweets. I'm not vegan but due to my restrictions it was easier for me to ask for vegan or no cheese (bless the server for checking if I could eat beef) The complementary potato soup is vegan and it was lovely and creamy without the cream. The beef tartar was a bit sour for my taste but it was nicely seasoned. I'm sure it would've been great with the saltiness from the Parmesan. My partner for the Korean fried chicken with truffle sauce and spicy sauce (this was reaaaally good), and my friend ordered the shrimp... Nicely balanced flavours. Of all the apps I'd recommend the Korean fried chicken and the shrimp. For the mains I got the vegetarian (turned vegan just for me) sunchoke pasta. I loved my plate the most but I also tried the duck and that was a very strong contender too. I sampled some of my friend's salmon and the fish was perfectly cooked with the skin remaining crispy and the meat still moist. I didnt try the other two since it had a lot of cheese. But my wife wolfed down her pasta. According to her, Creamy and full of the chargrilled shrimp flavour that she loves. To finish I got the pineapple and lemon sorbet (which coincidentally Does happen to be vegan, they just didn't mark it with a V on the menu). My wife's white chocolate mousse was very sweet (maybe too sweet for her palette but my other friend loved it) and my other friends dessert was the sticky toffee pudding ... no chocolate flavour, but very sweet from the dates. We came for the prix fixe lunch (a great deal at $25) on a weekday and we loved our experience. The food and service are amazing, yet the prices are surprisingly low, which makes me want to support them even more. The prix fixe lunch is now $25 (it used to be $28, I think), which feels almost too affordable for the quality you get. I recently dined here for a friend's bday. To be frank, the highly rated reviews and pricing did not correlate with food quality for me. They have a $38 prixe fixe menu and I tried the following: - Appetizer: Ngogo Caesar Salad - Lettuce, Bacon Bits, Miso & Parmesan dressing, Croutons, Cured egg yolks, Sesame powder. This was good but it comes as a half head of lettuce. One of my friend's ordered this but said it was a bit too much work for her as you need to cut it yourself. - Main: Salmon Steak with Clam Chowder, Onion, Carrot, Celery Fish Broth, Baguette, Puffed Quinoa. The salmon seemed a bit undercooked though the skin was crispy. - Dessert: Pineapple Brulee with Lime & Pineapple sauce, Lemon Sorbet. This was the most disappointing, I thought it would be a brulee with pineapple but it's literally just a slice of pineapple with caramelized sugar and small scoop of sorbet. Probably should have asked them to explain what it was since there was no further description. Other friends in the party ordered the following: Duck Confit, Creamy Gochujang Pasta, Bouillabaisse Mussel & Burnt Toast, Eaton Mess. I think these were better options but even the Duck Confit that seems popular, my friend said was a bit too salty. Next we had the duck confit and duck breast entrees. Both dishes were also cooked perfectly, well seasoned, and had crispy skin. The cream cabbage and barley was also a nice side to the dishes. The only thing I'd suggest is to add some green to elevate the plating. For dessert, we had the Eaton mess and the toffee pudding. Eaton mess was good and has a similar taste profile as a strawberry shortcake. Fresh and fruity. The toffee pudding was also pretty good. We had a fantastic meetup experience at this newish spot in Queen West on a Monday! I noticed the sidewalk sign with the weekday specials advertised including buck-a-shuck Mondays, so we had to go. An affordable option for a downtown Toronto meal but I wasn't blown away. They offer a prix fixe menu for $38, as well as an a la carte selection. We did the prix fixe, but I actually think we could have saved some money ordering individual items as we aren't big dessert people and could have done without the third course. There were some hits and misses, I think I would have enjoyed May's menu better (it changes monthly). For starters, we tried the salmon crudo and karaage. I loved the crudo - super fresh taste, and good portion. The karaage was a decent portion (4 pieces, sharable) but it was a bit salty. I think this was because of the sweet soy sauce that it appeared to be fried in. I would do the crudo again, but maybe opt for the scallops instead of the karaage. For the mains, the smashed burger was great. The french fries were heavenly - I wish there were a few more. The mackerel was okay, very fishy as all mackerel is, but nothing too special. I did enjoy the kimchi and tomato chutney which paired well with the fish. For dessert, as mentioned I am not a sweets person, so it was okay. Apart from the food, the service is fantastic. I had to wait a while for my dinner date to arrive and I did not feel pressured or rushed to order at all. They came by to check on me every once in a while, but not too often. My friends really enjoyed their plates which included the the prosciutto, marinated scallops, duck confit, and gojuchang pasta. I would say out of 6 dishes there are usually 4/5 really good dishes. They change their menu and are currently celebrating their anniversary so dinner comes with a melon gazpacho. The food was mediocre. I got the shrimp to start which is decent. The burger was not bad but did not taste of bulgogi as they had described. The strawberry dessert was just fine. Of the menu, nothing displays the french fusion that they claimed. They had served complimentary onion soup in a ramekin along with a tea spoon--an experience I would prefer to not have. The flavor was bland and I think we all deserve proper soup spoons. The cocktail menu might as well have not existed as most items were just classic/standard drinks that any bartender at an establishment charging these prices should be able to produce. Once I sat down, they had walked off to set another table and did not return with menus or asked if we would like water to start. Had the 50% off steak Tuesdays. The steaks were subpar - worse than subpar, they were steaks that I could have cooked at home. Ordered medium, came out medium rare and cold. The steaks had a glossy texture indicative of previously frozen temperature and was not defrosted properly, and that's besides the fact that I shouldn't be able to see the texture of the raw beef for a medium steak. Nonetheless - the steaks were under-seasoned, soggy, and didn't have a crusty exterior that a steak that is being cooked with a cast iron pan should. Presentation was horrible - a dollop of garlic aioli just dropped on the side of the plate, some cut up steak, some fries, random smattering of jalapeños, a small saucer of ketchup. It was just melting in my mouth and the peas just complimenting it so beautifully. I thought the portions were not going to satisfy my friend and I but the server said to trust the process. He was right! The place was clean and the server was a delight. Very patient and understood his audience. To top it all off, they played my favourite artist's music just as I was about to request. Ngogo is a NO GO! We had the prix fixe menu. We both had the Scallops, tiny scallops, most likely frozen, extremely under seasoned and bland. Main, I had the pasta and wow, can't believe I was served this at a restaurant. Tasted like unseasoned No Name brand spaghetti, over cooked lean ground beef and sour crème... it's just wrong in every way. My partner had the Mackrel, that was even worse. It was slimy skin, mushy underseasons, and the chutney tasted like so gross jam thing. Oh and a salad that was your typical spring mix out of a box with a cheap vinaigrett. The only thing you are getting served is a big old Catfish as this is nothing like what is advertised on social media. Needless to say we left after this. No review on the dessert. read more
